FAN MAIL--We would love YOUR feedback--Send us a Text MessageApril 9th marks 160 years since the surrender at Appomattox Courthouse – the moment that effectively ended America's bloodiest conflict. This anniversary offers a powerful opportunity to reflect on the Civil War's enduring impact on our national identity and democratic principles. The surrender scene itself carries deep symbolism: Lee in his pristine gray uniform meeting Grant in his characteristically muddy field attire, negotiating terms in a small Virginia parlor. What followed wasn't vengeance but surprising generosity – Confederate soldiers allowed to return home under parole, keeping their sidearms and horses, embodying Lincoln's vision for national healing "with malice toward none, with charity for all."But understanding Appomattox requires grasping the full arc of the Civil War. That's why I've curated three essential books that offer fresh perspectives on this pivotal historical moment. James McPherson's "Battle Cry of Freedom" provides the definitive single-volume account, weaving military strategy and social transformation into a compelling narrative that firmly establishes slavery as the war's central cause. Fergus Bordwitch's "Congress at War" illuminates how Radical Republicans in Congress pushed an aggressive legislative agenda that permanently altered federal-state relationships and protected civil rights. And Edward Bonekemper's "Lincoln and Grant" examines how these two underestimated "Westerners" formed an unstoppable partnership of moral vision and military tenacity. As we approach America's 250th anniversary in 2026, these readings help us comprehend how the Civil War fundamentally redefined our nation. The conflict wasn't just about preserving the Union – it transformed America's understanding of liberty itself, creating a constitutional framework that finally began aligning our practices with our founding ideals of equality. Pick up one of these books today and discover how this crucial chapter in our past continues to shape America's present and future.Key Points from the Episode:• Battle Cry of Freedom by James McPherson - Pulitzer Prize-winning comprehensive history that weaves military, political and social dimensions into one gripping narrative• McPherson clearly establishes slavery as the central cause of the Civil War, not simply "states' rights"• Lincoln's evolving definition of liberty shows how the war transformed American identity• Congress at War by Fergus Bordwitch - Reveals how lawmakers drove anti-slavery legislation even beyond Lincoln's initial vision• With Southerners absent, Congress embarked on transformative legislation that laid foundations for modern America• The book highlights how Congress profoundly altered federal-state relationships and protected civil rights• Lincoln and Grant by Edward Bonekemper - Examines the partnership between two "Western" leaders who brought the Confederacy to its knees• Grant's Vicksburg campaign stands as a masterpiece of military strategy• Their collaboration demonstrates how visionary leadership paired with relentless execution changed history• The Impending Crisis by David Potter (honorable mention) - Brilliant analysis of the tense pre-war years from 1848-1861As we approach America's 250th anniversary in 2026, I encourage you to pick up one of these essential reads to understand this critical chapter in our national story.Other resources: Want to leave a review? Summary Labels can stick to people for life and seriously restrict  their opportunities for change, improvement and reparation. Those who are sentenced for committing sexual offences will find themselves the most despised in society, the target for everyone's hatred and scorn. Unable to get employment or accommodation. Yet how are they to move on from their terrible acts? The Safer Living Foundation is a charity that provides support for individuals with sexual convictions or problematic sexual behaviors. They offer circles of support and accountability, where volunteers meet with individuals who have been convicted of sexual offenses to provide support and help with reintegration into society. The foundation also runs the Safer Living Centre, which offers a safe space for individuals with sexual convictions to receive support and assistance. The center provides a range of services, including prevention programs for individuals concerned about their sexual thoughts or behaviors. The foundation faces challenges in keeping the location of the center confidential and managing public perception of individuals with sexual convictions. Dave Potter discusses the impact and activities of the Safer Living Foundation, a charity that works with individuals who have committed sexual offenses. He highlights the need for support and rehabilitation rather than punishment, and emphasizes the importance of treating these individuals with dignity and respect. The charity offers various projects and activities, including cooking sessions, discussion groups, games clubs, mindfulness sessions, art classes, and more. The aim is to help individuals develop life skills, improve self-esteem, and reintegrate into society. The Safer Living Foundation has had a significant impact on reducing recidivism rates for sexual offenses. However, there is still a stigma associated with this work, and the media often perpetuates negative stereotypes. Dave emphasizes the need for society to change its perception and provide support for individuals with sexual convictions. He also discusses the challenges faced by staff in maintaining a compassionate approach and the importance of self-care.

