As J Mo rapidly approaches (or has perhaps already passed?) 3000 films watched all-time on Letterboxd, it felt fitting to kick off a new year with the story of another man who thought he'd hit the 3000 plateau only for it to be taken away from him on a technicality, as we try to whip ourselves back in to game-shape for 2025 by watching a sports comedy that's a little too light on laughs. It's 2004's Mr. 3000, directed by Charles Stone III, and starring Bernie Mac, Angela Bassett, Michael Rispoli, Dondré Whitfield, Paul Sorvino, Chris Noth, Keegan-Michael Key, Dane Cook and Tom Arnold. While the movie never really finds its groove comedically, it's still a charming sports twist on the cocky-hothead-gets-humbled archetype that does a great job of using existing teams, leagues and sports TV shows to make the whole thing feel somewhat real. This is to say nothing of Bernie Mac, who has more than enough charisma to carry this even when the script isn't entirely where it needs to be. Plus: we take a good half-hour off the top of the first show of the new year to countdown our duelling lists of the Top Ten Films of 2024. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening to our discussion, Mr. 3000 is currently free to stream in Canada on Hoopla. Other works discussed in this episode include The Substance, Juror No. 2, Twisters, Will & Harper, Civil War, Longlegs, Hit Man, I Saw The TV Glow, The Wild Robot, The Fall Guy, Conclave, Love Lies Bleeding, La Chimera, Dune: Part Two, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, Challengers, Woman of the Hour, Carry-On, Lupin the Third: The Castle of Cagliostro, Cuckoo, Red One, Ladder 49 and National Treasure, among countless others. We'll be back next week with a little ADHD-VHS, as Hayley puts her newly-acquired VCR to work watching a movie on tape that is new to her: 1993's The Fugitive, with Harrison Ford and Tommy Lee Jones, that is currently streaming north of the border on Starz. And later in the month, we'll be circling back to our man Bernie Mac as January's canon consideration is 2001's Ocean's Eleven! Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

ANGELA'S SYMPOSIUM 📖 Academic Study on Witchcraft, Paganism, esotericism, magick and the Occult

This episode delves into the mystical and Masonic legacy of Count Alessandro Cagliostro, focusing on his creation of High Egyptian Freemasonry. Cagliostro, a figure shrouded in mystery and controversy, claimed esoteric knowledge and noble origins, quickly gaining notoriety across Europe as a healer and Freemason. We explore Cagliostro's introduction of the Egyptian Rite in Naples in 1777, which marked a significant departure from traditional Freemasonry by integrating mystical practices and the concept of spiritual and moral transformation. His rites catered to both men and women, incorporating beliefs in theism and the immortality of the soul, and outlined a path for redemption through spiritual, intellectual, and physical restoration. We also cover the specifics of Cagliostro's Masonic rituals, which were designed to elevate practitioners through a series of stages: from spiritual reawakening and intellectual renewal, emphasizing alchemy and theurgy, to achieving a divine connection. These stages culminated in the mastery of esoteric arts, enabling initiates to perform significant theurgical acts. CONNECT & SUPPORT

