Helen Zoe Veit amerikai történész a száz évvel ezelőtti gyermekétkezésről és a modernkori válogatósságról szóló, idén megjelent könyvében azt írja, hogy a gyerekkori válogatósság nem veleszületett vagy elkerülhetetlen jelenség, hanem jelentős részben történelmi, kulturális és társadalmi hatások eredménye. A 19. században az amerikai gyerekek ugyanazokat az ételeket ették, mint a felnőttek: keserű zöldségeket, savanyúságokat, belsőségeket, csípős ételeket és sok más, ma "gyerekbarátnak" nem tartott fogást. Az 1930-as évek előtt a válogatós evés nem létezett fogalomként, még kevésbé a gyermekek identitásának részeként. A korábbi generációk alig vették észre az alkalmankénti étel-visszautasításokat, vagy „szeszélyeknek” tekintették azokat, nem a gyermekkor központi részének, ahogyan ma sem tekintjük a gyerekek fogmosás vagy naptej elutasítására tett kísérleteit identitásuk részének. A külön gyerekmenük, a kifejezetten gyerekeknek gyártott ultra feldolgozott ételek és az ezekhez kapcsolódó marketing azt az elképzelést erősítették meg, hogy a gyerekek természetüknél fogva csak néhány egyszerű ízt kedvelnek (a gyerekmenük kötelező sültkumpli–rántottcsirkéje!). Ráadásul akkora könnyen elérhető kínálat sem létezett a szülők számára alternatívákat felkínálni a vacsorát elutasító gyereknek (az 1960-as évek közepére egy átlagos amerikai szupermarket vásárlója több mint hétezer árucikk közül választhatott, ez több mint kétszerese volt annak, ami húsz évvel korábban volt elérhető, és tízszerese egy 1920-as élelmiszerbolt kínálatának). Anélkül, hogy belecsúsznánk a “régen minden jobb volt” sopánkodásba, arról beszélgetünk, hogyan változott a gyerekek étkezéséhez való viszonyunk, mit tekintünk normálisnak vagy éppen egészségesnek, és hogyan segíthet nekünk a történeti szempont, hogy a jelenben kialakítsuk a saját családi étkezési normáinkat. Nem szeretnénk a válogatós gyerekek szüleit sem hibáztatni, sem a valóban létező szenzoros érzékenységet eltagadni, ehelyett a mai részben azt szeretnénk végiggondolni, hogyan lehet a családi asztal körüli csatározásokat és örömtelivé és élménytelivé tenni az étkezést. Ed infatti, pur manifestando nella sua azione di fondatrice le più belle qualità d'intelligenza e di volere, ella soffrirà con grande coraggio i dolori fisici, e soprattutto le angosce dell'anima (...). Un'ardente preghiera sgorgava allora dalle sue labbra: "Gesù mio! Tu solo mi basti. La mia vita sia crocifissa con Te"». Questo è un passaggio dell'omelia pronunciata da Pio XII il 12 giugno 1954, giorno della canonizzazione di santa Maria Crocifissa Di Rosa (6 novembre 1813 - 15 dicembre 1855), fondatrice delle Ancelle della Carità.Una santa, Maria Crocifissa, che come gli altri suoi "colleghi" in Paradiso prosegue la sua missione per la salvezza delle anime. Il suo nome, infatti, non risplende solo per le virtù dimostrate in vita, ma anche per quanto lei continua a fare post mortem. Basti qui ricordare il fatto che proprio Maria Crocifissa, quasi un secolo dopo la sua morte, è stata scelta da Dio nell'ambito di una delle mariofanie più ricche dell'epoca contemporanea, quella di Maria Rosa Mistica, per fare da guida alla veggente Pierina Gilli (1911-1991), apparendole molte volte dal dicembre 1944 (quando la guarì dalla meningite) in poi, preparandola alle apparizioni della Madonna, offrendole conforto e consigli spirituali. Ricordiamo che la Chiesa non ha ancora affermato l'autenticità di questa mariofania, ma nel luglio 2024 - attraverso il dialogo tra la Diocesi di Brescia e il Dicastero per la Dottrina della Fede - ha riconosciuto l'abbondanza dei frutti spirituali e la bontà dei messaggi legati a Rosa Mistica stessa.Il secondo ciclo di apparizioni (1966) di Rosa Mistica ha un focus particolare sugli ammalati. Un elemento che si lega bene alla vita terrena della santa celebrata oggi, visto che il suo istituto religioso nacque proprio a seguito della carità eroica che Paola Francesca Maria Di Rosa - questo il suo nome secolare completo - dimostrò verso gli ammalati