The final season of 'The Handmaid's Tale' arrives, more than two years after the conclusion of the fifth season. While the show aims to wrap the story of June Osborne, fans of the show do have more to look forward to as a spinoff series based on Margaret Atwood's novel "The Testaments" has been given the green light. While no launch date has been given, we know that at least one actor — Ann Dowd who portrayed Aunt Lydia — will return. For now, fans will get to enjoy one last stretch of 10 episodes. We couldn't have imagined a more random episode to leave you with before spring break, but hopefully there's a little something for everyone here at Breakfast All Day. We begin with "The Friend," a warm and wise drama about grief, healing, and a 150-pound Great Dane. We don't totally agree on how well this movie works, but the dog is amazing. Starring Naomi Watts, Bill Murray, Carla Gugino and Ann Dowd. In theaters. Next up is the four-part anthology "Freaky Tales," from "Captain Marvel" filmmakers Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, returning to their indie roots. Pedro Pascal, Ben Mendelsohn, Jay Ellis, Dominique Thorne and Too $hort are among the stars of this intertwined homage to 1987 Oakland. In theaters. Finally, we catch up with "Holland," but you're welcome to avoid it. Nicole Kidman, Matthew Macfadyen and Gael García Bernal star in this overly familiar dark comedy about secrets lurking beneath the pristine veneer of small-town America. Streaming on Prime Video. No news this week because Christy's on vacation. But if you're a member of our Patreon, keep an eye out for our recap of "The White Lotus" season finale on Monday morning. Thanks for being here! The Anthony Mackie-led vehicle, which is the fourth Captain America film and 35th MCU film overall, managed to exceed somewhat meager box office projections, however, its reception with both critics and audiences isn't as definitive a victory. The film is currently sitting at 51% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and has earned a B- CinemaScore, which is among some franchise lows for Marvel.According to exclusive reports from Deadline, the Mike Flanagan-penned, solo Clayface film seems to be on track to meet its targeted September 2026 release, with DC leadership set to hear pitches from potential filmmakers next week. Two noteworthy names rising to the top as candidates to helm the rumored horror-tragedy include Speak No Evil's James Watkins and Truth or Dare's Jeff Wadlow – with the expectation that casting will quickly follow suit once a director is locked-in. James Gunn has described the film as a DCU project, but it is still unclear whether it will connect to any existing projects or continuity. Christopher Nolan's next film for Universal, The Odyssey, has assembled an understandably stacked cast that includes the likes of Tom Holland, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong'o and Jon Bernthal to name a few; now Mia Goth has joined the cast in an undisclosed role, while Matt Damon's role has finally officially been revealed to the title of role of Odysseus as announced via a photo shared from the film's X account. The retelling of Homer's epic poem is slated for a July 17, 2026 release. Universal has debuted the first full trailer for the live action remake of How To Train Your Dragon ahead of its June 13 release.Hulu released a first-look teaser for the final season of The Handmaid's Tale, premiering with three episodes on April 8, followed by weekly releases until the May 27 finale. Compliance is a 2012 American thriller film written and directed by Craig Zobel and starring Ann Dowd, Dreama Walker, Pat Healy, and Bill Camp. The plot of the movie is closely based upon an actual strip search phone call scam that took place in Mount Washington, Kentucky in 2004, although the names of the real-life figures were changed. In both the film and the real-life incident, a caller posing as a police officer convinced a restaurant manager and others to carry out unlawful and intrusive procedures on an innocent employee.   The film received generally positive reviews and Dowd's performance as the manipulated restaurant manager was met with critical acclaim, earning her the National Board of Review Award for Best Supporting Actress. The review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes reports an 89% approval rating with an average rating of 7.5/10 based on 140 reviews. The website's consensus reads, "Anchored by smart, sensitive direction and strong performances, Compliance is a ripped-from-the-headlines thriller that's equal parts gripping and disturbing." On Metacritic, it has a score of 68 out of 100 based on 32 reviews, indicating "generally favorable reviews". At the premiere at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival, Compliance was met with controversy, as the audience's response included several walkouts and shouting matches during the film's question and answer session.

