Brett Hansen is one of the nicest guys in entertainment and along with his wife Elissa, run their beloved Larrikin Puppets. Putting smiles on faces and following their dreams. This is a great insight into the world of puppetry, as well as an inspiring tale of Brett's humble beginnings from playing keys in one of Brisbane's finest metal acts, Headkase, to heading to New York and learning the art of puppetry from the guys behind Sesame Street. Brett and Elissa now run a successful business making children happy with their impressive cast of puppets, including my personal favourite Trogg(who appears in the Darkcell clip “Raise Your Horns”). Combichrist return to Australia for the first time in almost a decade in October, with a new album in tow, and frontman and founding member Andy LaPlegua says the band are champing at the bit to once again reconnect with their fans."Im excited man," he enthused. "We haven't been there for almost ten years so it's about time to come back! We've got a lot of new material since the last time we were there so we're gonna be playing all kinds of stuff. we like to please people so you've gotta play the old stuff (laughs) we've got a new album out so we're definitely gonna be playing some of that too."Combichrist are known for their intense live shows, with LaPlegua only too happy to elaborate."It's mayhem man," he laughed. I know I probably say this all the time but I don't talk to you all the time so I can say it I guess (laughs) I hate to play a show where people show up and it's just seeing a band play. I like to be more than that. I want it to be something that I do together with everyone that shows up. its not just a band and the people who watch. I don't want people to leave with the feeling that they just saw another show, I kind of want them to feel like they've just left a party. they left the place where they were hanging out with their friends all night - even though they may not know anyone going in - and that's the beautiful thing about music is you get that connection through music. when you go to a show you don't need to know anyone to have a good time. Since their inception in 2012, Gold Coast rockers RedStarBorn have wasted little time in establishing themselves as a band on the rise.After the critically acclaimed debut E.P Dead Philosophy in 2015, the pressure has been on the band to put out their first full-length album but the boys have resisted peer group pressure to sit back and do things at their own pace.Along the way, they have played with and supported popular local outfits Darkcell and Twelve Foot Ninja before finally getting their chance to support a legendary international headliner last year when they opened for Stryper.Since then interest in RedStarBorn has gathered momentum, and the recent release of the lead single 'The Threshing Floor' from their upcoming long-awaited debut album has seen the band thrust back into the spotlight."Some songs kind of happen", mused vocalist/guitarist Dan Newton, explaining the song, "but this one came together over quite a period of time - maybe six months when you think about all of the components that went into it. The essence of the song: the message, is we all go through difficult times and we all face that really dark part of our lives - some of us probably more often than not and for longer periods than others - but we're faced with what seems like an insurmountable situation. Me and the other guys in the band have been around for a while and doing this a long time and we've each of us individually seen some pretty heavy, horrible and crappy stuff and we know what it's like to absolutely hit the wall and feel like you're done. What we bring in this song is a bit of a perspective in that to say 'you know what, we understand what it's like to feel like your whole worlds caving in and there's nowhere to go and no solution. Whether it be grief or absolute hopelessness or financial pressure or addiction - whatever it is. Everybody has their tragedy and it's real but sometimes there's no immediate solution. There's no way to fix it if you lose someone. That's it, they're gone, and you have to figure out how to live with that and work through it so we fashioned this song that uses a metaphor of this ancient place. It's a biblical metaphor and a real thing used in ancient civilisations where they would bash the wheat for its nutrients and you would be left with the precious, valuable wheat and grain which you could then make bread etc. The actual threshing process is horrible and it's violent and it's chaotic and I think we each go through these things in our lives where we feel like we've been smashed completely. Invariably, we go through it and come out the other side and hopefully if we manage to weather the storm we are stronger for it".In the full interview Dan goes into detail about the stunning film clip for 'The Threshing Floor', spills the beans on their debut album and when it is likely to be released, runs through the album musically, explains why the band are now a trio after starting life as a four-piece, talks about the bands sound and how difficult it is to put a fresh spin on new music, their upcoming shows with Bon But Not Forgotten and more.
Shayne has a chat with Minoru Niihara from Japanese legends Loudness ahead of their Australian tour, and speaks with Darkcells Jesse Dracman about the bands brilliant new self titled album.
