This month's Climate & Energy Forum will address two climate-related issues on our November ballot: State Initiative 1631 and the island's proposed SAFE Mobility Levy.  Come listen in from 10-11:30 am, October 20 at Eagle Harbor Congregational Church. State Initiative 1631 proposes the enactment of a carbon emissions fee of $15 per metric ton of carbon beginning in January 2020 to fund various environmental projects. The Bainbridge Island Safe Access for Everyone (SAFE) Mobility Levy is a seven-year, $15 million tax levy designed to fund shoulder upgrades on roadways, trails with a focus on safe routes to schools, and various sidewalk and other improvements to provide more safety and better access for those walking and biking on the island. In this podcast, Forum organizers Michael Cox and Bobbie Morgan explain more about these initiatives and offer a preview of the upcoming forum, which is brought to you by five local environmental organizations: Climate Action Bainbridge, EcoAdapt, Sustainable Bainbridge, Friends of Island Power, and Citizens Climate Lobby. He is moderating the next Climate and Energy Forum discussion on January 17. The Forum – sponsored by Climate Action Bainbridge, EcoAdapt, Sustainable Bainbridge, Friends of Island Power and Citizens Climate Lobby – hosts a monthly series featuring speakers and discussion topics to increase our community's awareness and response. Did you know that half our carbon emissions in Washington State come from the transportation sector? Half of that amount comes from our own personal cars, but the rest of those emissions come from trucks, trains and ferries. So what kinds of changes COULD we make to reduce our carbon footprint? In this podcast, Steve Johnson and Randal Samstag, board members of Bainbridge Island's Climate & Energy Forum, talk about the work of five local environmental organizations -- Climate Action Bainbridge, EcoAdapt, Sustainable Bainbridge, Friends of Island Power and Citizens Climate Lobby -- that are exploring this very question. Their Forum hosts a monthly series featuring speakers and discussion topics to increase our community's awareness and response. This month, the topic is on the electrification of our transportation system. Steve and Randal talk about what we can do to cut these emissions. For example, they highlight the benefits of buying an electric car and getting our local power from a cleaner, renewable source. They also note work already underway to have more electric buses and ferries. Joining this podcast via Skype to talk about the opportunities to improve our rail system, Bill Moyer, co-author of “Solutionary Rail: A Campaign to Electrify America's Rails While Creating Clean Energy Corridors," offers a vision for what can be done in the United States (see link here). For many of us who care about the environment, the current political climate and federal-level actions can be particularly discouraging. As Junot Diaz, a Pulitzer-Prize winning writer, recently said, “There's nothing about our impoverished political systems...that is going to be able to hold us together in the face of the coming storm of climate change. We need a lot more than we have.” Fortunately Diaz went on to say that the solutions will lie in our collective genius: “from the bottom will the genius come --” and indeed, that's exactly what's happening here on Bainbridge Island. In this podcast, Michael Cox, a recently retired climate change advisor of the Environmental Protection Agency, and Dr. Lara Hansen, Executive Director of EcoAdapt and board member of Sustainable Bainbridge, tell us about five local environmental organizations that are coming together to work on climate change: Climate Action Bainbridge, EcoAdapt, Sustainable Bainbridge, Friends of Island Power and Citizens Climate Lobby. Together they are launching the Climate and Energy Forum, a new monthly series that will feature various speakers and discussion topics to increase our community's awareness and consider adaptation strategies for dealing with climate change. The first Climate and Energy Forum will focus on Bainbridge Island's climate assessment study and how it ties to our city's comprehensive plan. The event will be held on Saturday, October 21 from 10:00-11:30am at Eagle Harbor Congregational Church. Speakers will include State Senator Christine Rolfes, Mayor Val Tollefson and EcoAdapt's Lara Hansen.  In this podcast, Michael and Lara also share their personal reflections on environmental stewardship, including what has evolved in the field over the course of their careers. Together they emphasize one central message: how incredibly important and effective local and individual action is, and the difference that Bainbridge Island can make more broadly. Special Election Coverage. In this episode, America Adapts is hosting James Stillwell, Program Manager for Climate Implementation at the University of Maryland, reporting from Marrakech, Morocco from the Cop22 climate change negotiations. Also, I speak with EcoAdapt’s MaryKay Gewiss and Alex Score, on next year’s big National Adaptation Forum. First, I check in with James, who’s in Morocco, following up with his role at the 2016 Paris Climate agreement (previous podcast topic).  We learn what other countries are saying about the climate agreement in light of Donald Trump’s presidential election win.  James seeks to provide a reality check on what happens next. We learn what it might mean if the U.S. exited the agreement; the difficulties involved with such an action; and the rest of the world’s desire to move on even if America does exit the talks.  James also shares his perspective on debating noted climate skeptic, Myron Ebell (available on youtube), the man responsible for the transition at the Environmental Protection Agency. He gives his insight on what Mr. Ebell's approach might be and offers a broader perspective on potential limits to that approach. Finally, James gives his parting thoughts on what Americans can expect from the Marrakech negotiations.  In a major pivot, I then talk with Alex and WendyKay about next year’s National Adaptation Forum in St. Paul, Minnesota, in May.  No matter what the results of the election are, adaptation planners will continue to work and convene and share information on the best ways to adapt to the impacts of climate change.  We talk about previous forums and what to expect at this forum. There are new themes and plenaries topics, looking to expand what sectors would be interested in attending the event.  We share advice to federal employees who may be concerned about their ability to travel under a new administration.  Also, the deadline to submit oral and poster presentations is December 16th, so please hurry if you are considering doing this.  Finally, I end the podcast with an election discussion with Tim Watkins in the Adaptation and Wine Power hour, trying to find ‘silver molecules’ on what a Trump presidency might mean for the adaptation field.  And stay tuned for next week's episode, as Dr. Michael Mann, legendary professor behind the ‘hockey stick’ research, and author of “ The Madhouse Effect”, comes on the podcast.   Finally, yes, most of your favorite podcasts are supported by listeners just like you!  For more information on this podcast, visit the website at http://www.americaadapts.org and don't forget to subscribe to this podcast on Itunes.  Also, follow on Facebook at America Adapts!  Check us out, we’re also on YouTube!

