QFF: Quick Fire Friday – Your 20-Minute Growth Powerhouse! Welcome to Quick Fire Friday, the Grow A Small Business podcast series that is designed to deliver simple, focused and actionable insights and key takeaways in less than 20 minutes a week. Every Friday, we bring you business owners and experts who share their top strategies for growing yourself, your team and your small business. Get ready for a dose of inspiration, one action you can implement and quotable quotes that will stick with you long after the episode ends! In this episode of Quick Fire Friday, host Michael Denehey interviews Mike Michalowicz, author and keynote speaker, and discusses his revolutionary Profit First methodology. Highlighting the pitfalls of traditional profit models, Mike shares actionable insights on prioritizing profit to transform businesses and improve financial health. His approach is based on channeling behavior rather than discipline, offering solutions that resonate with small business owners globally. A standout success story involves a struggling horse farm in Australia, where adopting Profit First not only turned profitability around but also strengthened the owners' personal relationships. Other Resources: Profit First: Transform Your Business from a Cash-Eating Monster to a Money-Making Machine Key Takeaways for Small Business Owners: Prioritize Profit First: Flip the traditional profit formula from "Sales - Expenses = Profit" to "Sales - Profit = Expenses." By setting aside profit first, you ensure your business operates within its true financial means. Set Up a Profit Account: Create a dedicated bank account for profit. Even allocating just 1% of your revenue to this account builds the habit and ensures consistent profitability over time. Automate Cash Management: Use Parkinson's Law to your advantage by allocating funds into specific accounts (e.g., profit, owner's pay, taxes). Automation minimizes temptation and ensures disciplined cash flow management. Our hero crafts outstanding reviews following the experience of listening to our special guests. Are you the one we've been waiting for? Reward Yourself as the Owner: Separate your wages for working in the business from profit, which is your reward for taking the risk of starting and running the business. Celebrate even small victories to stay motivated. Profitability Over Debt Dependency: Profitability is the key to eradicating debt. Allocate a portion of your profit to pay off debt while rewarding yourself with a small percentage to maintain morale. Start Small, Start Now: Don't wait for the perfect moment to implement change. Begin with small, manageable steps like opening a profit account and allocating a small percentage of revenue. Gradually scale up as you adjust to the system. One action small business owners can take: One action small business owners can take, according to Mike Michalowicz, is to set up a profit account and allocate at least 1% of every revenue deposit into that account. This simple step helps build the habit of prioritizing profit and ensures that, over time, your business will start to accumulate funds for growth and financial security. This action doesn't require changing your business operations but establishes a crucial financial discipline that can lead to long-term success. Do you have 2 minutes every Friday? Hey #AmWriters, Jennie here. I'm excited to welcome editor and publishing strategist, AJ Harper to the show to talk about the art of helping writers do their best work. AJ helps nonfiction authors write foundational books that enable them to build readership, grow their brand, and make a significant impact on the world. She was part of the writing coaching team for TEDx Cambridge, one of the largest TED events in the world. As a ghost writer and a developmental editor, AJ has worked with business writers of all kinds, guiding them to bestseller lists and to many millions of copies sold. She's worked on 10 books with business writer Mike Michalowicz, including Profit First: Transform Your Business From a Cash Eating Monster to a Money Making Machine. Her own book on writing came out in 2023. It's called Write A Must Read: Craft a Book That Changes Lives, Including Your Own. This book is one of the best books on writing nonfiction I've ever read and it's one of the best books on writing period, which is why I wanted to have AJ come on and talk to us. Our conversation will be incredibly helpful for anyone writing nonfiction, but also for people writing fiction and memoir. AJ is just really smart about story structure, thinking about the reader, and fine tuning your ear for good writing. Her story about how she stepped out from behind the ghostwriting curtain to raise her own voice and claim her own authority is riveting.Books mentioned in the episode:Little Women, Louisa M. AlcottThe Trumpet of the Swan, E.B. WhiteCaddie Woodlawn, Carol Ryrie BrinkHey readers—KJ here. This episode of #AmWriting is brought to you by my latest, Playing the Witch Card. I wrote this at a moment when I needed more magic in my