Historically Thinking: Conversations about historical knowledge and how we achieve it

In 1177 BC a series of very unfortunate events culminated in the collapse of numerous kingdoms centered upon the western Mediterranean. The nature of those events, and how one played upon the other, was the topic of our conversation with Eric Cline way back in Episode 62, when we talked about his book 1177 BC: The Year Civilization Collapsed.  Now Eric Cline is back on the podcast to answer one of the great questions, “and then what happened?”  That is also the task of his most recent book After 1177 BC: The Survival of Civilizations. We shall talk about those who survived, those who didn't, and why–and, for those of you who like rating Presidents and baseball players, we'll discuss the winners, the losers, and those who came out sort of even. Finally we'll even talk about whether there is ever such a thing as a "dark age". Eric H. Cline is professor of classics and anthropology at George Washington University. His most recent book is 1177 B.C.: A Graphic History of the Year Civilization Collapsed. For Further Investigation The website of Erich H. See conversations with Ed Watts, first on the fall of the Roman Republic in Episode 93; and then again on the "eternal fall" of Rome, in Episode 219. In Episode 224 I talked with David Potter about historical disruption, that moment when it feels as if a civilization is going over a waterfall.

Historically Thinking: Conversations about historical knowledge and how we achieve it

By the reign of Marcus Arelius, Rome seems to be unquestioned in its reach of its power, its wealth, and its cultural and intellectual sophistication. The Pax Romana stretched from Britain and Portugal to Syria and Egypt. Yet at the moment of its seemingly greatest achievements, Rome was struck by a disease that annihilated its legions and ravaged its cities. This was the Antonine plague, perhaps history's first pandemic. Its origins and its diagnosis remain a mystery. But my guest Colin Elliott argues that it was both the cause and effect of the empire's decline, a disease which both exposed the crumbling foundations of the empire and then accelerated that crumbling. Colin Elliott is Associate Professor of History at Indiana University. His most recent book is Pox Romana: The Plague that Shook the Roman World, and it is the subject of our conversation today. For Further Investigation Colin Elliot's podcast is The Pax Romana Podcast If you've missed it, go back and listen to Tom Holland explain how The Romans Were Not Like Us in Episode 335 This podcast loves a good pandemic, so long as it is at a great historical distance. We've talked about the immediate consequences of the Black Death with Professor Mark Bailey in Episode 207, and the long term consequences of the Black Death with Jamie Belich in Episode 275 For more on historical disaster, see the conversation with David Potter on disruption in Episode 224