Spooktober continues as we discuss the second The Simpsons Halloween special Treehouse of Horror II. Then Indy previews his Spooktober pick, the divisive 2018 psychological horror film Hereditary.   I Love This You Should Too is hosted by Samantha & Indy Randhawa   "Treehouse of Horror II" is the seventh episode of the third season of the American animated television series The Simpsons. It first aired on Fox in the United States on October 31, 1991. It is the second annual Treehouse of Horror episode, consisting of three self-contained segments, told as dreams of Lisa, Bart and Homer and is the only Treehouse of Horror episode to date where each segment name is not stated inside the episode. In the first segment, which was inspired by W. W. Jacobs's short story The Monkey's Paw and The Twilight Zone episode "A Small Talent for War", Homer buys a Monkey's Paw that has the power to grant wishes, although all the wishes backfire. In the second part, which parodies the Twilight Zone episode "It's a Good Life", Bart is omnipotent, and turns Homer into a jack-in-the-box, resulting in the two spending more time together. In the final segment, Mr. Burns attempts to use Homer's brain to power a giant robotic laborer.   Hereditary is a 2018 American psychological horror film written and directed by Ari Aster in his feature directorial debut. But this is a pretty in-depth exploration of Terminator Zero with the showrunner, so don't take our word for it, listen to the episode!THE SCIENCEDOES IT FLY: I'm curious, as you were putting the pieces of this together, did you do any research? Did you talk to scientists so that the audience would watch this and say, “yeah, this flies. This works for us.” MATTSON TOMLIN: Yeah. Probably not to the degree that the PhD guy would be happy with me, but definitely a lot of reading about Turing tests today and about what the capabilities [of AI] are. It's kind of one of those things where, as far as we know and what the public facing information is, we're not quite there yet … I think that the jumps [in capability] are exponential. So there was still a level of invention. It's a sci-fi show, so you've got to make some stuff up, but we also made  sure that it never felt like it was fully beyond the bounds of what's actually happening out there today. THE STORYDiF: When was the moment during production that you as a writer, as a showrunner, felt like, “yeah, this thing has wings. This thing can fly.” MT: There's a couple of different answers to that, because it comes in stages. I feel really proud of the show. I think that there are stages … For me, the first time that that happened was while I was writing, and I got through episode four [and then] once I started writing episode five, it's like, “oh, now the plane has taken off, and now we're at altitude, and now, actually, I have to think about landing.” Having these four episodes, and I can I can read that 100 or so pages and go, “I stand by this, this is working now I just need to land the plane.” It's not that I felt like, “oh, I've got this.” But I felt like there was enough material that there's a story that is being told now that feels worth telling. That was kind of the first time. The second time was definitely once art started to come in from [anime studio] Production IG, and seeing the level at which they were executing and [knowing] this is going to look beautiful. I think then the third time was certainly the working on the score and working with [Terminator Zero composers] Michelle Birsky and Kevin Henthorn and finding a sonic identity for the score that felt like Terminator, and at the same time, does its own thing. We didn't just want to be playing the same stuff, it needed to feel inherently its own.THE VIBEDiF: Why was the decision made to do this as an anime?MT: From a creative standpoint, you're just able to do things that haven't been done before, because if you're making a movie and a movie that's in a franchise like Terminator, then there are certain expectations, certain beats that it has to hit. And, you know, those movies are $100-200 million movies. A [movie of that scale] is going to be a certain kind of thing. And this isn't that. Not only because it's animated, but because it's an anime. So it creates these variables … It's an opportunity to kind of breathe a lot of new life into it …it was kind of driven by story and an opportunity to just do something the franchise hadn't done before.WANT MORE FROM DOES IT FLY?We also took a deep scientific look at the paradox that so much of the entire Terminator franchise revolves around. The Terminator Paradox Explained!

