Free tickets to see Judith at the Jazz Cafe London on Monday 24th of July. www.judithowen.nethttps://www.instagram.com/judithowenmusichttps://twitter.com/judithowenJudith Owen, a performer whose stylistic range spans rock, pop, classical, jazz, blues, and musical theatre, Owen is also a comedic actress and master storyteller. Born into an overtly musical Welsh family, Judith Owen grew up in London surrounded by classical music, ballet, theatre, and the fine arts. Owen was also exposed to many jazz icons and Broadway musicals that her parents loved (the mixture would become her signature sound). Owen quickly began performing at a variety of different venues around London. Her unique hybrid of classical/ jazz-influenced styled sound soon affirmed a regular slot at Ronnie Scotts. The latest iteration of Owen began with the arrival of her 13th album, Come On & Get It. The project is rooted in her childhood fascination with the jazz music of some of the ballsiest women of the Jazz and Blues world, including unsung trailblazers - Nellie Lutcher and Julia Lee - whom she discovered hidden on the shelves of her father's record collection. Captivated and enchanted by these "unapologetic" chanteuses of the 40's/50's (along with Pearl Bailey, Dinah Washington, Blossom Dearie, Peggy Lee, Julie London), Owen made it her mission to dig deep and find out more from both a musical and historical perspective. The album was recorded at Esplanade Studios in New Orleans - the city Owen now calls home - with a stellar cast of musicians, including Jason Marsalis, Donald Harrison, Charlie Gabriel, Nicholas Payton, David Torkanowsky, Kevin Louis, Evan Christopher, Ricardo Pascal and many more. The result is the most joyful, uplifting, and empowering project. With the London Times calling it ‘one of the most joyous releases of the year', and having garnered support from flagship Jazz radio stations Jazz FM in the UK, TSF in France, and plays across NPR stations in the US, the album has already reached over a million streams on Spotify. Owen kicked off 2023 performing to thrilled audiences in Europe with sold out shows in both Paris and Milan. Accompanied by her All Star New Orleans band ‘the Gentlemen Callers', Owen's live shows are an ‘exercise in confidence' as she “lights up the room with her red hair and her charisma.” “In a snap of her fingers, she takes her .. audience with her, and dictates the tempo to her musicians with a naturalness that is almost divine.” [Toute la Culture] Owen will be on the road for much of 2023 starting with shows in New Orleans this May, before taking a 5 night residency at The McKittrick in New York. She returns to Europe this summer for a series of festival dates and a headline show promoted by Jazz FM at London's Jazz Cafe, before touring across the US in the fall. Judith Owen is co-creator and co-host of the annual “Christmas Without Tears” charity variety show, alongside husband Harry Shearer, that has featured guests including Steven Merchant, Tim Minchin, Catherine O'Hara, and many others.  Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Mike and I had a great time talking to Bill Summers (who was in Herbie Hancock's band The Headhunters)!  We talk about various drums, his first meeting with Herbie Hancock, and the famous sound Bill created for one of the best known Jazz songs ever ... called Watermelon Man... Bill even demonstrates for us how the sound was created. About Bill: During the 1990s, Summers played with Los Hombres Calientes along with co-leader of the group, trumpeter Irvin Mayfield and Jason Marsalis.  However, Summers has a much longer musical career, often working behind the scenes on film scores for various movies such as The Color Purple and the television miniseries Roots with Quincy Jones. He also played with Herbie Hancock during The Headhunters years, and is mentioned in passing by the liner notes of The Headhunters' 2003 release Evolution Revolution as contributing to that recording.   Check out the Headhunters newest album (sections of 4 of the new songs can be heard on our podcast) THE HEADHUNTERS - Speakers in the House released in November 2022: Speakers In The House is the legendary jazz-funk ensemble's first new album in 11 years. Co-lead by percussionist Bill Summers and drummer Mike Clark with support from NEA Jazz Master Donald Harrison on alto saxophone, The Headhunters latest studio effort arrives just in time to celebrate this American music institution's 50th anniversary in 2023, having formed around Herbie Hancock's classic recording, Head Hunters, in 1973. An eight-track set available on Ropeadope Records, highlights from Speakers In The House include the New Orleans' second-line grooves of "Rocking At The Mole House," the world music-influenced jazz-fusion of "Kongo Square" and a modern post-bop re-imagination of the classic Headhunters' composition "Actual Proof," first released on their 1974 album, Thrust. Joining Summers, Clark and Harrison for the recording are keyboardist Stephen Gordon and bassist Reggie Washington plus special guests Jerry Z on organ, One Drop aka Scott Roberts on drums, Fode Sissoko on Kora and Ashlin Parker on trumpet. ******** KNOW GOOD MUSIC can be found on Podbean (host site) Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Iheart Radio, Pandora and almost anywhere you listen to podcasts.     Visit our YouTube Channel where you can see 3 short video segments from our interviews.  Just search "know good music".   Thank you for listening! - Jim  COPYRIGHT CLAIM: The songs : "WE CALL IT THE BOX" by Bill Summers & Summer Heat / "OVER THE BAR", "STOOP", "STOP WATCH" and "ROCKIN' IN THE MOLE HOUSE" by The Headhunters used with permsission by Greg Lucas