life—but it turned out to be a book about how until we know who we are and what makes us happy, even magic doesn't help. My main character, Flair, is a total control freak who fears the chaos created by her family deck of Tarot cards and the cookies it inspires her to make until she decides that she can harness their power to control the world and people around her—but that's not what the cards are for at all. I was inspired by what I see as the real magic of Tarot cards—and tea leaves and palm reading and every form of oracle: they help us to see and understand our own stories. As someone for whom stories are pretty much everything, I love that. You can buy Playing the Witch Card on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Bookshop.org and my local indie—and I hope you'll love it too. Lisa Larter has a strategic marketing firm, providing consulting services around strategy and business advisement. Like many entrepreneurs, Lisa started off thinking she had to do everything herself. In this episode, she shares the wisdom she's gained from using her growth mindset to gain continual business success. Here's some of what you'll learn in this episode:The role of an entrepreneur in their business. The way in which Lisa's background in retail helped her with marketing. The importance for entrepreneurs of understanding cash flow. How to make sure you're prepared to pay taxes. What let Lisa know that her business idea “had legs.”The wisdom Lisa would impart to her past self. The variety of benefits Lisa has gotten as a member of the Strategic Coach® entrepreneurial community. Show Notes: The entrepreneur's main capability is vision. There are many talented people who don't have a purpose or a vision for using their talents. A lot of people understand sales and profit, but they don't understand cash flow and the timing and movement of money. Meet as many of the right people as you can that you want to do business with. People should aim to have a baseline—a certain amount of cash they want to carry in their business—and do whatever they can to avoid going below that number. Entrepreneurs want freedom in their lives. And money buys you freedom. Every entrepreneur needs some type of mentor, coach, or advisor that they can talk to when they have difficult things going on. You will cap your potential if you don't learn how to lead and build a team. If you're entrepreneurial and you have a dream, it doesn't matter what your background or education is. Interior Designer's Business Blueprint In today's episode I want to share the 7 money tips that I live by as an interior designer! Maybe finances come easy for you or maybe you're more like me where it needs to be built into your schedule and you need a clear list of what needs to be done, what needs attention, and what to focus on. Here's a glance at this episode… I discuss making a ritual out of looking at your finances each week to create a habit and create a ritual of grabbing you favorite coffee or treat. I share how to start paying yourself first via auto-pay to create the habit that ensures you get paid and taken care of even from the start of your business. I dive into how to keep your money siloed and how I use this in my business to make sure my client money and my business money and profit stay separate. I discuss my method for how I use a recurring focused task on my calendar with a checklist to ensure that I can focus on what needs to be done without taking time as invoices, etc come in to stop and take care of those. I have questions for my bookkeeper throughout the month (as I'm sure we all do!) so I share how I manage these questions so that I can stay on top of what's needed. I am a big advocate of auditing your projects to really get a feel for income and time spent on each project and share my methods. I share my simple method of using email tags to set up a system for knowing what needs to be paid or needs attention on the day you are doing your money work! All of us are freelancers for a reason: we want freedom. We also envisioned financial freedom. We're diving deeper into the bookkeeping, the accounting, and the expenses we can write off so that we are not paying the IRS as much. We're getting credit for running our business because we're already paying a self-employment tax. We might as well take off these additional write-offs so we're not penalized for making more money. But we're doing this so we face our numbers, learn our numbers, and know where we're going. My guest Serena Shoup is a corporate CPA turned bookkeeping business CEO. She's a mentor for other bookkeepers & accountants and a mom of 3. She built her business as a side hustle to motherhood when she left corporate to have her second daughter. She's passionate about helping business owners become CEOs and take control of their money through her company Of Course Bookkeeping and she mentors other bookkeepers and accountants to do the same through her company The Ambitious Bookkeeper®️. Listen in to learn more about taking control of your freelance finances to create