The Funeral Portrait's Lee Jennings on Arena Rock, the song “Dark Thoughts,” and Dealing with SadnessAfter a year of spending 290 days on tour, the success of the album Suffocate City, and a lineup change, Lee Jennings of The Funeral Portrait has arrived at something rare: clarity. Recorded before their performance at the Lenovo Center in Raleigh, Jennings opens up about learning to stop running from hard emotions, why he's letting the fans own "Stay Weird," and how a decade of grinding finally gave the band both the songs and the stage presence for arenas.--Bands To Fans: Grow your fan base in just one hour a month and never deal with social media again.
Rex Heuermann told the therapist working with his family that the dark thoughts started in high school. He knew they weren't healthy. He couldn't name what they were. But he knew something inside him wasn't right. He said he started reading books about death — one in particular called Death Scenes, filled with images of mutilated bodies, severed limbs, pure carnage. That's what was feeding his mind during the years when most teenagers are figuring out who they want to be. For Rex, sex and violence were merging into something that would eventually become unstoppable. He said one thought fed another fed another, deeper and deeper, until it consumed him. He said he couldn't put the brakes on it. He said his outlet was to kill. The Peacock documentary gave the world something no courtroom or police interrogation ever would have produced — extended therapy sessions with one of the most methodical serial killers in American history. Rex described a four-day kill cycle. He timed his body dumps with a stopwatch. He built his kill room in the bedroom where he grew up. And John Douglas — the FBI profiler who wrote Mindhunter, a book Rex himself referenced in his planning document — called him a malignant narcissistic sadistic psychopath and said he believes there are more victims. Psychotherapist Shavaun Scott joins me to dissect what the documentary revealed about Rex Heuermann's psychological development — from the adolescent origins of his violent fantasies to the question Douglas raised that hangs over this entire case: did Rex really stop at eight?Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Taking care of our mental health as Christians is such an important part of our walk with God. Even though it's not always talked about, Scripture teaches us how to navigate heavy thoughts, find peace, and lean on Him in every season.
Do you ever think, “I can't keep doing this”… and then immediately feel ashamed for thinking it?If you're a cancer caregiver carrying thoughts you would never say out loud, this episode is for you.In this final installment of our four-part emotional series, The Things You Don't Say Out Loud, we go to the deepest layer of caregiving: the quiet, 2 a.m. thoughts. The ones that feel too honest. Too scary. Too revealing.Thoughts like:Sometimes I want to run away.I'm scared of what's coming.I don't know who I am anymore.I miss who I used to be.I'm grieving someone who's still alive.I can't keep doing this. These thoughts do not make you a bad caregiver. They make you human.Cancer caregiving often comes with emotional exhaustion, caregiver burnout, anticipatory grief, compassion fatigue, and identity loss. And yet, many caregivers feel they must filter their truth sorting the “acceptable answer” from the real one every time someone asks, “How are you holding up?”The cost of that silence adds up.In this episode, we explore:Why “dark” caregiving thoughts are normalThe emotional toll of suppressing caregiver stress and fearAnticipatory grief and grieving someone who is still aliveCaregiver identity loss and missing who you used to beWhy thoughts of escape are a pressure valve—not a planA simple self-preservation exercise to release shameYou are not your worst thought. You are not the sentence you whisper in the dark.If you're navigating caregiving for a loved one with cancer, living in scan-to-scan anxiety, or quietly questioning how much longer you can carry this weight, this episode will help you feel seen. You don't have to pretend here.

You're not alone if you have tough, scary, horrible thoughts after ending a wanted pregnancy, terminating a wanted pregnancy, having an abortion for medical reasons. When you've lost a baby in pregnancy after a horrible prenatal diagnosis, of course not all your thoughts are cheery and light. In this episode I talk about some hard thoughts you may be struggling with, and a safe space you could join if you'd like someone to hold you through it.The thoughts that keep you up at 3am after TFMR aren't talked about in regular grief spaces. They're too raw, too complex, too misunderstood. But having these thoughts doesn't make you a monster… it makes you HUMAN.In this solo episode, I share 5 of the toughest thoughts TFMR parents carry, from hoping your baby would die naturally to realizing there's no safe time in pregnancy. These aren't easy to hear, but if you've had them, you need to know you're not alone and you're not broken. We hold these thoughts together because that's the only way they become bearable.Special holiday support package with a 1:1 session AND "Peace of Mind: Audio mindfulness program for TFMR parents" here: https://www.thetfmrdoula.com/holiday-supportSTART 1on1 SUPPORT NOW:

It's great to reconnect with the guys from The Funeral Portrait. All the boys came by: singer Lee Jennings, guitarists Cody Weissinger and Caleb Freihaut, with bassist Robert Weston, and drummer Homer Umbanhower. Their album Greetings From Suffacate City is about to turn one on September 13th, and it's been a whirlwind year for the boys. From a tour with Five Finger Death Punch and Marilyn Manson, to this summer's tour with Ice Nine Kills. Before their show locally, they swung by the station to speak with me about everything TFP. You can watch the conversation in the link above. I met the guys for the first time last year as we visited Eloise Insane Asylum. You can hear the audio that was captured here. New Music From The Funeral Portrait "A little baby bit...we have less than a handful of stuff" was how Caleb described the progress on new music from the band. He said that they've been pounding the road so hard they haven't had a chance to start on anything new. "We have a small amount, but what we have is exciting." He went on to say it has to be bigger than "Greetings". Lee chimed in, "It has to be next-level because of the tours we've done." He said they're playing to so many new people each night that new fans are discovering the album. Working With Ivan Moody on "Holy Water The song 'Holy Water' was released as a single pre-COVID. When they went to re-release the song earlier this year, Ivan Moody from Five Finger Death Punch told the guys he wanted to be on the track. "It just so happens that Ivan liked the song. And he wanted to be on it. It was kind of a magical, weird moment of him being "I want to help this band out. I like them. They're cool, they're different, they're young." Kind of like a torch passing moment, and it just worked." The guys were nice enough to bring their guitars, so they busted out two songs for us. Their next single is "Dark Thoughts" and "Holy Water". They also talked about how welcoming the INK band and their fans have been to them. And get this, they're heading off on a European tour this fall. I want them to take me with them!! The boys have had an amazing year, and I wish them nothing but the best moving forward! I'm a fan!

Moving into a new apartment is supposed to be an exciting time, but for one person, it became the start of an unnerving nightmare. What began as subtle, unexplained occurrences—an odd cold draft on a warm day, strange noises in the middle of the night—soon escalated into a terrifying presence that seemed intent on taking over not just the apartment but the occupant's mind. As days turn to weeks, dark thoughts start to creep in, thoughts that don't feel like their own. The cold in the apartment isn't just physical; it's emotional. It's psychological. This story chronicles the slow and insidious infiltration of an unseen entity, one that chips away at the mental and emotional state of its target until they're left questioning their sanity. Can an apartment be haunted, or is this a case of an individual's inner demons taking shape? And when the entity begins to manifest in more aggressive ways, can it be stopped before it drives its victim to the edge?

“Men aren't emotional.” “Men are more logical than their female counterparts.” “Men don't cry.” These are all things you've heard whether they've been directed at you or not. But the reality paints a different story. Men are emotional. But that's not to say that we ought to let ourselves be led by our emotions alone. Dr. Ethan Kross understands this well as a man who researches how we, as humans, both feel and react to those feelings. Today, we talk about how to deal with intrusive thoughts, how to address the dark thoughts we often experience, what it actually means to “control” your emotions, how to become more emotionally fit, and how you can regulate your emotions – even the “negative” ones – so they don't regulate you.

Send us a textEnjoy this conversation with Andrew Peterson, one of Alex and Susan's favorite artists, singer/songwriters, and authors. Do you have a favorite Andrew Peterson song? Send us a text and let us know which one!ABOUT ANDREW:For more than twenty years now, Andrew Peterson has been about the business of quietly changing lives in four-minute increments. In the city of Nashville where music is an industry in the same way fast food, generic greeting cards, and bumper stickers are industries, Peterson has forged his own path, refusing the artistic compromises that so often come with chasing album sales and radio singles and creating instead a long line of songs that ache with sorrow, joy and integrity, and that are part of a real, ongoing, human conversation. In 2019, Andrew celebrated the 20th anniversary of his Behold the Lamb of God project with an anniversary tour and brand new album recording.Andrew is also the award-winning author of The Wingfeather Saga, a four-book fantasy adventure series for young people. He is also the Executive Producer of The Wingefeather Saga animated tv series by Angel Studios (The Chosen). Andrew's second nonfiction book, The God of the Garden: Thoughts on Creation, Culture, and the Kingdom, released in October of 2021, following his 2019 memoir, Adorning the Dark: Thoughts on Community, Calling, and the Mystery of Making. In 2008, driven by a desire to cultivate a strong Christian arts community, Andrew founded a ministry called The Rabbit Room, which led to a yearly conference, countless concerts and symposiums, and Rabbit Room Press, which has published over thirty books.Andrew and his wife, Jamie, have been married for 29 years and have three children, Aedan, Asher, and Skye. In his spare time Andrew keeps bees, builds dry stack stone walls, gardens, draws, and sleeps. Thanks for listening to the Embodied Holiness Podcast. Do you think it's uncool to be excited? Artist Yungblud wants us to marvel at the world; it's life-affirming to be properly enthusiastic about stuff. In this chat, Fearne and Yungblud talk about why we need to be done with being cool and distant. Instead, they share how to make sure you're not dulling yourself down or putting filters on your real character. Yungblud wears his heart – and his pain – on his sleeve, and explains why sharing dark thoughts can be a beautiful thing. Social media, he says, has helped us be more fearless because there will always be a tribe somewhere who will accept us. Plus, how did Yungblud change the way he plays gigs when he realised loads of his fans are socially anxious? You Need To Exist is published by Happy Place Books, and it's out on August 15th.
