This week Tom & Zeus review the 1979 polarizing KISS album, "Dynasty." This was KISS' 7th studio album and the 21st KISS studio album reviewed by SIOL. Dynasty was the first studio album since Love Gun in 1977. This was the longest time between studio albums for KISS. It was the last studio to feature all original members until Psycho Circus in 1998. The album was produced by Vini Poncia, who Peter Criss demanded and had previously produced Peter's 1978 solo album. The band was definitely changing. Super KISS had been formed. The band wore flashier outfits with capes and became more comic book-like. They experimented with more pop and yes, even disco, with their huge international smash, "I Was Made For Lovin' You, written with this new upcoming songwriter, Desmond Child. Producer Vini Poncia was instrumental in this new sound, however the band did write some of their best songs, like the brilliant, "Sure Know Something." Yes brilliant! However, this departure in sound and style alienated a lot of the KISS Army. The album also featured all four members sing at least on song, just as they did on Love Gun. However, this album featured Ace Frehley on three songs, by far his most. Gene Simmons only sang on only two. The album also featured ghost player, Anton Fig on drums. Peter Criss only played drums on his song, "Dirty Livin'." The album cover was the iconic photo of the four faces of the band. The inside photo of the band in black also became legendary. As usual the guys breakdown and analyze the tracks and rank the songs SIOL style. As always, they then compare the album and album cover and rank it against the previous studio albums reviewed. So tune in to another must listen to SIOL album review. Epsiode 51:PSYCHO CIRCUS (25th Anniversary) After the success of the 1996 Alive Worldwide Reunion Tour, everyone asked one question "what's next?" Surely the band would record a new album, and they did just that... well kinda. In 1998, Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Ace Frehley, and Peter Criss entered the studio to record their first album together since 1979's Dynasty. Much like Dynasty, Ace and Peter would practically appear on the album in name only, with the exception of Peter only playing drums on one track and singing lead vocals two. Ace only played guitar on two tracks and sang on 2 tracks. The remaining drum and guitar tracks were played by Kevin Valentine and future KISS lead guitarist, Tommy Thayer, both uncredited. Most of these decisions were made by producer, Bruce Fairbairn. On this episode, Nick, Nikko, and Rob discuss the 25th Anniversary of Psycho Circus. Taking off the KISS goggles and ignoring the drama in the recording studio, is there a solid KISS album underneath the tracks of Psycho Circus or this just KISStory repeating itself? So, take off the drama blinders, raise your glasses and get ready to toast the anniversary of Psycho Circus...welcome to the show! No 606º episódio do Podcast mais Rock'n Roll da internet Rômulo Metal, Leandro Pereira e Carlos Augusto Monteiro batem papo sobre o Psycho Circus do Kiss, analisando faixa por faixa. O post PodCast #606 – Kiss: Psycho Circus apareceu primeiro em Crazy Metal Mind.
First off, it's podcast malpractice that we didn't make this entire episode about the video for the KISS song "Psycho Circus". (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BWIW6Ti0PbE) That's on us. We weren't even that distracted by the ho-hum Lithtech shooter that is KISS colon Psycho Circus colon The Nightmare Child. We just got very wrapped up in the concept of KISS itself, which basically amounts to Insane Clown Posse for boomers. This is also part two of our inadvertent duology of "Our Carnival Isn't Like the Carnival You Grew Up With, It's a Little Dark and Twisted!" games.
