Gabriel Mckee is an author, librarian, curator, and researcher specializing in science fiction, religion, theology, bibliography/book history, and parahistoriography. His past work includes books on theology and science fiction, curating exhibitions on Edgar Allan Poe and Mark Twain, and working as part of the editorial team for Philip K. Dick's EXEGESIS. His most recent book is THE SAUCERIAN: UFOs, MEN IN BLACK, AND THE UNBELIEVABLE LIFE OF GRAY BARKER.Visit Gabriel online at: https://gabrielmckee.com/THE SAUCERIAN can be ordered from Amazon here, it will be released on April 22, 2025: https://www.amazon.com/Saucerian-UFOs-Black-Unbelievable-Barker/dp/0262049546/Info about THE SAUCERIAN:Gray Barker (1925–1984) was an eccentric literary outsider, filled with ideas that were out of step with the world. An author and unreliable narrator of implausible stories, Barker founded and operated Saucerian Books, an independent publisher of books about flying saucers and other ideas at the fringes of popular discourse. In The Saucerian, Gabriel Mckee tells the fascinating story of Barker's West Virginia–based press, the unique corpus of materials it published, and how office-copying and self-publishing techniques influenced the spread of paranormal beliefs and conspiratorial worldviews over the last century. Following the development of UFO subculture, Mckee explores the life and career of a larger-than-life hoaxer and originator of pseudoscientific ideas.Ever an entertainer, Barker established his reputation with one of the first flying saucer fanzines, The Saucerian, and with his first book, the conspiratorial and sensationalistic They Knew Too Much about Flying Saucers. By the close of the 1950s, he had established a publishing imprint that brought out some of the strangest UFO-related books of the era, with a particular emphasis on flying saucer contactees. Saucerian Books became a platform for those whose stories were too unusual, implausible, or crudely written for more mainstream publishers. Though Barker himself was a skeptic, he viewed the world of occult believers as a source of ongoing entertainment. He also may have used the perceived eccentricity of flying saucer research, or “ufology,” to obscure his homosexuality from his small-town neighbors. From his place on the fringes of midcentury American culture, Barker left an unmatched legacy in conspiratorial concepts that have become prominent pop-cultural folklore, including the Men in Black, the Mothman, and the Philadelphia Experiment. As a mastermind behind the fantastical, Barker's promotional efforts were the precursor to contemporary conspiracism.Gabriel visits with Talking Weird to chat about the amazing life of Gray Barker, and his profound impact on the development of UFO belief. This is an incredible episode, one filled with stories about early Ufology, that you do not want to miss!

Decades before the 1997 sci-fi comedy "Men In Black" launched a multibillion dollar film franchise, a young folklorist, UFO promoter Gray Barker helped to spread the original MIB concept in a book, They Knew Too Much About Flying Saucers. The details about Barker's colorful life is told in Gabriel Mckee's book, The Saucerian: The Unbelievable Life of Gray Barker (MIT Press). It's the strange, but true biography of a central purveyor and promoter of flying saucer and conspiracist knowledge in the mid-twentieth century. Known mostly to people in the UFO field, Barker (who died in 1984) was an eccentric literary outsider, filled with ideas that were out of step with the world. Following the development of UFO subculture, Mckee explores the life and career of a larger-than-life hoaxer and originator of pseudoscientific ideas. Gene and cohost Tim Swartz present our staff announcer, Bob Zanotti, with another episode of "Voices of the Past." Bob has been interested in the UFO phenomenon from a very young age, back in the 50's as a pre-teen. In the 1960's he hosted a New York college radio talk show called “Coffee Klatsch,” which was devoted to the offbeat and the paranormal. As well, Bob often interviewed current UFO personalities. In this episode, you'll hear exclusive audio segments from his radio show, featuring some of the greats and near-greats in the UFO field from the early days. They included Gray Barker, Yonah Fortner,  Dominick Lucchesi, Jim Moseley, August C. Roberts, John J. Robinson, Ivan T. Sanderson, and Andy Sinatra, who was also known as "The Mystic Barber." After broadcast journalism studies in New York and Montreal, his calling led Bob to Switzerland, where he was a full-time broadcast journalist and presenter at Swiss Radio International, Switzerland's international shortwave station. During his 32 years with SRI, Bob also produced a number of features involving the paranormal and the esoteric. Believing the Bizarre: Paranormal Conspiracies & Myths

