In the quiet elegance of 1880s Cheltenham, a spectral presence stirred unease in a grand old family mansion in the centre of town. The ghost—described as a tall, veiled woman in black—appeared repeatedly to the daughters of the Despard family, moving silently through the house and vanishing without trace. Witnessed by multiple family members over several years, the haunting became one of Britain's most documented supernatural cases, thanks to the efforts of the newly founded Society for Psychical Research, who jumped at the chance to study a haunted house, first hand. He reported on his study of the séance communications, purportedly dictated by spirits that called themselves The Humble Ones, in The Twentieth Plane: A Psychic Revelation (1918) and Birth through Death: The Ethics of the Twentieth Plane: A Revelation Received Through the Psychic Consciousness of Louis Benjamin (1920).Co-founding and leading Entityseeker Paranormal Research & Teachings in 2003, her experiences and knowledge has lead to researching and co-creating a unique investigative program called 'Teaching the Living' and subsequently has been featured on and hosted numerous specials and TV shows (The Discovery Channel, "A Haunting", "Haunted Hospitals", "Paranormal 911", "My Haunted Hometown", T+E, Destination America, The Travel Channel, CBC, CTV, Planete+, TLC, Crime + Investigation, Celestial Tiger networks in China, and COAST TO COAST AM). Her programs are now practiced in 3 different countries and a part of numerous social work and psychology secondary education courses in Edmonton. Morgan subsequently received the award from the City of Edmonton for Outstanding Service in 2008 and graduated from The AZIRE: The Alvarado Zingrone Institute for Research and Education two years in a row, receiving two graduating Certificates of Distinction in parapsychology. Morgan can also be heard on her podcast, SUPERNATURAL CIRCUMSTANCES, with co-host/co-creator Mike Browne (Dark Poutine), which delves into the mysterious, the spiritual, and the fascinating things in our universe. As host and creator of the sold out dinner galas, video productions, as well as in-depth walking classrooms that give people hands on experience with the investigative field in both psi and cryptids, Morgan has brought her unique and paradigm shifting programs to television, conferences, comic expos, theatres, workshops, fundraisers and more. Her deep personal experiences with the paranormal and spirituality connect with audiences on multiple levels, and she aims to leave people with the fundamental message that we are not alone, that we are all spiritual beings living a physical life, and that we have the power to create our reality by changing our paradigms. Using the fire arts as a demonstrative tool, Morgan's lessons with the elements bring yet another creative edge to capture the audience's imagination, on top of the stunning visuals, music, and evidence that make up her incredible presentations.https://www.entityseeker.ca/https://supernaturalcircumstances.com/https://psi-encyclopedia.spr.ac.uk/Click that play button, and let's unravel the mysteries of the UNTOLD! In the quiet corners of Enfield, London, where the streets are lined with ordinary lives, there stood a house that whispered secrets into the night. It was the autumn of '77 when the Hodgson family moved into 284 Green Street, unsuspecting of the shadows that lurked within its walls. Peggy Hodgson, a single mother with four children, sought nothing more than a place to call home. But the house, with its creaky floors and silent stories, had other plans. It wasn't long before the ordinary turned eerie, where toys didn't just play but seemed to live, and furniture moved with a will of its own. This wasn't the tale of a ghost, but something far more unsettling, a poltergeist that made its presence known through the laughter of the unseen, the cold touch of the unknown, and the voice of a child speaking in tones of the grave. The Hodgson children, especially young Janet, became the unwilling conduits for this spectral force. Neighbors heard the screams, the police witnessed the impossible, and investigators from the Society for Psychical Research captured the chaos on tape. What unfolded was a saga of terror where reality bent, leaving behind questions that haunt to this day. Here begins the story of the Enfield Poltergeist, a chilling reminder that sometimes, the darkest mysteries reside in the most unsuspecting places. This week's extra episode takes a look at the intriguing world of paranormal experiments, starting with the Philip Experiment conducted in the 1970s by Dr. A.R.G. Owen and the Toronto Society for Psychical Research. The experiment aimed to test whether a fictional ghost could be created through the collective belief of a group. By inventing a character, Philip Aylesford, and holding séances, the group triggered seemingly paranormal phenomena, such as table movements and knocking sounds, which were interpreted as evidence of psychokinesis. The results sparked a debate between believers in the power of the mind over physical reality and skeptics who saw the phenomena as products of subconscious influence. The episode also covers the Rice Experiment, which explored the concept of thought forms and their impact on physical objects. This experiment involved a group of people attempting