durante l'epidemia di colera che colpì la sua città, Brescia. Correva l'anno 1836. L'epidemia mieteva molte vittime. Il lazzaretto era pieno di malati ed era difficile trovare chi fosse disposto a curarli.LA CHIAMATA DA DIOPaola, di famiglia nobile, si sentì chiamata da Dio ad assistere i colerosi. Si consigliò con il suo confessore, monsignor Faustino Pinzoni. E poi scrisse una lettera al padre, il cavalier Clemente Di Rosa, per chiedergli il permesso di andare nel lazzaretto a curarvi le donne contagiate. La missiva - datata 21 giugno 1836 - iniziava così: «Viva Gesù! Carissimo Papà, sono a pregarvi di una grazia. Ve la chiedo in iscritto, non per mancanza di confidenza a parlarvi; ma perché non mi si chiudan le parole fra le labbra con una vostra pronta negativa. Sì, la grazia che vorrei da voi, ve la chiedo per amor di Gesù Cristo. Deh! non me la negate. Il mio vivissimo desiderio sarebbe d'approfittare del mezzo che Iddio mi dà d'aprirmi il Paradiso col praticare l'atto di carità in assistere all'ospedale le povere colerose. Lasciate che mi dedichi al servizio di queste povere infelici. Voi, fate al Signore il sacrificio della vostra Paolina; io lo farò della mia vita». Qualche riga dopo, la santa aggiungeva: «Non consultate né la carne, né il sangue, ma la Religione sola. Non apporterò alcun danno alla famiglia, perché vi ho riflettuto, e prenderò tutte le misure che la prudenza suggerisce. Di queste ve ne parlerò a viva voce. Caro Papà, accordatemi questa licenza, che mi renderete felice. Vostra affez.ma obbl.ma figlia Paola».Quale fu la risposta del genitore? Prima è opportuna una premessa. A quell'epoca il padre della santa era già vedovo e aveva già subìto la perdita di sei figli su nove (il colera gli avrebbe poi portato via un altro figlio ancora, Filippo, di 27 anni). Comprensibilmente, il cavalier Di Rosa, leggendo quella lettera, tremò. E, in attesa della sua decisione, tremarono (e piansero) non solo i familiari ma anche i domestici, che avevano una sorta di venerazione per Paolina, com'era chiamata la futura santa Maria Crocifissa. Anche il padre si consigliò con mons. Pinzoni, che lo lasciò libero di decidere in un senso o nell'altro, perché «non si tratta - gli disse il sacerdote - di un caso di coscienza, ma di un atto volontario ed eroico». Al culmine del suo dramma interiore, il padre, per amore di Dio e del prossimo, accordò il permesso alla figlia. Così, tre giorni dopo la lettera, all'età di 22 anni, Paola entrò nel lazzaretto. E vi entrò con un'altra nobile, la signora Gabriella Echenos Bornati, che accompagnerà la santa in diverse altre imprese di carità.UNO SPETTACOLO TERRIBILEIl colera infestava non solo Brescia, ma tutta la provincia. Nei due giorni precedenti l'arrivo di Paola al lazzaretto, i morti erano stati rispettivamente 113 (il 22 giugno) e 87 (il 23 giugno). Lo spettacolo che si presentava davanti a lei e Gabriella era terribile, per la varietà di sintomi e i dolori lancinanti causati dal morbo. Le due infermiere volontarie dovevano «asportare tutto ciò che le ammalate emettevano, pulire incessantemente corpi, letti, pavimenti, perché in quella sporcizia si nascondeva la causa del morbo, e i medici l'avevano intuito», scriveva uno dei primi biografi della santa, mons. Luigi Fossati; tra i vari altri compiti, bisognava «coprire e portare via i morti; accogliere le nuove colpite che incessantemente e, ad ondate, entravano».Paola prestava la massima cura a questa opera al servizio dei corpi. Ma al contempo le premeva particolarmente dare un conforto spirituale a quelle ammalate (molte delle quali moribonde), perché voleva che tutte si salvassero l'anima. Perciò si chinava su di loro, ricordava loro - anche alle più ribelli - di essere amate da Dio, trovava parole semplici per aiutarle a morire riconciliate con il Creatore. E quasi sempre riusciva nell'intento, a volte assistendo con commozione a un semplice segno di croce, fatto con le ultime forze.Nonostante il servizio svolto nel lazzaretto, né Paola né Gabriella