On In The Market with Janet Parshall this week, Dr. Paul Weaver took us on a trip through time and showed us how biblical archaeology continues to confirm the accounts of scripture and strengthen our faith. Lt. Col. Dave Grossman his insights on how to make our families stronger and “bulletproof” them from the damaging outside influences. Then Dr. Everett Piper joined us to rebut the claims of a popular podcaster that the church is filled with hypocrites. Todd Hampson was back to the talk about the last days and the rapture. The nightly news can make it appear as though the gap between Muslims and Christians is insurmountable, but Fouad Masri, founder of The Crescent Project says that is not so. He gave us practical guidance for building connections with Muslims that create opportunity to share the good news of Jesus with them. It is time for another examination of the headlines of the week through the lens of scripture.Become a Parshall Partner: http://moodyradio.org/donateto/inthemarket/partnersSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

But very few people take responsibility for becoming better leaders themselves. In Part 2 of this conversation, Conrad continues with Dave Grossman to explore what leadership really looks like inside first responder culture—and why so many organizations struggle with it. Grossman makes it clear: leadership is not about rank. It's about self-control, service, and consistency. They unpack the reality of toxic leadership, why it's not a new problem, and how pressure, poor selection, and lack of development contribute to it. But more importantly, they focus on what individuals can do—right now—to lead, regardless of their position. This episode is a direct challenge to anyone waiting for someone else to fix the culture. Because leadership doesn't start when you get promoted. It starts the moment you decide to show up differently. If you've ever felt stuck under poor leadership, this conversation will give you a new lens—and a new level of responsibility. Key Topics Covered Why toxic leadership is so common Leadership vs positional authority Leading up, down, and across The role of self-control in leadership effectiveness Servant leadership in high-stress environments How to influence culture without rank Encouragement, recognition, and building trust Key Takeaways Leadership is a daily practice, not a position You don't need rank to influence culture The best leaders serve, not command Recognition and encouragement are powerful leadership tools You can lead—even in a broken system Notable Quotes “Nobody respects your temper tantrum. They respect your calm.” “To be a better leader, you have to be a better person.” “Your job as a leader is to help them do their job better.” “Be the leader you wish you had.” Resources Mentioned Grossman's leadership and training materials Leadership development principles rooted in behavioral science Mastermind CTA If this episode challenged you to step up in your leadership, this is exactly what we're building inside the First Responder Leadership Mastermind, launching June 3. This is where we take these concepts and actually apply them—together, in a group of leaders committed to raising the standard.

Level up your leadership: https://firstresponderwellness.co/mastermind/ 131 - You're Not Broken, You're Leveling Up - Lt. Col. Dave Grossman What if the very thing you've been told is breaking you… is actually making you stronger? In this conversation, Conrad sits down with Dave Grossman to unpack what really happens inside the mind and body under stress. From the physiological effects of high-pressure situations to the misunderstood nature of PTSD, this episode challenges one of the most common narratives in first responder culture. Grossman introduces the concept of post-traumatic growth—the idea that adversity, when processed correctly, doesn't weaken us… it strengthens us. He explains why elevated heart rate, anxiety, and mental replay aren't necessarily signs of damage, but signals that the body is adapting and preparing. You'll walk away with practical tools to manage stress in real time—simple, actionable techniques like controlled breathing and even something as basic as drinking water to regulate the nervous system. More importantly, this episode reframes how leaders should guide their teams through trauma—not by dismissing it, but by helping them understand it. This is not just about surviving stress. It's about learning how to grow through it. Key Topics Covered The difference between PTSD and post-traumatic growth What's actually happening in your body under stress Why perception determines performance Tools to regulate the nervous system in real time How leaders should guide others through high-stress experiences EMDR and separating memory from emotion Why most people are more resilient than they think Key Takeaways Stress responses are not always signs of damage—they can be signs of adaptation Leaders play a critical role in how trauma is processed Calm is trained, not automatic The body can be brought under control with simple, repeatable techniques Growth is possible—even after intense experiences Notable Quotes “This is not PTSD… this is what it feels like to level up.” “Two people can feel the same thing—one thinks they're broken, the other wants to do it forever.” “Breathing is a leash on the nervous system.” “The worse it gets, the calmer the leader needs to become.” Resources Mentioned EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) Grossman's books and training materials Call to Action If this episode resonated with you, share it with someone on your team. Five years in, the mission feels sharper than ever: equip correctional professionals with tools, mindset, and purpose that hold up under real pressure. We look back on a year of travel and training, thank the partners who help us serve, and pull together the most impactful moments from conversations that changed how we read risk, teach