From the outset of the COVID pandemic, there have have been calls for attention to the mental health impacts of the crisis. Fears of a 'Tsunami' of psychiatric needs have pushed nations and perhaps the world, to prioritise mental health responses. This creates an opportunity for us to build mental health systems in ways that better respond to multiple pathways to distress, particularly those anchored to social inequalities. This talk presents a model for a political economy of global mental health in a time of COVID, that enables the development of mental health enabling communities (Burgess, 2013; Burgess & Matthias, 2017) at scale. UCL's popular public Lunch Hour Lecture series has been running at UCL since 1942, and showcases the exceptional research work being undertaken across UCL. We are in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic and cannot know quite what effects it will have on physical and mental health. Mankind has suffered pandemics before, for example the ‘Spanish Flu’ pandemic of 1918 - perhaps the worst in modern times. More recently coronaviruses have caused Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome epidemics in Asia and the Middle East. Concern regarding mental health is prominent in the current pandemic and there is already considerable effort being made to measure and mitigate mental disorders. In this lecture I will try and draw some lessons from previous pandemics. I will look specifically at suicide and summarise work from a recent systematic review which highlights anxiety, depression and stress disorders following coronavirus infections. I will also show how modern epidemiological research and social media are helping us monitor mental health relevant outcomes in the population. On the basis of this there are grounds for both optimism and pessimism regarding the future mental health burden of COVID-19. This lecture taps the rich vein of artefacts, artworks and specimens held within the UCL museums to trace the evolution of our knowledge of the cardiovascular system over the last 4,000 years – from heart scarabs designed to cheat the ‘weighing of the heart’ ceremony in the ancient Egyptian afterlife to pioneering open-heart surgery with Dale-Shuster pumps. The aim of this lecture is to bring the history of cardiology to life and highlight the contribution of UCL to cardiovascular medicine. Day: 070 Date: Tuesday, Mar. 10, 2020 Topic: Ask Questions Note from Aimee J.: If you don’t know something, ask. Action: Nothing wrong, with not knowing something. A wise man once told me that the problem isn’t with being ignorant. The problem is doing nothing about it, once you know you are ignorant about something. You have to educate yourself and the way you do that is by asking questions. Ask, ask, and ask some more. Questions are how you learn. Questions are how things improve. Questions are what we need more of today. So ask questions, when you don’t understand. Affirmations: You are Awesome. You are Loved. You are Needed. And most importantly, YOU ARE ENOUGH. Day: 063 Date: Tuesday, Mar. 03, 2020 Topic: A Life Defining Moment or not? Note from Aimee J.: This is your call to make! Action: You’re going to have a lot of moments in your life. It’s up to you whether or not it’s just a moment or if it is a life defining moment. My life defining moment came when I was just sitting at work and made an observation that my sister could do my job. It could have been just a throwaway moment, but in really taking the time to think about it, it changed my perspective on my life. It was a life defining moment, because that is when I realized I was making decisions based on others. That is when I started to take charge back of my own life. That is why reflecting on moments is important. You never know when it could go from a regular moment to a life defining one. Affirmations: You are Awesome. You are Loved. You are Needed. Day: 056 Date: Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2020 Topic: That's the way it has Always Been Done Note from Aimee J.: Beware! “That’s the way it has always been done,” is a dangerous phrase. Action: The moment you hear the phrase, “that’s the way it has always been done,” I want you to challenge the speaker of that phrase. Why has it always been done that way? Take a minute to consider the possibilities of making a change. Are there new advancements that would make things better? What are the pros and cons of making a chance. “That’s the way it has always been done,” is one of the biggest enemies of progress. Whether it is at your job, on a project, or in your life. Don’t let it stand unchallenged. Remember the Five Gorillas Story linked below. You can also Google “Five Gorillas Story” Affirmations: You are Awesome. You are Loved. You are Needed. Date: Tuesday 11 February 2020 Speaker: Tim Newbold - Senior Research Fellow at Centre for Biodiversity and Environment Research, UCL About the lecture: The severe decline of insects has made headlines recently, but it is still