In this very special episode, Dr.’s Marvin and Raymond Dunn revisit some of the historic civil rights events that took place in St. Augustine, Florida. Our special “Through Black Eyes: Unfiltered” guests are Mr. Sam Wilkinson and Mr. James Williams, who were teenagers at the time of their involvement, and who participated in some of the events and were arrested as a result their quest for change. Mr. Wilkinson and Mr. Williams tell why Dr. Martin Luther King used black children and black college students, in place of adults, to call attention to the injustices practiced in St. Augustine. Their stories of how they were involved in wade-ins, student marches, and chased and beaten by the KKK, gives a unique view “through their eyes” of how just how dangerous those events were then and still are now. This St. Augustine episode also includes the story a motel manager pouring acid in the pool to make blacks get out and how Dr. King convinced numerous white ministers to come to his aid. I loved every second of talking to Sam and Bridger. At first, I was a little scared for this episode. I figured there are a lot of med student podcasts and let alone med students in the world today. So what made these two so special? I found out during the interview, It is not what they do that makes them special, It is who they are. These two are people who recognize the smallest and largest miracles in life such as Birth or Heart Surgery. Bridger was inspired to do this at a very young age Watching his younger brother get glass removed from his back. Sam was inspired because of personal loss. These two are both smart, kind, creative, and special Individuals. These guys taught me that even the most accomplished put in the work when nobody is watching.  People listening at home, I am just glad I got to talk to both of them. The five-piece indie-rock band is comprised of an all-star cast, also featuring members of Dollar Bar, Miners, and Weak Boys. Their debut album 'Tranceplanetsugarmouth' came out in November 2016, through Brisbane indie label, Coolin' By Sound, and has received stellar reviews from Rolling Stone, Amateur Hour, and 4ZZZ. Filled with Australian drawl and lo-fi psych rock, Shrapnel are very quickly tearing their way up the food chain, and garnering attention in all the right places. Recorded at The Bearded Lady in Brisbane on the 21st of January, 2017. Recorded by Sam Lowe & mixed by Branko Cosic. Agency: Fresh outta Canberra, Agency are a 4 piece comprised of a smattering of players from other CBR bands, featuring ex (and current) members of Hoodlum Shouts, Spartak and A Drone Coda. Guitarist Shoeb Ahmad also runs the band’s record label 'HellosQuare Recordings', adding another hat to his metaphorical millinery store. They released their debut album ‘The Stillness Of Speed’ in late 2015, which is filled with spiky, bass led noise rock, and just a touch of experimental rumble. In 2016, they released two EP’s through two different record label’s; Do We Go It Alone? in May on Tenzenmen and I Know I’m In Flames in July through Sonic Masala. Recorded at the Greenslopes Bowls Club as part of Sonic Masala Fest in Brisbane on the 13th of August, 2016. Recorded & mixed by Branko Cosic. This podcast features a presentation by Dr Sam Wilkinson (Department of Philosophy, Durham University) on ‘Explanation and explanatory power in psychiatry: The case of voice-hearing’ (Thursday 11 February 2016, 5 pm – 7 pm) Abstract: What is it to provide an explanation of something? In this seminar, Sam will explore different accounts of what an explanation is, and present his own preferred account, which he calls interrogative pragmatism. Against the backdrop of this account of explanation, Sam will elaborate an account of what makes something not merely an explanation, but also a more powerful explanation than a potential competitor. In other words, he will give an account of explanatory power. Finally, Sam will apply this to psychiatry in general, and voice hearing in particular, and illustrate instances of some explanations being more powerful than others.

Shrapnel: Shrapnel is the solo synth pop project of Sydney-sider Sam Wilkinson, perhaps better known for his involvement in bands such as: Day Ravies, King Tears Mortuary and Mope City. ‘Tobacco Dreams’ is his debut release on Tenth Court records, a bedroom-pop album that does a fine job showing that Sam is one of those multi-talented kind of guys that’s helping further blur the line of song-writer and producer. Recorded & mixed by Dusty Anastassiou. Recorded at 107 Projects, Sydney. 19 July 2014. Orion: Comprising of members of the equally dearly departed Whores and Oily Boys, Orion take up the quieter, more melodic moments hinted on that latter band’s debut EP, Majesty. They sit somewhere between the arty post punk of Naked on The Vague and the slightly less arty post punk of Constant Mongrel. In fact, some songs have an almost Orange Juice kind of suave. Recorded & mixed by Dusty Anastassiou. Recorded at 107 Projects, Sydney. 19 July 2014. Airing details: Originally via Zed Digital, 8-9pm, Friday 26 September 2014.
