Michael E. Gerber is the Co-founder and Chairman of Michael E. Gerber Companies, which helps businesses achieve growth, order, and productivity. Named the World's #1 Small Business Guru by Inc. Magazine, Michael is an entrepreneurial and small business thought leader who has impacted millions of small business owners and hundreds of thousands of companies worldwide for over 40 years. Michael, the author of the NY Times mega-bestseller The E-Myth Revisited and numerous other worldwide best-selling E-Myth books on small business entrepreneurship, leadership, and management, has also written 32 industry-specific E-Myth Vertical books co-authored by industry experts, covering a wide range of professions, with a mission to transform the state of small business worldwide. In this episode… Whether you've always dreamed of owning a business or stumbled into entrepreneurship, the path to success requires commitment. While many novice business owners have innovative ideas, they lack execution. Without a plan, entrepreneurs ignore setting goals, asking for help, and possibly lose focus. What follows is a state of overwhelm and a risk of failure.  Michael E. Gerber, guru and business thought leader, was a business owner for 10 years before he developed a system to operate a business effectively. Since then, he's written The E-Myth, a foundational book many entrepreneurs consider the bible for success. In The E-Myth, Michael articulates why 80% of businesses fail and an eightfold path — including a dream, a vision, a purpose, and a mission — that leads to business growth.  In this special episode of the eComm Breakthrough Podcast, Josh Hadley interviews Michael E. Gerber, author of The E-Myth Revisited and Co-founder and Chairman of Michael E. Gerber Companies, to discuss why The E-Myth is considered the foundational book for many business owners. Michael conveys the message behind the best-selling book, explains the eightfold path and the dreaming room, and offers advice for business owners. He discovered that it's easier to have two people working on the systemization: one who has the knowledge, and one who does the documentation. If you can figure out what the problem is, then you can consult an expert who has that part of the process already figured out. We talk about creativity all the time, but what does it really mean to be creative? How do we really push at boundaries and stay creative when we need our jobs and incomes to be stable? Finding creativity and balance is one of the biggest challenges for any entrepreneur. Michael E. Gerber is an innovator, entrepreneur, author, and thought leader. He is the author of 29 best-selling E-Myth books, the original of which has been named a WSJ #1 Business Book of All Time. Michael is the originator of the small-business coaching industry, starting his work back in 1976. He's talking with us about the amazing potential of creativity, the four personalities of entrepreneurs, and how to go beyond your comfort zones. Later in our conversation, Michael digs into what it means to create our way through problems, and how to access your creative warrior within. CREATOR WITHIN WARRIOR “Everyone has a creator within.”-Michael E. Gerber Highlights - We are less creative than we can possibly imagine. Creativity is going beyond anything you have ever done before. Look for a chief aggravator to make you uncomfortable and push you into further creativity. Get in touch with the reality of your own mortality. Create your way through fear. Don't let your past success and failures define how you imagine your future. Create systems that anyone can duplicate, so that your model is scalable and simple. Creating a job for yourself is not the same as creating an enterprise. Have a mission and a purpose for your business, not just a dream. One of the first episodes of The Extraordinary Business Book Club podcast featured an interview with Michael E. Gerber talking about one of the most extraordinary business books of all time - The E-Myth Revisited. So it feels very appropriate that we end 2016 with Michael talking about his new book, Beyond the E-Myth: The Evolution of an Enterprise: From a Company of One to a Company of 1000.  Michael turned 80 in 2016, but both the book and the interview demonstrate that his passion for helping small business owners achieve success hasn't dimmed since the E-Myth was first published in 1985, in fact the sense of urgency and passion is if anything greater.  There are big questions in this episode, and the turn of the year is the perfect time to face them.  "Look at yourself more seriously. Stop thinking about how you're going to get by and start pondering what you're going to leave behind."

Is selling the business you love the only way to achieve whatever you want? Michael Gerber, the author of the New York Times bestseller, The E-Myth Revisited, says it is. He says you should be thinking about scaling and selling your small business, even before you start. No wonder he calls himself the Chief Aggravator! In this final interview on my podcast, it seemed fitting to talk about thinking about selling you business before you even begin it, and why you want to scale and grow your business if you ever want to be successful. There were moments when Michael certainly 'aggravated me' as my thoughts around this, with my impending business sabbatical, definitely differ, but in some areas I certainly agree with his thinking. And so do tens of millions of others who have bought his book and followed his work over the 40 years he's been wanting to change the face of small business, the world over. Michael has always wanted small business owners to think of their business as a turnkey business that can be customized and personalized. According to him, you should start your small business by writing an eulogy for it, because it is a part of your legacy. And you don’t get to choose whether you have a legacy or not; you already have one. Your only choice is to engage with it intentionally, or not. In this episode, Michael and I talk about how you can achieve whatever you want if you are willing to begin again. We also discuss if it is worth it to sacrifice everything else in the pursuit of the thing you’re passionate about. This episode will challenge your assumptions about small business, freedom, and even your vision for your life. Proceed with caution. In this episode you'll learn: What a turnkey business is and whether it can be customized and personalized Why would you sell if you actually enjoy and love running your business Whether it's worth sacrificing everything in the pursuit of passion Why our definition of freedom is superficial and are we truly free How he started his business back in 1977 with the mission 'to become the McDonalds of small business consulting'.