unknown exactly why these declines are happening . We have been trying to understand why bumblebees are being lost across many parts of Europe and North America. We use a ‘big data’ approach making use of millions of sightings of bumblebees collected over the last 100 years . We have found that bumblebee losses are linked to both climate change and habitat loss. Predictions for the future paint a worrying picture for bumblebees. We have also been exploring what the changes mean for pollination of important human food crops. Day: 049 Date: Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2020 Note from Aimee J.: I won’t listen if all you’re going to do is yell. Topic: Argue wisely. Action: Why should anyone take you seriously or consider your position, if all you do is yell or use profanity in your defense? Absolutely not. If you do this, off the bat, you have lost your position and respect. If you disagree with someone, it is important to be calm, and discuss it rationally. Lay out your facts and points of contention. That way people will listen to you and consider your perspective. Anything outside of this and you’ve lost before you can even try. Affirmations: You are Awesome. You are Loved. You are Needed. Day: 042 Date: Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2020 Note from Aimee J.: Find people smarter than you and hang around them!! Topic: Smartest Person in the Room Action: It can be very tempting to be the smartest person in the room. But if you are in fact that smartest person in the room, you are in the wrong room. You won’t be able to learn; you be able to grow. You won’t be challenged, because you don’t have someone smarter than you to do so. Find rooms, where you are not the smartest person, and where you can find mentors, peers to hold you accountable. Find the room where you can grow. Affirmations: You are Smart. You are still Growing. Date: Tuesday 30 January 2020 Speaker: Mary Fulbrook Professor of German History in UCL’s School of European Languages, Culture and Society About the lecture: Seventy-five years after the end of the Second World War, the Holocaust continues to challenge us with complex questions and legacies that reach across generations and continents. Focussing on perpetrators as well as victims and survivors, Professor Mary Fulbrook will discuss approaches taken by post-war states, societies and individuals to the persecution of European Jews and other victim groups. The lecture explores the extent to which those responsible were able to evade justice, the reverberations at a personal level within families and communities, and the challenges of memorialisation today. Day: 035 Date: Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2020 Note from Aimee J.: Make someone’s day by being kind in their direction! Topic: Random Acts of Kindness Action: Do something nice for another person in and/or out of your circle without expectation of return. Do it because you would want someone else to be kind to you. Let’s show the world, we can be kind. Don’t just stop at the end of the day. Periodically, I’d love it if you did it every day, do another random act. Remember acts of kindness don’t have to be large and they don’t have to be monetary. Do what you can. I’m sure it will be appreciated, but remember you’re doing it without any expectation of reciprocation or thanks. Affirmations: I believe in YOU. You can do Whatever You Set Your Mind To. Day: 028 Date: Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2020 Note from Aimee J.: Sometimes all of the same things can be bad. Topic: Be Diverse Action: When you are only exposed to one thing, one perspective, one opinion, it can definitely color your thoughts and actions. Without diversity, you are only seeing one side of a story. What you think is right, may be wrong for a different reason you’re not seeing. Only looking at one perspective, makes you blind to other possibilities, some of which may change your mind if you were aware of it. This is true in all aspects of your life. Personal, Professional, Relationships, Entertainment, Science and Technology, Politics, etc. All of it. It is SO important that you listen to multiple sides, before forming an opinion or making a decision. Diversity today is a good thing and more importantly, a necessary one. We explore the amazing scientific discoveries on the nature and development of the Universe. A fascinating process with a very humble and simple origin, where a handful of fundamental building blocks get together following simple rules, but always driven by chaotic initial conditions and sometimes catastrophic events along inconceivable long periods of time. We learn how all life is formed by the same basic chemical structures and how the entire humankind had a common origin; that we all are part of a single human family, living in a fragile paradise. At this point, we confront the tragic contradictions created by our powerful society and feel the need of invoking and learning from ancestral wisdom and