to manifest paranormal activity through concentrated belief. Additionally, the story of Matthew Manning, a British man known for his psychic abilities, is explored, highlighting his purported ability to influence electrical systems and create spontaneous healing effects. These experiments shed light on the complexities of human consciousness and belief, raising questions about the connection between the mind and the paranormal. The BOOKBY US A COFFEEJoin Sarah's new FACEBOOK GROUPSubscribe to our PATREONEMAIL us your storiesFollow us on YOUTUBEJoin us on INSTAGRAMJoin us on TWITTERJoin us on FACEBOOKVisit our WEBSITEResearch Links:https://www.parapsychology.org/the-philip-experimenthttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philip_experimenthttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matthew_ManningSarah and Tobie xx"Spacial Winds" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 Licensehttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. In this prize-winning essay for the 2021 Bigelow Institute for Consciousness Studies essay contest, Dr. Ruickbie examines the evidence for the survival of consciousness after death (“life after death”). Initially skeptical, he found that there was sufficient evidence from a wide variety of sources, including apparitions, reincarnation, near-death experiences, after-death communication, and premonitions, that met the contest's criteria of being “beyond reasonable doubt.”Such claims are often dismissed as contravening the laws of physics; however, Ruickbie takes the ground-breaking approach of organizing the evidence as eye-witness testimony to the "block" universe (in which past, present and future exist at the same time) described by Albert Einstein and Hermann Minkowski; and finds further support in the latest theories and findings of Quantum Physics for what Ruickbie calls “timetanglement” and “cloud consciousness.” Using a novel framework inspired by Charles Dickens, this is a readable and convincing account of a complex and highly debated subject.BioDr Leo Ruickbie, FRHistS, FRAI, ARPS, PhD (Lond), MA, BA (Hons), ACIQ, Associate of King's College London, is a Visiting Fellow in Psychology at the University of Northampton, where he is a member of the Exceptional Experiences and Consciousness Studies research group.Described as a ‘leading historian and sociologist of the paranormal' by the Daily Express newspaper (print) and ‘a leading expert on the paranormal‘ (express.co.uk online), Dr Ruickbie specialises in controversial areas of human belief and experience, sometimes called ‘exceptional human experiences'. A phrase coined by Rhea White in 1990, exceptional human experience is ‘an umbrella term for many types of experience generally considered to be psychic, mystical, encounter-type experiences, death-related experiences, and experiences at the upper end of the normal range, such as creative inspiration, exceptional human performance' (White, 1994:5).Dr Ruickbie is closely involved in the work of the Society for Psychical Research as a member of Council, former Editor of its Magazine and a member of its Spontaneous Cases Committee. Established in 1882, the Society for Psychical Research is the world's largest, oldest and most reputable organisation for the scientific study of what we now call ‘the paranormal'.He is also a Professional Member of the Parapsychological Association. Established in 1957, the Parapsychological Association is affiliated to the American Association for the Advancement of Science. In recognition of his contribution to scholarship sustained over the course of his career, Dr Ruickbie has been elected a Fellow of both the Royal Historical Society and the Royal Anthropological Institute.Dr Ruickbie's PhD is from King's College, London, for his thesis on contemporary witchcraft and magic use, building on research that won him an MA with distinction from Lancaster University. He is the author of several books, all based on rigorous research: Witchcraft Out of the Shadows (2004 and 2011), Faustus: The Life and Times of a Renaissance Magician (2009), A Brief Guide to the Supernatural (2012), A Brief Guide to Ghost Hunting (2013), The Impossible Zoo (2016) and Angels in the Trenches (2018); as well as numerous articles and chapters in scholarly publications.https://ruickbie.com/https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CRMN4D41/ https://www.pastliveshypnosis.co.uk/https://www.patreon.com/ourparanormalafterlife

“Switch me on.”When you think about it, the original Ghostbusters movie captivated a generation in a way that we usually reserve for franchises like Star Wars. Who would have thought that a big budget semi-horror comedy featuring a bunch of Saturday Night Live alums would become the kind of pop culture phenomenon that is still releasing films 40 years later, not to mention a parade of animated series, collectibles, video games, and more? And yet, that's exactly what happened! And perhaps a key part of that appeal was the central piece of equipment that the Ghostbusters outfitted themselves with: the proton pack. Essentially an “unlicensed nuclear accelerator” that they wear on their backs that allows them to “herd” ghosts into the equally fantastic traps (something that will perhaps be the focus of a future episode of Does it Fly?), the proton pack is as striking a visual