greater stability essential steps to safeguard your personal assets and streamline your business operations important guidelines and good money habits key deductions that could potentially save you thousands in taxes each year strategies for standing out in your industry and commanding higher rates for your specialized skills Serena is amazing. She actually does bookkeeping for my business. Jason Snider is the Founder and CEO of Aspyr Advisors, a bookkeeping and business advising firm. He's also the Co-founder and Managing Director at Summit eCommerce Advisors, an accounting firm supporting e-commerce professionals. Twenty years in the accounting industry exposed Jason to the challenges e-commerce entrepreneurs face utilizing traditional accounting, and it inspired his vision to create improved solutions. Additionally, as a Certified Profit First Professional, he coaches entrepreneurs by providing them with the tools needed to scale their businesses. In this episode… Bookkeeping is essential for operating a profitable e-commerce business because it helps owners organize and access their finances, plan an annual budget, and understand their financial health. And while it may be cost-effective to do your own bookkeeping, not having thorough accounting knowledge could cause your company to lose money. So how can entrepreneurs manage their company's finances like an accounting professional? Regardless of the method used to log company spending, business owners should habitually review their financial records on a monthly basis. This allows for monthly comparisons and identifying areas where additional spending or cuts may be beneficial. Jason Snider, a certified accountant, recommends using a reliable accounting system such as A2X to accurately track the cost of goods and other data input. Another method for properly managing company funds is implementing a Profit First system. This accounting strategy aims to help small businesses improve their cash flow and profitability by setting aside a percentage of revenue as profit before paying expenses. In today's episode of the eComm Breakthrough Podcast, Josh Hadley welcomes Jason Snider, Founder and CEO of Aspyr Advisors, to discuss innovative e-commerce bookkeeping. Jason shares common bookkeeping mistakes, methodologies for tracking and reconciling the cost of goods, and expounds on the Profit First strategy and how to execute it. Cyndi Thomason is the Founder and President of bookskeep, a financial management tool for e-commerce offering bookkeeping, invoicing, and expense-tracking features. As a master-level certified Profit First professional and certified Fix This Next coach, Cyndi works with e-commerce clients to help them achieve long-term profitability in their business. As an industry thought leader, she devotes much of her time speaking at various events, webinars, and podcasts, including ASD Market Week, SellerCon, Prosper, eCommerceFuel Live, Freedom Ticket, and Bright Ideas. In January 2019, Cyndi released Profit First for Ecommerce Sellers, a best-selling guide that focuses on four critical areas: managing inventory, relying on debt, understanding financial data, and maintaining focus. In this episode… Profit First is a financial management system created by author Mike Michalowicz. The fundamental idea is to prioritize allocation over traditional accounting. The system emphasizes the importance of setting aside profit to drive long-term business success and encourages a disciplined approach to success. How can e-commerce sellers implement the Profit First methodology to maintain profitability while scaling? Profit First professional Cyndi Thomason advocates three practices to accelerate scaling: optimizing inventory management, leveraging manufacturing partnerships, and strategically managing expenses. To enhance your inventory management, order less to ensure a rapid ROI. Cyndi notes that many e-commerce sellers should learn to negotiate with their manufacturers. Beyond building a relationship, practice the art of negotiation — it could secure you 0% financing. This is one of the quickest methods to scale your business. Lastly, focus on the three main drivers of expenses: inventory, Amazon FBA fees, and advertising spend — including assessing your COGS. In this episode of the eComm Breakthrough Podcast, Josh Hadley interviews Cyndi Thomason, Founder and President of bookskeep, about profitability drivers to help your business scale. Cyndi shares her inspiration for writing Profit First for Ecommerce Sellers, lists common bookkeeping hurdles e-commerces sellers face, and explains how to implement the Profit First methodology. Vincenzo Toscano is the Founder and CEO of Ecomcy, a full-service Amazon consultant agency providing strategic support for sellers and vendors. He is also the CEO at Amzbassador, a live marketing software that identifies top Amazon influencers, manages relationships, and tracks results. As an expert in optimizing and scaling Amazon brands, Vincenzo and his team of specialists have consulted over a thousand global