In the quiet elegance of 1880s Cheltenham, a spectral presence stirred unease in a grand old family mansion in the centre of town. The ghost—described as a tall, veiled woman in black—appeared repeatedly to the daughters of the Despard family, moving silently through the house and vanishing without trace. Witnessed by multiple family members over several years, the haunting became one of Britain's most documented supernatural cases, thanks to the efforts of the newly founded Society for Psychical Research, who jumped at the chance to study a haunted house, first hand. “Switch me on.”When you think about it, the original Ghostbusters movie captivated a generation in a way that we usually reserve for franchises like Star Wars. Who would have thought that a big budget semi-horror comedy featuring a bunch of Saturday Night Live alums would become the kind of pop culture phenomenon that is still releasing films 40 years later, not to mention a parade of animated series, collectibles, video games, and more? And yet, that's exactly what happened!And perhaps a key part of that appeal was the central piece of equipment that the Ghostbusters outfitted themselves with: the proton pack. Essentially an “unlicensed nuclear accelerator” that they wear on their backs that allows them to “herd” ghosts into the equally fantastic traps (something that will perhaps be the focus of a future episode of Does it Fly?), the proton pack is as striking a visual as Star Wars' lightsaber or Star Trek's transporter. It's far from the only reason Ghostbusters has endured, but the millions of children of the 1980s who turned their school backpacks into ghost-fighting machines can't be wrong!At the heart of Ghostbusters is the fact that our heroes are all scientists, despite their shared interest in the paranormal. We are pretty sure that the actual article in question can be read right here!SUGGESTED VIEWING It's almost unthinkable that anyone who has clicked on this episode hasn't seen the original Ghostbusters, which is truly a generational, all-time great movie. There's an entire franchise worth exploring beyond it, though. Here's a quick guide to watching them all in the appropriate order.Ghostbusters (1984) and Ghostbusters II (1989)The two movies that make up the bedrock of Ghostbusters canon. The first, is, of course, self-explanatory. Its sequel was seen as something of a disappointment upon release, but in the years since it's seen a critical re-evaluation from the general public. The first movie belongs to a unique category of high-concept genre comedies of the 1980s, which even had this not spawned a series of movies, a toy line, an animated series, and countless collectibles would have made it pretty unique. Others that played with the formula established here include Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure and Beetlejuice (which we did an entire episode on that you can watch right here).Ghostbusters: Answer the Call (2016)Unfairly maligned upon release for reasons we need not get into here, Paul Feig's complete reboot of the franchise  (it's set in a parallel universe from the first films) is better than you've heard. HoweverGhostbusters: Afterlife (2021) and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (2024)These are essentially the belated Ghostbusters III and IV. As is the case with Ghostbusters sequels, your mileage may vary.For those of you who really want to dig deeper, though, you'd be surprised at just how cool (and even scary!) The Real Ghostbusters cartoon from the 1980s was. The Great War haunted the British Empire. Shell shocked soldiers relived the war's trauma through waking nightmares consisting of mutilated and grotesque figures. Modernist writers released memoirs condemning the war as a profane and disenchanting experience. Yet British and Dominion soldiers and their families also read prophecies about the coming new millennium, experimented with séances, and claimed to see the ghosts of their loved ones in dreams and in photographs. On the battlefields, they had premonitions and attributed their survival to angelic, psychic, or spiritual forces. For many, the war was an enchanting experience that offered proof of another world and the transcendental properties of the mind. Between 1914 and 1939, an array of ghosts lived in the minds of British subjects as they navigated the shocking toll that death in modern war exerted in their communities. The life and times of George Albert Smith are not particularly well known. Despite working for several years as a stage hypnotist and psychic, the owner of a popular pleasure park and then eventually a pioneering inventor and filmmaker, there are few who could reel off a biography based on nothing more than a name. In honor of our seven year anniversary and in honor of creating our very own ghost and haunting attached to our podcast, we are discussing the scientific experiment, Philip the Ghost. Philip the Ghost was conjured in the fall of 1972 by a group of eight members of the Toronto Society of Psychical Research group in Toronto, Canada. His story went like this: Philip Isleford was born in 1624, he was an aristocratic Englishman living at the time of Oliver Cromwell. He was married to a beautiful but cold and frigid wife, Dorothea. But the marriage was fraught and loveless… which is why when Philip met the effervescent, Margo, he fell deeply in love with her and brought her home with him… but his decisions led to tragedy and a broken heart. Dorothea accused Margo of witchcraft and Philip watched as his one true love was burnt at the stake… Deeply riddled with guilt, Philip took his own life and was found at the foot of his castle grounds.  Was the group able to utilize this tale to conjure a spirit out of thin air? One of the chief proponents of the theory of a coven was the English Egyptologist Margaret Murray in her work The Witch Cult in Western Europe (1921). According to her a coven consists of 12 witches and a devil as leader. The number is generally taken as a parody of Christ and his 12 disciples. (An alternate theory, stressing the Murray view of a pre-Christian tradition of witches, explains 13 as the maximum number of dancers that can be accommodated in a nine-foot circle.) Each member of a coven is said to specialize in a particular branch of magic, such as bewitching agricultural produce, producing sickness or death in humans, storm raising, or seduction. The actuality of covens was also accepted by Montague Summers, a well-known Roman Catholic writer on witchcraft in the 1920s and 1930s, and more recently by Pennethorne Hughes in his Witchcraft (1952, 1965). Many students of witchcraft, however, dismiss the Murray theory of covens as unfounded and based on insufficient evidence. Nonetheless, 20th-century witchcraft groups continue to use the term coven, and reports of coven activity in the United States and Europe are not uncommon.   What is ESP? Extrasensory perception (ESP) is an unproven paranormal phenomenon in which people allegedly receive information about, or exert control over, their environment in ways that don't use the five senses. Also known as "the sixth sense" or "psi," ESP refers to a wide range of purported abilities, including telepathy (mind reading), psychokinesis (moving objects without physical contact) and precognition (predicting the future). ESP violates our understanding of basic scientific principles. Still, estimates suggest that around two-thirds of people in the United States believe in its existence, according to a 2019 study published in Europe's Journal of Psychology. Even in academia, ESP has inspired serious scientific debate. While some psychologists argue that the subject deserves consideration, skeptics point out that the evidence is weak at best, and fraudulent at worst. In this classic episode from 2019 I'm talking to Jim Matlock about the book 'I Saw a Light and Came Here: Children's Experiences of Reincarnation' he co-authored with Erlendur Haraldsson. The first two thirds of the book is by Erlendur. Modernist writers released memoirs condemning the war as a profane and disenchanting experience. Yet British and Dominion soldiers and their families also read prophecies about the coming new millennium, experimented with séances, and claimed to see the ghosts of their loved ones in dreams and in photographs. On the battlefields, they had premonitions and attributed their survival to angelic, psychic, or spiritual forces. Morgan Knudsen has been involved in the world of paranormal phenomenon for 20 years.