as Star Wars' lightsaber or Star Trek's transporter. It's far from the only reason Ghostbusters has endured, but the millions of children of the 1980s who turned their school backpacks into ghost-fighting machines can't be wrong! At the heart of Ghostbusters is the fact that our heroes are all scientists, despite their shared interest in the paranormal. In a way, that's not too different from the dynamic of our brilliant hosts, who spend this special, spooky episode of Does it Fly? debating both the science and story logic of this beloved device. You can also watch the latest episode of Does it Fly? on our YouTube page. FURTHER READING Do you want to delve a little deeper into the facts, concepts, and stories Hakeem and Tamara referenced in today's episode? Of course you do! ProtonsYou can't wrap your head around a proton pack without first understanding the proton itself, which is simply a positively charged particle in the nucleus of an atom. Wait, did we say “simply?” No, these aren't that simple at all (note how Hakeem says in this episode that “the word particle can mean different things in different contexts”). Find out why right here.Particle AcceleratorsAccording to Hakeem, the proton pack is essentially a particle accelerator. Let the International Atomic Energy Agency explain them to you far better than we can. But the key here is the concept of the cyclotron, first developed by Ernest Lawrence, and which even existed in a surprisingly portable form (pending energy use necessity, of course).Beta DecayWe admit, this one is tough to follow on its own. Fortunately, there are visual references that help us follow along.Let's just let Hakeem explain how it all ties together: “The Ghostbusters use positrons to power their cyclotron which accelerates their protons so they can use them to capture ghosts.” (phew)The Real Inspiration for GhostbustersTamara brings up how Dan Aykroyd was inspired to pursue the Ghostbusters concept by an academic article from The Journal of the American Society for Psychical Research (which is absolutely real). We are pretty sure that the actual article in question can be read right here!SUGGESTED VIEWING It's almost unthinkable that anyone who has clicked on this episode hasn't seen the original Ghostbusters, which is truly a generational, all-time great movie. There's an entire franchise worth exploring beyond it, though. Here's a quick guide to watching them all in the appropriate order.Ghostbusters (1984) and Ghostbusters II (1989)The two movies that make up the bedrock of Ghostbusters canon. The first, is, of course, self-explanatory. Its sequel was seen as something of a disappointment upon release, but in the years since it's seen a critical re-evaluation from the general public. The first movie belongs to a unique category of high-concept genre comedies of the 1980s, which even had this not spawned a series of movies, a toy line, an animated series, and countless collectibles would have made it pretty unique. Others that played with the formula established here include Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure and Beetlejuice (which we did an entire episode on that you can watch right here).Ghostbusters: Answer the Call (2016)Unfairly maligned upon release for reasons we need not get into here, Paul Feig's complete reboot of the franchise  (it's set in a parallel universe from the first films) is better than you've heard. HoweverGhostbusters: Afterlife (2021) and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (2024)These are essentially the belated Ghostbusters III and IV. As is the case with Ghostbusters sequels, your mileage may vary. For those of you who really want to dig deeper, though, you'd be surprised at just how cool (and even scary!) The Real Ghostbusters cartoon from the 1980s was. In particular, if you're looking for some spooky seasonal viewing, allow us to suggest the first season episode “When Halloween Was Forever” which feels like a genuine Ghostbusters movie condensed down to less than 30 minutes. WANT MORE FROM DOES IT FLY?This isn't our first spooky rodeo, as we recently took a look at Beetlejuice to try and scientifically prove that demonic possession is a thing!Have you seen our awesome exclusive interview with the showrunner of Netflix's Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft yet? The life and times of George Albert Smith are not particularly well known. Despite working for several years as a stage hypnotist and psychic, the owner of a popular pleasure park and then eventually a pioneering inventor and filmmaker, there are few who could reel off a biography based on nothing more than a name. Perhaps even more obscure, however, was his time spent as a ghost hunter for the Society for Psychical Research, which, whilst a relatively short career in comparison, was no less groundbreaking, when he took tenancy of a haunted house for more than a whole year in order to investigate the reported phenomena. After an ominous cliffhanger in part one, we left you wondering, who or... what is Philip and how far would he go to free himself of the small room he was conjured within. In part two, we will dive into Philip's escalation and growth, how the experiment conjured more questions than answers, how he left a lasting impact on the group of eight members who brought him into the world, and other iterations of the Philip experiment that have been conducted. Philip the Ghost was conjured in the fall of 1972 by a group of eight members of the Toronto Society of Psychical Research group in Toronto, Canada. Together, they created a fictional spirit, Philip, and sought to use mental power to conjure his physical spectral being.  