skills, and define what a good day on the tier looks like.Greg Williams and Brian Marren break down human behavior pattern recognition in a way that clicks on contact: master the baseline, spot the deviation, act before escalation. From the “watching the watcher” concept to recalibrating your mind at every threshold, their insights show why anticipation beats reaction and why prisons are the ultimate classroom for sense-making. We build on that with practical training talk from Myles Cook, who turns skills into a repeatable process: define the real problem, design adult-learning solutions, and leave with a pitch your leaders can approve and measure. It's training that sticks because it solves something that hurts. We also get grounded in purpose with Lt. Col. Dave Grossman, who frames corrections as a life of daily sacrifice in service of public safety. That perspective threads through Pete Bloodworth's story of earning trust at USP Marion, where open bars and lever locks demanded courage and clarity, and Jimmy Cummings walks us through a can't-make-this-up escape tale that proves the job will surprise you no matter how many shifts you've worked. In this episode in joined by Lt. Col. Dave Grossman. Retired U.S. Army Ranger, paratrooper, former West Point psychology professor and author of On Killing and On Combat walks us through how we unpack the psychology of stress, trauma, and resilience. Grossman has spent decades training military, law enforcement, and first responders on what actually happens to the mind and body under extreme pressure, from tunnel vision and time distortion to the adrenaline crash that follows a major incident. His insights reveal how we can prepare ourselves and our teams not only to survive high-stress encounters but to grow stronger from them.We explore the concept of the “bulletproof mind,” the science of stress inoculation, and the leadership practices that help protect responders long after the crisis ends. From tactical breathing and after-action reviews to the moral weight of service and survivor's guilt, Grossman provides a framework for resilience that applies equally to the battlefield, the fireground, and everyday life. Send us a textLieutenant Colonel Dave Grossman brings decades of expertise to this powerful conversation about the psychology of violence, trauma response, and the vital role corrections professionals play in society.Drawing from his groundbreaking research that shaped books like "On Combat" and "On Killing," Grossman frames correctional officers as society's essential "sheepdogs" – those who willingly face danger so others don't have to. "They are truly God's agent to do good in this world," he reflects, highlighting how corrections work balances public safety with offering second chances at redemption. The discussion delves deep into practical tools for managing the unique psychological challenges of corrections work. From techniques to prevent PTSD (like controlled breathing exercises and using water as an emotional "reset button") to cognitive behavioral strategies for managing stress reactions, Grossman offers actionable insights born from his extensive research. He emphasizes the importance of self-control: "Nobody ever respects our temper tantrum; they respect our calm."Most surprising is Grossman's compelling research on sleep deprivation, revealing how inadequate sleep dramatically increases risks for PTSD, depression, and suicide – crucial information for those working overtime and irregular shifts. His practical sleep hygiene recommendations aren't merely for comfort but potentially life-saving interventions for professionals regularly exposed to trauma.Throughout the conversation runs a thread of purpose and meaning. Military expert Col. Dave Grossman discusses not only African and Middle Eastern child soldiers but also the experience of youthful draftees in Viet Nam. Along the way, we cover Ukraine's fighters, PTSD, video games, female child soldiers, sleep deprivation, chaplains, and how Grossman supports his own deployed grandson. Alert: some troubling content. 2d alert: we're not saying that the U.S. draft system in 1974 is comparable to the kidnapping and conscription of 13-year-olds in Kenyan militias. Hear us out. Dave GrossmanTranslation of clip 1:“So this particular day, we were all dressing up to go to the market. Then we realized the rebels wereall over our compound. They caught up with me and brought me home. My mother had just delivered a baby. They told her they wanted one million shillings or else they would kill me. So they brought 2 big bundles of sticks and they began beating me. They beat me until I was unconscious. They said that I would become a good soldier now that they had taken the civilian spirit away from me.”Translation of second clip not in English:“For 4 years, we did whatever they told us to do just to keep them satisfied. And to try to make them trust us so they would not kill us and we could escape from captivity. But in our hearts, nothings was changing. They would teach us that the people we loved were Kafir (infidels). And that we should fight them. Outwardly we were acting like them. Inside, though, we were still holding on to our religion. But they knew that we hadn't converted to their religion, so they put us in prison. They told us, ‘You are still Yezidis.'” And they hit us with sticks. It was difficult. I begged them, ‘Show mercy. But they continued to beat me.'