Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for May 6, 2026 is: flamboyant flam-BOY-ant adjective Someone or something described as flamboyant has a very noticeable quality that attracts a lot of attention. Such a person or thing is often strikingly elaborate or colorful in their behavior or display. // Reality television attracts millions of viewers for its depictions of flamboyant, larger-than-life personalities living equally flamboyant lifestyles. See the entry > Examples: “[Helen] McCrory's flamboyant and perfectly drawn portrayal of Polly was the show's real treasure, a steel-willed matriarch unusually attuned to the mysticism of the Shelby family's Romani roots who also served as a ruthlessly pragmatic consigliere. ... McCrory's Polly was so electric that the show remained totally riveting any time she was onscreen.” — Jack Hamilton, Slate, 20 Mar. 2026 Did you know? Associate the word flamboyant with bananas flambé and the word's fiery etymology will be seared in your mind. Flamboyant, which was borrowed into English from French in the 19th century, can be traced back to the Old French word flambe, meaning “flame.” In its earliest uses flamboyant referred to an ornate style of Gothic architecture popular in France and Spain, which featured waving curves suggestive of flames. Eventually, the word developed a more general second sense for anything eye-catching or showy. And of course, flambe is also the origin of the English adjective flambé, which describes food flamboyantly dressed or served with flaming liquor.

In 2016, Pat McCrory ran for reelection as North Carolina's governor on the same ticket as Donald Trump. Trump carried the state, but McCrory lost by just over 10,000 votes out of more than 4.5 million cast. In the decade since, McCrory has watched the Republican Party move in a direction he no longer fully recognizes. This week, he sat down with the Holler to discuss January 6th, HB2 (the so-called “Bathroom Bill”), what Republicans are saying privately that they won't say in public, and whether honest disagreement still has a place in American politics.Join the Holler: https://www.patreon.com/TheHometownHoller

In this episode of the Cory Cast, I'm sitting down with a true pioneer of the Northeast MMA scene, Tamdan "The Barn Cat" McCrory. While many of you know Tamdan from his high-level runs in the UFC and Bellator, we took a deep dive into what his life looks like now that the gloves are (mostly) hung up.We spent the heart of the conversation talking about his role as the head of Broome County Martial Arts. Tamdan shares his philosophy on what it actually takes to run a successful gym and why building a genuine culture is just as important as teaching a perfect armbar. We also explore the profound impact that martial arts can have on a person's mental health and discipline, proving it's about much more than just fighting.Beyond the mats, we touched on the parallels between coaching and fatherhood. Tamdan opens up about the weight of leading by example and the importance of "walking the walk" for both his students and his kids. He has always been one of the most unique minds in the sport, and his insights on transitioning from a professional athlete to a mentor and business owner are something every listener can learn from.Follow Tamdan and check out his gym:Gym: Broome County Martial ArtsInstagram: @thebarncatmma | @bcmainfo------Find this episode on YouTube by searching for "Cory Cast"-----Don't forget to follow, rate, and subscribe!----Instagram: @Frothy_Lawson | Twitter: @FrothyLawson---Thank you to this episode's sponsors:Thur13en
A new boxing year is upon us and a slew of Irish fighters are looking to break those chains and bring home some major titles. Among them is Tyrone titan Feargal McCrory, who's KO'd inactivity once before and is determined to do so again. Since ‘Fearless' last appeared on The Rocky Road, he's fought three times at Madison Square Garden, boxed for a world title in Washington and proved why he's one of the most popular Irish fighters around with his willingness to fight anyone, anywhere and his determination to get up off the canvas and keep marching forward, no matter what. We hear about his next move, the pain that drives him, the snakes that frustrate him behind the scenes, his withering assessment of Josh Warrington and why he's in favour of the Zuffa Boxing move into the sport and why he feels the Ali Act didn't help him, among lots of other themes in another fascinating conversation with one of Ireland's most thoughtful, independent fighters. The foundation of our democracy is the Constitution, a system of checks and balances and the rule of law. But today, those cornerstones are being blatantly disrespected by a presidential administration attempting to consolidate power at all costs..In this episode, host Simone Leeper is joined by Campaign Legal Center litigators Anna Baldwin and Brent Ferguson. They examine the most pressing examples of the erosion of the rule of law, from the politicization of the Department of Justice to the stifling of free speech. Along the way, they highlight how Congress and the courts have failed as effective checks — leaving civil society and citizens to defend constitutional principles — and explore the reforms that could restore accountability, protect the rule of law and strengthen democracy against threats. Timestamps:(00:05) — Why is free speech under attack in the U.S.?