prophecies, if humanity is going to survive in the long term. How is it going? I just want to check in because sometimes I think we think that we have to be 100%. That we have to always be on. That we have to be doing well and it's tough. There are some days you just don't want to get out of bed. There are some days where things just aren't going well and you're tired of putting on a face and guys, I want to let you know that's okay. There is nothing wrong with you when you feel that way, it's normal. We all go through that. What I want you to do though is to take care of yourself. When you feel that feeling, when you're going through that moment and those motions recognize that and know that you need to take some self-care. You need some time to do and take self-care. Today is Tuesday, January 13th, 2020 and I just felt like that was important to share with you. It's one of those things I think, you know, especially for me, I've always been a people person, a people pleaser. And being on has been something I do. It's something I am as well. But you know, it's hard sometimes to take away from natural to when you're faking it, right? And there's some days where you're just tired. You just not in the mood. Right? And it's for both sexes, both genders, males, females, boys, girls. We all go through this. This isn't restricted to one over another. And it's for all ages too. Kids have it. Teens have it, young adults, adults, the elderly, we all go through it. So don't deny yourself the fact that it's, it could be happening to you with this very day. And you know, there are things that affect that being stuck in an office or a room with no windows or you don't see sun a lot, right? You're down there all your, you could be there and just be depressed. It can happen. You're like, man, there's just nothing. People aren't energized by that. That's why it's important to go outside. That's important to see and meet other people. That's why it's important to have moments where you just walk away from your current situation and it's important to not be stuck in meetings all day. You need to see the sun, you need to see other folks. So keep that in mind. There are things that can affect how you're doing. It's not always just you, it's circumstances. It's your surroundings. These are all things that play a part on your mental health. That's what it all comes down to you guys. That's why taking self-care is important. When you start to feel poorly, take some time for yourself. Do something that makes you smile. Do something that makes you happy, eat your favorite food. Do any of that to make yourself feel better. But when it all comes down to it, if you need to, I'm telling you, if you need to get professional help, there is no shame in doing that. There is nothing wrong with asking for help. There are plenty of resources out there for you to do that. Mental Health America is one of those resources and it's an organization I support. Um, every year on my birthday, I try to raise money, at least for the past two years. Probably for this year too. We'll see, um, for the work that they do, they do free mental health screenings for people. And one of those tests can help you. Just because you might be feeling something in your head just because you're going through something. Anxiety, depression, bipolar, these are all things that are happening to each of us in different ways, at different times, at different points of our life. That doesn't mean there's anything wrong with you. You are still enough. You are still okay. What's important though is that you get help with it, right? When you cut your arm and it's bleeding, you don't just let it keep bleeding. When you see that there's something wrong, you put a bandaid, you wash it, you take care of it. It's the same thing that goes with your mental health. And when you're not feeling 100%, you gotta take care of yourself. So I wanna make sure you guys understand that. Take care of yourself. I'll put some resources in the description in the show notes, so be sure to check that out if you need to. I just wanted to check in and see how you guys were doing. That's all it is today. How are you doing? It's okay if you're not 100%. Jjust make sure you take some time at some point today to help get you back towards 100% you may not get there by the end of the day, but with some rest and some take care activities, you'll get there, right? Cause you, you're a trooper, you're resilient, you're a fighter and you're just, you're awesome. Each of us is an individual and we'll talk about this later, but you are needed in this world. You are too awesome. You are too loved, you are needed in this world and most importantly guys, as I always tell you, you are enough as you are. No ifs, ands or buts about it. Each of us is unique and each of us is enough the way we are and how we decide we are. All right, so keep that in mind until next time when we check back in, you know, that's tomorrow. Remember, Don't stop, Keep Chasing.

