This week we explored Greenville, South Carolina and were utterly impressed--gobsmacked, actually--by its charming vintage architecture mixed with modern, vibrant growth. We checked out the Liberty Bridge and Falls Park, and took an actual real estate tour specifically for those seeking to relocate to the evolving city formerly known as the Textile Capital of the World. It was there we discovered Greer - a town with great amenities just 20 mins from downtown Greenville. Between the GSP airport, brewery scene, James Beard nominated restaurants and real estate options, this town is now on the Skiptown map. STOP! ‘Hammer' time. Padraig ‘Pody' McCrory knows a thing or two about stopping people in their tracks. He's a quiet man but he has been making some serious noise in recent years, knocking out a string of opponents, primarily in his home city of Belfast, and building up a passionate gang of supporters who followed him to Germany last year where he upset the odds to defeat Leon Bunn and claim the IBO world light-heavyweight title. Next up he's going to headline Feile An Phobail at Falls Park, a few hundred metres from where he grew up. “The Cinderella Man” is how Michael Conlan describes him and here, dad of three McCrory talks about growing up in the aftermath of The Troubles, how boxing broadened his horizons, overcoming a debilitating speech impediment and staying hungry as a 35-year-old veteran. And a lot of times that means just going out and standing beside them.  I mean, when I was in the Parks Department, sometimes it meant helping somebody put a bench together.  And they would talk to you in that process and you'd kind of hear the good, the bad, and the ugly.  But a lot of times it was the most valid of the truth that you were hearing. WENDY GROUNDS:  Welcome to Manage This, the podcast by project managers for project managers.  Thank you for joining us today.  My name is Wendy Grounds, and joining me in the studio is Bill Yates.  We want to take a moment to specially say thanks to our listeners who reach out to us and leave comments on our website or on social media.  We love hearing from you, and we always appreciate your positive ratings and reviews on whichever podcast listening app you use. Our guest today is Megan Young.  She currently serves as the Assistant Manager to the City Manager for the City of Greenville, South Carolina.  Prior to joining the City Manager's Office, Megan was the Parks and Grounds Administrator for the City of Greenville.  Megan is a certified project management professional and certified park and recreation professional. During her time in the PRT department, Megan led the implementation of the Cityworks program as a work and asset management system.  She managed large and small-scale infrastructure projects and was integral in the successful reaccreditation of the Greenville Zoo in 2020.  And she's going to tell us a bit about that project today. BILL YATES:  I'm excited about this.  We are going to talk about the zoo.  We're going to talk about spider monkeys.  We're going to talk about parks and recreation.  And I've got to go ahead and just let you know, too, this is near and dear to my heart because I went to Furman University, which is in Greenville, South Carolina.  Now, I graduated in 1980 [mumbling] something. WENDY GROUNDS:  It's a while back, yeah. BILL YATES:  Yeah, yeah, yeah.  And Greenville at that time was just not cool.  It is super cool now.  And a lot of it is because of Megan and the team there at the City of Greenville and what they've done.  They've got an amazing Liberty Bridge and Falls Park area.  There's the Swamp Rabbit Trail which my wife and I have actually ridden bikes on and walked along.  It's just beautiful.  So Megan's going to talk to us about a number of parks and different projects that they've done.  But this is, again, it's special to me because she's talking about an area that is a rich part of my history. WENDY GROUNDS:  Yeah, that's really cool.  I've driven through Greenville.  I've never stopped there, but I think after this podcast I'm definitely going to take a stop next time I plan on driving through. BILL YATES:  Definitely. WENDY GROUNDS:  Hi, Megan.  Welcome to our podcast. MEGAN YOUNG:  Hi,

FOR years I used to gather up acorns and chestnuts and hazelnuts and little sycamore seeds and all manner of other seeds. My growing methods are fairly basic. I collected as many as I could and then planted them out in pots or growbags and let nature do the rest. I worked on the general assumption that if I planted a lot there was a greater chance that I would harvest a lot. I'm not talking of hundreds of seeds, by the way. Pocketfuls picked up on walks. The Falls Park has plenty of oak and chestnut trees. There are native trees also in the Waterworks, Colin Glen and Woodvale. Acres of broadleafs. And in all of our forests. The British Prime Minister's country residence at Chequers has great rowan trees. I got heaps of towan berries there.  They are always a wee bit trickier – like the tenant in Chequers. The seeds are contained in the little red berries but well worth the trouble. Unlike the tenant in Chequers.Campfire tales of a great manLAST week I was part of an online panel discussion on the life and times of escaped slave Frederick Douglass, his time in Ireland in the 1840s and the relevance of his message of hope and equality in today's world. The conversation was part of an ambitious and successful one day conference organised by the Irish Echo in New York. The event – The Big Irish Campfire (the title alone attracted me) – showcases Irish American organisations across the USA. All of the discussions were short – 30 minutes – so there was no time to bore those contributing or watching. The Echo staff – comhgairdheas to all involved – ran a tight ship.

Cold Feet: Adventures in Matrimony by Wedding Officiant Sonita M. Leak January 29, 2018 Greenville, SC Cold feet. You would think that if any part of a couple had cold feet, they would express it in a major way before the ceremony, right? Well... in my experience as a Wedding Officiant here in South Carolina, I've come across a couple or two that experienced a few setbacks AFTER their ceremony with me. This is how one went down. So, a few years ago, I received an email from one half of a Beaufort County, South Carolina couple. Email correspondence went on back and forth with this male for quite some time. The story? He and his fiance were going to drive to Greenville on a specific date to get married, in short ceremony at the location of my choosing. So, when the time came for the couple to come to Greenville, I was met with odd questions regarding ceremony attendance, pricing and some other things. No biggie. I didn't think anything of it. On the day of the ceremony, the couple met me in Downtown Greenville, at Falls Park at the Reedy River. I'd even made the couple a keepsake, because they said they wanted one with the ceremony. Not a problem. Couple married, license paperwork signed, marriage license waiting in my hands to be mailed to the Beaufort County's Probate Court. So what happens? On Sunday night before the next day Monday's mail drop off of the couples' license, I receive a call from the Groom, yes, the same one I'd been communicating with for not just a few weeks, but for a FEW MONTHS. He says, “Don't turn the marriage license in!” Blank Stare. My reply, “You mean to tell me you don't want me to turn in the marriage license?” "That's correct, ma'am." May I ask why? Well, see, well, me and my girl wanted to invite more people to the ceremony and well, some of the family members got upset that we got married and they weren't there. “Oh, okay.” Even MORE confusion. So, a few days later, the Bride calls, “You turned our marriage license in, right?” MASS CONFUSION NOW. Wait, you mean to tell me that you guys wanted me to GO AHEAD and turn your paperwork in?” I eventually came to find out that the couple were involved in a disagreement between one another, it had absolutely NOTHING to do with family members not being able to attend. For those notaries public who decide to marry couples along with your commission duties, ensure that with each and every couple you join together in matrimony, TURN IN THE MARRIAGE LICENSE NO MATTER WHAT! After ceremony and filling of the paperwork, you are required to turn in the paperwork within 15 days thereafter. *The message at the end applies to State of South Carolina Notaries Public who marry couples. If you are hearing this and are in another state, your notarial and marriage rules may be different. This was today's Adventure in Matrimony.
