The South Carolina State Legislature is back in session and we've already got some bad bills. Jonathan, welcome to the program. Hope you're doing well. Happy New Year. Thank you, Charlie. Appreciate you having me on. 00:23 Already bad bills. I'm going to start off with one that is kind of weird with me. This whole thing about casino gambling here in South Carolina, whenever we see casino gambling, a lot of other bad things come along with it, doesn't Yeah, I think that's pretty clear to everybody. You can just look and see what's happened in other states. I will say that it's truly a South Carolina way to do it to say we're going to have casinos 00:52 and we're going to create a brand new government agency to decide which casinos get to be here and basically create a total state-run monopoly around that. mean, whether you're coming at this from a social perspective that we shouldn't have casino gambling at all, or whether you're coming at it from a free market perspective of the government shouldn't decide which companies get to come here, the bill is just horrible either way you look at it. 01:18 So this new gambling commission, who would that be comprised by? uh Well, the details are in the bill. And like I said, you know, it's not necessarily a done deal by any stretch. I mean, in many cases, let's see, uh like so many boards and commissions that govern different things, it's a hybrid thing between the 01:47 Right, the governor and legislators would make the appointment. Okay. Yeah, like so many other things. that's a system that has proved its failures over and over again in South Carolina. It really does. Tell us about the uh privilege tax of 15%. The privilege tax? uh you know, that's, what would the justification be for that? that 02:14 Yeah, mean, it puts a 15 % on gross gaming revenue. We're talking about potentially a lot of money here. Where would that money go? Well, the current amendment to the bill seems to be earmarking that for at least a portion of that fund to the counties that presumably would be affected by the locations of these casinos. 02:40 um Arguably, that funding would go towards infrastructure and emergency services and law enforcement and healthcare and whatever else. Yeah. All the usual suspects, right? Right. In your list of the bad bills, one says the income tax hike disguised as a tax cut. How does that work? Yeah. If you're going to cut the income tax, what we would expect is to see the percentage of income tax 03:09 decrease over time or all at once like we could just zero it out today and we'd be fine. uh But that's not what they did. They totally reinvented the income tax structure so that some people are going to pay more and some people are going to pay less. And from the state's perspective, overall, it's going to be less income tax revenue coming in. That is a bizarre way to do it. And it's definitely a proposal that a policy proposal that comes from 03:39 you know, those in the ivory tower of the Capitol, uh you know, not looking at this thing from the taxpayer perspective. I mean, they tried to pass a so-called tax cut that would actually raise taxes on 60 % of South Carolinians. Why can't they get this figured out? Well, it's a great question. I mean, I've always said, Charlie, that, uh you know, tyrants are never willingly going to give up one iota uh or even one penny. 04:07 of your money or control over your life, has to be forcibly taken from them by we the people. They're never going to give up money willingly. And so, you know, it seems to me like uh that that's an element at play here. ah You know, in all seriousness, if they if ...

And that's leaving a few facets of his identity out. Well, here in South Carolina, our governor, Henry McMaster, has decided to go along with RFK Junior and president Trump and actually introduce new restrictions on SNAP benefits. Yeah. And I think this is a good idea. I really do. Governor McMaster announced today that South Carolina will soon impose new restrictions on how low income residents can use their supplemental nutrition assistant program benefits. Now here, what is the keyword that we're looking at there in the snap nutritional. Nutritional. Now, folks, I love my butter fingers. I love my Reese's peanut butter cups, but I know that they are not nutrition. They are just there is nothing nutritious about it. No doctors ever said, you know, Charlie, I think you you need to eat more Butterfingers. I'd you need two you need two more full sugar Pepsis and, and and more Butterfingers, and that'll get you that'll get you rider's ring. It's not nutrition. It is a treat. It's a luxury. In a post on eggs, McMaster said he plans to issue the executive order directing the Department of Social Services to impose common sense limits on snap purchases. He said America is getting healthy, and South Carolina will do her part. In the next few days, I will issue an executive order directing the Department of Social Services to place common sense limits on purchases using SNAP benefits formerly known as food stamps. Now right now, about 580,000 South Carolinians get, SNAP benefits according to the Department of Agriculture. The executive order comes several months after a bill aiming to limit SNAP purchases. Here we go. Gotta go right back to the state legislature on this one and go, hey, guys. You're the problem. You're literally the problem here in South Carolina. These Republicans in Columbia, there was a bill aimed at limiting SNAP purchases, and that failed to advance in the South Carolina house. Charlie James talking with former Lieutenant Governor Andre Bauer about his run to challenge with Senator Lindsey Graham From members of the senate. We do have, senate primary coming up next year, and we got some folks running against Lindsey Graham. One of those people is former lieutenant governor Andre