…--When you were released from captivity and got back home, why did you get the tattoo of your mother on your arm?I love my mother a lot and I want her image to be with me always. Bulletproof Mind Grossman, a retired U.S. Army Ranger, paratrooper, and former West Point psychology professor, is presented as a leading authority on the psychology of conflict, human aggression, and surviving high-stress situations. His work emphasizes the importance of mental and emotional preparation for violence and adversity, particularly for those in roles such as military, law enforcement, first responders, and school/church security personnel. A core theme across the materials is the perceived existence of a battle between "good and evil" and the necessity of confronting "uncomfortable facts" to protect oneself and society. Grossman On Truth offers various presentations and training programs, including "Bulletproof Mind," "Safe Schools and Healthy Students," and "Bulletproof House of Worship Security," all centered on preparing individuals to face and overcome threats. Main Themes and Key Ideas: 1. The Psychology of Conflict and Violence: Lt. Col. Grossman's work is fundamentally rooted in understanding the psychological aspects of conflict, aggression, and violence. His extensive background in the military and as a psychology professor informs his analysis of human behavior in high-stress situations. The "Bulletproof Mind" presentation, for example, focuses on the "unique mental stressors of possible violence" and understanding the physiological and psychological responses to such events. This is presented as crucial for making correct decisions in the heat of the moment and afterward. 2. Preparation and Resilience in High-Stress Situations: A central tenet of Grossman's philosophy is the necessity of mental and emotional preparation to perform and survive in confrontational environments. The materials repeatedly highlight his expertise in training individuals to be "not only physically prepared but mentally and emotionally equipped for the challenges they face." The concept of "resiliency in the face of adversity" is a key offering from Grossman On Truth. 3. The "Warrior Mindset" and "Sheepdogs": While the term "Warrior Mindset" is mentioned in the "Bulletproof Mind Flyer," the Grossman On Truth website also features a section dedicated to "Sheepdogs." This imagery, often used to describe those who protect the innocent (the "sheep") from those who would harm them (the "wolves"), aligns with the broader theme of individuals being mentally prepared to confront threats and protect others. The materials position Grossman as a key figure in developing this protective mindset. 4. Confronting "Good and Evil" and "Truth": The materials introduce a strong moral dimension, stating that "Our world is in the midst of a battle between the forces of good and evil." They claim that "Things are being twisted and good is called evil and evil is being, accepted as good." Grossman On Truth positions itself as providing "truth" and facing "uncomfortable facts." This framing underpins the urgency and necessity of their training programs. 5. Protecting Vulnerable Populations: A significant focus of Grossman's work is on enhancing safety and security for vulnerable populations, particularly children and religious congregations. The "Safe Schools and Healthy Students" presentation directly addresses the need to "protect the children who have been entrusted to our care," requiring individuals to face "uncomfortable facts, including violent children, terrorists, and the lagging security systems." Similarly, "Bulletproof House of Worship Security" focuses on preventing violence in places of worship and protecting congregations. 6. Practical Training and Actionable Strategies: Beyond theoretical understanding, the materials emphasize providing practical strategies and "response technologies" for dealing with threats. The descriptions of the presentations outline specific areas of training, such as identifying threats, de-escalation techniques, lessons learned from past tragedies, and ensuring preparedness in specific scenarios (e.g., "what does the prepared safety team look like on Sundays"). 7. Extensive Background and Recognition: The materials heavily emphasize Lt. Col. Grossman's credentials and recognition in various fields. His background as an Army Ranger, paratrooper, and West Point professor, along with his publications ("On Killing" is highlighted as a "perennial bestseller" with "over half a million copies sold"), media appearances, and testimony before government bodies, are used to establish his authority and credibility as an expert. His involvement in the aftermath of several school massacres is also prominently mentioned. Key Facts and Quotes: · Lt. Col. Dave Grossman is a retired U.S. Army Ranger, paratrooper, and former West Point psychology professor. · He is the author of numerous books, including the "perennial bestseller" On Killing. · Grossman On Truth, LLC aims to "provide truth and equip men and women with mental tools to enable resiliency in the face of adversity." · Presentations offered include "Bulletproof Mind," "Safe Schools and Healthy Students," and "Bulletproof House of Worship Security." · The materials state: "Our world is in the midst of a battle between the forces of good and evil. Dave Grossman, a retired Lieutenant Colonel, renowned author, and speaker, shares his insights on spiritual warfare, the "sheepdog" analogy, and the critical role of sleep in maintaining resilience. Through his experiences and teachings, he brings attention to how men can embody both protectors and caregivers, fostering a balanced and loving environment in their homes while being ready to respond to threats. Grossman encourages men to channel their inner sheepdog: - Self-control is key. Losing your temper is akin to losing bodily control—there is never an appropriate moment for it. - Men are encouraged to switch from protector mode (sheepdog) to nurturing mode (family dog), embodying gentleness and patience at home. Ultimately, Grossman's insights provide a comprehensive framework for men to balance their roles as protectors and nurturers. By fostering self-control, engaging in spiritual warfare, and prioritizing sleep, they can become effective sheepdogs for their families and communities. The transformation into both a gentle caregiver and a resolute protector is not just possible but essential in building strong families and resilient communities.