(03:50) — How is political opposition being falsely linked to political violence?(05:38) — Why is deploying federal troops in U.S. cities a threat to democracy?(09:50) — How are Congress and the courts failing to check presidential abuses of power?(15:09) — How has the DOJ been transformed into a political tool?(20:17) — Why is the Voting Rights Act no longer being enforced?(21:17) — What's at stake with the DOJ's demand for voter data?(27:27) — How is CLC challenging unlawful executive orders?(32:30) — What reforms are needed to restore checks and balances?Host and Guests:Simone Leeper litigates a wide range of redistricting-related cases at Campaign Legal Center, challenging gerrymanders and advocating for election systems that guarantee all voters an equal opportunity to influence our democracy. She received her J.D. cum laude from Georgetown University Law Center in 2019 and a bachelor's degree in political science from Columbia University in 2016.Anna Baldwin is a member of Campaign Legal Center's voting rights team working to protect the freedom to vote, litigating cases in state and federal courts, from filing through appeal to the Supreme Court. Prior to joining CLC, Anna spent 14 years in the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice. In North Carolina State Conference of the NAACP v. McCrory, Anna led briefing and appellate argument for the United States to overturn a North Carolina law that purposefully restricted voting and registration opportunities for Black voters in violation of Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act. Anna was also a member of the trial team that successfully challenged Texas's racially discriminatory voter ID law. Anna has argued eighteen cases before the federal courts of appeal, including four en banc cases. Previously, Anna was an associate in the Washington D.C. office of Jenner & Block LLP, and clerked for Judge James Robertson on the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, and for Judge M. Blane Michael on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.Brent Ferguson leads Campaign Legal Center's strategic litigation team, focusing on anti-authoritarianism and litigating in all areas of election law. Brent has worked on protecting and improving our democracy for most of his career. At CLC, he has led litigation teams challenging state and federal laws and policies that seek to unlawfully purge voters, limit voter registration activity and otherwise prevent Americans from exercising their constitutionally protected rights. He has authored academic articles on election law and other constitutional issues in the Washington Law Review, the Cornell Journal of Law & Public Policy, the Emory Law Journal Online and elsewhere. Before coming to CLC, Brent was senior counsel at the National Redistricting Foundation, where he helped develop strategy for federal and state redistricting litigation. Tune in here to this Tuesday's edition of the Brett Winterble Show! We’re joined by former North Carolina Governor and former Charlotte Mayor Pat McCrory to talk about the federalization of a recent case and broader concerns around public safety and city leadership. In a serious but steady conversation, McCrory reflects on how small issues — like the lack of enforcement on public transit and the growing presence of homelessness — have slowly chipped away at the city’s stability. Drawing on his experience as mayor, he recalls implementing curfews, targeting repeat offenders, and rallying community support to confront crime head-on. He stresses that the business community shouldn’t sit back, but should be vocal in holding local government accountable. While he expresses concern about the city’s direction over the last 12 to 15 years, McCrory also reaffirms his deep love for Charlotte. His message is clear: it’s time for common-sense leadership, stronger standards, and a willingness to step up before the damage becomes irreversible. Tune in here to this Tuesday's edition of the Brett Winterble Show! Brett kicks off the program by talking about Election Day and the anticipation around what the results might bring. While he acknowledges the political side of things, the conversation quickly shifts toa reflection on the state of the culture and the presence of something he’s not afraid to name: evil. In a calm but serious tone, Brett unpacks how it operates quietly, how it feeds on doubt and division, and how it shows up in our daily choices. But this isn’t just a warning — it’s a call to stand strong. He encourages listeners to hold onto truth, integrity, and hope, even when the noise of the world says otherwise. Whether Republican or Democrat, Brett’s message is clear: now is the time to build, not tear down. With steady conviction, he reminds us that we’re not alone in the fight — and we are not going to fold. Lisätietoja:Taina Laajasalon esittely THL:n sivuilla.Tainan jaksossa mainitsemia tutkimuksia ja muuta tietoaACElife-tutkimusprojektin verkkosivut. In 1985, Charles McCrory found his wife, Julie Bonds, brutally murdered in their Andalusia, Alabama, home. Just two small marks on her arm—misrepresented in court as a definitive “bite mark”—became the sole forensic evidence