Lara is the Executive Director of Ecoadapt and Jennie is Founder and Principal at Adaptation Insight.  This was the first ‘threeway’ conversation on America Adapts, where we discussed the 5 year anniversary of Jenny and Lara’s groundbreaking book, Climate Savvy.  We learn the origins of the book, and how writing it went hand in hand with the establishment of their nationally recognized group, EcoAdapt.  Their book was one of the first to comprehensively lay out how one adapts to climate change, specifically in the natural resource world.  After digging into the book, we debate,  is the field of adaptation elitist? Is focusing on adaptation taking attention away from mitigating against carbon emissions (we all said no!)?  We also learn if some communities actually mitigate more effectively after they embrace adaptation.  Other topics covered:  the positives and negatives of the failed Cap and Trade bill; is adaptation certification necessary; is “Climate Savvy” still relevant? We also talk about the upcoming National Adaptation Forum next year in Minnesota and what new plenary sessions will be part of the agenda.  And finally we hear Lara and Jennie make an amazing analogy between adaptation and surfing - yes, it makes sense when they explain it, so listen in!   Finally, yes, most of your favorite podcasts are supported by listeners just like you! Years ago, after seeing the Al Gore movie “An Inconvenient Truth” about the significance and impact of climate change, Frank traveled to Toronto Canada to participate with hundreds of other attendees from many nations in an Al Gore “Climate Reality Project” training and workshop.  Years later, as he approached his anticipated retirement, he sought out an idealistic group of professionals known as “Engineers Without Borders”.  Like the better-known “Doctors Without Borders”, the engineers group engages in humanitarian projects around the world. Frank currently serves as chair of the City's ETAC committee of citizen volunteers. Frank notes that ETAC currently has vacancies to fill. An interested Bainbridge resident can apply on the ETAC page of the City's website.  In prior years, ETAC advised the City Council about the multi-year project known as the Shoreline Management Program (SMP). Currently, ETAC is focused on the City's update of the local Comprehensive Plan, and is advising on environmental topics -- like adaptation to climate change -- that should form a portion of the plan update. Frank mentions the upcoming November 18 City workshop, hosted by a scientist and planner from the local nonprofit, EcoAdapt. The subject is adaptation to climate change and what the City's Comprehensive Plan update should say about the City adapting to climate change. In this podcast, Frank provides several basic scientific facts about the evidence of climate change and its significance. He also discusses some hopeful new alternatives that are emerging in solar and wind energy. From BCB... http://bestofbcb.org/cafe-007-lara-hansen-climate-change/ Wondering what you can do about climate change? In this episode, BCB host Miles Schneiderman joins Lara Hansen, chief scientist and executive director of the non-profit Eco-Adapt organization, to discuss ways in which the Bainbridge Island community can adapt itself to the realities of climate change.  Lara is a Bainbridge Island resident and a Sustainable Bainbridge board member. She has worked for the EPA and the World Wildlife Fund, and serves on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.  During her conversation with Miles, Lara offers examples of ways in which Bainbridge residents can think about climate change issues in the context of our island's features -- such as our local development patterns and vulnerability in some shoreline areas to rising sea levels -- and mentions ways in which an awareness of climate change can be integrated into the current efforts to update the city’s local comprehensive plan.  They also talk about the failure of governments to address climate change, the need for adaptation on the part of local administrations, and Lara’s optimism for the future.  Join them for this informative, 25-minute chat and find out how you and your city can take a stand against a phenomenon that is, in Lara’s words, “everybody’s problem.” To learn more about Lara and her work, visit www.ecoadapt.org and www.sustainablebainbridge.org.   Credits: BCB host: Miles Schneiderman; BCB audio editor: Barry Peters; BCB social media publishers: Chris and Diane Walker