This episode of Does it Fly? is presented by Netflix, the exclusive home of Terminator Zero, starring Timothy Olyphant, Rosario Dawson, Sonoya Mizuno, André Holland, and Ann Dowd. Terminator Zero is now streaming only on Netflix.“Come with me if you want to learn.”OK, fine, that's not what anyone says pretty much anywhere in the Terminator franchise. But haven't you ever wondered just how some of the time travel concepts that set up one of the most successful and beloved sci-fi movie and TV franchises of all time work? This episode is really only dealing with the “grandfather paradox” as it relates to The Terminator (1984), James Cameron's original sci-fi horror masterpiece that pretty much strapped a stardom rocket to Arnold Schwarzenegger's back and helped redefine the boundaries of sci-fi and action storytelling on screen. It also kicked off one of the most sprawling and beloved science fiction franchises of a generation. Check it out here or on our YouTube page!SUGGESTED VIEWING While we're pretty much only focused on that first film for this episode, if you want to expand your Terminator knowledge, it can feel like a lot. When in doubt when you're navigating a big franchise that occupies different places on its own timeline, we always advise you not overthink it and just watch in release order. So we'll give you that along with some suggestions to make this as fun and painless as possible. The Terminator (1984)If you want a sci-fi action movie that's filmed with the pacing and sense of dread of a horror movie, you can't go wrong with the original. A legitimate classic of 1980s genre cinema, it has endured for a reason. If you only watch one movie in the franchise, this is the one!Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991)If you only watch one other Terminator movie, make it 1991's bigger and more technically groundbreaking sequel. For those of you who want a more summer blockbuster action sensibility as opposed to the first film's horror undertones, you can just go ahead and watch Judgment Day on its own, as it does an excellent job getting you up to speed even if you haven't seen the original. Bigger action sequences and some eye-popping special effects make this one essential viewing.Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003)Probably not as bad as you've heard, but not exactly essential viewing either. This one builds out the lore of how Skynet rose to power and has a few bonkers battle sequences, but if time is of the essence, stick to the first two movies. It's also the first entry in the franchise that starts messing with the canon in ways that future installments try to smooth out.Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles (2008-2009)The franchise's first expansion into TV has a devoted cult following, and with good reason! Still, that's a lot of viewing hours, and it isn't strictly faithful to the lore of the series as a whole. This can be viewed as its own self-contained alternate timeline within the Terminator universe.Terminator Salvation (2009)Terminator Salvation is a direct sequel to the events of Rise of the Machines…and thus a prequel to the first film. And despite starring Christian Bale at the height of his stardom as John Connor, it's…well, let's just say it's not essential viewing. But if you're keeping track so far, the canonical events of the franchise go from the first three movies to this one…which depicts events prior to the first film. Got it? Good, because it ain't getting any easier!Terminator Genisys (2015)This one is essentially a reboot of the entire franchise and…you know what? You can skip it. Trust us.Terminator: Dark Fate (2019)Somewhat maligned upon release, but better than you've heard! We're back in alternate timeline territory, though, as this film ignores everything other than the first two movies and instead acts as a direct (if belated) sequel to Terminator 2: Judgment Day. Honestly, worth your time, especially if you're looking to condense the franchise to a more digestible three films (in this case The Terminator, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, and Terminator: Dark Fate)Terminator Zero (2024)Netflix is the exclusive home of this first animated Terminator outing, made by the same anime studio who brought the classic Ghost in the Shell to screens. Terminator Zero functions both as a self-contained Terminator adventure (meaning you don't necessarily need knowledge of the rest of the franchise to enjoy and understand it) and also as something that enriches the lore of the films. Lushly animated and boasting a cast that includes Timothy Olyphant, Rosario Dawson, Sonoya Mizuno, André Holland, and Ann Dowd, serious fans won't want to miss this.FURTHER READING Do you want to delve a little deeper into the facts, concepts, and stories Hakeem and Tamara referenced in today's episode? Of course you do! Grandfather ParadoxThe central concept of this episode and the one we wanted to