Gerard Wedderburn-Bisshop is a former Principal Scientist with the Queensland Government Natural Resources, where he spent three decades using satellite data to monitor vegetation cover and deforestation. Since leaving that position, he has co-authored the Beyond Zero Emissions' Land Use Plan, worked with the NGO World Preservation Foundation, and serves as Director of Replant Byron. We had the privilege of closing out our last season with a chat with this incredible human, and we're thrilled to welcome Gerard back for an update on his latest groundbreaking research! In this episode, we explore Gerard's latest paper, Increased Transparency in Accounting Conventions Could Benefit Climate Policy. He breaks down three major shifts in climate science and emissions accounting that challenge conventional thinking about what drives climate change—revealing that agriculture, particularly animal agriculture, is the leading cause of present-day warming. This is a paradigm-shifting conversation, so grab your pen and notepaper (you'll want to take notes, trust us!), and check out Gerard's brief explainer video here.In this episode, we discuss:A recap of Gerard's previous research on the need for consistent carbon accountingContentious gases and how we measure them – Global Warming Potential vs Effective Radiative ForcingThe impact of cooling aerosols from fossil fuel emissions and why they complicate climate calculations. How we have undervalued the impact of deforestation, underestimated methane's impact, and failed to account for cooling emissions.A game-changing revelation: updated metrics show agriculture is responsible for 60% of today's global warming—with animal agriculture alone accounting for 53%.The overlooked power of natural drawdown—how nature has looked after us right from the startWhy these improved methodologies haven't been widely applied before, and what's been standing in the wayThe expected response from the animal agriculture industry and how to navigate the greenwashing. The bigger picture: what role does animal agriculture play in humanity's future?Join us as we unpack the science, the solutions, and why a major shift in climate policy is needed—now more than ever!To view all the links to the websites and documents, visit the show notes on our website. Please support our work and enable us to deliver more content by buying us a coffee or becoming a member of Athletes for Nature.Follow us on Instagram, Facebook and Bluesky, subscribe to this podcast, and share this episode with your friends and family.
Gerard Wedderburn-Bisshop worked as a Principal Scientist with Queensland Government Natural Resources, using satellite data to monitor three decades of vegetation cover and broadscale deforestation. He left the government in 2010 to co-author the Beyond Zero Emissions' Land Use Plan, a plan to take Australia's land use and agriculture emissions beyond zero.He now works pro bono with the NGO World Preservation Foundation, focusing on deforestation, land degradation and biodiversity loss. Gerard is also on the Zero Emissions Byron Land Use Advisory Panel and a Director of Replant Byron. Recently he co-authored a book for the Eating Our Way To Extinction documentary and has produced a series of explanatory videos on the climate impact of animal agriculture. Recent research includes carbon emissions from deforestation, with explanatory video. In this episode, we dive into Gerard's latest scientific article, "Deforestation—a Call for Consistent Carbon Accounting." The article shakes up how we think about carbon emissions, arguing that the current system for measuring deforestation's impact doesn't tell the full story. Gerard makes a strong case for a gross accounting approach across all industries, to provide us with a clearer picture of the damage and solutions. This discussion highlights the urgent need to totally revalue the environmental harms of agriculture – in a nutshell, Gerard urges us all to eat plants and plant trees! In this episode, we discuss:Gerard's work with the Queensland Government monitoring deforestationShocking stats on Australia's clearing ratesHis involvement with the Eating Our Way to Extinction documentary and associated resourcesThe work of Plant-Based TreatyA deep dive into Gerard's latest paper on consistent carbon accountingGross vs. net carbon accounting explainedHow the carbon cycle really worksThe overlooked value of forest drawdown potentialThe true environmental toll of animal agricultureRethinking climate policy with Gerard's insightsA sneak peek at his upcoming researchTranslating the numbers into meaningful actionTo view all the links to the websites and documents, visit the show notes on our website. Please support our work and enable us to deliver more content by buying us a coffee or becoming a member of Athletes for Nature.Follow us on Instagram and Facebook, subscribe to this podcast, and share this episode with your friends and family.
Adrian Whitehead (pictured) has spent most of life doing what he could to make people aware of environmental issues. Those early concerns have morphed into taking direct action on global warming and saw him play a significant role in the establishment of "Beyond Zero Emissions". Adrian was one of a small group that worked to see Melbourn's "Darebin City Council" become the first government in the world to declare a climate emergency. His efforts to take his concerns to a wider audience saw him set up "Council and Community Action in the Climate Emergency (CACE)".

