June and Moira fill Commander Lawrence in on their plans. June and Serena reunite while Gabriel confronts Nick.
Yvonne Strahovski says it herself. “She's hateable.” Serena's run throughout The Handmaid's Tale is absolutely littered with questionable and, in some cases, heinous decisions. But, this is the power of a force like Strahovski. Sometimes, in between terrible choices, Serena will get an opportunity to turn to the light, and even after everything she's done, you can't help but hope she finally reaches out, takes the lifeline, and forges a better path forward. However, time and time again, she back pedals and becomes consumed by self-righteousness, often at others' expense, and Season 6 is no different. At the top of the Emmy-winning series' sixth and final season, Serena was close to finding a way out. She winds up on a train to Alaska with June (Elisabeth Moss) where she can get a fresh start with Noah. However, old habits die hard and her behavior ultimately exposes her identity and turns the train passengers into an angry mob. Thanks to June, she manages to escape the riot, but rather than continue her pursuit of a new path forward, she returns to Gilead to settle in Commander Lawrence's (Bradley Whitford) New Bethlehem. While she's promised things will be different there, it quickly becomes clear that that's not the case, something Serena's own leadership tactics perpetuate. With The Handmaid's Tale nearing its big finish, Strahovski returned to Collider Ladies Night to dig into some of Serena's biggest moments in this final go-around, and to reflect on her experience tackling the character for six seasons. One of the guardians from the escape has survived, and loose ends aren't something Nick can afford. Meanwhile, Serena Joy receives a surprising push from Aunt Lydia: a nudge toward Commander Wharton. The Handmaid's Tale Season 6 Episode 3 - “Devotion” (Hulu)ANN DOWD The Handmaid's Tale Season 6 Episode 3, “Devotion,” brings the action, the politics, and the heartbreak. Hosts Paul and Caroline are back to unpack it all in our latest podcast episode. This time, June and Nick join forces on a high-stakes mission: rescuing Luke and Moira, who are trapped in no man's land after their work with Mayday draws the deadly attention of Gilead's guardian patrols. The tension is thick, and the emotional stakes are even higher. Meanwhile, in New Bethlehem, Commander Lawrence and Serena Joy begin their uneasy alliance as they host international delegates. The goal? Repatriate American refugees back to Gilead—under the pretense of safety and peace. But can such a place ever truly be safe? And back in the heart of Gilead, Aunt Lydia makes a devastating discovery: Janine has been sent to Jezebels. For Lydia, it's a cruel betrayal of everything she believed about Janine's value—and a sign that the system she's long upheld may be more broken than she can justify. In this podcast episode, we explore the theme of devotion—to people, causes, and institutions—and how that devotion is tested at every turn. With thrilling rescues, shifting alliances, and moral reckoning, “Devotion” delivers a heavy, layered hour of television. The Handmaid's Tale Season 6 Episode 2 - “Exile” (Hulu)YVONNE STRAHOVSKI The Handmaid's Tale Season 6 Episode 2, “Exile,” aired alongside the premiere—and we're back with our thoughts, theories, and plenty to say about these seismic shifts. In this episode, we finally get a long-awaited reunion: June and Nichole are with June's mother, Holly, living in the remote safety of Alaska. It's a rare moment of peace for June, but you can feel the storm building on the horizon. Meanwhile, Serena's journey takes a major turn. After arriving at a tranquil farm that shelters women and children refugees, it seems like she's found a safe haven—but it's short-lived. Gilead knows exactly where she is. And when Commander Lawrence offers her a way back—not just as a citizen, but as a leader in New Bethlehem—Serena chooses power over peace. In this episode of the podcast, hosts Paul and Caroline dive deep into the emotional weight of the mother-daughter reunion, the symbolism behind the episode's title, and what Serena's latest decision says about her ongoing struggle for identity and control. Today we drop the fourth episode of our character analysis series. On this episode, we'll be discussing the complicated and painfully pragmatic Commander Joseph Lawrence on The Handmaid's Tale on Hulu, played by one of our absolute favorite actors, Bradley Whitford. Though they're both hilarious, Bradley's performance is all the more astonishing when you realize in what extreme opposite realms Whitford's own politics and persona exist from Commander Lawrence's, despite Bradley embodying him to absolute perfection on screen. Lawrence's inclusion in the show came late in Season 2, but delivered a dose of eccentricity and levity that we hadn't even realized we so desperately needed. And he's continued to deliver that throughout the end of Season 5, keeping us laughing at his sarcastic quips despite the trauma of Gilead's hellscape surrounding them. Join us as we discuss how Lawrence has kept us on our toes since the moment he bounded down those stairs, question his ultimate loyalties and examine his deepening relationships with all of the characters on The Handmaid's Tale on Hulu. Whether you agree or disagree with our discussion, come find us on social media and share YOUR thoughts! We'd love to hear them and we post new content daily while we wait the long wait for Season 6. So come find us on Instagram and Twitter….err X! And check back soon for our next episode analysis - on another extraordinarily complicated character - Aunt Lydia!

