Lots to learn on this episode. We learn of NYC Mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani's fledgling rap career before getting into politics. We explore a NY Times article that dives into people falling deep into the ChatGPT rabbit hole, to the point where it greatly affects their lives. "Oh no, work," is introduced into our lexicon. Plus, we learn about Candace Cameron's fear of demons and her possibly closeted son. We close out the show paying tribute to Brian Wilson, Nitzer Ebb's Douglas McCarthy and Sly Stone from Sly and the Family Stone.Watch the episode on Youtube for free. The passing of legendary Nitzer Ebb frontman Douglas J. McCarthy is the only thing we could talk about on this week's podcast. Forgive us if this episode is a bit more scattered than usual; news of McCarthy's passing came out less than an hour before our recording, but we wanted to at least get some of our thoughts about his work and legacy out, as well as personal remembrances.

No Comment. (ENG) Electronic body music is celebrated on February 24th for International EBM Day!Electronic body music (EBM) is a genre of electronic music that combines elements of industrial music and synth-punk with elements of dance music. It developed in the early 1980s in Western Europe, as an outgrowth of both the punk and the industrial music cultures. It combines sequenced repetitive basslines, programmed dance music rhythms, and mostly undistorted vocals and command-like shouts with confrontational or provocative themes. The evolution of the genre reflected "a general shift towards more song-oriented structures in industrial as to a general turn towards the dancefloor by many musicians and genres in the era of post-punk." It was considered a part of the European new wave and post-punk movement and the first style that blended synthesized sounds with an ecstatic style of dancing (e.g. pogo). EBM gained a stable following in the second half of the 1980s. Around that period, a youth-cultural scene emerged from EBM whose followers describe themselves as EBM-heads or (in North America) as rivetheads. The term electronic body music was first used by Ralf Hütter of the German electronic band Kraftwerk in an interview with British music newspaper Sounds in November 1977. In June 1978 Hütter reused the phrase in an interview with WKSU radio (Kent, Ohio) to explain the more physical character of the Kraftwerk album The Man-Machine. Although the term originated in the late 1970s, it was not until the 1980s when it reappeared and started to come into popular use. "EBM stands for 'electronic body music', a term which only really came into use when the Brits and Belgians stepped into the 'sequencer business' with bands like Nitzer Ebb and Front 242. There you could find that sound again, where it was catchily picked up and labelled. In our days all these terms didn't exist, not 'industrial' nor 'post-punk'. [...] To us it was sequencer music, that was what we did." — Jurgen Engler of Die Krupps In 1981, DAF from Germany employed the term "Körpermusik" (body music) to describe their danceable electronic punk sound. The term "EBM" was later used by Belgian band Front 242 in 1984 to describe the music of their EP of that year titled No Comment. (с) wiki
Folge 44 von Tales of Us führt uns mal wieder ins Reich der Musik.
I discuss Nitzer Ebb's 1988 album, Belief.
After splitting from Depeche Mode in 1995, Alan Wilder focused his full attention on Recoil, his side-project going back to the mid-1980s. In 1997, the same year DM released "Ultra," Wilder released the fourth Recoil studio album, "Unsound Methods." Free to explore the electronic soundscape, Wilder enlisted several vocalists to tackle the electronic/trip-hop material, including Douglas McCarthy from Nitzer Ebb and NYC spoken word artist Maggie Estep. The result is both of the time and ahead of its time, fitting in nicely with the mid-90s trip-hop sounds of Massive Attack, Sneaker Pimps, and Portishead, while also foreshadowing the more experimental and cinematic sounds of James Lavelle's Unkle. Code Industry - “Crimes Against The People” from the 2023 self-released album Structure. Formed in 1989 after changing their name from Code Assault, Code Industry were among the few Black artists in the EBM genre during that era. On Juneteenth 2023, they resissued their 1991 EP Structure with lyrics and liner notes by band member Pen Jackson aka E.N. Sevy. Their lyrics calling out racism and hypocrisy still ring true today. On today's Song of the Day, they deliver seething lyrics against an intense industrial sound, calling to mind '80s faves like Skinny Puppy and Nitzer Ebb. Immer gerne wieder. Also um was ging's eigentlich? I Want You (7 inch Version)”.

