EMOR- LA PUREZA DE LOS COHANIM by Rab Shlomo Benhamu
For weeks we have been wading through the many ritual laws of the book of Leviticus, known in Hebrew as Vayikra. In short, Vayikra consists of rules about a specific holy place (Mishkan), with very specific kinds of sacrifices (korbanot), that can only be performed by a specific group of people, the priests (Cohanim), who are the mediators between God and the Israelites. And then this week's double portion, Acharei Mot-Kedoshim, arrives on the scene and everything changes. We get what is affectionately referred to as the “Holiness Code.”Each week, a member of the clergy offers their personal perspective on a topic of their choice, such as the week's Torah portion, a Jewish holiday, ritual, custom, or history. [1]Prior to her position at the United States Department of State, she was a Special Correspondent and Senior Vice President for Jewish Broadcasting Service (JBS) and an Executive at Yeshiva University, the Jewish Theological Seminary of America and UJA-Federation of New York.[4][5][6]Cohanim has criticized the government in Iran In this podcast and what she has termed their "obsessive anti-Semitism". Cohanim criticized the social media company Twitter over what she deemed their hypocrisy in refusing to censor the Twitter account of the Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei, who has published countless anti-Semitic tweets calling for the "genocidal" elimination of the State of Israel, while simultaneously censoring the Tweets of President Trump. Cohanim went on to call upon Twitter to completely ban Khamenei from their platform. Cohanim has condemned the terrorist-designated group Hezbollah, citing their ties to Iran, and has publicly stated that the US praises countries which follow the US in designating Hezbollah a terrorist group and freezing their assets.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

The double Torah portion has a common thread: Those in need of purification, healing, and restoration must go through the agency of a human priest. This human priest is a type and shadow of Messiah Yeshua, a priest after the order of Malkhi-Tzedek. With types and shadows, expect some things to be identical, yet other things to be slightly different in application. As Pastor Mark and Tammy like to say, "patterns and principles." The one seeking restoration brings his or her various offerings to the doorway of the Tent of Meeting. From there, the service works its way inward to the bronze altar. The flames of the bronze altar purge out sin, and they provide atonement, or covering. It is from these very coals that the incense service moves the process of restoration even closer to the Divine Presence, the golden incense altar. In performing their services, the Cohanim were required to wear a turban-like headcover (the high priest wore a type of crown on his) and to be girded with a belt, or sash. Without these, the priests could not perform the service. In contrast, the metzorah, or leper, was required to let his hair go loose and wear torn clothes. These practices were forbidden to the priesthood when they served in the holy spaces, for they are identified with death and mourning. Then Moses said to Aaron and to his sons Eleazar and Ithamar, “Do not uncover your heads nor tear your clothes, so that you will not die and that He will not become wrathful against all the congregation.” (Le 10:6) “As for the leper who has the infection, his clothes shall be torn, and the hair of his head shall be uncovered, and he shall cover his mustache and cry, ‘Unclean! Unclean!'” (Le 13:45) “The priest who is the highest among his brothers, on whose head the anointing oil has been poured and who has been consecrated to wear the garments, shall not uncover his head nor tear his clothes.” (Le 21:10) The moral of the story? Those who minister on behalf of others have fewer “rights” and more “atonement, covering” responsibilities. Priests are not allowed the depth of grieving behaviors permitted to others. So what does that have to do with us? Following the pattern, from Shavuot onward, members of a royal priesthood need “working clothes,” not just a garment of salvation: A headcover, possibly a “credit crown” An untorn garment (why else was Yeshua's garment left whole?) A sash or belt Shavuot is the axis of the journey. The Mishkan and priesthood were inaugurated at Sinai to serve the tribal kingdom of royal priests. We should expect these priestly clothes to be explained in the context of Sinai. Having followed the Presence from Egypt to Sinai, from ”animal food” barley to the finest of wheat at Shavuot in untorn garments of salvation, it was time to receive the additional garments and crowns of a royal priesthood. When the Israelites said, “We will do, and we will hear,” they were awarded two...no, one...crown(s). Please SUBSCRIBE to our newsletter to get new teachings.

The Rabbis command hand washing upon waking, before prayer, before eating and on multiple other opportunities. When I studied in the Yeshiva, I had a bowl and cup of water under my bed so that I could wash my hands before my feet touched the floor. If you've been to an Orthodox wedding or a rest room in Israel you've likely seen a washing cup with two handles. What's with all the washing you say. I say, watch your mouth and….. Wash your hands! The four-gospel accounts of Yeshua's crucifixion and third-day resurrection do not seem to flow chronologically as we might like them to. Collectively, the gospel narratives inform us of the events of his last week in a rather disjointed and, in some cases, totally confusing way. Often, as we try to follow the events and make good sense of them, it raises more questions than answers. With today's podcast, Episode 125, and Part 12, I will continue to analyze the final week of Yeshua's ministry week leading up to his crucifixion and third-day resurrection. For example, here is a comparison of statements appearing in the gospel narratives. Mark 14:12. Now, on the first day of Unleavened Bread, when they killed the Passover lamb, His disciples said to Him, “Where do You want us to go and prepare, that You may eat the Passover?” Right. So, Yeshua's disciples are already slaughtering the Passover Lamb. Then, Yeshua sits down to eat the Passover, and firmly, it is at night. John 13:30. "...and it was night." So then, during supper, Yeshua said to his disciples: Luke 22:15. "With fervent (a longing) desire, I have desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer." Okay, I got it. Yeshua's disciples slaughter a Passover lamb, and they ask him where he wants to eat the Passover. Then, they eat the Passover at night, and during supper, He tells them that He desires to do this BEFORE He suffers. But then there is this statement about the religious leaders who would prefer not to get him crucified on Passover lest they stir up the people during the Feast. Mark 14:2. The chief priests (the heads of the Cohanim) and the scribes sought how they might take him (Yeshua) by trickery and put him to death. But they said, “Not during the feast, lest there be an uproar of the people.” Yet, Yeshua is crucified during the Feast, and, in fact, the day of his crucifixion is on the Preparation Day for Passover: John 19:14. "Now it was the Preparation Day of the Passover... But the Jerusalem religious leaders don't want to become unclean when coming into contact with Pilate and his ritual impurity in what they knew to be a "defilement of the deep." John 18:28. Then they led Yeshua from Caiaphas to the Praetorium, and it was early morning. But they themselves did not go into the Praetorium, lest they should be defiled, but that they might eat the Passover. So, what is going on here? Can all of this be reconciled so that it makes perfect sense? Absolutely, one hundred percent! It all makes perfect sense. With today's podcast program, you will discover, in part, how this "confusing" narrative conundrum is solved. To help you follow along with today's lesson, I encourage you to navigate my website and access a copy of the Chronology Calendar of Events on Exhibits "A" and "B."