Beyond Zero Emissions is an independent think tank that shows through research and innovative solutions how Australia can prosper in a zero-emissions economy. Over the past 10 years we have published research on how to decarbonise sectors of the economy such as energy, transport, buildings and heavy industry. Healthcare is a significant energy consumer - around 7% of national emissions come from healthcare facilities and services. Within this important sector, energy use holds the most emissions reduction potential, while manufacturing has the strongest ‘multiplier effect' - the ability to deliver widespread benefits from decarbonisation. We can power our healthcare sector on 100% renewable energy right now. Energy is used in health facilities for heating water, air, running medical equipment and keeping the lights on. It is also used in vehicles transporting supplies, patients and staff. With clean technologies available now, e.g. heat pumps and electric vehicles, there are readily-available means to run our healthcare system with renewable energy. We can power our manufacturing sector on 100% renewable energy right now. We know what happens when global supply chains are disrupted. A strong onshore manufacturing sector is not only important for a zero-emissions economy, but for all Australian industries - including healthcare. Today, imports meet approximately 80% of domestic demand for medical devices and diagnostics, while nearly all medical technology products manufactured in Australia are exported. When our healthcare system can source more of its construction materials, products and equipment from local suppliers, we shorten supply links, speed up transport time and provide more onshore jobs supporting this sector. Beyond Zero Emissions is working with partner organisations around Australia to revitalise our manufacturing sector with 100% renewable energy. We're building alliances of industry, government and community to support the decarbonisation of local manufacturing and supply chains in regional hubs where it's needed most. Resilience for healthcare depends on resilient energy and manufacturing supply chains - and achieving that means more renewable energy powering our economy. As CEO of Beyond Zero Emissions, Heidi has led transformative research on transitioning into a zero emissions economy, one in which we are not generating greenhouse gas emissions. We discuss what such a transition entails for Australia, from the economic investments required to the jobs that will be created and even what factories might look like in the future.
Igor Pershin had a near-death experience which made him take stock of his priorities and decide to give back in some way. This wake-up call sent him back to university to pursue postgraduate studies in the environment at Melbourne University, an addition to his Marketing degree, which acted as a springboard for his climate change activism career, spanning Beyond Zero Emissions, 350.org and ultimately founding his own non-profit, Less Meat Less Heat. Igor's focus was carbon-conscious eating, which opened up opportunities for him to present at UN climate conferences in Paris and Bonn, speak on the TEDx stage, and even develop an app. Interestingly, burnout forced Igor to take stock of his own health and understand the deeper systemic origins of environmental and human-health imbalances, where formal studies into nutrition and functional medicine led to his understanding that human health is directly linked to the health of our soils. He admittedly states that he was wrong about his non-profit and that, as Bob Gill says, “it's not the cow, it's how”, and discusses how his experience led him on a path away from the climate 'fight' and toward seeking solutions, finding permaculture and regenerative agriculture which integrates animals as vital roles in the building of soil health. Following Sadhguru along the Cauvery Calling trip across India to activate farmers and their communities to shift towards regenerative agriculture principles, he further deepened his passion in this space, which ultimately led him to seek out Zach Bush and Farmer's Footprint. Igor is currently the operations manager of Farmer's Footprint Australia and runs Natural Filters, sustainable bamboo charcoal water filters for the home, as well as a digital marketing consultancy specialising in solar energy. Her IWD hero is Julie Lyford who, with Groundswell Gloucester fended off a gas company in their valley and then won a court case to stop the Rocky Hill Coal mine going ahead. Julie is a graduate of the Women's environmental leadership course. Victoria says it's obvious that the present political, societal and corporate leadership is failing on climate action. a more collaborative, diverse and supportive form of leadership is needed. She speaks about Nicola Rivers who with young children could not see herself as a CEO but through mentoring came to the idea of sharing a CEO position which she now has as CoCEO of Environmental Justice Australia.WELA is there to open doors for women. To celebrate IWD we talk to two artists who lead us towards a change of heart around our connection to the land and landscape. They are Janet Laurence and Kerrie Leishman. Janet Laurence curated REQUIEM, a week of art events in an old Reservoir near Paddington Town Hall. As we descend into the sunken cathedral she invites us to lament and reflect on the black