The Great Coaches: Leadership & Life

Our Great Coach on this episode is the legendary Celtic Football Club coach Jock Stein. Jock was a Scottish football player and manager. As a player he also represented Celtic, and was part of their side that won the Scottish league and Scottish Cup double in 1954. He retired in 1957 and began his career as a Coach, or as said in Football a Manager, in 1960. In 1965 he returned to Celtic as manager and over 13 years led them to ten Scottish league championships including 9 in succession, eight Scottish Cups and six Scottish League Cups. However, he is most famous as the first manager of any side from Great Britain to win the European Cup, with Celtic in 1967. He then went on to manage the Scottish national team from 1978 until his death in 1985. Unfortunately, Jock Stein died on the pitch on September 10th 1985. Scotland were playing Wales in a World Cup qualifier and with the score 1-1, Jock collapsed on the sidelines and was pronounced dead soon afterwards in the stadiums medical room. There is not a lot of recorded footage of Jock, and in what there is he does not talk a lot about himself. But in this podcast, we have tried to recreate an interview with Jock about his coaching and leadership style using his own words as read by an actor. About this episode:  There are some sixteen accounts about the life of the President of the Confederacy. Unlike his counterpart, Abraham Lincoln, this President, from the perspective of most historians, has not fared well.  Brittle, ill-tempered, one who held grudges, possessed poor political skills.  In short, a second-rate leader who loved bureaucracy and was unable to grow with responsibility.  When asked why the Confederacy lost the war, Southern-born David Potter, a professor of history at both Yale and Stanford Universities, commented that this Chief Executive should shoulder much of the blame.  Writing some two decades ago, another historian and biographer, William Cooper, Jr., wrote that we should look at a man from his time and not condemn him for not being a man of our time.  Though that seems to fly in the face of current sensitivities and agendas, that is what we, now, shall attempt to do. This is the story of a man, like Robert E. Lee, who is a marquee figurehead for a short-lived nation whose Constitution supported states' rights and slavery.  A man subjected to the bolts of lightning flung his way for being its elected leader.  This is the story of the first and only President of the Confederate States of America, Jefferson F. Davis.     ----more----   Some Characters Mentioned In This Episode: Joseph Davis Franklin Pierce Howell Cobb William L. “Jock Stein changed the world for Celtic!” When asked to consider a Celtic without Jock Stein as manager Matt Corr gave the above answer, summing up just how crucial the great man's return to the club would be in early 1965. Matt is editor of “The Celtic Rising – 1965: The Year Jock Stein Changed Everything”, a new book written by renowned Celtic author David Potter. Covering the calendar year of 1965 the story begins in January of that year with a Celtic side struggling to reclaim former glories under club legend and then manager Jimmy McGrory. Captain Billy McNeill, goal machine Bobby Lennox and young winger Jimmy Johnstone have become disillusioned in a side who haven't claimed a major trophy since a famous 7-1 League Cup win over bitter rivals Rangers in 1957 and are considering their future's in Glasgow's East End. However, by the end of the month, news has begun to filter through that the main who retired as a Celtic player just before that league cup success in '57 would be making his way back to Celtic Park – this time as manager. A move that would changed the history of Celtic Football Club forever. We spent some time with Matt this week ahead of the book's launch as he talked us through some of the key events of that year and of the massive impact they would go on to have on the club. The book is a very welcome addition to the world of Celtic literature as David Potter once again captures the emotions of the time with his first hand account of following the club during that eventful era. A tale that will not only appeal to the supporters of the day but for all who followed and for all who want to know what led to what we now recognise as the modern day Celtic. Without Jock Stein, none of it is possible. There are literally dozens of books telling of the events of Lisbon in 1967 – and rightfully so – but this book fills a gap with the incredible story of the two years leading up to that historical day, as Jock Stein proceeded to build a team of Lions who would go on to make it to the very top of European football. The Rev. David Potter May 29, 2022 On this Ascension Sunday, we commemorate the earthly departure of Jesus with these words. And through them, the Church is called to unity. This prayer Jesus offers anticipates and responds to a question which will no doubt later surface for Jesus' followers: "Where do we go from here?" Throughout this past week, this same question has continually rumbled around in my own thoughts and prayers. And after completing seminary just last weekend, it is especially relevant. For myself and any others in this graduation season, what comes next is often a question posed to us--just as much as it is a question and discern we ask of ourselves. And surely this same wondering is present here in this community at St. Martin-in the-Fields. Uncertainty is inherent in any search process for new clergy, to say the least. But, still even more widely, in light of over two years of pandemic concerns and restrictions, especially now as they begin to ease, this question seemingly lingers everywhere. Where do we go from here? We are in transition. A world lies behind us which is no more--and the world before us remains unknown. Now, living through these times of change like these is far from easy. At times it may even feel like simply too much. The tension between what has been and what will be can feel like chaos. And in this place, I often find myself searching for some reassurance of stability--for some anchor to hold on. So, for those carrying burdens here in this place this