(Photo by: Sophie Giraud/Hulu) After last week's disastrous trip into Gilead, we spent this week watching Luke pace around his makeshift cell next to cool-as-a-cucumber June. And did all that nervous energy do him any good? Next time you decide to join the Resistance, take some self-defense courses beforehand, Luke. Caroline has a lot to say again about Luke's overall lack of understanding when it comes to Gilead and its zealous supporters. Elsewhere in Gilead, Lydia manages to make an example out of a rapist - as long as it aligns with Commander Lawrence's need to wipe an enemy off the board. Or at least that's Paul's theory. Having Serena Joy and June in close quarters positioned within spitting distance of each other was never going to work out, was it? One might think Serena would only receive threats and aggressiveness from June, but as the title of this episode proves with "Dear Offred", she's perfectly willing to continue trying to prove who's the boss. [27:50] Legendary actor and activist Bradley Whitford (@BradleyWhitford) has starred in The West Wing, won an Emmy for Transparent, and is fresh off winning another Emmy for his brilliant role as Commander Lawrence in the global phenomenon, The Handmaid’s Tale. Also a dedicated political activist, Bradley openly and hilariously shares his thoughts on President Trump, how his childhood as a Quaker shaped his politics, why he likes bourbon, and which candidate for President he’s supporting for 2020. He also shares West Wing and personal stories you’ve never heard anywhere else. And as every guest on Angry Americans does, Bradley shares what has him angry, what makes him happy, and what was the very first car he ever owned. It’s Bradley Whitford uncensored and without commercial interruption. A funny, candid, insightful, uninterrupted conversation with one of the most dynamic and intelligent actors of our time. And as in every episode of Angry Americans, Paul Rieckhoff rips into the most urgent stories in America with a sharp and independent perspective. From the rising support for impeachment, to Robert De Niro’s F-bombs on CNN, to rocket testing in North Korea, to Bernie Sanders’ health problems, to the new Rambo movie, Rieckhoff digs into all of it. The Handmaid’s Tale Season 3 Episode 11 – Liars So many liars. Joseph lied to June. Serena lied to Fred. June lied to Winslow. Then did other stuff to him, too. Handmaid’s Tale Season 3 Episode 11, an episode named “Liars” lived up to its name. In this episode of Resisting Gilead, John Wombacher, a member of the Daily DVR podcasting community, joins me to discuss S3 E10 - Witness. We talk about Fred's obsession, June's crazy eyes, Commander Lawrence having to face the consequences of his actions head-on, and, of course, the critical difference between Scones and Muffins!
Black Mirror is back and still scaring Julian about the roll technology plays in his life. Jeremy is fine, and mumbling: I told you so.Let’s get the worst part over with: there are only three episodes. I know it’s crazy, but remember the first two seasons only had three or four episodes and we didn’t seem to mind. In an interview with creator Charlie Brooker, he mentioned Bandersnatch had another five hours of content, which he considered part of this season. Unfortunately, Bandersnatch was so dull, dry and boring I couldn’t make it through fifteen minutes of it while waiting two hours for a delayed flight. If you’re thinking of watching Bandersnatch, don’t. Avoid. While we only have three episodes, there are some heavy hitters this season. Anthony Mackie (Falcon from the Marvel Universe), Andrew Scott (Moriarty from BBC’s Sherlock) Topher Grace, and Miley Cyrus all star in their own episodes. And surprisingly, Cyrus delivers. The first episode explores men’s sexuality and alternative relationships through the internet. The second episode destroys the idea of privacy, with an unsettling display of a social media company having more power and information than law enforcement. The last episode is centered around the cult of celebrity and how technology can even steal someones humanity and create work without them. The pixels make an appearance again, one of the most mysterious parts of the Black Mirror universe. Episode three also seems to have a trend of delivering a happier ending with a heavy theme.Critics have not bee kind to Miley Cyrus, but she was pretty good in Episode three: “Rachel, Jack, and Ashley Too.” She pretty much played a depressed person of herself, searching for her musical voice. My only real concern is that the episode started to run dry.. And this isn’t Miley’s fault, but we’ve touched in all of these themes already. We’ve been warned about big brother in Arkangel Season 4. The USS Callister explored consciousness and the ethics behind the pixels. We’ve dealt with sex and relationships before in Season 4.Finally, there was no awesome WTF moment. You know what I’m talking about. I’m talking the pig, I’m talking about the woman in jail, and the black museum. Yes, you could say the Anthony Mackie episode had it but eh, not really. This has been a solid (hopefully last) Black Mirror season. Watch.A lot of TV shows have a hard time moving into Season three because they’ve usually squandered their time in Season two and stretched themselves too far. And sure the handmaid’s stitch is getting a little old, but what’s not getting old is the war of handmaids against the Men (and sometimes women - Aunt Lydia anyone?) of Gilled. But Season 3 feels different because we get stuck on the enigma of one of our newest characters: Commander Lawrence, played by Bradley Whitford (West Wing, Get Out) is the man who helped create the system. Forget the Waterfords, people go to Commander Lawrence’s house to meet him, not the other way around. But what’s so unusual is that he doesn’t do the ceremony, he allows June to read arguing that “she is smart and can do more good for the world outside of Gilled than in.” But on the flip side, he humiliates her, he is actively fighting the rebellion in Chicago and calling women “commodities.” You should watch just to figure out what he’s actually all about.Season 3 seems to want to point out to all of us that there is a real slippery slope out here. We see how fast June falls into the handmaid’s lifestyle, we even see how some of the women have cracked under pressure (Janinie, oh Janinie) and we see how subtle misogyny helped create this system. Handmaid is trying to tell us that we are capable of such evil, disguised as a God Complex. Season 3 is worth watching because we are past the shock value of how much more cruel can we be to women and now fully into how much do we value women. Sure, we are a long way off from stitching someone’s mouth shut, but we silence women everyday by not taking sexual assault seriously, denying them proper care in the emergency room, and every time we pay them less than men.Watch.