subirono il contagio. Fin dai primi giorni, inoltre, il loro esempio attrasse altre volontarie. Un bresciano dell'epoca, citato dal Fossati, scriveva: «Ieri chiesi a un coleroso uscito dall'ospedale come fosse stato assistito da quelle pie persone, e col pianto della gratitudine negli occhi mi rispose queste precise parole: "Quelle sante persone non sono del mio mondo, ma sono angeli! Non è possibile immaginare tanta carità. Una nobile signorina di ventidue anni!"», esclamava con ammirazione, riferendosi a Paola.L'esperienza al lazzaretto fu la base per la nascita delle Ancelle. Infatti, Paola iniziò a visitare assiduamente le ammalate all'ospedale di Brescia. Alcune compagne la imitarono. Dopo essersi consigliata con il proprio direttore spirituale, Paola si decise a formare un gruppo stabile di giovani di buona volontà, che affiancassero le infermiere laiche già presenti all'ospedale. Verso la fine di aprile del 1840, con la benedizione del vescovo, la nostra santa iniziò a condurre vita comune con le altre compagne: si trattava del primo nucleo della Pia Unione delle Ancelle della Carità. Il 18 maggio di quello stesso anno, dopo dieci giorni di esercizi spirituali, 32 Ancelle di diversa provenienza iniziarono ufficialmente il loro servizio presso l'ospedale di Brescia. Monsignor Pinzoni assegnò a Paola, che non aveva ancora compiuto 27 anni, l'ufficio di superiora.Furono dunque questi gli inizi delle Ancelle della Carità (erette in congregazione sotto Pio IX), nate dal cuore di una donna bresciana che ha messo la gloria di Dio e i beni eterni al di sopra di tutto.

Marie spricht in dieser Folge von einem Song, der ihr Kraft gibt Haltung zu zeigen und für Mitmenschlichkeit aufzustehen.Im Refrain dieses Songs kommt sehr oft „I won´t do, what you tell me“ vor. Marie ist und war viel auf Demonstrationen und sie glaubt, dass dieser Song ein wahnsinnig guter Protestsong ist, weil er eine klare Grenze zieht, der Song sagt genau hier ist keine Grauzone mehr, sondern macht deutlich was nicht mehr akzeptabel ist. Dabei versprüht der Song eine greifbare Wut, die aber nicht ohnmächtig ist, sondern diese Wut hat etwas Verwandelndes – sie fordert mich auf etwas zu tun – sie aktiviert mich. Dafür ist es wichtig eine Haltung zu haben - sich hinzustellen und keinen Platz zu machen, wenn sich da etwas in Richtung Ungerechtigkeit bewegt. In der nächsten Zeit wird es wichtig sein, gerade für die in der Gesellschaft einzustehen, die nicht im Blick sind, die nicht gesehen und gehört werden – laute Musik, klare Slogans können da helfen. Marie sagt dazu: „das wird kein einfacher Weg, da gibt es viel zu tun aber ich glaube für ein Leben in Frieden und Freiheit sollten wir ganz laut sein und ganz klare Kante zeigen und uns weiterhin in der Gesellschaft einbringen, denn wir sind ein Teil davon. Long ago, before the great lion Aslan bounded onto bookshelves, C. S. Lewis wrote a science fiction novel set on mythological Mars. From there, the sequel carried Dr. Elwin Ransom by angels to the sister planet Venus. And from there … the Ransom/Cosmic/Space Trilogy descended to the dull world of corrupt college boards, inner-ring politics, and a secret technocracy bent on world domination with the aid of mad science and demons and everything. Eighty years after That Hideous Strength, we explore why C. S. Lewis created this earthbound and weird and wonderful pre-political supernatural thriller. The temptations to wield inner rings The Ransom Trilogy really includes all three fantastical genres. It starts with sci-fi, continues to fantasy, ends in supernatural. Stephen would have appreciated knowing this before this book! Because that fact, plus the cover, will affect your expectations. More than the other two, Hideous Strength feels a weird hybrid. For instance, it begins on Earth and feels “grown-up,” even dull. Who is Mark Studdock and Jane? Why do we care about them? And where is Dr. Ransom and the creatures of books 1 and 2? But here Lewis is addressing some deep and personal enemies. One of them is the “inner ring” villain he writes about elsewhere. Call this “the room where it happens,” that seat of power. Right now some conspiracists claim to “expose” secret inner rings. Yet more often they're trying to make new “rings” themselves. This “normal,” subtle threat marks the first real evil of the story. Mark, a social-climbing sociologist, craves to reach this influence. Then he gets there … and discovers it's run by the greater threat. 