You can find it at underworlddustfunk.bandcamp.com.  We're shedding light on an until-now veiled era of Illuminati history that will reshape our entire understanding of the infamous & mythic order and the raft of associated conspiracy theories... We begin w/ the Bavarian Order's origins, Adam Weishaupt, & the assertion of Rosicrucian & Masonic author Alistair Lees' that Thomas Jefferson was in fact initiated into the society of illuminists via Edmund Burke. From there, we trace Skull & Bones' lineage back to the Illuminati via this earlier Phi Beta Kappa society at William & Mary, which will have major implications on our discussion of the British & Germanic revivals of the Illuminati in the fin de siècle / turn-of-the-century. To sum, this 2 parter is largely an exercise in demonstrating how basically every occult order & secret society in the early 20th century can be both mapped & connected by said British & German Illuminati revivals. I may return w/ an even more forensic set of notes, but here are some of the major figures, orders, & topics that we tether together in this investigation rooted in brand new, cutting edge evidence sourced from the archives of the Christian Masonic "Societas Rosicruciana in Anglia": The initiatic succession of Illuminati-paranoia in hip hop; Skull & Bones; Ezra Stiles—alchemist, cabalist, & Yale President; the Bushes; Howard Taft; Gog & Magog and their commingling sex magical & apocalyptic symbolism for Bonesmen; the fact that Bonesman Howard Taft's ancestor Patricia recently published an op-ed running interference for the Z**nist project w/ a weird racial bent to it; Sabbatai Zevi; Sabbateans & Frankists; cabala-influenced Yale societies; the history of the Illuminati from seemingly anti-monarchical to capitalist-reifying holding pattern; some wonderments re the ongoing genocide & the apocalyptic & cabalistic symbolism of the Oct. 7th "attack"; pansophism; colonial Christian cabalists like John Winthrop the Younger, Daniel Leeds, & the Mathers;... Bringing it up to the Illuminati revival, we discuss: how Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, theosophist, & Freemason William Wynn Westcott was initiated into a revived Illuminati via Theodore Reuss, the German spy & infiltrator of Marxist movements; along the way, we learn about a number of recognizable figures from past EPs who were either initiates of Illuminati revivals or else tangentially connected... we're talking Papus; John Yarker; Aleister Crowley; JFC Boney Fuller; the OTO; the Rite of Memphis-Misraim (which was indelibly connected w/ the Illuminati & shared numerous overlaps); Rudolf Steiner; proto-Nazi spy & Thule Society founder Baron von Sebbotendorf; Nazi Navy intel officer & Rosicrucian Arnold Krumm-Heller; our old snake-oily ad man buddy from AMORC & likely German asset Harvey Spencer Lewis (plus Lt. Col. Aquino's claims that AMORC was descended from the OTO via Reuss's authority, meaning there's an Illuminati connection there, too); the draft dodging DA raid; Garibaldi; Cagliostro; Cagliostro's master Jacob Falk aka Doctor Falckon—an alchemist, Baal Shem, & Frankist rabbi, which brings us back to Z**nism's roots in these Jewish esoteric societies connected to the Illuminati; & much much more. It's really one for the ages, folks. Songs: | Goodie Mob - "Cell Therapy" | | Big Moochie Grape - "Illuminati Business" | | Ras Kass - "Ordo Abchao" |

Welcome back! This week Elias and Noah are once again silly as all get out, but when we are silly for all the right reasons it's ok. Elias talks about Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro and how one of the prevailing themes is that kindness always wins and prevails over evil. Noah on the other hand talks about The Goo Goo Dolls hit song Iris and how the lyrics in the song illustrate how we have pushed away from God and the peace that He has offered us just so we can actively choose sin so as to avoid being vulnerable with Him. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/ocvepod/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/ocvepod/support

Hello everyone and welcome to Some Like It Scott's second Countdown miniseries on 2023, a podcast first focusing entirely on the works of Japanese animator, Hayao Miyazaki: the Miyazaki Countdown. To honor one of the living legends of animation, the countdown crew of Scott, Scott, and Jay will watch all 11 of Miyazaki's films to-date, rewinding all the way back to his directorial origins with 1979's action-adventure heist thriller LUPIN III: THE CASTLE OF CAGLIOSTRO, all the way to his then-final film, 2013's biographical epic romance drama, THE WIND RISES. Join us each week over the next 11 weeks, as we build up to what is Miyazaki's self-proclaimed now-final film (we'll see...), the fantasy epic, THE BOY AND THE HERON.   In Part 1 of the Miyazaki Countdown, Scott, Scott, and Jay tap into Miyazaki in his pre-Studio Ghibli days, with a discussion of Miyazaki's first feature-length directorial outing: LUPIN III: THE CASTLE OF CAGLIOSTRO. Based on characters from the Lupin III manga, THE CASTLE OF CAGLIOSTRO follows veteran gentleman thief Lupin III, who with the help of his accomplice and righthand-man, Jigen, successfully robbed a casino, only to find their newfound fortune to be counterfeit cash, originating from a small sovereign nation named Cagliostro. Intent on acquiring his treasure, Lupin and Jigen head for the countryside of Cagliostro - where Lupin himself may have a bit of history - only to be swept up in the nefarious affairs of Count Cagliostro, who plans to marry the Princess Clarisse to affirm his power over the nation and regain the fabled ancient treasure of Cagliostro, combining Clarisse's ancestral ring with his own. The Count will find his plans not so easily executed however, thanks to the interloping Lupin, Jigen, and fellow associates Goemon, Fujiko, and the rival Inspector Zenigata. The countdown crew reflect on the world's first introduction to Miyazaki, the ensemble cast of fun characters, and whether Miyazaki's "spy" / Mission Impossible-type movie goes off without a hitch.