The Grafton MonsterOn a fateful night in June 1964, Robert Cockrell's drive home through Grafton, West Virginia, took an unexpected turn when he encountered a massive, headless creature with smooth, rubbery skin. This bizarre sighting sparked a town-wide frenzy, with armed locals combing the woods in search of what became known as the Grafton Monster.Multiple witnesses described an 8-10 foot tall entity with broad shoulders and a seemingly non-existent head, lending credence to Cockrell's account and fueling the growing hysteria. As the monster-hunting craze reached fever pitch, UFO researcher Gray Barker linked the creature to extraterrestrial phenomena, adding another layer of mystery to the tale. But just as the investigation seemed to gain traction, both Cockrell and Barker abruptly abandoned their pursuits. The sudden cessation of their inquiries raises unsettling questions: What forces compelled them to drop the subject? Did they uncover truths too disturbing to share, or were they silenced by shadowy figures determined to keep the Grafton Monster's secrets buried?Patreon: Support Believing the Bizarre and get tons of extra content by joining our Patreon. For updates, news, and extra content, follow Believing the Bizarre on social media:InstagramFacebookTwitterDiscordShop Merch: You can rep Believing the Bizarre and buy some unique merch

Author and researcher Lon Strickler will join us tonight to discuss reports of a winged creature in the Chicago skies. The presence of strange winged beings is as old as the human imagination. In the late Summer of 2011, reports of Mothman-like flying humanoids began to surface in the city of Chicago. After three brief sightings, there were no further accounts. Then, unexpectedly, in early 2017, a smattering of encounters emerged from different locations throughout the Chicago metro area until fifty sightings were reached before the end of the Summer. Why Chicago? Why now? This book will examine the witness accounts and the investigator's thought processes as these incidents were brought to our attention. The sightings continue… but we are determined to find the truth. In West Virginia folklore, the Mothman is a humanoid creature reportedly seen in the Point Pleasant area from November 15, 1966, to December 15, 1967. The first newspaper report was published in the Point Pleasant Register, dated November 16, 1966, titled "Couples See Man-Sized Bird ... Creature ... Something".[1] The national press soon picked up the reports and helped spread the story across the United States. The source of the legend is believed to have originated from sightings of out-of-migration sandhill cranes or herons.[2][3]The creature was introduced to a broader audience by Gray Barker in 1970,[4][5] and was later popularized by John Keel in his 1975 book The Mothman Prophecies,[6] claiming that there were supernatural events related to the sightings and a connection to the collapse of the Silver Bridge. The book was later adapted into a 2002 film starring Richard Gere.[7]An annual festival in Point Pleasant is devoted to the Mothman legend.[8] On November 15, 1966, two young couples from Point Pleasant—Roger and Linda Scarberry and Steve and Mary Mallette—told police they had seen a large white creature whose eyes "glowed red" standing at the side of the road near "the TNT area," the site of a former World War II munitions plant.[9][10][11] Linda Scarberry described it as a "slender, muscular man" about seven feet tall with white wings and said that she could not discern its face due to the hypnotic effect of its eyes.[12] Distressed, the witnesses drove away at speed and said the creature flew after their car, making a screeching sound. It pursued them as far as Point Pleasant city limits.[9]Other people reported similar sightings during the next few days after local newspapers reported it. Two volunteer firemen who saw it said it was a "large bird with red eyes." Mason County Sheriff George Johnson commented that he believed the sightings were due to a huge heron he termed a "shitepoke." Contractor Newell Partridge told Johnson that when he aimed a flashlight at a creature in a nearby field, its eyes glowed "like bicycle reflectors." Additionally, he blamed buzzing noises from his television set and the disappearance of his German Shepherd dog on the creature.[2] Wildlife biologist Robert L. Smith at West Virginia University told reporters that descriptions and sightings all fit the sandhill crane, a large American crane almost as tall as a man with a seven-foot wingspan featuring circles of reddish coloring around the eyes. The bird may have wandered out of its migration route and was unrecognized initially because it was not native to this region.[2][3]Batman and his antagonist, Killer Moth, are varyingly cited as influences for the term "Mothman."Due to the popularity of the Batman TV series at the time, the fictional superhero Batman and his rogues gallery were prominently featured in the public eye. While the villain Killer Moth did not appear in the show, the comic book influence of both him and Batman is believed by some to have influenced the coinage of the name “Mothman” in the local newspapers.[13] Do you frequently miss episodes of Mysterious Radio? The first newspaper report was published in the Point Pleasant Register, dated November 16, 1966, titled "Couples See Man-Sized Bird ... Creature ... Something".  The national press soon picked up the reports and helped spread the story across the United States. The source of the legend is believed to have originated from sightings of out-of-migration sandhill cranes or herons. The creature was introduced to a wider audience by Gray Barker in 1970, and was later popularized by John Keel in his 1975 book The Mothman Prophecies, claiming that there were paranormal events related to the sightings, and a connection to the collapse of the Silver Bridge. The book was later adapted into a 2002 film, starring Richard Gere.[ History On November 15, 1966, two young couples from Point Pleasant—Roger and Linda Scarberry, and Steve and Mary Mallette—told police they had seen a large black creature whose eyes "glowed red", standing at the side of the road near "the TNT area", the site of a former World War II munitions plant. Linda Scarberry described it as a "slender, muscular man" about seven feet tall with white wings, and said that she was unable to discern its face due to the hypnotic effect of its eyes. Distressed, the witnesses drove away at high speed, and said that the creature flew after their car, making a screeching sound. It pursued them as far as Point Pleasant city limits. During the next few days, other people reported similar sightings, after local newspapers reported it. Two volunteer firemen who saw it said it was a "large bird with red eyes". Mason County Sheriff George Johnson commented that he believed the sightings were due to an unusually large heron he termed a "shitepoke". Contractor Newell Partridge told Johnson that when he aimed a flashlight at a creature in a nearby field, its eyes glowed "like bicycle reflectors". Additionally, he blamed buzzing noises from his television set and the disappearance of his German Shepherd dog on the creature. Wildlife biologist Robert L. Smith at West Virginia University told reporters that descriptions and sightings all fit the sandhill crane, a large American crane almost as tall as a man with a seven-foot wingspan featuring circles of reddish coloring around the eyes. The bird may have wandered out of its migration route, and therefore was unrecognized at first because it was not native to this region. Due to the popularity of the Batman TV series at the time, the fictional superhero Batman and his rogues gallery were prominently featured in the public eye. While the villain Killer Moth did not appear in the show, the comic book influence of both him and Batman is believed by some to have influenced the coinage of the name "Mothman" in the local newspapers. Following the December 15, 1967 collapse of the Silver Bridge and the death of 46 people, the incident gave rise to the legend and connected the Mothman sightings to the bridge collapse. According to Georgian newspaper Svobodnaya Gruziya, Russian UFOlogists claim that Mothman sightings in Moscow foreshadowed the 1999 Russian apartment bombings. The Mothman Prophecies (2002) is a major motion picture, loosely based on the 1975 book of the same name by John Keel. In 2016, WCHS-TV published a photo purported to be of Mothman taken by an anonymous man while driving on Route 2 in Mason County. Science writer Sharon A. Hill proposed that the photo showed "a bird, perhaps an owl, carrying a frog or snake away" and wrote that "there is zero reason to suspect it is the Mothman as described in legend. There are too many far more reasonable explanations."