2. A not-so-N.I.C.E. secular technocracy Enter the National Institute for Co-ordinated Experiments. It's a social movement, an actual autocratic state bent on power. They're all about science, social engineering, efficiency, machines. These theorists take the worst of evil ideologies and mix them up. And for Lewis, this represents the worst corruptions of academia. They destroy natural land like Saruman. Hijack history like IngSoc. And they take over newspapers in plain sight like any petty tyrant. Some have different aims/ideas, such as a truly scary revelation about what exactly has gone wrong with the sterility of the Moon. Others are so poisoned by elitism that they “naturally” fall into evil. That's why we call this a pre-political story. Yes, it's about politics and has overlapping theme, but is about the ideas beneath this. N.I.C.E.'s goal: the subjugation of the human race to macrobes. From here, Lewis finally explains the recurring visions of Jane Studdock (revealing the conspiracy) and a holy resistance order. And, lest there be any doubt, we soon learn the worst threat of all. 3. Devils vs. power to demolish strongholds At last, Dr. Ransom enters the story, leading a small diverse group. He's recruited Christian fellow academics, sure, but also one rather sympathetic skeptic, leading women, and working-class folks. Their enemy is not just flesh and blood, but dark spiritual powers. That's why we call Hideous Strength a true supernatural thriller. Astute readers will discern demonic activity behind the veil. That's no surprise for the author of The Screwtape Letters. Yet the activity is more subtle, in allusion, not overt like Peretti. Ultimately we discern the demons/humans spread their evil ideas in an area Lewis knew very well: the corruption of language. Words, meanings, symbols, translations are vital to this story. And perhaps it's no surprise that the ultimate battle is won not by weapons or even direct intrusions of magic, but by word powers. Clearly the author had in mind a certain Genesis 11 narrative! By the end, one hero utters this divine judgment: “Qui Verbum Dei contempserunt, eis auferetur etiam verbum hominis.” (Kee vehr-boom Deh-ee kon-temp-seh-roont, eh-ees ow-feh-reh-toor eh-tee-ahm vehr-boom ho-mee-nees) Translated: “They that have despised the word of God, from them shall the word of man also be taken away.” These villains “have pulled down Deep Heaven onto their heads.” Holy agents unite from the planets and the past to empower good. Lewis also brings in, quite overtly, his love for medieval cosmology and the planetary influences that are crucial to this universe. And now (with a reread) Stephen has experienced this story with delight like he had hoped, particularly with Lewis's latter head-hopping and fun-poking at the expense of N.I.C.E.'s evildoers. That Hideous Strength ends with startling eucatastrophe and celebration of biblical and based virtues, from cosmic to familial. It's no wonder the story has gained new fans in these similar days. Douglas Wigdor, representing accuser Cassandra Ventura, submitted a letter to Judge Arun Subramanian opposing Sean "Diddy" Combs' request for a gag order in his federal case. Wigdor argued that while Combs seeks to restrict public statements from accusers and their attorneys, his own family and legal team have been vocal in the media. He highlighted public comments from Combs' son, Quincy, and his mother, Janice Combs, as well as statements from Combs' attorney, Marc Agnifilo, who labeled the prosecution as racially motivated.
