Professor Paul Bishop, Ph.D. returns to us from Scotland to discuss C.G. Jung's essay, Flying Saucers: A Modern Myth of Things Seen in the Skies.
Strange sightings have been reported in the sky throughout history. After the Second World War, however, the appearance of UFOs became prominent in culture. Swiss psychiatrist and psychoanalyst Carl Jung studied the UFO phenomenon for more than a decade until his death in 1961. He wrote a book entitled Flying Saucers: A Modern Myth of Things Seen in the Skies, where he saw UFOs as a living myth for modern man, stating that we have the golden opportunity of seeing how a legend is formed, and how in a difficult and dark time for humanity a miraculous tale grows up of an attempted intervention by superior or “heavenly” beings. Jung's field of interest is the human reaction to the phenomena, an effort to understand the complex working of our interior life, as this is revealed through the UFO phenomenon. UFOs are visionary rumours whose basis is an emotional tension having its cause in a situation of collective distress or danger, or in a vital psychic need – shedding light on the psychic compensation of the collective fear weighing on our hearts. UFOs have become a saviour myth, as we have projected on them a hope, an expectation. They express the symbol of totality represented by the mandala, the archetype of the Self, whose chief role is in uniting apparently irreconcilable opposites and is therefore best suited to compensate the split-mindedness of our age, bringing order and regulation to chaotic states.
In this episode, Brynn Anderson and I listen to a very rare recording from one of the most influential humans of the modern age...Carl Jung. Considered to be the father of modern psychology, Dr. Jung brought many of the most popular concepts related to psychology into the collective consciousness. He gave us a new awareness that strengthened the understanding of ourselves, and so much more.. An incredible interview taking place in 1957 in Switzerland.. Drop In!Carl Jung Bio:Carl Jung (1875 - 1961) was an early 20th century psychotherapist and psychiatrist who created the field of analytical psychology. He is widely considered one of the most important figures in the history of psychology. Carl Gustav Jung was born in Switzerland in 1875 to Emilie Preiswerk and Paul Jung, a pastor. Because of his father's faith, Jung developed a keen interest in religious history, but he settled on the study of medicine at the University of Basel. After he completed his medical degree, Jung joined the staff at Burghoelzli Clinic in Zurich, Switzerland as an intern to Eugen Bleuler, where he explored the unconscious mind and its related complexes. He also traveled to Paris to study under Pierre Janet in 1902. In 1905, Jung was appointed to the faculty at the University of Zurich where he worked until 1913.Jung married Emma Rauschenbach in 1903. The couple had five children and remained married until Emma's death in 1955, although Jung's extramarital affairs were extensive. Jung died in Switzerland in 1961. Jung sent a copy of his book Studies in Word Association to Sigmund Freud in 1906, and Freud reciprocated by inviting Jung to visit Vienna. Their friendship lasted until 1913, at which time they parted ways due to a difference in academic opinion. Jung agreed with Freud's theory of the unconscious, but Jung also believed in the existence of a deeper collective unconscious and representative archetypes. Freud openly criticized Jung's theories, and this fundamental difference caused their friendship and psychological views to diverge. Jung traveled throughout the world to teach and influence others with his psychoanalytical theories. He published many books relating to psychology, and others that seemed outside the realm science, including Flying Saucers: A Modern Myth of Things Seen in the Skies, which examined and dissected the psychological significance of UFO sightings. Jung's work embodied his belief that each person has a life purpose that is based in a spiritual self. Through his eastern, western, and mythological studies, Jung developed a theory of transformation called individuation that he explored in Psychology and Alchemy, a book in which he detailed the relationship of alchemies in the psychoanalytical process. In the 1950s, Carl Jung expressed frustration at the impenetrability of the UFO mystery, the "strange, unknown, and indeed contradictory nature" of this "ostensibly physical phenomenon" with "an extremely important psychic component." Throughout his writings on the topic, he marvels at the impossibility of coming to even preliminary conclusions. Fastforward to 2023, after a series of astounding disclosures on the part of qualified government people, and we have as much reason to be baffled as we ever had. In this episode, Phil and JF discuss the mercurial, tricksterish fact of ortherwordly things seen in the sky. 202# UFO files | The 1561 Nuremberg celestial phenomenon A mass sighting of celestial phenomena or unidentified flying objects (UFO) occurred in 1561 above Nuremberg (then a Free Imperial City