Trauma manifests in myriad ways.. On December 15, 1967, trauma erupted in West Virginia - as the small river town of Point Pleasant had just experienced the deadliest bridge collapse in U.S. history. Early that evening, lives in the Ohio River Valley were forever altered, as the Silver Bridge connecting Point Pleasant to Kanauga, Ohio collapsed into the icy river below. 150 American Red Cross volunteers worked feverishly overnight to rescue people and debris from the frigid waters, while friends provided comfort to the weary and hopeful with missing friends and family members. Concerned others supplied food and fire to nourish and warm the workers. “Efforts to dredge the waters of the Ohio River were hampered by the murkiness of the winter's waters, as well as the deep, persistent cold of the December air” (Bolte, 2010). Before the bridge collapse, scores of area residents experienced a year-long barrage of paranormal phenomena. Reports of UFOs, lights in the sky, and Mothman plagued the area for thirteen months to the date, halting abruptly when the thirty-nine-year-old structure collapsed. During this period, witnesses discussed their experiences with police, Athens, Ohio Messenger correspondent Mary Hyre, and paranormal researchers John Keel and Gray Barker; each of whom has since published extensively about the topic. The anomalous activity and catastrophic bridge collapse each caused great emotional, physical, and psychological strain to the people of this otherwise idyllic Appalachian region.

Gene and cohost Tim Swartz introduce Fortean researcher Dennis Stamey, someone Gene first met 50 years ago. Dennis became interested in UFOs in 1966 during the worldwide flap of the late 1960s, immersing himself in magazine articles written by John A. Keel. As well he studied the works of Charles Fort, and Gray Barker. Eventually he started churning out a cheap mimeographed newsletter entitled Spacecraft Review and also contributed articles to Gene Steinberg's Caveat Emptor. He also took up a correspondence with Richard Shaver, who often called him an "idiot." By the 1970s, life called and Dennis set his interests in UFOs and the paranormal aside. However, starting in the early 1980s, he began looking up Fortean articles in the N.Y. Times from 1870-1890, growing intrigued with phantom snipers and slashers.  His first fact book, "Mysterious Snipers, Slashers, and Animal Rippers: A History of Paranormal Assailants," was co-authored with his children, Jillian and Jesse Stamey.

