This is undoubtedly one of our most powerful conversations on 115 Miles. We hope you're sitting comfortably...and we know we always say this, but...it's about to get uncomfortable. We are joined by our good friend and CEO of Power The Fight, Ben Lindsay, to have a deep discussion about race, racism and our relationship with it in the UK. Our conversation responded to the news in the last few days about the naming of another suspect in the murder of Stephen Lawrence and of yet another tragic death of a child yards away from the charity's office. We explore the heaviness and trauma that communities feel in these moments, why the media paints it as a black people only problem (and why it's definitely not) and we confront our own conscious and unconscious prejudices as a white majority society. Ben brings knowledge, wisdom and grace having been doing this work for over two decades and we were privileged and honoured to have him join us as our co-host. Ben is CEO of Power The Fight, a charity dedicated to empowering communities to end youth violence. He is also a keynote speaker, published author of a best selling book, as well as currently doing his PHD at Durham University. Find out more about Ben and the team's incredible work at www.powerthefight.org.uk.

Ben Lindsay, Guvna B and Lord Hastings explore what it means to be a ‘father’ and share their experience of fatherhood. Although the biblical language of God as Father can be difficult for some, the idea it presents of a God with an unconditional love for all his children is a powerful one. How do we raise children in light of the murder of George Floyd in America and the subsequent protests and discussions about racism? Ben Lindsay, a Pastor in London, who also runs a charity which works to prevent knife crime will lead the service, and will lead a dialogue around what fatherhood is and hopes for the next generation, especially around fighting against injustice and racism . Guvna B, an award winning grime artist will reflect on losing his father two years ago and becoming a father himself, and Lord Hastings will share his experience of becoming a father figure to young men in prison through his prison ministry. Not everything we do will succeed. In fact, more often than not, we will experience what most call "failure" or "adversity." The challenge when this comes is to push on, learn the lessons afforded by the situation at hand and, well, shape your world consequently. Ben Lindsay of STAND has learned these lessons and is here to tell his story. It would do all of us well to hear what he has to say. Episode 91 is an interview and discussion Ben Lindsay, founder of the company Solushin. Ben was an athlete who suffered from shin splints and wasn’t impressed by available ways of dealing with them. So, in conjunction with other athletes he developed system to deal with shin splints. I know for myself, in my early days of running I got shin splints that I ignored, mainly because I didn’t know what they were! I continued ignoring them until they turned into stress fractures!! I think we all make silly mistakes when we are new runners! Knowledge is power, and the more we know about the different injuries runners can sustain, and the more we know about the available treatments, the better off we will be. I hope this podcast offers you some insights into how to avoid or treat this injury. If you are like the majority of runners, you may feel like you are constantly beset with niggles (a euphemism for injuries!!) that take away from your joy of running. You may even have sore shins!! So, if you’re sick of niggles, come in and see the specialists at Health and High Performance where they utilise the latest in technology, and experience, to help you get back to your running best. In the wake of the killing of George Floyd, many of my friends gave me reading recommendations. The book I want to talk about today is one of those. Why this book? I picked this book amongst the many recommended partly because it's about the British black experience. I am also reading a book called "Reconstructing the Gospel: Finding freedom from slaveholder religion" by Jonathan Wilson-Hartsgrove. It is a fascinating and deeply moving book about the consequences of slavery in United States. I will record a review of that book in due course. Understanding the black American perspective is helpful, but I felt the need for a British perspective on the British experience. Hence I prioritised Ben Lindsay's book. What Is the book about? In Ben's own words from the introduction: "Christians should be both angry about racial discrimination, particularly in the UK Church, and courageous in wanting to change the situation. I’m hopeful that the UK Church can truly represent the glorious picture painted in Revelation 7.9, where ‘every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages’ will worship Jesus. For that to happen, the UK Church will need to examine itself; it will need ‘to move into the river of the black experience’. We need to open the discussion and start talking about the black experience within a church context. The Church has been silent for too long on the issue of racism. We need to talk about race." Lindsay, Ben; Lindsay, Ben. We Need To Talk About Race (p. 21). SPCK. Kindle Edition. The book contains helpful teaching about experience, history and scripture. All of this is valuable, and I will go on to speak about it more in a moment, but perhaps the most significant aspect of the book is the fact that it courageously addresses an issue which is so poorly understood by people like myself. An overview of the book In most of these recordings I take us through a book step-by-step. However, with this one, I would prefer to talk about it's overall effect on me. Because, whilst I learn some very interesting and helpful specific lessons regarding scripture, history and experience, my main reason for picking up the book was to enter a world somewhat alien to myself. Ben's writing