e-commerce brands. In this episode… It's easy to measure your success to others as a business owner, but climbing the ladder to profitability isn't a race. However, smart and strategic methods can guarantee you a spot in the exclusive eight-figure club. What actions should you take to earn next-level profits? Amazon consultant Vincenzo Toscano recommends a six-step framework to grow your business. However, he advises sellers to moderately introduce each phase, starting by implementing catalog expansion, product optimization, and external marketing. External marketing includes utilizing blogs, influencers, and brand ambassadors, which helps drive traffic to your website. Once you've launched and optimized new products by updating copy and keywords, sellers should focus on expanding internationally — focusing on the UK and Germany — and become proficient in PPC and manufacturing negotiations. In addition to having favorable relationships with your manufacturer, ensure the payment terms are advantageous to your profit's bottom line. In this episode of the eComm Breakthrough Podcast with Josh Hadley, Vincenzo Toscano, Founder and CEO of Ecomcy, talks about mastermind business growth hacks. Vincenzo discusses brand expansion through new launches, leveraging influencers to promote brands, and hiring specialized experts for an efficient operation. When's the last time you did something you had *no* experience in? And when's the last time you tried to make that thing into a career? While this might be an extreme jump for most people, it's all part of a key philosophy for succeeding in business and life: pushing the boundaries of what you think is “possible.” No one can speak to that philosophy better than David Wood. After life as a consulting actuary to Fortune 100 companies, David built a successful coaching business and became #1 on Google for “life coaching” at one point. He coaches high-performing entrepreneurs, executives, teams, and even prison inmates to amazing results and connection, one conversation at a time. He wrote his coaching philosophy in his book, “Mouse in the Room: Because the Elephant isn't Alone”, with foreword by Jack Canfield. Tune into the full conversation for more on how David made the jump from the corporate world to his own coaching business, his time as a musician (and now his journey as a budding actor), why entrepreneurs typically constrain themselves, several book recommendations, and more. Here's a Glimpse of What You'll Learn: More about the “accident” that led to David leaving the Fortune 100 world and eventually wading into entrepreneurship More on David's new journey of becoming an actor Why David has gone into so many fields in which he had zero experience — and why that philosophy gets to the heart of what he now offers in his coaching business What “you can't read the label from inside the jar” means The story about one of David's clients whose business made $20 million in revenue — but he still wasn't paying himself Why it's so common for entrepreneurs and leaders to constrain themselves — and how to get past that hurdle How David measures success in his life, plus what the “game” is that everyone is playing, whether they realize it or not More about David's book, “Mouse in the Room” and why he wrote it, plus his recommendation for a fiction book that's helped him in his life Resources Mentioned in This Episode: Focus.CEO website David Wood on LinkedIn “Mouse in the Room: Because the Elephant isn't Alone” by David Wood Focus.ceo with David Wood on Facebook Extraordinary Focus with David Wood on YouTube “The Dip: A Little Book That Teaches You When to Quit (and When to Stick)” by Seth Godin “Profit First: Transform Your Business from a Cash-Eating Monster to a Money-Making Machine” by Mike Michalowicz “The Name of the Wind” by Patrick Rothfuss Buy a copy of “Lost at CEO: An Entrepreneur's Guide to Strategy” by Carl J. Mike Michalowicz is the Best Selling Author of "Profit First" Conventional accounting uses the logical (albeit, flawed) formula: Sales - Expenses = Profit. The problem is, businesses are run by humans, and humans aren't always logical. Serial entrepreneur Mike Michalowicz has developed a behavioral approach to accounting to flip the formula: Sales - Profit = Expenses. Just as the most effective weight loss strategy is to limit portions by using smaller plates, Michalowicz shows that by taking profit first and apportioning only what remains for expenses, entrepreneurs will transform their businesses from cash-eating monsters to profitable cash cows. Using Michalowicz's Profit First system, readers will learn that:· Following 4 simple principles can simplify accounting and make it easier to manage a profitable business by looking at bank account balances.· A small, profitable business can be worth much more than a large business surviving on its top line.· Businesses that attain early and sustained profitability have a better shot at achieving long-term growth.https://mikemotorbike.comAre you wanting to: Make More Money (Passively & Actively) ?