explore the most! This article has the most succinct explanation of a rather headache-y concept we've ever seen. “...the idea that a cause must precede its effect. The paradox suggests that a cause is eliminated by its own effect, thus preventing its own cause and essentially becoming reverse causation.” It goes on to explain some of the other scientific concepts that inform this pretty well. For a little additional context, you can also check out this piece. The Bootstrap ParadoxThe other paradox that informs our discussion (and pops up often in pop culture time travel stories). Our question is…why is Northrop Grumman writing about this. WHAT DO THEY KNOW THAT THEY AREN'T TELLING US?!?Heisenberg Uncertainty PrincipleHey, remember this one from our episode on the transporter from Star Trek? We don't think you can do any better for quality book-learnin' on the subject than this article from CalTech.Relativity TrainIn case our animation illustrating Hakeem's point about viewing actions in a train traveling at a different speed than the observer, Harvard University made a pretty substantial meal out of the experiment which you can read about (and watch) here.WANT MORE FROM DOES IT FLY?Just a reminder, if you haven't watched our exploration of Xenomorph biology as it was explored in the first Alien movie (which also happens to be one of our most popular episodes), now's a good time to get to it!Check out our episode on the most infamous moment in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, which just celebrated its 40th anniversary. I first rented this in high school and it has been on my list to watch again. This film grew on us as we compared to other films of the time that feel more like a documentary and a visual portrait. The soundtrack was completely up our alley with bands like Babes in Toyland, Helium, and Patti Smith. Today we drop the latest episode of our character analysis series. On this episode, we'll be discussing Aunt Lydia, one of the most…unique characters in The Handmaid's Tale television show on Hulu, played by the incredible Ann Dowd. We were first introduced to Lydia in the very first episode of Season 1 as the terrifying “Aunt” who had Janine's eye removed at the first sign of an attitude from her. That made quite the first impression and she has continued to make many more memorable impressions as the show has continued through Season 5 so far. Eventually though, eccentric as it was, in some ways her repetitive behavior allowed both June and the audience to get a little bit of a handle on her motivations. In this episode we discuss those in depth. While we endeavored not to discuss The Testaments plot for the sake of those who haven't read it, we have read it, and there are inevitable implications for her future in our discussion - so please don't listen to this episode if you don't want any of those! This week, we're comparing the most beloved movie ever made by William Friedkin and one of the last movies made by William Friedkin. That's right, The Exorcist: Believer came out recently as a reboot sequel of The Exorcist, which ignores all the subsequent sequels in true Halloween (2018). In addition to our review of that film, we discuss Friedkin's The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial, an adaptation of a 50s play (originally a novel and also a film) set in the modern day. Despite being a "TV movie," it's actually fantastic? Show Notes 00:00:00 – The Exorcist: Believer 00:30:15 – The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial The Exorcist: Believer was directed by David Gordon Green, who co-wrote the screenplay with Peter Sattler and story credits that include Green, Scott Teems, and Danny McBride. The cast includes Leslie Odom Jr., Lidya Jewett, Olivia O‘Neill, Jennifer Nettles, Norbert Leo Butz, Ann Dowd, and Ellen Burstyn. The film came out on October 6 through Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions, and it has a 111-minute runtime. The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial was directed and written by William Friedkin, based on Herman Wouk's eponymous 1953 play, itself based on Wouk's 1952 novel The Caine Mutiny. The cast includes Kiefer Sutherland, Jason Clarke, Jake Lacy, Monica Raymund, and Lance Reddick. Additionally, the film premiered at the Venice International Film Festival on September 3 and came out on Paramount+ with Showtime on October 6. It has a 109-minute runtime. In the fall and winter of 2021/2022 Laura Cahill taught screenwriting to 8 young acting students from Kyiv on Zoom in English. Their last class was February 6th, 2022. The war started 18 days later. Most of the students fled their homes. Laura reunited with her students and started teaching them playwriting. Most of those students were still in Ukraine, but some had fled. The May class went so well, they decided to keep going, so on June 1st, the two classes came together and formed Young Playwrights Ukraine.