“Believe in the power of the thief.”    Before he left the world of Lupin behind and went off to change the course of anime history forever with Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, Hayao Miyazaki returned to TMS for a final set of Lupin the 3rd projects that have become iconic anime classics: The 1979 feature film The Castle of Cagliostro, and episodes 145 and 155 of Part II, “Albatross – Wings of Death” and “Farewell, O Dearest Lupin!”, distributed in the US in the 1990s as Lupin III's Greatest Capers. These were the first pieces of Lupin media commercially available in America, and Cagliostro in particular is the most frequent entry point for Lupin newcomers. While Miyazaki's more heroic, chivalric vision of the character is a bit of an outlier, there's a reason Cagliostro has such magnetic appeal, as it's one of the single greatest animated films ever made, a perfectly paced action adventure fueled by some of the most virtuosic animation to ever grace the silver screen. An influence for all sorts of movies all around the world, it's a true classic, and so are Miyazaki's two episodes of Part II, with “Albatross” in particular taking the director's love of airplanes to astonishing new heights, and setting an impossibly high bar for how good TV animation can be.    Enjoy, and come back next week as we enter the Pink Jacket era and review Lupin the 3rd Part III and the 1985 film The Legend of the Gold of Babylon!    Time Chart: Theme Song: 0:00:00 – 0:01:20 Intro: 0:01:20 – 0:11:32 Eyecatch Break 1: 0:11:32 – 0:12:03 The Castle of Cagliostro: 0:12:03 – 2:27:07 Eyecatch Break 2: 2:27:07 – 2:27:39 Greatest Capers Episodes: 2:27:39 – 3:16:35 End Theme: 3:16:35 – 3:17:50    Support the show at Ko-fi ☕️ https://ko-fi.com/weeklystuff   Subscribe to The Weekly Stuff Podcast on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/TheWeeklyStuffPodcast   Follow The Weekly Stuff Wordcast newsletter for regular updates and extra content!  https://weeklystuff.substack.com   Visit our website and subscribe to Japanimation Station on all podcast platforms: http://japanimationstation.com/   Subscribe to The Weekly Stuff Podcast on all podcast platforms: http://www.weeklystuffpodcast.com   “Welcome to Japanimation Station!” Lyrics by Sean Chapman, Music by Thomas Lack, featuring Hatsune Miku. https://www.thomaslack.com