morning, receive this as permission to come as you are. In these brief moments, may we all know and may we remind ourselves that we hold these burdens with and for one another. "That they all may be one." In a moment of tremendous transition, Jesus prays these words. In the remaining instruction of his earthly ministry, his desire for the disciples, for his followers, becomes abundantly clear: that they know they are loved, that they love one another, and that through them the world might come to know love. Soon the disciples will no longer have Jesus with them--and they will face many challenges and much unknown. And it is in this context with great obstacles to loving one another, that Jesus admonishes his followers toward unity. This kind of unity is a discipline to which he knows they will need to return over and over again--because apart from a resilient commitment to one another, the heavy burdens they carry will simply be too much to bear. This kind of unity is no simple feel-good-warm-and-fuzzy feeling. And neither is it a demand for uniformity within the disciples. Rather, what Jesus calls them to, and calls the church to, is something essential to both their individual and their common wellbeing. Now, I admit, in these polarizing times, my initial impulse is not always toward becoming "completely one" with those I disagree with. Perhaps this is something you can relate to. Because cultivating unity across the broad chasms of ideological and political difference can often seem futile and quite naive. And when great potential for harm exists by remaining in relationship with others, especially with others who may not affirm our right to exist, appealing to unity can be quite dangerous. In this past week, yet another mass shooting has claimed the lives of innocent children. This time at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas--merely weeks after the deadly and racist shootings in Detroit and Buffalo. But in the numbing wake of senseless death and overwhelming grief, there are simply no adequate words... Where do we go from here? Unity is risky business. There is much at stake in all that divides us, and there is certainly no lack of issues that divide our society. As this all-too-common occurrence of gun violence becomes ever more increasingly politicized--it seems a deep groaning in my spirit is about all I can muster. A phrase from the poet Nayyirah Waheed reminds me though that it is important to "keep the rage tender." Stay tender in the sorrow, grief, and anger--because when God's image in persons is destroyed, becoming desensitized is spiritual death. The human tenderness required for unity is no easy task--and it would seem there are always obstacles and reasons to turn away from one another. But as James Baldwin writes, "One cannot deny the humanity of another without diminishing one's own." We need one another. In these greatly divided times uplifting the value of remaining in right-relationship with one another is neither easy nor is it very popular. And yet... the Gospel of Jesus Christ invites all persons into common kinship. We must remain tender, somehow or some way... We don't take on this task alone, though. While remaining in community with one another, walking hand in hand, we walk also with those who have gone before us. The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. engages our present predicament in his seminal work entitled: Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community? Two options are present before us. As we midwife this new world and new ways of being, we can either 1) become community or we can 2) descend into chaos. Dr. King offered this still-relevant diagnosis and prescription of our situation in 1967. Either we learn to love one another with shared dignity and belonging, or we will unravel in competitive attempts to preserve an ever-increasing scarcity of individual privileges and liberties. This same wisdom is shared by artists and prophets, visionaries and activists alike--along with anyone who has labored toward a vision of collective flourishing. And we know something in our tradition too: week after week in our liturgy we pray "Bless all whose lives are closely linked with ours..." All of human life is interwoven in a web of mutuality. The ability to know and have life in abundance ourselves is interdependent on each and every person's ability. If healing, wholeness, and joy are to be made complete in our lives, we must recognize it is inseparable from that of our neighbors. So, in this rising tide of polarization--of social transition and civic tension--where do we go from here? "Righteous Father," Jesus prays, "the world does not know you, but I know you... I made your name known to them, and I will make it known..." Guided by the upside-down logic of our common faith, we hold these claims: that enemies cannot be destroyed--but only transformed by love... that liberty preserved at the end of a gun's barrel is a false freedom... that salvation comes not by instruments of death--but through their subversion... When Jesus admonishes his followers toward common belonging like that love that is shared within the Trinity, he holds no illusions of calm, ideal circumstances. Rather, it is within the midst of many obstacles--and his appeal to unity is made on a foundation of a radical ethic of love - love for one's self, for one's neighbor, for God. Because it is only through deep abiding love that we can remain in relationship and become community. As we grasp for stability, it is this common faith in the Gospel of Jesus Christ which is and will be our anchor. So Beloveds, when we inevitably fail to dwell together in unity; when the yoke of faith feels anything but easy and light; when we are wearied and heavy laden: Know that we do not walk alone. Even in our weakness the Spirit of God, with sighs too deep for words, intercedes on our behalf, leading us into the way of salvation. So then, that we might become "completely one:" may our shared mourning and action and prayer through the Spirit empower us to become beloved community, and participate in the healing and salvation of this nation. Celtic Soul Podcast Episode 100. More than 90 Minutes Editor Andrew Milne