Bauer who joins us right now. Andre, welcome to the program. Hope you're doing well, sir. Charlie j, thank you for having me on, brother. So let me ask you. What was, what made you pull the trigger on this decision? You know, Charlie, I thought about it back in '19. I've just continued year after year, decade after decade, watched Lindsay put Washington policies and foreign priorities ahead of, I think, South Carolina and America First priority. And after just pushing to get our president reelected, I've just watched how people in South Carolina feel like they are not, looked after. They don't feel like they have a seat at the table. They feel like they sent a president to Washington for change, but they feel like they got a senator that's working against them every chance he's gotten. I mean, he's been against Trump. He said nasty things about Trump. He ran against Trump in 2016. And so we're not seeing you know, I don't know how many decades you get before taxes have gotta go down. We gotta do something at the border. We've gotta quit fighting all these wars overseas. I mean, we expect action. And year after year, he hasn't had an opponent that could fund a a real campaign against him, and so it's always been funding. And so I'm hoping people will go to andrebauer.com and get involved. It's an opportunity to take our country back, to really get somebody in there to spot for the taxpayer. You know, when I was lieutenant governor Charlie, the the senate's caucus or the senate continued to propose tax increases. For eight years, I ruled every single tax increase out of order. That's why your car tax until I left state at $300. They only changed it after I got out of office and raised it on people of South Carolina. I'll do the same thing in Washington, Charlie. I'm not gonna let them continue to raise taxes, stand out of control. Look. Lindsay took office with term limits. He committed to term limits. Those have long since gone. They were twelve years. He committed to balanced budget. He also told us he was gonna act like a conservative. Well, how can you go from having a budget less than 5,000,000,000,000 when you took office to 37,000,000,000,000 now and say, you're for less government. You're up there fighting the good fight. Look. Fool me once. Shame on me. You fooled me so many elections that the voters have had enough. They're fed up. I'm fed up. I've got four children that in somewhere in in the age range, we're trying to teach them to be good spot responsible stewards of their dollar. But we got a government that doesn't take anything to give billions of dollars to countries all around the world when we can't pay our own bills. It makes zero sense. That's why. He's a globalist. He's a he's more concerned about the world than he is about Conway or Pickens or Greenville or Spartanburg or or Reed. We want somebody looking after our counties. Look. He doesn't even show up except every now and then around election time. The rest of the time, he's traveling the world. He went with Menendez, who's now in federal prison, and traveled all over Europe on your dime. On the taxpayer dime, he traveled Europe with senator Menendez and his wife went to Paris. I mean, average hardworking taxpayers don't get to do that, and they sure don't think their elected officials should be doing that. Shame on him. We need to change. It has always been a staffer until today, and he has a, just a just a voice thing that you leave a message. It is pathetic that in a, quote, unquote, conservative state, our two conservative senators, quote, unquote, are, I should say air quotes, but, are missing in action. Yeah. They talk that they support president Trump, but they're yellow. They don't support him. They don't care about the average taxpayer like us. They don't care that our bills are gonna go up drastically. They just don't. Yeah. You're right about that. They they really don't. If they did, they would be doing something about it. I appreciate it, John. Thank you. And doing something about it means being more vocal. I the the senate is not for the weak. You might be able to get away with it in the house. I mean, there, you're pretty anonymous. There's a oh, I I think there's a 80 or is she 88? I think there's an 88 year old woman in the congress that nobody's ever heard of that wants to run for reelection again, but her staff is like, yeah. You might die. Yeah. No. No. No. No. You've got you've got a lot of knitting to catch up on. You don't need to be doing that. But but, again, you can get you can be relatively anonymous in the house. It takes work to be anonymous in the senate. I mean, that takes real work. Now Padilla was pretty good at being anonymous. Tim Scott's pretty good at being anonymous. He'll crawl out when, you know, the time is right, but there you go. Well, New York City. How are you guys feeling about this thing? How are you guys feeling about Zoran Mamdani, the radical socialist Muslim who is running to be the mayor of New York. He won the primary in New York City against Andrew Cuomo and several others. They had this, they had that rank choice voting thing, in the primary there, and, and he won. He won that election. And he's a guy that wants to do 200,000 low income units in New York. He wants to make the grocery stores city owned. He wants to no cash bail. He wants to, in effect, legalize prostitution, legalize drug use, have open safe injection sites. Again, did I mention no cash bail? No cash bail. He wants to, just his policies are a mess, and they would hurt the city of New York drastically. And they've already done that. He's already starting to hurt New York. In fact, there are some luxury real estate brokers, and these folks are saying and that is a good key. That is a real good benchmark to look at how well some place is doing. Where are your luxury real estate