used to convict him for her murder.A forensic odontologist, famed for testifying at Ted Bundy's trial, claimed the impressions matched McCrory's like a fingerprint. Yet decades later, that same expert fully recanted the testimony, acknowledging the scientific consensus now recognises bite mark evidence as unreliable “junk science”.With no blood, no DNA, and hair in the victim's hand that didn't match McCrory's, his conviction rested entirely on this flawed forensic interpretation. Over 40 years later, even as two independent forensic dentists testified that the so called bite mark was never human, Alabama courts repeatedly denied him a new trial, judging that his lengthy imprisonment still stood, and that procedural hurdles outweighed modern scienceIn July 2024, the U.S. Supreme Court refused to review his case. Justice Sotomayor warned that wrongful convictions like his, based on “faulty science,” are startlingly common and urged state and federal lawmakers to enact stronger safeguards to prevent miscarriages of justice. One Minute Remaining LIVE in Melbourne get your tix now Join the One Minute Remaining Jury via Appl + HERE and get OMR early and ad free for as little as $1.69 a week!Become a Jury member on Patreon and find us on Facebook here. In this episode of From the Crows' Nest, host Ken Miller is joined by returning guest Duncan McCrory from the Freeman Aerospace Institute at King's College London to unpack concerns of a Chinese escalation in the Pacific to reunification with Taiwan — and what this move could mean for the United States and alliances around the world.McCrory says that defense experts have focused on 2027, known as the “Davidson Window,” following reports from the U.S. Intelligence Community that Chinese President Xi Jinping has ordered its military to be ready to invade Taiwan in 2027. The People's Liberation Army (PLA) is the largest military force in the world with 2 million active-duty soldiers. McCrory says a successful invasion of Taiwan from China could weaken alliances and have devastating economic impacts on the United States… but a miscalculated intervention could introduce direct conflict with one of the biggest superpowers in the world. To learn more about today's topics or to stay updated on EMSO and EW developments, visit our homepage. We also invite you to share your thoughts, questions, or suggestions for future episodes by emailing host Ken Miller at host@fromthecrowsnest.org.

Today's case is a special coverage at the request of Crystal McCrory Jones sister Jana, who is advocating right along with the rest of the family for Crystals death to be properly investigated. On February 9, 2023 Crystal was found deceased in her bed with a pillow over her head, and a gun in her hand with her finger pressed against the trigger. The cause of death was quickly ruled a suicide despite the family providing many red flags to the police for why Crystal's husband should be looked into. The family is asking for help in getting a proper investigation opened. Join Patreon here to binge bonus content! This month, as Louisiana Eats marks our 15th anniversary, we're relishing the opportunity to bring you some favorite moments from our archives. We begin with our 2011 interview with the late civil rights activist, Dr. Rudy Lombard. He talks about his role in the 1960 McCrory's lunch counter sit-in and what motivated him to write his seminal 1978 book, "Creole Feast." Then, we revisit our 2011 tribute to one of the chefs featured in that tome: Clarence "Buster" Holmes. British jazz drummer Barry Martyn and Chef Susan Spicer both share memories of their friend and mentor. Next, we hear again from the late Michael Mizell-Nelson, who spent his career studying the experience of working-class New Orleans. We bring you the second half of our streetcar ride with Michael in 2010, as he shares the history of public transportation during the era of Jim Crow. To end our show, we spotlight our 2011 conversation with local icon Mildred Covert, who taught the world how to cook Creole and Cajun while keeping kosher. For more of all things Louisiana Eats, be sure to visit us at PoppyTooker.com.
When Crystal McCrory is found dead in her home from a gunshot wound, the police rush to call it a suicide, investigators do little-to-no investigating, and the final autopsy report is a ludicrous patchwork of holes and errors. In this fiery and detailed monologue, the host shares firsthand experiences and long-held concerns about systemic voter fraud, focusing on North Carolina and Arizona. Drawing from years of reporting, he alleges widespread use of "ghost voters," fraudulent registrations, and last-minute vote dumps in Democrat-controlled precincts — particularly in Charlotte — that flipped election results. He recounts private conversations with former Governor Pat McCrory, explaining how fears of being labeled racist prevented meaningful voter roll cleanups, ultimately costing McCrory his seat. The episode also celebrates a recent legal victory in Arizona, where 50,000 illegal immigrant registrations were ordered removed from voter rolls — including 36,000 who voted in 2020. With direct attacks on the media, election officials, and the DOJ, the host argues that illegal votes have deeply undermined electoral integrity and calls for sweeping reforms before 2024.