is joined by Celtic historian and author David Potter to chat about the life of Celtic Legend Bertie Auld who sadly passed away recently and was giving a fitting send off by the Celtic family. Bertie Auld will be remembered fondly by Celtic fans as a true Celtic Legend, a Lisbon Lion, a Celtic Fan and a great character. David recalls the many times he watched Bertie and his midfield partner Bobby Murdoch in action for Celtic and he has no hesitation in stating that they were the best midfield partnership ever to play for Celtic. Off the pitch Bertie attended supporters' functions around the World and was always happy on match day to sign autographs, pose for pictures and chat to Celtic fans. Bertie sat behind Andrew for a number of seasons in the main stand and he recalls Bertie kicking every ball and loving the tribute on 67 minutes to the great team he played with who conquered Europe. Fan of the show? https://www.patreon.com/newleftradio (Support us on Patreon)! The status quo may seem permanent and unchangeable but as David Potter tells us, there are significant disruptions throughout modern history that have fundamentally changed the world — sometimes seemingly overnight. What can we learn from our past in making the world anew? How can movements breakthrough? Most importantly, are disruptive movements doomed to becoming centrist? About Disruption: Why Things Change How do things change? The question is critical to the historical study of any era but it is also a profoundly important issue today as western democracies find the fundamental tenets of their implicit social contract facing extreme challenges from forces espousing ideas that once flourished only on the outskirts of society. This books argues that radical change always begins with ideas that took shape on the fringes. Throughout time the "mainstream" has been inherently conservative, allowing for incremental change but essentially dedicated to preserving its own power structures as the dominant ideology justifies existing relationships. In this tour of radical change across Western history, David Potter will show how ideologies that develop in opposition or reaction to those supporting the status quo are employed to effect profound changes in political structures that will in turn alter the way that social relations are constructed. Not all radical groups are the same, and all the groups that the book will explore take advantage of challenges that have already shaken the social order. They take advantage of mistakes that have challenged belief in the competence of existing institutions to be effective. It is the particular combination of an alternative ideological system and a period of community distress that are necessary conditions for radical changes in direction. The historical disruptions chronicled in this book-the rise of Christianity, rise of Islam, Protestant reformations, Age of Revolution (American and French), and Bolshevism and Nazism--will help readers understand when the preconditions exist for radical changes in the social and political order. As Disruption demonstrates, not all radical change follows paths that its original proponents might have predicted. An epilogue helps situate contemporary disruptions, from the rise of Trump and Brexit to the social and political consequences of technological change, in the wider historical forces surveyed by the book. https://global.oup.com/academic/product/disruption-9780197518823?cc=ca&lang=en&# (Buy the book here) About David Potter David Potter is Francis W. Exactly four months ago, I started Johannes Fried's biography of Charlemagne, the man often referred to as "the father of Europe." Yesterday I finished the work. The man, if not his treatment by Fried, reminded me of Constantine the Emperor by David Potter. And it makes sense to consider these two emperors together. In both Constantine and Charlemagne, we have heads of state who endeavor to combine Christian Church and the governing of the state in ways which stand out in history as transformative. Their legacies echo through the centuries, even though their ways of thinking about themselves and their roles seem so foreign to us in our modern, Progressive, secular humanist context. But it would be overly simplistic to project too much on the likes of Charlemagne from our current mode of thinking and organizing. While it may be inescapable that we interpret him through the hindsight of twelve-hundred-years, we should take care to not throw babies out with bathwater, or relegate his aspiring Christian governance to shrewd political calculation and self-promotion. Charlemagne thought very differently about his responsibilities as king and emperor in large part due to the influence of Augustine's City of God. Moreover, the situation facing Charlemagne was like that which confronted Constantine, one where violent and depraved pagans threatened Christendom with not secularism but a form of rule informed and guided by cruel, capricious, and merciless mythologies. "The father of Europe" was not faced with a choice between sophisticated secularism on the one hand or Christian theocracy on the other - not with Viking raids from the north and Muslim conquests to the south. Moreover, we do well to consider what else a Christian ruler could have done in those circumstances. Perhaps even our forebears saw matters more clearly than we do in our day. When threats from communist China and radical Islam still threaten us, our leaders slough them off on the presumption that godlessness in the West will prevail due to technological superiority, or some innate supremacy in renouncing religion. What if Charlemagne had the right of it, though? At least in some important ways, though certainly not all respects, I think he did. Nature abhors a vacuum, and Charlemagne understood this in light of a Christian faith which was sometimes of questionable sincerity and certain imperfection. And we for our part would be wise to study him to glean lessons from an large-scale attempt to apply Augustine to the task of ruling a people. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/garrett-ashley-mullet/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/garrett-ashley-mullet/support

