The Locked up Living Podcast
David Potter; Creating a Safe Space for those who have comitted Sexual Offences

The Locked up Living Podcast

Summary Labels can stick to people for life and seriously restrict  their opportunities for change, improvement and reparation. Those who are sentenced for committing sexual offences will find themselves the most despised in society, the target for everyone's hatred and scorn. Unable to get employment or accommodation. Yet how are they to move on from their terrible acts? The Safer Living Foundation is a charity that provides support for individuals with sexual convictions or problematic sexual behaviors. They offer circles of support and accountability, where volunteers meet with individuals who have been convicted of sexual offenses to provide support and help with reintegration into society. The foundation also runs the Safer Living Centre, which offers a safe space for individuals with sexual convictions to receive support and assistance. The center provides a range of services, including prevention programs for individuals concerned about their sexual thoughts or behaviors. The foundation faces challenges in keeping the location of the center confidential and managing public perception of individuals with sexual convictions. Dave Potter discusses the impact and activities of the Safer Living Foundation, a charity that works with individuals who have committed sexual offenses. He highlights the need for support and rehabilitation rather than punishment, and emphasizes the importance of treating these individuals with dignity and respect. The charity offers various projects and activities, including cooking sessions, discussion groups, games clubs, mindfulness sessions, art classes, and more. The aim is to help individuals develop life skills, improve self-esteem, and reintegrate into society. The Safer Living Foundation has had a significant impact on reducing recidivism rates for sexual offenses. However, there is still a stigma associated with this work, and the media often perpetuates negative stereotypes. Dave emphasizes the need for society to change its perception and provide support for individuals with sexual convictions. He also discusses the challenges faced by staff in maintaining a compassionate approach and the importance of self-care.

Today on the show we have Dave Potter. Dave is a retired psychotherapist, and he specialises in anxiety, stress, and trauma. He created his side project, Palouse Mindfulness, when he was a working therapist, as a way to share a particular meditation practice that has changed his life, called Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction.MBSR, it's a meditation therapy, originally designed for stress management, and it is used now for treating illnesses including depression, anxiety, chronic pain, cancer, diabetes and immune disorders.Dave Potter had been interested in meditation since the 70s, and received his training as a MBSR instructor while he was a therapist, through University of Massachusetts Medical School - which was actually where Jon Kabat-Zinn, the founder of MBSR, founded the Center for Mindfulness and began MBSR. MBSR is a life-changing course, but if done in person - like all courses it can be expensive. Dave wanted to create a free version of this life-changing course - to bring the lessons to everyone who needs it. Single-handedly he leant on his previous experience in software, to create the Palouse Mindfulness website. The result is a true labour of love. He has personally recorded meditation sessions, curated online teaching content, and painstakingly written up exercises and built the website - all for free - all so people who need it most can access the benefits of MBSR through a free self-paced course. It has helped thousands. Dave is an incredible person, and I was moved by this conversation. We talk about why people procrastinate with meditation, the benefits of starting something on the side, altruism, dealing with difficult situations and why meditation is as important as sleep.Check out Palouse Mindfulness here.Sign up to the Out of Hours Substack newsletter here See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Among all of this are the phones, computers, tablets and televisions that we throw away. The raw materials of the discarded electronics are estimated to be worth nearly $65 billion due to the gold, silver, copper, platinum and palladium within the products. But only 8.9 million tonnes were collected and recycled, while most wound up in landfills. Many of these devices contain confidential corporate and personal information.