With Alex dealing with a family emergency, we've asked long-time friend of the site and frequent guest Matt Fanale to co-host this episode of We Have A Technical. There's lots of news to catch up with, from the impressive lineup of Cold Waves Chicago to the Absolution Fest in Tampa to the sale of Bandcamp. She is a one woman army that blends the chaos and balance with a familiar vibe of industrial electronica sound. Her music is a fusion of smooth, cutting edge vocals, surreal guitars, hypnotizing beats and multiple electronic synth elements arising into dark arrangements that, combined with storytelling lyrics, respond to the paranoia of everyday reality. I Ya Toyah spent the majority of 2020 in her studio working on new music, as well as taking part in multiple collaborations including vocal performances with the project Featured by Julian Beeston ( Iron Man, Batman Begins movie sound design, Nitzer Ebb, Cubanate), Tear Down The Walls Tribute to Pink Floyd by Riveting Music, and many more. In March 2020 she released the remix project for the Code Blue album, including the collaboration with Rhys Fulber of Front Line Assembly and Conjure One, Tim Skold, Grendel and more. The measles outbreak continues to grow as new cases are identified. According to the city health department, there have been 466 confirmed cases of measles in Brooklyn and Queens since September, and New York is a major contributor to the nationwide total of 764 cases, the highest number in 25 years. Within the city, Orthodox Jewish communities are hardest hit due to a combination of unvaccinated individuals and travelers returning from Israel, where there has been an outbreak of measles since last year. In the city health department data, Williamsburg has the highest total number of cases, at 379, and has added 31 new cases just in the previous week. The city has also carried through with restrictions outlined in an official health department declaration from last month, closing multiple schools and citing more than 80 individuals for failing to show proof of vaccination or to obtain a new vaccination. Measles is a highly contagious disease that is spread through the air as sick individuals cough or sneeze. The measles vaccination is included in MMR shots, standing for measles, mumps, and rubella, that contain a specially-weakened form of the virus that trains the body's immune system on how to defend against that virus in the future. For information on where to obtain a measles vaccination, call 311 or view information from the Department of Health at nyc.gov/doh. 142 years ago on May 8, 1877 — The first Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show is held in Manhattan 170 years ago on May 10, 1849 — A rivalry between Shakespearean actors fuels the Astor Place Riot at the Astor Opera House 136 years ago on May 12, 1883 — The Brooklyn Grays hold their first baseball game 116 years ago on May 15, 1903 — New York becomes the first state to require vehicle registration numbers 78 years ago on May 15, 1941 — Joe DiMaggio begins what would become his famous 56-game hitting streak City data on DSNY salt usage: In the DSNY data, storms are loosely grouped into numbered storms when road clearing takes place over multiple days. From November 2018 to March 2019, there were eight significant storms that required an average of around 41,000 tons of salt per storm, for a season total of 329,849 tons. A deadly fire at the Frederick E. Samuel Apartments in Harlem claimed the lives of four children and two adults in the early-morning hours of May 8th. In what appears to have been an unfortunate accident, fire marshals found the cause to have been an unattended stove that was left lit. It was unknown whether the stove was being used for cooking, to heat the apartment, or if it was left lit for religious reasons, as was the case in a similar overnight fire in Midwood, Brooklyn in 2015 that killed seven children. Speaking to PIX11, an FDNY source said that the smoke alarm was found disconnected, which could explain why the family was not alerted by the alarm, which was inspected just five months earlier. 42 years ago on May 16, 1977 — A New York Airways helicopter crashes while loading passengers from atop the Pan Am building Planetary Defense Conference in College Park, Maryland simulates a hypothetical asteroid impact on ol' New York City Manhattanhenge Photography Tips and Viewing Locations A Great Big City has been running a 24-hour newsfeed since 2010, but the AGBC News podcast is just getting started, and we need your support.