Daniel speaks with Professor David Potter about his new book which looks at five periods of major historical change to better understand when and where the next big change might come from.

Historically Thinking: Conversations about historical knowledge and how we achieve it

Historians are always interested in how things change over time, and it helps for the survival of the profession that most things do. But there are certain moments in history when things don't just change, they change so radically that it feels like going over a waterfall in a kayak. How do these moments of change come about? How can an entire social order change in a decade or two? And how does radical change in the social order not only occur, but succeed? My guest David Potter untangles these questions in his new book Disruption: Why Things Change. David Potter is Francis W. Kelsey Collegiate Professor of Greek and Roman History and Arthur F. Thurnau Professor of Greek and Latin at the University of Michigan, making him a man with at least two chairs in his office. Previously he has written on prophecy and history, the origins of the Roman Empire, on sport in the Greco-Roman world—and many other books.

One constant in this world is change. Today we'll talk about some of the change we're experiencing now. After 20-year occupation, the US is removing all remaining troops from Afghanistan. The exit was ugly, but they have been, throughout history. We'll start with what's happening now in Afghanistan. While many veterans, politicians and media figures are pointing a finger at Joe Biden, Lucas Kunce isn't. The Iraq and Afghanistan veteran who's running for Senate from MO returns to the show today after pushing back at some of the loudest voices blaming the president and the American people. Then we'll get some historical perspective from David Potter, author of the new book "Disruption: Why Things Change" which looks at what precipitated radical change throughout history.

Today I talked to David Potter about his new book Disruption: Why Things Change (Oxford UP, 2021). Disruption is about radical change-why it happens and how. Drawing on case studies ranging from the fourth century AD through the twentieth century, we look at how long-established systems of government and thought are challenged, how new institutions are created and new ideas become powerful. While paying attention to the underlying political, intellectual, economic and environmental sources of social disruption, we will see that no matter what similarities there might be between forces that shake different societies, these underlying factors do not dictate specific outcomes. The human actors are ultimately the most important, their decisions drive the conclusions that we see over time. Through our case studies we can explore successful and unsuccessful decision making, and the emergence of the ideas that conditioned human actions. We'll explore the development of Islam and of Christian doctrine, of constitutional thought, of socialism and social Darwinism. We'll look at how these ideas, all of them emerging on the fringes of society became central. Craig Sorvillo is a PhD candidate in modern Eureaopn history at the University of Florida. Our guest, Dena Yohe, is the author of the book You Are Not Alone. She has personal experience with her own troubled teen, and will give us practical advice to help parents with their struggling teens. Dena Yohe is the wife of a former pastor, and the mother of a formerly troubled daughter, Renee Yohe. Renee, was a once-suicidal, addicted, depressed, self-harming girl whose situation led friends to start the well-known nonprofit To Write Love on Her Arms. Renee's life was also portrayed in the 2015 Sony Pictures release by the same name. Dena and her husband, Tom, live in Orlando, Florida. Their full time work now is with their ministry, Hope for Hurting Parents. How to Cope if you Have a Troubled Teen Well, by the time I see parents at Shepherds Hill Academy (SHA), they're more than sideways. They're upside down and inside out. They're crushed. Today's guest will do a much better job of sharing those feelings than I could ever begin to do. In fact, I might even come across a bit callous to a lot of parents at SHA, because:  I'm not nearly as emotionally involved as the parents are.  I haven't been the recipient of their child's abuse for months and years.  I know how these things usually turn out after a year at SHA. For the parents in the middle of their journey they can't see the light at the end of the tunnel. Many feel they have nobody to lean on or to identify with. Usually parents' greatest concern is that they just want their teen to be happy; which, I think is a misguided and culturally-driven emotion. Usually, their greatest need is relief—to see light at the end of the tunnel and the hope of an emotionally, psychologically and spiritually healthy child. That's been my experience. Our guest may see it vastly different. Either way, she's here—not so much for the sake of giving advice about healing kids, but to help parents deal with the difficulties of dealing with their troubled teen. Because, not only are there a lot of hurting parents out there, but there are a lot of self-defeating thoughts that go along with that hurt. Topics Dena shares: Dena's story and how she walked through the journey of a troubled teen. Are there more families struggling with troubled teens than years past. Encouragements that will help you cope amidst the crisis of a troubled teen. How to address the spiritual component to your teen's challenges. Signs that your teen may be troubled. How to develop a relationship with your struggling teen. What role sin plays into the internal struggle with troubled teens. Picture provided by DR. DAVID POTTER.

Thanks to the writings of Procopius and other detractors, the Byzantine empress Theodora (c. 495-548 CE) has long been viewed as a depraved and spiteful woman who was a negative influence on her husband Justinian. In his new book Theodora: Actress, Empress, Saint (Oxford University Press, 2015), historian David Potter draws upon a wide range of sources to offer a very different view of her life and times. From relatively humble beginnings she became a successful actress and the mistress of a powerful Byzantine official. After being abandoned by her lover, she caught the attention of Justinian, who married her in spite of the risk that doing so posed to his chances of becoming emperor. Once she became empress in 527, she not only undertook the considerable duties of empress but served as well as an influential adviser to her husband, shaping the politics, religion, and society of her age. By setting her into the context of 6th century Byzantium, Potter fills in many of the gaps in our understanding of Theodora, showing in the process just how remarkable she was as both a person and as a leader.
