As the weather warms up (any day now), the culinary scene often turns up the temperature as well — and that's definitely the case on this very stuffed episode.Taking things chronologically, we're less than a week away from the start of Downtown Dining Week, which has been treating diners to deals at some of Milwaukee's top restaurants for nearly two decades. This year's event runs from May 29 to June 5 and offers discounts for lunch ($15 or $25 per person) and dinner ($35, $45 and $55).With 29 eateries participating, we're once again spoiled for choice. That's why we decided to share a couple standouts to get you started:For your $15 lunch, consider Central Standard Crafthouse & Kitchen and the Café at The Pfister. At the $35 dinner level, Flourchild Pizza and Doc's Commerce Smokehouse both jumped out at us.Jumping to the $55 dinner class, Bacchus and Aria at Saint Kate have enticing menus.Because we're a full-service podcast, we don't stop at mere recommendations. We also include some pro tips in this episode, one of which is to reserve early because the prime slots on Friday and Saturday fill up fast. You'll have to listen for the rest.Speaking of the rest, here are the oh-so-many things we talk about on this one:Summerfest and Northcott Neighborhood House have added a ticketed tasting event called “A Taste of Juneteenth” to the festival's first Saturday (June 21).Pabst Blue Ribbon has collaborated with NY-based cheesemaker Yancey's Fancy on a beer-infused cheddar cheese. The EsterEv team is making the best of a flood situation by taking the restaurant's food on the road for a series of pop-up dinners.Ann put together a profile of ElevAsian co-founder Erik Kennedy for her other gig with Milwaukee Magazine. The Ivy House will host the annual Botanical Battle Royale featuring Wisconsin's top bartenders June 1.Nationally acclaimed food-truck brand Cousins Maine Lobster will bring their renowned mobile presence to Milwaukee this June.

It's easy to imagine that a new collection of Climate Change poetry from around the Pacific could be overwhelmingly a picture of doom and gloom. But what the four Kiwi editors of No Other Place to Stand have achieved, is a balance of the angry and the philosophical, the sad and the satirical. One of the editors, Canterbury poet Rebecca Hawkes, talks to Lynn Freeman about the collection's range. The other editors involved with No Other Place to Stand are Jordan Hamel, Erik Kennedy and Essa Ranapiri. It's published by Auckland University Press.

Fonterra, who burn the coal, can't keep doing it. They say they're trying to transition away, why don't they actually do that a bit quicker?” LISTEN ABOVE

In Erik Kennedy's second poetry collection, Another Beautiful Day Indoors, he pinpoints both the weirdnesses of contemporary life but also many harsh realities we can't afford to ignore. The Otautahi Christchurch poet is a master at titles. "The Please Stop Killing Us and Destroying Everything That Sustains Us Society", "Nineteenth-Century Road Rural Road-Builders" and "Notes Towards a Definition of Essential Work"... Erik covers a lot of ground. Even the poems that are technically magic realism feel uncomfortably within the realm of possibility. As he tells Lynn Freeman, many address one of the issues that most concerns him - climate change. Another Beautiful Day Indoors by Erik Kennedy is published by Te Herenga Waka Press.

There has always been a problem with racism and othering towards the AAPI community here in the United States, but there has been a massive uptick in the number of incidents involving hate crimes and attacks since the beginning of COVID. Many of these individuals being targeted are Americans, born and raised in this country. How did we get to this point of having so much hate towards our brothers and sisters in our communities? And why are people pointing the COVID-finger at them?On this episode of The GoGedders Podcast, Richie is joined by three Milwaukee community members to have a candid conversation about the Anti-Asian movement that has swept the country during the COVID-19 pandemic. We are joined by: Erik Kennedy, a returning GoGedder who is a community leader at Advocate Aurora; Alexa Alfaro, co-founder of Meat on the Street; and Shary Tran, who works for Amazon as the Executive Program Manager Diversity and Inclusion. Climate activists fighting against the development of an airport in Tarras pretended to die in front of Christchurch city councillors at a meeting on Thursday.Christchurch International Airport Ltd (CIAL) announced the purchase of 750 hectares for the project in July.CIAL is 75 per cent owned by the council through its holding company, Christchurch City Holdings Ltd (CCHL).The protesters attended the city council's finance and performance committee meeting dressed in black and carrying grave markers.Speaking for Extinction Rebellion Ōtautahi, David Goldsmith said it was hard to believe a new airport was being mooted in the middle of a climate emergency."No amount of sustainability greenwashing can hide the fact that increased flight capacity will mean increased emissions. Our elected representatives owe ratepayers an explanation for how this project can possibly be consistent with the council's declaration of a climate emergency."Sara Campbell, also with Extinction Rebellion Ōtautahi, said the proposed airport development raises issues of equity and climate justice."Worldwide, 1 per cent of the population is responsible for 50 per cent of aviation emissions."The controversial development has ruffled feathers with some locals in Tarras and with Queenstown mayor Jim Boult.