does this for me. I will never fully grasp the black British experience, but I can listen. Reading is a form of listening. Listening with the opportunity to reflect and change. In today's recording I will include some quotes from the book and more extended thoughts. As far as this blog is concerned I will restrict myself to Giving you these key points which stood out to me from the book. Diversity is not the goal, inclusivity is. Inclusivity is not assimilation. Distinction and difference can be celebrated without becoming something which divides. I have heard stories of racism in the past and listened sympathetically. I have been interested to hear them, and, of course, appalled at the pain inflicted on my friends. However, I feel the need more now to not simply receive those stories, but seek them out. The book has had a profound effect on the way that I think about race. To be honest, in many ways, I'm still processing it. What does it mean for me? What does it mean for my local congregation? What does it mean with the way I engage with people from a different race in my church, but also in my community? I hope my behaviour will grow in Christ-likeness in these areas, and I expect that what I'm learning now is but the beginnings of a lifetime of learning. I pray and hope my heart and mind will remain open. I conclude with one more quote from Ben: "As Christians, we are to model the sacrificial, inclusive, impartial, humble approach of Jesus and be intentional in crossing the racial divides in our communities." page 151 Your thoughts...please? Have you read this book? Have you read other books on race and Christianity? I'd be grateful if you could recommend more books to me, but also why do you think they are significant. Interview with Ben Lindsay by Nicky Gumbel. ‘Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed’ Isaiah 1:16-17 Ben Lindsay shares with us his story of finding faith, how he founded ‘Power The Fight’, a charity that empowers communities to end youth violence, and talks about how as a Church we can be the voices that stand up. The post Interview with Ben Lindsay appeared first on St Mary's East Molesey.
Looking at Ben Lindsay's talk from Friday evening, tonight's offering from Jo Saxton, and Jill Duff's morning Bible teaching on Nehemiah.
In Episode 16 we are chatting with Elim’s national leader Chris Cartwright. Chris introduces himself, his wife Annie and his three grown-up children and briefly outlines his journey in faith and ministry, up to his current role as the General Superintendent of the Elim Pentecostal movement worldwide. We ask the million-dollar question: how can really busy blokes manage all the different priorities they are confronted by? We all get pushed into an extraordinary level of ‘busyness’, but we mustn’t beat ourselves up about that! Chris shares that he has been slowly working his way through the Ruthless Elimination of Hurry by John Mark Comer, along with a couple of really helpful principles for really busy blokes: First is to try and avoid carrying things that can’t be dealt with today, but ask instead for wisdom, courage and energy at the time it is necessary to deal with those things. Second is to become familiar with those things that energise us – whether it be worship, exercise, or being around nature (for example). Lockdown has allowed some adjustments to the usual crazy pace, and an opportunity to re-evaluate some of our rhythms – and we mustn’t lose sight of what God has been saying to us in this time. We explore a concept from Stuart Keir of Audacious Church about the difference between a load (Isaac carrying sticks up the hill, and able to put it down) and a burden (Abraham carrying an instruction up the hill, and unable to put it down), and how Chris deals with the continual weight of leadership burden. He explains that he is making this more of a journey and a connection with God versus a set formula, by opening up to God honestly about concerns and issues, and asking for help and patience. Many things that seem pressing can be allowed some time before they get tackled – and we can ask for God’s help with these. We sometimes give unwarranted attention to things that drain us – so by making our prayers really practical, it allows God to step in. Chris also observes that the load can and does build up over time, too – and it can creep up on us in a subtle way. Chris talks about his love of Paul’s letters to Timothy, and the vulnerable honesty with which Paul shares his heart, mind and disappointments, especially in 2 Timothy 4. Christ also shares his love of reading, and at present is working his way through Scattered Servants by Alan Scott, We Need To Talk About Race by Ben Lindsay and Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell. Gladwell attributes success not only to innate ability and hard work but also ‘outrageous opportunity’. Before closing in prayer for blokes listening, we play ‘Spin the Wheel’ and it turns up ‘car’ and also ‘journey’. Chris reveals that he wouldn’t mind owning an Aston Martin (wouldn’t we all!) and he also shares a staggering testimony from a 2009 trip to the west coast of America and Hawaii. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/elim-mpower/message

It's time for the Church to start talking about race, says Ben Lindsay, a Pastor at Emmanuel Church, in south London and CEO and founder of Power the Fight, a charity that empowers communities to end youth violence. From the UK Church's complicity in the transatlantic slave trade to the whitewashing of Christianity throughout history, the Church has a lot to answer for when it comes to race relations, he says. His book, We Need to Talk About Race, is published on 18 July by SPCK. The Archbishop of Canterbury says that it is “a must-read for the UK Church”. Ben Lindsay will be speaking about the book at a free event at St Paul's Cathedral on 29 October. Madeleine Davies interviewed Ben Lindsay about the book in a café in south London.