“We've got a little surprise for you tonight…” We've been talking about doing this for so long now that many of you (ourselves included) had almost given up thinking it was ever going to happen, like it was just another instance of the usual psilly nonsense that manifests deep within the Bunkerpoon Studios whilst surfing relaxer fueled waves of madness. Well, the aforementioned “psilly nonsense” has finally manifested into a multi-dimensional, multi-tentacled reality! Now, just so we're perfectly clear and we're all on the same page here, we are absolutely NOT talking about “Knights in Satan's Service” or “Kids in Satan's Service” or ANYTHING having any affiliation with “Satan's Service” in any way, shape, or form!!! And we're definitely NOT talking about “Keeping it Super Simple” either. But actually, in all reality, we definitely kinda are… And we definitely kinda did… A lot. (“Yeah, yeah…”) It's time to strap in for “a hard day at the office” and put on your finest “cheetah skin boots” to go with your “gloves of shame” to ensure you're outfitted with the proper ensemble to do “The Paul Dance” before Mr. Unicorn gnaws through another mic cable again. I dare say 95% of the public has not heard of the "Killjoy" franchise. From Charles Band's Full Moon Features, this is bottom of the barrel entertainment. While the series starts out as horror, it switches to horror-comedy by the third movie. The best film in the bunch is the fifth-- "Killjoy's Psycho Circus". Dont expect these movies to make any sense. Just enjoy the over the top performances of Trent Haaga (as Killjoy) and Victoria de Mare (as Betty Boop). And for the food/drink tie in, Killjoy Drinks provides a wide selection of non alcoholic beverages in every category: wine, beer/ale, liquors, mixes, etc. Check them out at killjoydrinks.com Photo Credit: Here

We got lucky to cross paths with Robin Diaz, a seasoned drummer who's been around the LA scene since the early '90s. Ever since his first tour when he was 16, Robin hasn't stopped performing and recording with some of the most iconic rock artists of our time and, as a result, you probably heard him beat the shit out of his drums more times than you can imagine. You think I exaggerate? Well, just look at the list of people he's been collaborating with: Courtney Love, Billy Corgan, Líve, Simple Plan, Candlebox, Bauhaus/Peter Murphy, Chris Cornell, 3Doors Down, Danzig, Avril Lavigne, and countless more (check for yourself: https://www.robindiaz.com/). Talking to Robin was not only fantastic because he's a fucking great drummer but also because he's been a key witness of the evolution of the LA scene. For him, it all started at a rehearsal spot in Santa Monica. At night, he was sleeping in his van on the parking lot and during the day he spent his time mastering his craft, drumming until he couldn't drum anymore. Around him, bands like Kiss or Rage Against The Machine were rehearsing. Robin, patiently kept drumming and drumming until he caught the attention of someone who would recognize his talent and need him. That's what happen, for example, when his idols Kiss called him to help record the demos of what would become Psycho Circus. And that's only one of the many stories that he told us on the podcast. I guess for Robin, it all came down to dedication and embracing a « Yes mentality ». He said "yes" to every opportunity that could give him a new experience but most of all, any experience where he would have fun. Also, he was staying close to the scene. The question is, is there still a scene? To Robin, there's no doubt about this, there's a scene. He praises new bands like S8nt Elektric and as much as the LA club scene can suck, bands need to stick together and impose their vision and determination so they can grow together. That's exactly what we've been advocating for with our podcast and that's why our little community will grow and get somewhere. Because we share Robin's dedication and because we believe in that simple thing: together, we're stronger. We're delivering a big KISSmas gift this week as we are joined by producer/engineer Mike Plotnikoff for Albums Unleashed - KISS Psycho Circus! This album, released in 1998, promised to be the return of the original fearsome foursome to the studio. Unfortunately, it turned out to be anything but that.Psycho Circus has become a very polarizing album among the KISS fan base. Coming off the heels of the successful Alive Worldwide reunion, anticipation was high for a reunion album. The final product, however, would include more Tommy Thayer and Kevin Valentine contributions than those of Ace Frehley or Peter Criss.Mike Plotnikoff joins us for this in-depth talk about the making of Psycho Circus. After growing up a KISS fan, it was a big deal for Mike to be involved in the project. Producer Bruce Fairbairn had been on a run of big albums from bands like Bon Jovi, Aerosmith, AC/DC, and Van Halen. Having recently released the album Psycho Circus, the original members of KISS, Ace Frehley, Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley & Peter Criss were guest on the comedy variety show MAD TV. KISS did not perform any songs, but strangely acted in several sketches. We're back this week to talk about memories of KISS live with Koncert Memories! We know many of you have seen KISS live going all the way back to the glory days of the 70's. However, Aaron and Chris didn't get started until the early 90's. This makes for an interesting discussion as we got into the band at a commercial low-point and got to witness the resurrection of their popularity with the reunion tour in 1996 and all the strange twists and turns that lead us to today.Tours discussed this week include the Hot in the Shade tour, Revenge tour, Bad Boys of KISS tour, Alive Worldwide 96-97 tour, Psycho Circus tour, Farewell tour, World Domination tour, Rock the Nation tour, Alive 35 tour, and End of the Road tour. Additionally, we discuss some Ace Frehley solo shows and notable one-off performances including KISS playing on a floating stage in Nashville in 1994 and the Vinnie Vincent acoustic performance at the 2018 Atlanta KISS Expo.