This week Nick Averwater continues his conversation with Faith Serna, Assistant Band Director and Color Guard Coordinator at Highland High School in Highland, Arkansas. The Highland School District serves several small towns in north central Arkansas, and Faith grew up in the district. In the last episode, Faith talked about starting, or improving, color guard in a marching band, but in this second part of the conversation we'll switch directions and learn more about her first job in music education as band director in a very small school district in McCrory, Arkansas, a town of 1,500 people, located 70 miles northeast of Little Rock. We'll hear about the challenges she faced early on as the high school band director, and how she was able to more than triple the size of the program in the three years that she was there. Our conversation was recorded in the Fall of 2024. We've broken it up into two episodes, and this is part two.

The search for answers continues, and there is never a lack of inconsistencies, like errors in official documents, misleading statements from those in power, and more evidence that raises even more questions. Crystal McCrory Jones' family just wanted answers…and dignity. But in the weeks after her death, they were met with hostility, public accusations, and a system that seemed more interested in shutting them down than hearing them out. In part three, Crystal's sister is denied access to her ashes, accused of stealing funeral funds, and dismissed by the very sheriff who had promised transparency. Why was the time of death listed at 11:00 AM? Why does the sheriff now claim that time is meaningless? And why was critical evidence ignored? Please sign the petition in support of reopening the investigation into Crystal's death: https://www.change.org/p/reopen-investigation-into-death-of-crystal-mccrory-jones Connect with Jana / Stay up to date on Crystal's case:Twitter/X: https://www.twitter.com/janaglautigar Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/justiceforcrystalmccroryjonesTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@justiceforcrystalmccroryFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/3074535702847225 Jana's Link Tree: https://linktr.ee/justiceforcrystalmccroryjones Justice Denied - A Sister's Fight for Justice by Jana Guyewski-Lautigar: https://tinyurl.com/bdcy6za3 Connect with Paige:BlueSky: reverietruecrime.bsky.social Instagram: instagram.com/reverietruecrime TikTok: tiktok.com/@paige.elmore Facebook: facebook.com/reverietruecrime Twitter/X: twitter.com/reveriecrimepod Intro and Outro by Jahred Gomes: https://www.instagram.com/jahredgomes_officialBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/reverie-true-crime--4442888/support.
In part two of Crystal McCrory Jones' story, her siblings, Jana and Dane, and her sister-in-law Julie meet with the sheriff for a conversation that raises even more questions than it answers. As they lay out inconsistencies and evidence that doesn't sit right, the sheriff listens but also dismisses, deflects, and downplays. He openly calls Crystal's husband a chronic liar, yet seems unwilling to consider that those lies might actually extend to the most important truth of all. This meeting will make you feel the frustration of a family fighting to be heard and a system that may be hearing them, but not truly listening. Please sign the petition in support of reopening the investigation into Crystal's death: https://www.change.org/p/reopen-investigation-into-death-of-crystal-mccrory-jones Connect with Jana / Stay up to date on Crystal's case:Twitter/X: https://www.twitter.com/janaglautigar Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/justiceforcrystalmccroryjonesTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@justiceforcrystalmccroryFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/3074535702847225 Jana's Link Tree: https://linktr.ee/justiceforcrystalmccroryjones Justice Denied - A Sister's Fight for Justice by Jana Guyewski-Lautigar: https://tinyurl.com/bdcy6za3 Connect with Paige:BlueSky: reverietruecrime.bsky.social Instagram: instagram.com/reverietruecrime TikTok: tiktok.com/@paige.elmore Facebook: facebook.com/reverietruecrime Twitter/X: twitter.com/reveriecrimepod Intro and Outro by Jahred Gomes: https://www.instagram.com/jahredgomes_officialBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/reverie-true-crime--4442888/support.

On February 9, 2023, police conduct a welfare check at a home in a neighborhood of Oak Grove, Louisiana. Inside the residence, they find a 43-year-old business owner, wife, and mother dead from a gunshot wound. The woman's husband is devastated, as is the rest of the victim's family. After a speedy investigation, the shooting is soon ruled a suicide. But when the woman's family uncovers glaring holes in the investigation and learns that corners have been cut, things start to look extremely questionable, and it emerges that not everyone close to the victim has been adequately eliminated in the rush to declare the death a suicide. In episode 345, Jac and Alexis detail the heartbreaking suspicious death of Crystal Deniece McCrory Jones, the many lingering questions focusing on the local sheriff's department's involvement, and why Crystal's loved ones continue to fight for a full and thorough investigation into her death.