by Charles Lear, author of “The Flying Saucer Investigators.”James W. Moseley was a part of the UFO scene from the days of the first private investigators in the early 1950s up until his death in 2012. He ran the longest running saucer group, the Saucer and Unexplained Celestial Events Research Society or S.A.U.C.E.R.S. (he and the group picked the acronym before they figured out what it could stand for) and steadily published a newsletter, known for most of its existence as Saucer Smear. Moseley has been called the Court Jester of UFOlogy due to his habit of poking fun at those who took themselves and the subject too seriously, and was involved in some hoaxes/pranks with his friend Gray Barker that became infamous. He wrote a book with Karl Pflock about his exploits in saucerdom that was published in 2002 titled Shockingly Close to the Truth: Confessions of a Grave-Robbing UFOlogist. In spite of his less-than-serious nature, he did do some serious investigation in his early days, and in one instance, looked into a saucer crash story and wrote an article about it that was published in the January 1955 issue of Gray Barker's magazine, The Saucerian. Read more

The concept of the Men in Black can be traced back to the 1950s and 1960s during the early days of the UFO phenomenon. The term "Men in Black" was popularized by author Gray Barker in his 1956 book, "They Knew Too Much About Flying Saucers." Barker claimed to have met mysterious men who warned him to stop investigating UFOs. According to reports and testimonies, the Men in Black are described as individuals who dress in black suits and hats, often wearing sunglasses. They are said to possess an aura of strangeness and an otherworldly demeanor. Some accounts describe them as having unusually pale complexions, strange facial features, or even appearing non-human. The primary role attributed to the Men in Black is to suppress information and intimidate witnesses of UFO sightings or encounters with extraterrestrial beings. They allegedly visit witnesses or researchers, often arriving unannounced and displaying an in-depth knowledge of the person's personal life and the incident in question. They employ various tactics to discourage people from sharing their experiences, including threats, harassment, and warnings of dire consequences. Theories surrounding the Men in Black suggest that they are not simply government agents, but rather enigmatic figures associated with secretive organizations or even extraterrestrial entities themselves. Some theories propose that the Men in Black are part of a global cover-up to conceal the existence of UFOs and alien visitations, with the aim of protecting national security or maintaining control over advanced technologies. ---- TIME STAMPS: Who Are The Men In Black? - 0:00 Intro: 2:02 Welcome Back to The Freaky Deaky - 3:21 Dan Aykroyd's Encounter - 8:41 Albert K. The 1976 story from Gray Barker about a 1968 encounter with a Vegetable Monster in Marion County, West Virginia, is certainly a hoax. But long before West Virginia became a state its general land-area was plagued with a spooky reputation for being home to monsters and strange creatures, possibly even portals or gateways to other worlds. Besides bigfoot and giant prehistoric birds, Mothman is probably the most famous and unique of all cryptic-creatures, manifesting multiple times between 1966 and 1977 in West Virginia. Two years before the Point Pleasant sightings a monster called Grafton was also witnessed in Grafton, West Virginia, depicted like Mothman but without wings or red eyes. Going East of Point Pleasant takes you to Braxton County where over a decade before the two previous cases the Flatwoods Monster was witnessed in 1952. One day after the initial sightings of a tall, fiery, floating monster, a young couple and child encountered the same creature, near Frametown, West Virginia. They described it as having a reptile-like head and terrible smell. It examined their car and disappeared into the woods, and then presumably, based on the witnesses, off planet in a ball of light. This latter case has all the hallmarks of classic UFO/abduction encounters, from strange smells and driving on a lone road at night, to electrical interference, years before such cases were made public. Electric interference was part of the Mothman saga too. The September 1952 encounters were within months of releases of ‘The Thing from Another World' and ‘The Day the Earth Stood Still', but before federal authorities decided to officially use Hollywood to disinform the public on the subject. Admittedly, the Flatwoods encounters share some relationship to the humanoid robot Gort. The US Air Force even investigated this case, which means it likely was not an incident of their own making like the 1965 Kecksburg UFO crash. This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/5328407/advertisement

While UFO researcher/investigators came to accept abduction reports as being worthy of their time by the end of the 1970s, only a few, such as John Keel and Gray Barker, were open to contactee reports. Even so, contactee reports kept showing up, and sometimes they would even make it into the newspapers. The first newspaper report was published in the Point Pleasant Register, dated November 16, 1966, titled "Couples See Man-Sized Bird ... Creature ... Something". The national press soon picked up the reports and helped spread the story across the United States. The source of the legend is believed in modernity to have originated from sightings of out-of-migration sandhill cranes or herons. The Mothman was introduced to a wider audience by Gray Barker in 1970, and was later popularized by John Keel in his 1975 book The Mothman Prophecies, claiming that there were supernatural events related to the sightings, and a connection to the collapse of the Silver Bridge. The book was later adapted into a 2002 film, starring Richard Gere. An annual festival in Point Pleasant is devoted to the Mothman legend Support the show
