For nearly two decades we have been inviting men to embark on an emotional growth mission, not merely a sexual purity mission (as good as that is). But what is an emotional growth mission and what are the challenges and possible stumbling blocks to emotional growth? In this episode, Stephen and I define the emotional growth mission and share over 10 thoughts and ideas that could stunt this mission. To get started, or keep going, on your emotional growth mission, watch the 7-part Emotional Training for Men webinar series at Bebroken.org/etm-webinar. When we think of winning as getting to 11 first and losing as when our opponents get to 11 before we do, we rob ourselves of the benefits that can come from score losing a game. The only way we grow as pickleball players is when we are pushed to do so - this often means losing in terms of the score in a game or match. Take advantage of these growth opportunities by focusing on what you can do to improve as opposed to just the L that you get after that "loss." In the riff, we get into what it means to compete. What is the right bar for you to set for yourself when you are out on the pickleball courts. We chat about her journey from living the life most dream about, but still feeling empty and walking away from millions in order to find what was missing. We also talk about the importance of mental and emotional training, what contentment really means, and how you can drive your life from a place of inspiration and empowerment rather than from fear and unworthiness. ParentingAces - The Junior Tennis and College Tennis Podcast
Welcome to Season 9, Episode 2, of the ParentingAces Podcast! This week, we are discussing how to help junior players with the all-important mental and emotional side of tennis. Our guest is long-time high school coach and author Peter Scales. Teaching a young player how to hit forehands and backhands is something many great coaches can do. However, also teaching them how to problem-solve and stay calm and focused is a bit tougher. Peter Scales seems to have found a successful approach to helping his players develop these skills while enjoying the journey. One his biggest messages to his players is giving your all every time you set foot on the tennis court. Peter discusses how he reinforces that lesson and how he explains its value as a bigger Life Lesson. He also shares tips on how we parents can help our children in this area. Peter mentions a couple of great books in this episode. On Episode 106 of The Tennis Files Podcast, I spoke with tennis coach and positive youth development expert Dr. Peter Scales about the keys to improving our mental and emotional abilities so that we can become better tennis players. Dr. Scales has written a fantastic new book, Mental and Emotional Training for Tennis, which dives into the top principles we must develop in our junior players so that they can not only be great tennis players, but also great people. Dr. Scales is the head JV tennis coach for girls and boys at Parkway South High in Manchester Missouri, and has been there since 2008. He received his Doctorate in child and family studies from Syracuse University. Dr. Scales is also a USPTA-certified tennis teaching pro and is certified as a Double-Goal Coach by the Positive Coaching Alliance. He is internationally recognized as one of the world’s foremost authorities on positive youth development, has conducted research studies in more than 30 countries, and published more than 200 scholarly articles chapters and books. On the show, you'll learn the three critical pillars to mentally and emotionally developing a great tennis player, the importance of improving vs. winning, how note taking will take your game to the next level, why you should feel more during matches instead of thinking, and much more! I hope you enjoy this podcast episode about mental and emotional training for tennis with Dr. Scales and find it helpful! Let us know what you think about it by leaving a review!
