So he distributed the assets to them. 13 Not many days later, the younger son gathered together all he had and traveled to a distant country, where he squandered his estate in foolish living. 14 After he had spent everything, a severe famine struck that country, and he had nothing. 15 Then he went to work for one of the citizens of that country, who sent him into his fields to feed pigs. 16 He longed to eat his fill from the pods that the pigs were eating, but no one would give him anything. 17 When he came to his senses, he said, ‘How many of my father's hired workers have more than enough food, and here I am dying of hunger! 18 I'll get up, go to my father, and say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight. 19 I'm no longer worthy to be called your son. Make me like one of your hired workers.”' 20 So he got up and went to his father. But while the son was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion. He ran, threw his arms around his neck, and kissed him. 21 The son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight. I'm no longer worthy to be called your son.'22 “But the father told his servants, ‘Quick! Bring out the best robe and put it on him; put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. 23 Then bring the fattened calf and slaughter it, and let's celebrate with a feast, 24 because this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found!' So they began to celebrate.25 “Now his older son was in the field; as he came near the house, he heard music and dancing. 26 So he summoned one of the servants, questioning what these things meant. 27 ‘Your brother is here,' he told him, ‘and your father has slaughtered the fattened calf because he has him back safe and sound.'28 “Then he became angry and didn't want to go in. So his father came out and pleaded with him. 29 But he replied to his father, ‘Look, I have been slaving many years for you, and I have never disobeyed your orders, yet you never gave me a goat so that I could celebrate with my friends. 30 But when this son of yours came, who has devoured your assets with prostitutes, you slaughtered the fattened calf for him.'31 “‘Son,' he said to him, ‘you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. 32 But we had to celebrate and rejoice, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.'”Luke 15:17-19"Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you." (This was his confession of sin.)"I am no longer worthy to be called your son." (This affirmed the consequences of his sin.)"Make me as one of your hired men." (This was his offer to make pay back/make amends.)Luke 15:20 So he got up and went to his father. Why does God allow suffering? Why does evil exist? Why do some people die while others live? These are the deep, soul-searching questions we all wrestle with at some point in our lives. In this episode, we explore the biggest "why" questions we have for God—questions about justice, suffering, and divine purpose. Join us as we confront the difficult realities of suffering, the fairness of God, and the ultimate question: Why did Jesus have to suffer? This episode challenges us to shift our perspective from questioning God's fairness to standing in awe of his wisdom, patience, and power.Jonah 1:2Jonah 3:4-10Jonah 4:1-4Psalm 37:71 John 4:16Romans 5:3-5Job 1:1-3Job 3:11Job 21:7,15Job 13:3,24Job 40-42Job 38:1-7Luke 9:221 Samuel 15:2,3Exodus 17Deuteronomy 25:17,18Genesis 3John 3:16John 13:7Isaiah 55:8Romans 8:28 You can now also WATCH C.L.! Have you ever felt discouraged because your harvest didn't match your seed? Perhaps you sowed financially, but the return didn't come in the same form. If we're not careful, we'll become discouraged and believe that our investment was in vain, our efforts weren't enough, or that God didn't answer. In this season, it's so important that we are intentional on what we sow, where we sow, and how we sow. And even understand that some seeds may not be harvested for us, they may be for others or for your future lineage. Reference Scriptures:Galatians 6:7Luke 8:52 Corinthians 9:6-7

Amen. The First LessonActs 3:12-19Peter addressed the people, “You Israelites, why do you wonder at this, or why do you stare at us, as though by our own power or piety we had made him walk? The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, the God of our ancestors has glorified his servant Jesus, whom you handed over and rejected in the presence of Pilate, though he had decided to release him. But you rejected the Holy and Righteous One and asked to have a murderer given to you, and you killed the Author of life, whom God raised from the dead. To this we are witnesses. And by faith in his name, his name itself has made this man strong, whom you see and know; and the faith that is through Jesus has given him this perfect health in the presence of all of you.“And now, friends, I know that you acted in ignorance, as did also your rulers. In this way God fulfilled what he had foretold through all the prophets, that his Messiah would suffer. Repent therefore, and turn to God so that your sins may be wiped out.”The ResponsePsalm 4Cum invocarem1 Answer me when I call, O God, defender of my cause; *you set me free when I am hard-pressed;have mercy on me and hear my prayer.2 "You mortals, how long will you dishonor my glory; *how long will you worship dumb idolsand run after false gods?"3 Know that the Lord does wonders for the faithful; *when I call upon the Lord, he will hear me.4 Tremble, then, and do not sin; *speak to your heart in silence upon your bed.5 Offer the appointed sacrifices *and put your trust in the Lord.6 Many are saying, "Oh, that we might see better times!" *Lift up the light of your countenance upon us, O Lord.7 You have put gladness in my heart, *more than when grain and wine and oil increase.8 I lie down in peace; at once I fall asleep; *for only you, Lord, make me dwell in safety. The Epistle1 John 3:1-7See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and that is what we are. The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Beloved, we are God's children now; what we will be has not yet been revealed. What we do know is this: when he is revealed, we will be like him, for we will see him as he is. And all who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure.Everyone who commits sin is guilty of lawlessness; sin is lawlessness. You know that he was revealed to take away sins, and in him there is no sin. No one who abides in him sins; no one who sins has...

