With the help of serving personnel and the head of the military rabbinate, Shelly Kupferberg explores what it means to be Jewish in today's German armed forces. Shelly also hears from Michael Fürst, the very first Jew to sign up after World War Two, who is now the president of the association of Jewish communities of Lower Saxony.

In this week's episode we follow the story of an 18 year old German soldier, Edwin Kuhns, who was conscripted in 1917 and kept a diary through the 1917 Battle of Cambrai and the 1918 campaigns. He graphically explains how he narrowly missed death, the terrible sights he saw and how he felt during the conflict. There is an emotional account of how he met his Father behind the lines. He then sees action again in the 2nd World War before moving to England in 1948. We then look at the story of an English lady who became the model for the Mother of Canada memorial at Vimy.

Today, while training for The Frontline Walk 2022, I finished the audiobook, All quiet on The Western Front. Written by Erich Maria Remarque and wonderfully narrated by Tom Lawrence. I listened to this audiobook whist training for The ABF Soldiers Charity Frontline Walk. As I write this, in just over 2 weeks, I will be walking along The Western Front of WW1. It is a 100k charity walk from the Lochnagar crater in France to the Menin Gate in Belgium. There is a link below where you can find out more. I bought this audiobook as a way for me to be more involved with this charity walk and to lean. I have been listening to podcasts about WW1 and this audiobook looked good from the reviews. What amazed me about this story is the brutal honesty, insight, and detail in which this story is told. It follows the personal stories of Paul Bäumer, a German Soldier. We follow his story from school to the horrific frontline trenches of Flanders. Through his eyes, we get an incredibly personal and detailed view into life on the frontline in 1914 and beyond. We hear stories of battle, love, loss, home, and war. We get an incredible look into how that generation felt their lives, their youth, was stolen from them. And how brotherhood meant more to them than anything else in the world. I highly recommend this book/audio book to anyone with an interest in WW1. Although I will say that there are harsh, graphic and upsetting scenes in this story. As in the title, I was walking whilst listening to this, and despite that, passing walkers would have seen many expressions on my face; laughter, frustration, disgust, and tears.I give this book an awesome 5/5.There is a modern film adaptation of this story, of the same name, being released on Netflix October 28th. I will review this as a film for my WCCS Movie Room podcast. Hi Neighbors Every episode is special, but this one, well this one pulls at my heart strings a bit more than most. When I started I wanted to pay some homage to the Weird Fiction of the past and to that end I have decided to reach back into the grandpappy pulp and pull up a tale from inside the first issue of Weird Tales. The Grave was written my Orville R. Emerson and published in Issue One Volume One of Weird Tales in 1923. As far as I could find in my research this was the only story Mr. Emerson ever published and for many reasons, that makes this tale feel even more special. Just like every one of you. The story is centered around a couple of soldiers moving around the European theater during World War One and one of them stumbling upon a weird story of his own, penned by a German Soldier. The grim autobiography follows the soldiers thoughts as he is trapped underground, trying to feed himself, trying to free himself, and trying to keep himself sane as he slowly devolves into a revenant. Chilling stuff indeed. It's clear to me Mr. Emerson had some demons to exorcize and did so at the typewriter. A process I'm very familiar with. I wonder now if Mr. Emerson managed to write such a good tale that he freed himself of those demons and perhaps that's why we only have the singe story from him. I just hope that was the case. This is one of the only journals that has not been edited from a Nazi perspective that shows the insight to how they fought in World War II. There are numerous sides of a story but often in history it is written by the victor and these perspectives are normally lost in time. It is important to learn about and preserve all perspectives in history the only way to prevent making the same mistakes is to learn how people made them in the first place. That is why I chose to tell this story as it shows that even regular people can get dragged into war over something that is not important to them and ultimately they don’t understand.

We begin with the book that taught us that Germans are people, too! Young Patty learns about the world in her small town.

Genevieve live in a small village in the North of France, where she sought refuge during bombings. She evacuated from her village in France to Normandy once the Germans arrived. The German soldiers who were stationed in her village were allowed to stay in her home whenever they pleased. When she would work on the farm, her and other girls would stop to watch the planes fight above them. She would meet up with other people on her street to listen to the radio announcements coming in from London. As a teenager, there was an empty section in the field. In the section, she and another girl placed flowers on the grave of a German Soldier. Some young French boys were walking and mistakenly took German Soldiers as Americans. Those boys were all killed.