summer bush fires. It is a place of reckoning and the audience response in Qand A was all about "what can we do?"Art helps us to see what's invisible and Janet says blindness to nature breeds indifference. In front of her installation of waters made turbid by charcoal and dead matter left by the bushfires, many speakers such as Bruce Shillingsworth, urged us to think differently about mother earth and her lifeblood rivers. In an interview later Janet told me that the Art World did not easily accept her focus on climate change. But she does not want to plunge them into a defensive reaction and the sheer tenderness, the scale and the science behind her work is opening many minds.'I want you to linger': how Janet Laurence's art compels you to save the earth | Art and design | The Guardian Kerrie Leishman says that wind turbines create a new aesthetic. This challenges our usual idea of landscape. But like Janet Laurence she does not want to put us on the defensive. Her paintings are a subtle form of climate leadership taking us along as she comes to see the turbines as gentle giants. Her exhibition called "The New Beauty" was inspired by the wind farms at Waubra in Victoria.blog - Kerrie Leishman Paintings and Illustration Lucy Manne started the fossil Fuel Watch project during COVID. They report on such things as the media coverage of COVID recovery funds going towards gas projects rather than the jobs rich care economy. They also report on the national conversation around citizens' rights to protest. One example recently is when the mining lobby portrayed community groups as "vexatious" Graeme Samuels found that such legal challenges are the "foundation of our democracy". She recommended that we watch the Greenpeace film "Dirty Money" and join 350.org in their campaign to "Fund our Future not Gas".She talks about the shift in energy resulting from the Biden Administration's climate policy in the USA.Will this help us turn a distant 2050 target to a manageable 2030 target for reducing carbon emissions to zero? Her women's day hero is Milly Telford founder of SeedMob. The campaign she wants us to support is the Torres Strait Islanders' landmark human rights complaint against the Australian Government. They say the government has not adequately reduced Greenhouse gas emissions or helped them adapt to changing climate conditions. Lucy herself is a shining example of women's leadership coming up from the Australian Youth Climate Coalition and now as CEO.Australia – 350.org’s Fossil Fuel Watch project

On June 29 2020, Beyond Zero Emissions launched The Million Jobs Plan. The launch included a stellar line up including Christiana Figueres and Mike Cannon-Brookes. You can watch the webinar launch here. Climactic has adapted the event to audio, by shortening and producing the webinar recording into a version you can enjoy over headphones. The Million Jobs Plan is the framework to restore our economy. We've mapped out how we can rebuild our nation through practical projects that can restore our economy, modernise our industry, reskill our workforce and deliver a bright and secure economic future We've identified seven key sectors across our economy where strategic investment over the next five years would have the most impact and create the most jobs, including Energy Building Manufacturing Transport Recycling Land Use Training Jobs will be distributed around Australia, including in cities and regions already under pressure from the closure of traditional heavy industry and manufacturing, historical droughts and fires, and high unemployment. The next stage of this project will include shortlisting of several priority projects across Australia that we will present to the government over the coming months, along with the private investors and partnerships needed to realise these projects, create good, secure jobs and kick our economy back into gear. Tim Forcey, through extensive work at the University of Melbourne, and the thinktank Beyond Zero Emissions, is a household name in a very particular type of household. But the work he does on home energy efficiency is relevant to every household. He started the Facebook group that became My Efficient Electric Home four years ago, and it has started to rapidly pick up steam. Tim's experience and expertise is broad, but in this episode we focus a lot on heatpump technology, the radically more efficient technology for heating that he's on a crusade to popularise, and the lessons he's learnt for running a successful Facebook group. If you're joining us from MEEH, welcome! We look forward to bringing you more about this topic, just as soon as people step forward to help us, or you let us know what you'd like covered! History is littered with failed people and businesses who missed the trend. Sometimes it can be an entire country that fades when thinking becomes fossilised. The governement of countries like Australia are buried in the fossil past, burning coal to for electricty, when the future has moved on. Today we look at a future that makes sense for the economy and the environment. In this episode we get our hands on a model thermal solar power station, with Dr Stephen Bygrave, CEO Beyond Zero Emissions, Jodie Green, and Martin Powell. Hosted by Rod. Join us for a live event next week during National Science Week, at the Shine Dome in Canberra. We still have some tickets available for Can Science Save Humanity.
