We are conquerors through Christ over every sin and obstacle that hinders us from fully obeying the Word and will of Christ. Often times we fixate on the sin or the obstacle in hopes of conquering them. This is a faulty fixation. Our focus must be set on God Himself. Let's learn this from the life of Nehemiah. As David response to the chastening of God, we find him returning to God and desiring with all his heart to be right with God. He sees his God as perfectly holy, yet enduringly merciful. Paul has been working bi-vocationally in the city of Corinth. During the week he was making tents with Aquila and Priscilla and on Saturday he was striking up conversations at the synagogue concerning Jesus Christ. He was planting seeds of the Gospel. When his coworkers arrived with much needed physical, spiritual and financial help, Paul was enabled to completely focus on preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ. This brought on much fear and opposition, but with fresh vision from God, Paul was encourage and embraced God's instruction wholeheartedly. As he did, God fulfilled His revealed promise. As we study this passage, may we see how that Paul's experience can be ours as well in our community during this season. Paul left Athens to continue his second missionary tour. He left behind several believers who turned to Christ from the rampant idolatry of Athens. He journeyed on his own some fifty miles to Corinth, the capital city of Achaia. The wickedness of Corinth cannot be overstated. Yet Paul would spend eighteen months there faithfully laboring bi-vocationally to win the Corinthians to Jesus Christ. While in Corinth, God blessed Paul with two lifetime friends, who would become helpers in Christ, as well as reuniting him with Timotheus and Silas. When Paul came to Athens, there was no group of believers. There was no followers of Christ in his age group to fellowship with. There was no church assembling in a home or building in town to sing praises to Christ and grow in His grace. There was no Wednesday children's Bible club, youth group or nursery. There was no pastor faithfully preaching the Word and caring for people. It was a dark, idolatrous city that had great influence in the Greek world. It was filled to the brim with the worship of every god but God. Paul's actions give us a pattern for engaging a pagan society. In Matthew 11, Jesus has confronted both a restless generation and their resulting great rejection. They had rejected the preaching of John the Baptist and the person of Christ the Messiah. Jesus pled with the gathered crowd to hear His message and invited them to himself with seventeen wonderful words. “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” He promised rest to all those who would come to Him, acknowledging their exhausting labor to be good enough for God and the burden of their own sinfulness. Those who would respond in faith to His invitation would receive the rest of Christ's eternal salvation. It does not end there! Jesus goes on to describe how those who have received His salvation can experience rest with Him throughout their daily lives no matter what is happening. This He does with two commands and a promise. John the Baptist was in prison. He had preached and prepared the way for Jesus Christ as he had been called of God to do. When he first saw Christ, he declared publicly, "Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.” (John 1:29) However, as he sat in prison awaiting execution, he began to wonder if his preaching had been in vain. John sent two of his followers with a question for Jesus. “Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another?” Jesus graciously responded to John's question with a message highlighting the visible proofs of His deity—His mighty works. As the followers of John returned with this message, Jesus began to preach a sermon to the Galilean crowd that had been overhearing this interaction. He challenged the crowd about the person and message of John the Baptist and why they had not accepted it. Jesus then declared a message to that audience that still rings true for us today. He began with a plea for people to have ears to hear and concludes it with an invitation that everyone should accept. Matthew 11:15 He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. Jesus has come through the rigorous temptation by satan himself and been strengthened by angels. He has called Peter, James, John and Andrew to be His disciples and has begun His formal earthly ministry. Masses of people were amazed and attracted by the miracles He performed while not receiving the message He preached. After a particularly hectic day, we find Jesus getting alone with His Father for direction. What we will learn together from this day with Jesus will transform us. If we will embrace the example of Christ, it will enable us to stop being driven by the demands of life and start being directed by will and priority of God. After comforting the new believers in Philippi, Paul and Silas move onto new mission fields with the Good News of Christ. Likely, Luke and Timothy remained in Philippi to continue ministering to the young church plant. Paul and Silas passed through two Macedonian cities before halting in Thessalonica. As they preached in the synogogue, many turned to Christ by faith causing envious, non-believing Jews to rise up in opposition. They were accused of turning the world upside down with their preaching of Christ. The new believers rushed Paul and Silas out of town and they arrived at Berea. Immediately, Paul found the hearts of the people to be ready to receive the preaching of the Word of God concerning Jesus as the Messiah. At some point while Paul was ministering there, Timothy seems to have rejoined Paul and Silas likely bearing a second love offering (Philippians 4:15-16) from the Philippian believers. This was given to meet Paul's needs he had incurred while ministering in Thessalonica (1 Thessalonians 2:19). It was not long until the same envious, non-believing Jews travelled from Thessalonica to stir up the city of Berea against Paul and his preaching. He was once again escorted out of town by committed brethren and arrived in Athens to continue preaching Jesus Christ. Paul, Silas, Timothy and Luke are in Philippi, a colony of Rome. It was a city gripped by paganism, Emperor worship and satanic possession. Being a Roman military outpost, Roman Nationalism was entrenched in the culture of the city. Anything that opposed that would be rejected. The vibrant, distinct, bold presence and witness of followers of Christ would naturally contradict such a culture. Paul and his teammates would face severe and even unlawful persecution, however, Jesus would continue to build His church within Philippi.