D. Greear that I mentionedHere is the J. D. Greear Quote:"When the Holy Spirit, your real Shepherd speaks, it's in the context of hope. Yes, He will convict you of sin, but when He does, it is redemptive. He identifies what He wants you to change, He gives you a plan to do it, and He assures you of His ability to accomplish it through your life. His voice leads to clarity, and love, and life. When one of the demonic realm speaks to you with a fiery dart, it is in the context of condemnation and despair. It is never clear what they want you to change, there is certainly no hope or no redemption in it. The voice just screams hopelessness and despair.…When our enemy speaks, it has the soundtrack of death, and defeat, and confusion, and despair. When Jesus speaks, it is filled with invitation, and clarity, and love, and hope. Any voice leading you to confusion and despair is your enemy's voice, even if it's using valid questions or pointing out true facts.…My shepherd never leads to confusion and darkness. He leads only to life. Even if Satan is pointing out true things in your life, if it's leading you to despair, recognize that as his voice and resist it.…In your life, the voice of despair is the voice of Satan and never the voice of the Holy Spirit."Scriptures referenced:Psalm 127:1Matthew 10:282 Kings 6:8-17James 1:5Ephesians 6:10-13James 4:71 Peter 5:8-9Ephesians 4:26-27Luke 10:17-20Revelation 12:7-112 Corinthians 2:5-111 Timothy 4:1-22 Corinthians 11:13-151 Corinthians 10:13Psalm 91:11-12Hebrews 1:14Matthew 26:51-54Hebrews 13:2John 4:24Romans 8:28Genesis 1-3Genesis 1:27-28John 10:27Matthew 4:5-7Luke 4:132 Kings 3:5-10James 4:6Judges 6:36-40Galatians 6:2John 10:10aAs a reminder,  if you gave to this ministry in 2023 and didn't receive an email with your contribution records for when you file taxes, please email us at ijustwanttotalkabout@gmail.com, and we will get it sorted out! 92 - The Problem Of Preaching At Christmas

The Preaching Matters Podcast

Preaching a compelling Christmas message is a challenging assignment. How can we stay fresh year after year? Let me offer a few suggestions.1. Capture the true wonder of Christmas. Set it in the total context of the drama of redemption. 2. Avoid allegorical and sentimental approaches. Christmas messages focusing exclusively on the “sweet, precious baby in the manger” are inadequate and irresponsible. Like the flood account of Genesis, the Christmas story is a story of God's supernatural provision of Himself as Immanuel. At the same time, Scripture indicates that Immanuel was born to be our Savior, who would die as our substitute to deliver us from judgment.3. Explore less familiar texts. Tackle texts like Micah 5:2-5 contain the prophecy related to Bethlehem and assert the coming of the One who will be great to the “ends of the earth.” Consider also Zechariah's Benedictus in Luke 1:67-79. In this passage, Zechariah refers to Jesus as the “Horn of Salvation,” referring not to a musical instrument but to an animal's offensive weapons—horns. The following Bible passages make excellent preaching texts. Old TestamentNumbers 24:15–17Isaiah 11:1–10Psalm 2Isaiah 40:1–11Psalm 8Ezekiel 34:22–24Isaiah 9:1–7 (esp. v. 6)Micah 5:2New TestamentMatthew 1:18–25John 1:1–4Matthew 2:1–11John 1:1–14Matthew 2:13–232 Corinthians 8:9Luke 1:5–252 Corinthians 9:15Luke 1:26–38Galatians 4:4–6Luke 1:39–45Philippians 2:1–8Luke 1:46–56Colossians 1:15–20Luke 1:57–661 Timothy 1:15Luke 1:67–801 Timothy 3:16Luke 2:1–7Hebrews 2:14–18Luke 2:1–20Hebrews 4:14–16Luke 2:21Hebrews 10:5–7Luke 2:22–384. Connect the cradle and the cross. While Jesus entered this world as an infant in Bethlehem, grew up in Nazareth, called disciples to follow Him, healed the sick, and fed the poor, the author of Hebrews asserts that He was born to die (2:14-15).5. Intensify exposition of the wonder of the incarnation. Remind hearers that the Word did indeed become flesh. Help them grasp in some measure the reality of the Almighty as an infant of inches. Don't allow them to think of the infancy of Jesus without presSupport the showSubscribe to this podcast. Leave us a review. Point your friends to this podcast.Contact me at: alancarr@gmail.com.