of the Holy Roman Empire). This view is mostly dismissed by skeptics, some referencing Carl Jung's mid-twentieth century writings about the subject while others find that the phenomenon is likely to be a sun dog. Allen H. Greenfield also known by his ecclesiastical name Tau Sir Hasirim, is an American occultist, ceremonial magician, UFOlogist, writer, editor, and Gnostic Bishop of Ecclesia Gnostica Universalis who resides in Atlanta, Georgia. His book The Story of the Hermetic Brotherhood of Light is one of the few sources of information on this subject. His book The Compleat Rite of Memphis is a comprehensive history of an Egyptian Rite of Freemasonry, and he edited an authorized, annotated edition of the work Liber Thirty-One by Charles Stansfeld Jones. He was elected and consecrated a Bishop by the Holy Synod of the Neopythagorean Gnostic Church in 1986. In 1987 he was extended recognition as a Bishop within the Gnostic Catholic Church - Ordo Templi Orientis (OTO) and was consecrated in New York in November 1988. His episcopal title "Tau" is sometimes abbreviated as "T" and prefixed to his legal name, and thus he may also be referred to as T Allen Greenfield. A former editor of the OTO journal LAShTAL, Greenfield has more recently become a critic of the Order's upper management. In February 2006, he called for their resignation and stepped down from all managerial duties in protest, issuing a strong criticism of the current Outer Head of the Order, William Breeze. A past (elected) member of the Society for Psychical Research and the National Investigations Committee on Aerial Phenomena (from 1960), he has twice been the recipient of the "UFOlogist of the Year Award" of the National UFO Conference (1972 and 1992). He is a Borderland Science Research Associate (BSRA), and has conducted on-site UFO and alien abduction investigations in Brooksville, FL, Pascagoula, MS and Brown Mountain, NC. His book Secret Cipher of the UFOnauts was reviewed by Robert Anton Wilson in his book Everything is Under Control. This review discusses how Greenfield builds on the principles established in Carl Jung's 1952 book, Flying Saucers: A Modern Myth of Things Seen in the Sky. What does Bigfoot mean to you? Why does he pop up all over the place? Why is Bigfoot such an iconic symbol of cryptozoology, and why is he shared among people of every culture around the world? Darwin gathers up the courage to open up and talk about the bane of his cryptozoological interests! But this is not an attempt to bash Bigfoot, no, on the contrary! We explore the psycho-social significance of Bigfoot as an archetype in the collective unconsciousness, how much it may tell us about the human experience, and how it is a symbol shared among all people worldwide regardless of their cultural or historical context. Unfortunately, this is not the Bigfoot discussion many are expecting, or are used to. Many in the cryptid community will deny it, and many will not be willing to face the ultimate truth: That cryptozoology is a social science! ====================== Send us suggestions and comments to tracingowlspodcast@gmail.com Follow us on Instagram @tracingowls Intro sampled from "Something strange lurks in the shadows" by Francisco Sánchez (@fanchisanchez) Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com ====================== FURTHER READING: Indiana Mud Mermaids and Extended History of Van Meter, Iowa | Campfire: Tales of the Strage and the Unsettling | Jordan Heath | Bigfoot Society Episode 45 - The Ozark Howler | Campfire: Tales of the Strange and Unsettling Jungian archetypes | Wikipedia Loren Coleman, Patrick Huyghe (1999): Field Guide To Bigfoot, Yeti, & Other Mystery Primates Worldwide. In today's episode we are going to be looking at a very interesting lecture of Manly P Hall's on the topic of a small book that Carl Jung published titled "Flying Saucers: A Modern Myth of Things Seen in the Sky." Here we will be exploring the psychology of Man, the symbolism of UFOs, and the astrological progression of the Great Year. Not to be missed! For the video version of this lecture (with extra notes), see my Youtube page, which you can find via my website: alexsachon.comLast note: this lecture is intended to be paired with the 3-part docu-series I put together on the topic of the "Secret Space Program". For more info on that, see my website. Thanks for listening! - Alex
He is also a past President of the Atlanta Science Fiction Organization (ASFOII), and the editor of the periodical The Paraufologist. Wir besprechen zunächst über einen Text von C.G. Jung über Ufos in moderner Malerei aus dem Büchlein "Flying Saucers - A Modern Myth of Things Seen in the Skies".
Ever wonder where the banner image on our website and social media pages comes from? It's a composite image based mostly from a 16th-century woodcut depicting a UFO sighting over Nuremberg, in modern-day Germany. As well as producing a captivating illustration, the sighting is a good example of an early-modern "wonder-sign," long before the term UFO ever entered the lexicon, and before anyone suspected extraterrestrial culprits.