deals? Well, now wealthy New Yorkers are looking to leave New York after Zoran Mondami's primary win. New York City, as we know it, is never gonna be the same if this man is elected mayor. It's gonna go just like New York, Detroit did after the nineteen sixty seven riots, hanging by a thread. Ma'am Domi would drive the wealthy out. He would drive out the financial sector, drive out the real estate sector. He would drive the cops out. He would drive the Jews out. He would destroy small business in New York, and they would have deserved it. New Yorkers would have deserved it for allowing this man to be mayor. President Trump said it's finally happened. Send us a textIn 1992, South Carolina featured a heated Senate race that featured two very experienced and respected political figures in incumbent senator Ernest Hollings and his challenger former Congressman Tommy Hartnett. It would be the toughest challenge for Hollings in decades because not only was Hartnett a formidable challenger but the political dynamics in South Carolina were changing fast as the state grew more conservative and more Republican. But Ernest Hollings was a towering political figure. He had been at the forefront of political crusades to feed the hungry, keep the military strong, protect manufacturing jobs, and stop the massive amounts of money flowing into political races. Holling's fit the bill that had often been how South Carolinian's described liking their politicians, "Ernest Hollings fought hard for what he believed in, even when he was wrong." That always appealed to people in the state even when they disagreed with the Senator. His opponent in the race was former Representative Tommy Hartnett, the former congressman from the South Carolina First District, which included Charleston S.C. where the Senator was from too. Hartnett was a champion for fiscal responsibility, supported term limits for Congress, and fought to keep the budget under control. He had arrived in Washington D.c. as part of the Reagan Revolution in 1980 and served for six years in Congress before deciding to come home and run for Lieutenant Governor. After nearly, two and half decades in public life, first as South Carolina State House member, he lost the race for Lieutenant Governor and this was his attempt at a comeback. This was an exciting race between two formidable men. In this episode, we will look at the careers of both men and their thoughts on Government and what they both feel is the problems our nation at the time faced. Many of those issues still plague us now. In the end, we will focus in on the legendary career of the incumbent, a man considered a giant of American Politics both at home and in washington D.C. Send us a textIt is just days before the Republican National Convention and the campaign of George H. W. Bush is losing, badly. It appears unfocused and seems to be reacting to events instead of controlling them or leading them. The worsening economy has the argument for change being made by Bill Clinton stronger with each passing day. Finally, Ross Perot decided to withdraw and did so on the last night of the 1992 Democratic National Convention delivering for Governor Clinton an enormously huge audience to listen to his acceptance speech. One of the problems is that George Bush is without two of his most trusted political advisors. Lee Atwater, the native South Carolinian, who had helped guide Bush to the Presidency had died of brain cancer, and James Baker, his former campaign manager, had moved on to the job of Secretary of State. Bush needed them badly and he finally went to James Baker and asked him to take over the campaign for that final stretch. James Baker was, as James Carville once said of him, "the Joe Montana of American Politics" (Montana is a widely heralded Super Bowl MVP Quarterback of the San Francisco 49ers) Baker arrived in Washington D.C. when his friend George Bush had moved from Texas in the early 1970s.  He got a job working for President Gerald Ford in 1975. He then moved over and almost pulled off one of the greatest comebacks in political history moving Ford from 33% points down to only losing by one in 1976 to Jimmy Carter. He took Bush from an asterisk in the polls to almost wrestling away the 1980 nomination from Ronald Reagan, he then helped guide the Reagan Presidency in its first term, was Secretary of State to Bush as they soft landed the Cold War, and now Bush was calling him back in to pull off yet another miracle and get him re-elected to the Presidency. As you will see, it almost worked, if not for the Sinister forces of a Special Prosecutor. Here is the story of James Baker stepping back in to take over the 1992 campaign of George H. W. Snow and snow maintenance trucks ambience — This is the January 5,6 storm over Northern Virginia. Listen to the gut-punch storm that forced us to spend another week with our children.  Yes, I know that sounds terrible, but we had already been back to work, and these little free-loaders were "bored." Never mind, they were somehow ****** bored the day after Santa Claus' capitalistic ride of philanthropy.  And we had made it to the end. The children were going back to school in two days.  And then the universe dumped an unimpressive amount of snow on us. I'm not sure you could impress a South Carolinian with 〜seven inches of snow.  Look — obviously, I understand closing school Monday. I even got closing on Tuesday; we had freezing temperatures, and there were still ice patches. Wednesday, OK; take Wednesday too, for safety's sake, never mind that the roads were mostly clear. The kids were all figuring out new daredevil **** to do in the snow. I saw one kid jump off a roof. I get it, school administrators. A snow day is an unexpected break from our rotten-*** children. But Thursday felt like payback for the last ten years of scant snow closures.