Renowned instrumentalist, Branford Marsalis, has spent four decades in the international spotlight touring the globe and perfecting his skillsets as the standard-bearer of modern jazz. The Louisiana native also comes from a musical family, with brothers—Wynton, Delfeayo and Jason—becoming acclaimed jazz musicians; and his father, the patriarch Ellis Marsalis, Jr., a jazz pianist and educator himself. But how does a three-time Grammy Award-winner maintain his longevity in a recording industry submerged in a world that continues to grapple with notions of social unrest and injustice? How is he able to sustain such an artistic excellence in musicianship despite the racial tension and political polarization happening in this country? Stay tuned as I SEE U Host Eddie Robinson speaks unguarded with legendary composer and bandleader, Branford Marsalis. He talks candidly about the motivation behind his music; how his father, who died in 2020 from COVID-19 complications, helped inspire his approach to confronting racism; and what he really thinks about the future of American democracy.

This week, I had the chance to interview the great Dave Potter, who is one of my favorite drummers. His playing is powerful, sensitive, and swinging and he has been gaining wide attention for his work both as a leader and sideman. In addition to his role as the long time drummer of the Jason Marsalis Vibes Quartet, Dave has performed with Marcus Roberts, Ellis Marsalis, Marcus Printup, Russell Gunn, Greg Tardy, and many others. In 2017, Dave released his first album as a bandleader, You Already Know, which is an amazing album that features musicians like Jason Marsalis, Louis Heriveaux, Miguel Alvarado, Marus Roberts, and Craig Shaw among other great players. Based in Atlanta, Dave maintains a busy teaching and performing schedule. Stephen Gordon's bio "I fell in love with all the sounds I heard as a child, so I pursued them" says Drummer/Pianist/Composer STEPHEN GORDON of Charlotte, N.C. - "Rather it was Gospel music at church, Funk and Motown with my Dad, Rock and Metal with my friends, Swing or European Classical literature with my peers and colleagues - I did it all." From the age of 4 years old, it became apparent that young Stephen would emerge into the world bringing forth sound, art, visual perspectives and living melodies to all that he pursued. Through the piano, taking lessons from the age of 5 with many teachers of different perspectives at the guidance of his parents and family, Stephen began playing the trumpet at age 12, which ventured into all brass, woodwinds, and eventually the drums and percussion. "They wanted to expand the Mass Choir at church, so my Dad and I became the rhythm section - That will always be my favorite rhythm section: Me and my Dad." From traditional and contemporary Gospel music, Stephen began sitting in and eventually gigging around Charlotte as a drummer and a keyboardist. "It was the Swing that I heard that I wanted to pursue. When I saw Terence Blanchard Sextet live at 15 years old, I said - Yeah, that's what I want to do; Swing." This path would lead Stephen to graduate high school from Northwest School of The Arts in Charlotte, N.C. and pursue touring and traveling internationally/nationally. "I got so many opportunities to travel with the choir, that when it came to gigging and touring with bands and my friends, I didn't see a difference; I was still going after that sound." These opportunities would lead to Stephen traveling and living in many different places and playing with some of the musicians and educators pushing the forefront of this music - pianist Ellis Marsalis, Jr., drummer Mike Clark, organist Joey DeFrancesco, trombonist Wayne Henderson, trombonist Fred Wesley, pianist Cyrus Chestnut, alto saxophonist Donald Harrison, Jr., percussionist Bill Summers, drummer/vibraphonist Jason Marsalis, alto saxophonist Wessell Anderson, vocalist Kurt Elling, pianist Aaron Goldberg, trumpeter Bobby Shew, trombonist Steve Turre, trumpeter Raymond Williams, Sr., bassist Roland Guerin, Poet Abidune Olyewole (The Last Poets), trombonist Tyrone Jefferson - to name a few. Stephen has performed in venues such as Tchaichovsky Hall in Moscow, Russia, The National Concert Hall in Taipei City, Taiwan, Opéra Bastille in Paris, France, The Kursk Philharmonia in Kursk, Russia, Lincoln Center in New York, New York, Ronnie Scott's in