I'm excited now for the first six, six days, uh, I guess we should be doing it today too, of the year we talked about gratitude and three things that we are grateful for it. We're building it as a practice for ourselves. And so, um, in hindsight today should also count. So we're doing it for a week. We should do it today. So what are three things I am grateful for? Cause I would never ask you to do it and not do it myself. Three things I'm grateful for. One, I'm grateful for the first responders in Australia. Guys, if you don't know what's happening. Australia, it's crazy out there. Fires, fires, fires. I think it's raining right now, but this is a lot of damages. A lot of smoke. It's a lot of danger right now. Shout outs to the first responders who are there helping risking their lives to take care and rescue people. God bless you guys. I'm, I'm grateful for that. Cause I do know some people in Australia, thankfully they're safe, but they had family and friends who were not. So if not for them, they wouldn't be out of danger right now. So shout outs. I'm grateful for them. Even if it doesn't have a direct combination to me, I am grateful for that. Number two, I'm grateful for my mom's cooking so she can throw down. It's amazing what she can do. We've, uh, we're, we're trying to do a, we'll see what we can do, what I can convince her to do. But if you're interested in following my mom's culinary skills, check out the Instagram @apinchofkerala and uh, we'll see if, if a lot of people sign up, we'll start doing stuff early. But you know, she's talented, she's good, she's good at not just Indian food. She can throw down for American food too and even like healthy foods. So I am grateful for her for that ability that she has. Number three, what am I grateful for? Um, so you have to think, sometimes you gotta think, Oh, I'm grateful for um, Funkos. I just got a new Funko, I'll share it on the interwebs tomorrow. Um, I just love those things. They are awesome. They made collecting action figures. Cool again, and just my, my childhood is there. I got, I dunno, you know, I think I have like one, two, three, that's just too many Funkos to count, but I am grateful for them and I love it. I love it. They make me smile. They do awesome shout outs to the creators of Funkos. What are three things you guys are grateful for? That's important? Check that for yourself. Answer that question for yourself because your day will be brighter. You're starting off on a positive note. Okay, so do that. We were going to do it together for a week. I don't want you to stop tomorrow. I want you to keep doing this exercise and I'll check in periodically, but this is a positive thing that will help you turn around your mental health and it will turn around your outlook for life and for the day. So do that. The other thing, are affirmations, which we'll talk about in a bit, and then today, what I want to talk to you guys about is the five second rule. We're a week into the new year. How many of you are struggling with your goals, struggling with your goals? It's, it's a common thing. You're not the only ones. I'm sure you've heard percentages of people who give up. There's an increase at the gyms. I'm sure that'll decrease soon it's just human nature for us to quit. It's easy to quit. It's hard to keep going and I want you guys to keep going, so I'm going to help you. I'm going to help you. I'm going to talk to you guys today about something I think a brilliant woman has done. Uh, Mel Robbins. She is now a talk show host. She is a motivational speaker. She's phenomenal. She wrote a book. She's a writer too. It's called the 5 Second Rule and it's easy to do. What it does is it helps you with your goals and it helps you with moving forward when you're stuck. And so the idea is, if my goal is say to go to the gym, because that's the easiest one, right? I want to go swimming. And I'm like, ah, my instinct is to go to the gym. I have this feeling I want to go to the gym, but I don't. But the moment I have that instinct, what Mel Robbins says to do is count to five within five seconds, you need to move and go to the gym or else you're not gonna do it. Your brain is going to shut that thing down. Think about that. Every time you have an instinct to do something towards your goal, your brain is shutting it down. After five seconds, you have this gap, this time period for you to accomplish what you need to do. But if you don't do it within that time period, it's gone. Right? So within five seconds, I have the instinct to go swimming. I need to go 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, and get up and I need to go. Cause if I don't get up, make an action, a move towards my goal of swimming, getting up, going, get it ready. You know, whatever the case is, I won't do it. Right? So what I want you to do is, and Mel has a post and I'm going to link to it in the show notes for those who are on the podcast. Alexa, folks, go to your personalhypeman.com and find this episode. The notes will be there. There are five parts to this one. You have to have, you have to have an instinct. You want to do something, but right. There's a moment or a feeling for you to do something. And so that's, that's one part. The second is it's tied to something. Mine was a goal to go swimming, right? Yours could be anything, right? But it's tied to something specific that you were trying to do, a purpose that you're trying to do. And so the next one is that you have to push yourself within those five seconds to do it. It's not magic. I say one, two, three, - 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, and you do it. You have to within yourself, push yourself to do it. If you don't, it's not going to happen automatically saying the