"We wanted to start the year off with a bang", declared Darkcell vocalist Jesse Dracman, "and what better way to do it than with a song with more hooks than a Hellraiser movie and more groove than a 4th of July explosion so we decided to put out a song which is kind of like our latest and ultimate ode to all things horror. We wanted to release something up tempo and groovy and just give fans a subtle hint of the heavy direction we're heading in on the new album".Although remaining coy on exact details of the album, Dracman was more willing to talk about its' musical direction."It's definitely got a lot more depth and heaviness to it", he admitted. "It's gonna surprise a lot of people. It still has a lot of the hooks and grooves that are synonymous with everything that is Darkcell but we have really evolved the sound. I feel with every album we've kicked it up a notch and put in more of ourselves. The last couple of years we've learnt so much about ourselves musically which has helped us expand our horizons with how we approach songwriting".In the full inteview Jesse goes into more detail about the added heaviness on the album, explores a couple of the songs which are co-produced by surprise guests, reveals details about an overseas festival they are playing, discusses new international label Dark Tunes, teases an Australian tour, talks Psycho Circus and more.
After a year which promised so much New Clear Vision almost imploded not long after releasing their debut album due to the age-old problem of member changes, but after a period of reflection and renewed enthusiasm vocalist Brad Bromfield says the band is ready to pick up the pieces and make up for lost time."Both guitarists left, which was a shame, but there was fuck all we could do about it", he reflected. "The same thing happened with another of my bands a long time ago and it's a bit of a heartbreak mate so I didn't know if I was going to keep going and just sat in my own shit (laughs). I know C.J (drummer) was heartbroken too so we didn't do much for a while".Going from the high of releasing new music to being on the cusp of extinction was almost too much to bear for Bromfield, with him openly admitting it was hard to put on a brave face and keep going."It's crushing mate", he sighed. "As you know we had the King Parrot and Superheist shows at the start of the year and our last gig was with Darkcell at Psycho Circus so all in all we had a pretty good year. The album was cool and we had lots of plans but things didn't go that way. “THE BEAST MUST OCH AYE MAIR LIKE IT!” With The Family Beast busy pitching a Netflix series to cash in on the ecstatic reactions to Mini-Beast’s debut vocal track, and Illogical Volume hunched over an inter-dimensional toilet seat with time to kill, today is the day where we get to find out whether SILENCE! can survive a sudden influx of vile Northern nationalism! It’s also the day where Illogical Volume gets himself banned from the nationalist dance party and for Dundee for mistakenly saying “Glaswegian” when he means “Scottish”, but no one ever said access to the Reviewniverse came cheap! Who is the nicest Mindless? A hint: he’s not on this podcast! Since he’s mysteriously lacking in sponsorship deals from Dave’s Comics of Brighton, Illogical Volume takes a punt on his local library instead. Somehow this devolves into Mssrs Lactus and Volume blethering on about how dead relatives can give you totally meaningless power – a “redeeming fart” is also mentioned but not heard. In a section that he didn’t remember to call SILENCE! at the Art Gallery, Mr Volume enthuses about the Frank Quitely: The Art of Comics exhibition currently running at the Kelvingrove Art Gallery in Glasgow and recommends that SILENCE! listeners from all dimensions take the opportunity to really immerse themselves in all those footery wee lines and brilliant panel layouts. Hello followers! We are honored to celebrate our tenth episode with a mix from Adriano Giliberti better known as Darkcell. Besides being a sound engineer for some time, Darkcell’s analog concept’s is based on instinctive use of machines to produce. He is fascinated with the interaction between man and machine, something you might witness in episode if you listen carefully enough. Darkcell is also the record label owner of Fluxus Rec which he founded in 2011. With releases by himself, Myk Derill and Mary Velo just to name a few, the discography on this Italian based label contains productions by artists that have a “no compromise” approach to techno music. In our opinion this is how the art form is best preserved. Prepare to go on a journey for the next hour or so as you listen to Monument Podcast number 10. Using computers as well as hardware synthesis, Tim was able to warp and mutate sounds as well as introducing drums to help build up more emotion throughout each tracks. This ambient project was developed into an unhealthy obsession where he was constantly aiming for more complex atmospheres and more relentless percussive elements. Sharing the stage with the likes of Surgeon, Dave Clarke, Gary Beck, Grovskopa, Audio Injection and Vince Watson, Timothy has learned to develop his mixing style which often comprises of up to 4 tracks at once, plus extra samples and loops.