London, England, C Venues in Edinburgh, Scotland, The Village Vanguard, The Blue Note and The Jazz Standard in New York, New York, Blues Alley in DC, Babylon in Istanbul, Turkey, The North Sea Jazz Festival in Amsterdam, and many other great venues across the world. Beside playing and touring, recording and teaching have been prospects for Stephen to share in his talents and learn and grow as a musician and as a person. As Stephen resides in Charlotte, N.C., you may catch him all over the world on any given day, swinging and grooving. For all info, check out www.stephengordonmusic.com, as well as YouTube, Facebook and Instagram! In the past couple of weeks, we’ve seen tremendous movement to defund the police and move into communities and economies of care across the country. This is long, long, overdue, yet we notice some real resistance from those who are just beginning to get involved with this work when it comes to imagining a world without the police. However, at this point, can any of us look to the world and feel confident that the police care about us? This week we’re re-releasing our episode with Mariame Kaba on Moving Past Punishment. Mariame joins us for an expansive conversation on Transformative Justice, community accountability, criminalization of survivors, and freedom on the horizon. We invite you to take a listen to this episode this week as a resource to feel empowered to further conversations on abolition, the movement to defund the police, and the violent and oppressive history of policing against our Black, Indigenous, and brown relatives, as well as to hopefully find the organizations in your community that have been doing this work since the beginning. Mariame Kaba is an organizer, educator and curator who is active in movements for racial, gender, and transformative justice. She is the founder and director of Project NIA, a grassroots organization with a vision to end youth incarceration. She has co-founded multiple organizations and projects over the years including We Charge Genocide, the Chicago Freedom School, the Chicago Taskforce on Violence against Girls and Young Women, Love and Protect and most recently Survived and Punished. Wallace Roney - In her family 2. Wallace Roney – I Will Always Love You 3. Manu Dibango - Soul Makossa 4. Michael Longo - The Last Tango in Paris 5. Marcelo Peralta – All of me 6. Ellis marsalis - Never let me go 7. Ellis y Bradford Marsalis – Stela by Starling 8. Bucky Pizzarrelli – The way you look tonight 9. Bucky Pizzarelli y Stephane Grappelli – Blues 10. Bucky pizzarelli - Breakfast at Tiffany's / Dreamsville

Don't forget to hit the like button! Connect with Jason Here: http://jasonmarsalis.com/ Connect with us Here: http://secondlinearts.org Bio: From a tender young age, it was clear that Jason Marsalis had what it took to be great. Jason is the son of pianist and music educator Ellis Marsalis and his wife Dolores, and the youngest sibling of Wynton, Branford and Delfeayo. Together, the four brothers and their patriarch Ellis, comprise New Orleans venerable first family of jazz. Ellis and Dolores began to cultivate Jason's interest in music at age three, with the purchase of a toy set of drums. Jason is fond of telling the story of a game he and his parents would play with the drums. “When I was three, my parents bought me a toy drum set and the used to introduce me to an imaginary audience. They would say, ‘Ladies and gentleman introducing the fabulous Jason!' and I would come out and start banging away much to my parents delight. I too enjoyed it to the point that I started to go up to my parents unsolicited and say, ‘Dad, introduce me again!'” By age six, not only had Jason gotten his first real drum set, but he was also taking lessons from the legendary New Orleans drummer James Black. At age seven he was sitting in with his father's jazz group, as well as playingwith his trombonist brother Delfeayo. Jason was progressing so rapidly as a drummer that in 1984 his father started using him consistently on engagements. Jason was starting to become a seasoned road veteran before the age of nine, even traveling to the prestigious Berklee School of Music in Boston for older brother Delfeayo's recital. Though Jason had also taken up violin at age five, drums remained his primary focus throughout his grade school years. However, in his last year living in Richmond, VA,it was as a member of a junior youth orchestra that he first discovered the percussion section. The following year, Jason gave up the violin and focused exclusively on percussion. In 1991, he auditioned and was accepted to the acclaimed New Orleans Center for the Creative Arts High School (NOCCA). Throughout his high school years he continued to hone his skills by playing gigs with his father and brothers, as well as studying orchestral percussion techniques at the venerable Eastern Music Festival. Shortly after graduation from NOCCA in 1995, Marsalis ascended to the drum throne of a new group lead by virtuoso pianist and former sideman for Wynton Marsalis, Marcus Roberts.