magic words, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, Go will not make it happen. It's 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, Go and you go as soon as it hits. Otherwise you're not doing it. You're not doing it. And she says, you know, the last one is you actually have to physically make a difference. Make a move towards what you're trying to do. Picking up a piece of paper writing. You know, if it's writing a book, it could have been just like picking up the pen, getting in front of your computer, that kind of thing. So think about that as you guys are working on your goals. If you've already had a setback, if you've, you've already fallen off the wagon. Whatever the case is, it is not too late. It's never, never too late for you to get back up. Okay? All you have to do, take Mel's advice. Count 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, Go and do it. And do it. It has worked for so many people and she talks about, and again it's in the, it's in the blog post, you guys can read about it. It's tied to, it's tied to science, it's tied to science and is something that is neurological and it is within the brain about you doing it. And she talks about actually the science of it and the rules of why it is this way. And so check that out, but you can beat it. 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, Go. All right. That's all you have to do. So I want you to do that today. There's something you're struggling with. I don't want to go, I don't want to type, I don't want to, I don't want to first stop saying I don't wanna but if you're going to say it 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, and then do it, do not hesitate, then you have to do it. Okay. That will help you. Yeah. Not a guarantee. You're more likely to do it, but you got this. All right, you got this. We're a week into the new year guys. We're a week into the new year and here you are listening to this podcast one, you're so supportive. You are so supportive of people. Look at you supporting me. That's fantastic. I appreciate it. You've already put a smile on my face. You are a kind person. You are awesome. You are loved. You are needed. And as I keep reminding you, you are more than enough. As you are who you are the way you are. There are no ifs, ands, or buts about it. You are enough, alright? So till next time, tomorrow when we tune in again to have this chat, guys, remember, Don't Stop,Keep Chasing.

Date: Tuesday 26 November 2019 Speaker: Domaniç Lavery Royal Academy of Engineering Research Fellow at Optical Networks Group, UCL About the lecture: Have you ever tried to sing, or play music, with a friend whilst on the phone? It’s surprisingly difficult to stay in time. If your friend is on the other side of the world, then this becomes basically impossible. Fundamental physics, the design of our digital infrastructure, and a smattering of human nature are what give rise to this and many other unusual communications phenomena. This lecture discusses the challenges of all three when trying to create a better Internet. Date: Tuesday 03 December 2019 Speakers: Alexandra Burton Early Career Researcher at Division of Psychiatry, UCL Kartikeya Tripathi Lecturer at Jill Dando Institute of Security and Crime Science, UCL About the lecture: Alexandra Burton and Kartikeya Tripathi will present findings from a cross-departmental research programme (Division of Psychiatry and Security and Crime Science), exploring challenges of ageing in a globalised world. They will explore how migration and digitalisation affect older people’s needs for support and care, through the prisms of two of our recent research studies: with older victims of cybercrime in Mumbai (Kartikeya); and South Asian carers of people with dementia in England (Burton). They will discuss how we can build on our qualitative research findings and existing manualised interventions #MadeAtUCL to develop culturally competent care interventions. Date: Tuesday 19 November 2019 Speakers: Andrew MacLachlan Teaching Fellow at Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis (CASA), UCL About the lecture: Urban areas are expected to triple by 2030 to accommodate 60% of the global population. Anthropogenic landscape modifications expand coverage of impervious surfaces inducing the Urban Heat Island effect; a critical 21st century challenge associated with increased economic expenditure, energy consumption and adverse health impacts. Yet omission of UHI measures from global climate models and planning guidance precludes effective sustainable development. We present a data-driven planning process for urban monitoring and heat mitigation that will enhance the future sustainability of our cities to align with current global development agendas. The schools system in England is largely comprehensive yet significant gaps in student attainment remain predicated on factors such as social background and ethnicity. One potential explanation for this is 'within-school tracking', or setting and streaming. The 'Best Practice in Grouping Students' study sheds new light on the impact of setting by 'ability' on pupil self-confidence and attainment, and how it exacerbates social inequality. It explores why equitable practice in grouping pupils is difficult for schools. In this lecture Prof. Becky Francis will outline the study’s key findings and share recommendations to promote socially-just and effective grouping practice. Date: Tuesday 15 October 2019 Speaker: Professor Becky Francis is Director of the UCL Institute of Education (IOE). UCL's popular public Lunch Hour Lecture series has been running at UCL since 1942, and showcases the exceptional research work being undertaken across UCL. Lectures are free and open to all.