Just a warning, there will be spoilers for Season 3 episodes 1&2. Praise Be. When you get given two episodes in one go, it’s a given that a LOT is going to happen. And that’s how we feel after watching the latest episodes of The Handmaid’s Tale. This week, Elise and Nicolle are joined by mass Handmaid fan Kee Reece to discuss wtf just happened. From THAT library scene to Serena’s relationship with her mother to Aunt Lydia doing what Aunt Lydia does best, there’s a lot to get through. But the main question that we needed answering was about Commander Lawrence and his moods. So if you need to recap what you just watched, we’re here for you. This episode we discuss Season 3, Episode 3 of The Handmaid's Tale, covering domestic violence and abuse, our new favorite onion Commander Lawrence, mother/daughter relationships, and how Serena and June are transforming.
It's time to recap the events of The Handmaid's Tale season 3, episode 3, 'Watch Out', which reveals more of the curious character of Commander Lawrence, and his changing attitudes towards the women of his household. Bradley Whitford features in this week's episode* to provide unique insight into what makes the architect of the colonies tick. 'Watch Out' synopsis: June navigates a meeting where she must face both Commander Waterford and Nick. Serena Joy attempts to recuperate at her mother's home. Lawrence teaches June a hard lesson about the difficult decisions he makes as a Commander. (*Fiona summarises the questions from a pre-recorded group interview she participated in, with Whitford, in February.)
This podcast covers the final episode released for the season 3 opener - a pretty good episode called "Useful". Our favorite new scarf model and apex of amorality, Commander Lawrence, has a lot to say about the concept of "usefulness" and teases at June all episode long about it. Early on, viewers received little info to try and suss out Lawrence's true intentions. This episode didn't exactly spill the beans on that topic, but we got to have a much closer look at the man than ever before. We also saw Serena, a character completely outside the discussion of usefulness, decide her own path forward. Does it include Fred? Bad news, Fred... Just a warning, there will be spoilers for Season 3 episodes 1&2. Season 3 has begun, not quite with as much of a bang as last season, but we did receive some hope. Plus Aunt Lydia becomes the cockroach of Gilead when we find out she's survived, the Martha's have an epic plan that fails spectacularly. And we finally have the reunion Emily deserves. Somewhere in Gilead Rita and The Martha's have just orchestrated an amazing and harrowing escape for June. There's only one problem, June didn't escape. Somewhere on the outskirts of Gilead she waits, hood up, full of scorn and ready for revenge. Meanwhile, Emily is headed to Canada, Commander Lawrence is fully in the shit, Fred is being held upstais, Sirena is mourning the loss of Nichole, and maybe...just maybe coming to terms with the full scope of what she has truly helped create. Hosts Kari Lane, Lesley Powers, Veronica Barriga and Takira Shabrae discuss if they think we can trust Commander Lawrence, how crazy mama bear Serena has become, and how Eden was not who we thought. Did you trust Eden? Her moment with Nick when they forgave each other... so sweet and sad! The Resist Sister for the week featured the lift on a 40 year ban in Iran that prevented women from attending sporting events. For news, the role and distrust of Eden was explained - society always seems to have a thing against teenage girls. Finally, the finally is next week!!! How will it all end?! With two episodes to go in season 2 June once again finds herself in the Waterford house for tour number three. Every relationship is full of moving parts and volatile emotions as we head into the finale with more questions than answers. We finally get the answer to "Who is in the pool!?" as Eden and Isaac play star crossed lovers and end up paying the ultimate price. Meanwhile Serena has what she's always wanted but it may not quite be what she bargained for. We also get our Bradley Whitford sighting as Emily is stationed with Commander Lawrence, the "architect of Gilead's economy" who is.....a bit of a mystery. Bottom line...there is one episode after this and we have ZERO idea as to where it's going. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/themaydaypodcast/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/themaydaypodcast/support
