California is facing a growing crisis as wildfires become more frequent, intense, and devastating. In the face of the catastrophic wildfires in Los Angeles this month, youth climate activists there are sounding the alarm. Local activists from the Sunrise Movement's LA chapter made headlines last week by staging a takeover of the Phillips 66 refinery, demanding accountability from the fossil fuel industry for its role in driving the climate crisis. On this episode of Terra Verde, host Fiona McLeod speaks with Suzie Hicks, also known as “the Climate Chick,” and Nico Gardner Serna of Sunrise LA. We discuss the connections between the LA fires and the fossil fuel industry, climate justice and education, and their fight for a livable future. Suzie Hicks is an award-winning filmmaker, author, and television host. They specialize in climate and environmental communication for kids of all ages. Their show, Suzie Hicks the Climate Chick teaches kids about climate change and empowers children and their families to care for the earth and themselves. Nicolas Gardner Serna is a community organizer and political strategist working at the intersection of economic and climate justice. As Chapter Coordinator of the Sunrise Movement LA, Nico works to build powerful campaigns to take on corporate polluters. He is currently leading an effort to address orphan oil wells in LA. Australian police arrested 170 climate activists over the weekend after their floating blockade briefly disrupted activity at one of the world's largest coal ports. The fleet of kayaks, paddle boards and inflatable boats blocked the entrance to the Port of Newcastle, which exports millions of tonnes of coal each year. Police said on Sunday evening 156 adults and 14 youths had been arrested and charged with offences including 'disruption of a major facility'. Australian correspondent Steve Price says shipping was temporarily paused as the group blocked at least one major vessel from entering the port. Jusper, a small-scale farmer and agricultural engineer from rural Kenya, presents a compelling case for why fossil fuels are crucial for Africa's development. From energy production to agriculture, Jusper breaks down how access to fossil fuels could revolutionize the continent and lift millions out of poverty. Prepare to have your assumptions challenged as Jusper reveals shocking statistics about Africa's energy consumption compared to the West. Did you know that an average American uses more energy in 19 days than a Ugandan does in 1-2 years? Or that 90% of sub-Saharan Africa's energy comes from burning biomass like cow dung and crop residue? Jusper explains why solar and wind aren't enough to industrialize Africa and why fossil fuels are essential for everything from fertilizer production to mechanized farming. But it's not just about energy and agriculture. Jusper also tackles the thorny issues of international policy, neo-colonialism, and the role of organizations like the IMF and World Bank in Africa's development. He offers a unique perspective on the "Just Stop Oil" movement and even proposes a tongue-in-cheek "sustainable internship program" for climate activists. Maurer identifies strategies of resistance uniting the region by analyzing an extensive multilingual archive of decolonial Pacific art in French, Spanish, English, Tahitian, and Uvean, ranging from literature to songs and paintings. She shows how Pacific nuclear survivors' stories reveal an alternative vision of the apocalypse: instead of promoting individualism and survivalism, they advocate mutual assistance, cultural resilience, South-South transnational solidarities, and Indigenous women's leadership. Drawing upon their experience resisting both nuclear colonialism and carbon imperialism, Pacific storytellers offer compelling narratives to nurture the land and each other in times of global environmental collapse. The Rich Zeoli Show- Hour 3: Daniel Turner—Founder & Executive Director of Power the Future—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to discuss his latest editorial for Fox News, “Biden Wants 50,000 New Climate Activists and the Consequences will Be Devastating.” Turner writes: “With the national debt racing toward a record $35 trillion, President Joe Biden released his budget proposal Monday, including an eye-popping $8 billion for a ‘Climate Corps' program. Enthusiastically supported by Green New Deal architects New York Democrat Representative Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez and Massachusetts Democrat Senator Ed Markey, Biden's Climate Corps would hire 50,000 government workers annually by 2031 with the explicit yet vague mission of ‘tackling climate change.' Any guesses which political party these workers will be supporting? The budget proposal made good on Biden's pledge during the State of the Union to triple the number of workers from the original 20,000 he proposed last fall.” You can read his full opinion piece here: https://www.foxnews.com/opinion/biden-wants-50000-climate-activists-consequences-devastating Tracy Beanz—Editor-in-Chief for UncoverDC.com & host of the “Dark to Light” podcast—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to breakdown the Supreme Court oral argument in Murthy v.