The Philip Experiment inspired many other spiritual creations. The Toronto Society of Psychical Research attempted to create Lilith, a French Canadian Spy. Then came Sebastian, a medieval alchemist, and Axel, a man from the future. Experiments similar to Philip have taken place all over the world and there's rumor that The Skippy Experiment, conducted by an Australian team, has procured video evidence that they plan to share with the world. While this topic is intriguing, curious and a little bit unsettling, it leaves us with more questions than answers... what is the paranormal? Are we creating spirits with thought? Can a group spend enough time with one another that they create a group consciousness? How can they extend outward? Are we on our way to creating planet Lanulous? Is any of this real... ? In honor of our seven year anniversary and in honor of creating our very own ghost and haunting attached to our podcast, we are discussing the scientific experiment, Philip the Ghost. Philip the Ghost was conjured in the fall of 1972 by a group of eight members of the Toronto Society of Psychical Research group in Toronto, Canada. Together, they created a fictional spirit, Philip, and sought to use mental power to conjure his physical spectral being. In part one, we discuss the eight members of the experiment, the first year, Philip and his beginnings.  Philip was entirely fictional, but grounded in reality. His story went like this: Philip Isleford was born in 1624, he was an aristocratic Englishman living at the time of Oliver Cromwell. He was married to a beautiful but cold and frigid wife, Dorothea. But the marriage was fraught and loveless… which is why when Philip met the effervescent, Margo, he fell deeply in love with her and brought her home with him… but his decisions led to tragedy and a broken heart. Dorothea accused Margo of witchcraft and Philip watched as his one true love was burnt at the stake… Deeply riddled with guilt, Philip took his own life and was found at the foot of his castle grounds.  Was the group able to utilize this tale to conjure a spirit out of thin air? How powerful is the human mind and group thought? And what happens if you create a spirit that forms a mind of its own, can it be contained? One of the chief proponents of the theory of a coven was the English Egyptologist Margaret Murray in her work The Witch Cult in Western Europe (1921). According to her a coven consists of 12 witches and a devil as leader. The number is generally taken as a parody of Christ and his 12 disciples. (An alternate theory, stressing the Murray view of a pre-Christian tradition of witches, explains 13 as the maximum number of dancers that can be accommodated in a nine-foot circle.) Each member of a coven is said to specialize in a particular branch of magic, such as bewitching agricultural produce, producing sickness or death in humans, storm raising, or seduction. The actuality of covens was also accepted by Montague Summers, a well-known Roman Catholic writer on witchcraft in the 1920s and 1930s, and more recently by Pennethorne Hughes in his Witchcraft (1952, 1965). Many students of witchcraft, however, dismiss the Murray theory of covens as unfounded and based on insufficient evidence. Nonetheless, 20th-century witchcraft groups continue to use the term coven, and reports of coven activity in the United States and Europe are not uncommon.   What is ESP? Extrasensory perception (ESP) is an unproven paranormal phenomenon in which people allegedly receive information about, or exert control over, their environment in ways that don't use the five senses. Also known as "the sixth sense" or "psi," ESP refers to a wide range of purported abilities, including telepathy (mind reading), psychokinesis (moving objects without physical contact) and precognition (predicting the future). ESP violates our understanding of basic scientific principles. Still, estimates suggest that around two-thirds of people in the United States believe in its existence, according to a 2019 study published in Europe's Journal of Psychology. Even in academia, ESP has inspired serious scientific debate. While some psychologists argue that the subject deserves consideration, skeptics point out that the evidence is weak at best, and fraudulent at worst. History of ESP Fascination with ESP is rooted in the spiritualist movement of 19th-century Britain and the United States, according to the University of Canterbury in New Zealand. Members of the fashionable elite would hold séances, in which mediums would attempt to communicate with spirits. By the end of the 19th century, scientists and other thinkers were joining research societies devoted to studying not only communication with spirits, but a whole host of so-called "psychic" phenomena, including telepathy and hypnosis (which, unlike telepathy and séances, is now backed by science). In 1882, the Society for Psychical Research emerged in London, and in 1885, people founded a corresponding society in the United States. (Both still exist today.)

In this classic episode from 2019 I'm talking to Jim Matlock about the book 'I Saw a Light and Came Here: Children's Experiences of Reincarnation' he co-authored with Erlendur Haraldsson. The first two thirds of the book is by Erlendur. He describes cases of children who remember previous lives, mostly in Sri Lanka and Lebanon, and other survival phenomena, such as apparitions and mediumship, that he has investigated over the years. In the last third of the book, James brings in cross-cultural data, new cases and analysis, and thoughts on the meaning of it all. James has worked at the American Society for Psychical Research in New York City and at the Rhine Research Center in Durham, North Carolina. He is presently a Research Fellow at the Parapsychology Foundation. His chief research interests are the history of parapsychology, anthropology of religion, and reincarnation. I teach a 15-week online seminar course on reincarnation research and theory.  I Saw A Light And Came Here is the result of decades of scholarly research and investigations into past-life memories, primarily of children. Erlendur Haraldsson, a psychologist, has over two decades of experience behind him, having investigated some one hundred cases in the field. He worked closely with Ian Stevenson, M.D., of the University of Virginia, who began systematic studies of “cases of the reincarnation type,” but soon broke new ground with psychological studies of children who insist they remember episodes from past lives.Haraldsson invited anthropologist James Matlock to join him because of his thorough familiarity with research around the globe. This book deals with various aspects of past-life memory and attempts to answer the questions that will inevitably come up in the minds of thoughtful readers.Amazon link, https://tinyurl.com/y34n3mhahttps://www.pastliveshypnosis.co.uk/https://www.patreon.com/ourparanormalafterlifeBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/our-paranormal-afterlife-finding-proof-of-life-after-death--5220623/support.

Morgan Knudsen has been involved in the world of paranormal phenomenon for 20 years. Her story began with a great great grandfather, Dr. Albert Durrant Watson, who was the president of the Association for Psychical Research of Canada in 1918, which was one of the first paranormal associations developed in Canadian history. He reported on his study of the seance communications, purportedly dictated by spirits that called themselves The Humble Ones, in The Twentieth Plane: A Psychic Revelation (1918) and Birth through Death: The Ethics of the Twentieth Plane: A Revelation Received Through the Psychic Consciousness of Louis Benjamin (1920).Visit Morgan's official site here: https://www.entityseeker.ca/Co-founding and leading Entityseeker Paranormal Research & Teachings in 2003, her experiences and knowledge has lead to researching and co-creating a unique investigative program called 'Teaching the Living' and subsequently has been featured on and hosted numerous specials and TV shows (The Discovery Channel, "A Haunting", "Haunted Hospitals", "Paranormal 911", "My Haunted Hometown", T+E, Destination America, The Travel Channel, CBC, CTV, Planete+, TLC, Crime + Investigation, Celestial Tiger networks in China, and COAST TO COAST AM). Morgan is also a producer for various podcast and television projects, both national and international. Her work has also been presented at the Rhine Research Center by The Windbridge Institute's president Mark Boccuzzi in 2020 and she is a host and a featured presenter at the Parapsychological Association.Morgan uses her outgoing, tell-it-like-it-is approach in determining haunted locations and creating solutions for the people involved, as well as having hands on experience in both research & education in the field of cryptozoology. Morgan is also a regular contributor to the number one magazine in the UK, HAUNTED MAGAZINE.Morgan can also be heard on her podcast, SUPERNATURAL CIRCUMSTANCES, with co-host/co-creator Mike Browne (Dark Poutine), which delves into the mysterious, the spiritual, and the fascinating things in our universe. Using the fire arts as a demonstrative tool, Morgan's lessons with the elements bring yet another creative edge to capture the audience's imagination, on top of the stunning visuals, music, and evidence that make up her incredible presentations. She visits with Talking Weird to chat about her own Dogman encounters: Experiences that are likely very different from most other encounters that you have heard about. Morgan has a wealth of knowledge and experience in the paranormal and crytozoological spaces, so expect the conversation to travel in all kinds of weird, wonderful, and surprising directions.Morgan is an enthralling guest, you do not want to miss this show!