“Lupin, our manly drama ends today!”    Airing from 1977 to 1980, the second Lupin the 3rd TV anime – retroactively titled “Part II” – produced a whopping 155 episodes, and with the iconic red jacket and the entire five-person crew (Lupin, Jigen, Fujiko, Goemon, and Zenigata) in tow for every adventure, this is the series that firmly cemented Lupin III as an enduring anime icon, and set the tone for many of his future capers. For today's episode, we watched a selection of 27 episodes – see the full list below – and experienced a wide range of adventures, from Lupin and company stealing a vintage bottle of wine on Christmas, to Jigen helping a ballerina defect to the West, to ‘Pops' Zenigata springing a daring trap for Lupin on the highway, to Goemon surviving a shockingly violent bout of torture, to two whole episodes devoted to an extremely surprising (and very funny) alternate history of Jesus Christ himself! Part II is truly a wild ride, with some absolute masterpiece episodes displaying some of the greatest animation in TV history, and almost always providing a big dose of fun.    Enjoy, and come back next week as we review Lupin's most famous adventure with Hayao Miyazaki's 1979 classic The Castle of Cagliostro, and look at the two episodes Miyazaki directed for Part II, Albatross – Wings of Death and Farewell, O Dearest Lupin!    Time Chart: Theme Song: 0:00:00 – 0:01:20 Intro, History, and Part II Overview: 0:01:20 – 0:57:57  Eyecatch Break 1: 0:57:57 – 0:58:30  Episode-by-episode review, part 1: 0:58:30 – 2:22:00  Eyecatch Break 2: 2:22:00 – 2:22:29  Episode-by-episode review, part 2: 2:22:29 – 3:45:25 End Theme: 3:45:25 – 3:46:40    Support the show at Ko-fi ☕️ https://ko-fi.com/weeklystuff   Subscribe to The Weekly Stuff Podcast on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/TheWeeklyStuffPodcast   Follow The Weekly Stuff Wordcast newsletter for regular updates and extra content!  https://weeklystuff.substack.com “Welcome to Japanimation Station!” Lyrics by Sean Chapman, Music by Thomas Lack, featuring Hatsune Miku. https://www.thomaslack.com   Full list of episodes watched (Japanese title/English title)    1 - "Lupin the Third's Gallant Appearance" / "The Return of Lupin the 3rd" 12 - "A Gift for the President" / "The Sleight Before Christmas" 13 - "The Great Chase in San Francisco" / "I Left My Mind in San Francisco" 20 - "Cornered Lupin" / "Hell Toupee" 21 - "Goemon's Revenge" / "The Last Mastery" 25 - "Encounter With the Deadly Iron Lizard" / "The Lair of the Land-Shark" 26 - "A Rose and a Pistol" / "Shot Through the Heart" 27 - "Where Did the Cinderella Stamp Go?" / "The Little Princess of Darkness" 30 - "The Wind in Morocco is Hot" / "Morocco Horror Picture Show" 32 - "Lupin Dies Twice" / "Lupin the Interred" 34 - "Lupin Who Turned Into a Vampire" / "But your Brother was Such a Nice Guy" 36 - "Uncover the Secret of Tsukikage Castle" / "The Riddle of Tsukikage Castle" 38 - "The Sweet Trap of ICPO" / "Happy Betrayals to You" 48 - "Lupin Laughs at the Alarm Bell" / "Vault Assault" 57 - "Computer or Lupin?" / "Alter-Ego Maniac" 58 - "The Face of Goodbye at the National Border" / "Gettin' Jigen with It" 66 - "Order: Shoot to Kill!!" / "Beauty and the Deceased" 69 - "The Woman Pops Fell in Love With" / "Zenigata Getcha into My Life" 85 - "The ICPO's Secret Plan" / "The Secret Order of ICPO" 94 - "Lupin vs. Superman" / "Lupin Vs. “Wherever he goes, he'll be chased. That is his destiny.”    In 1978, Lupin the 3rd made the leap to the big screen with his first animated feature film, and while the second Lupin movie, 1979's Hayao Miyazaki-directed The Castle of Cagliostro, is the more famous film, The Mystery of Mamo is arguably the single piece of Lupin animation that cuts closest to the heart of the character and the tone, humor, and storytelling style that makes Lupin the 3rd so enduring. It's a globetrotting adventure that takes the audience all around the world, makes fantastic use of all five regular characters, has a wonderfully anarchic sense of humor, and is spectacularly animated from start-to-finish, a virtuosic feat from franchise stalwarts like Yuzo Aoki and Yasuo Otsuka. And it even has a thoughtful thematic core saying something surprisingly profound about Lupin as a character and the way he moves through the world, making for a movie that isn't just uproariously funny and consistently surprising, but actually kind of poignant. It's an absolute classic, and one that's a delight to discuss on today's episode.    Enjoy, and come back next week as we dive into Lupin's longest-running and most successful anime, Lupin the 3rd Part II.    Time Chart: Theme Song: 0:00:00 – 0:01:20 Intro, History, and Review Part 1: 0:01:20 – 0:57:23  Eyecatch Break: 0:57:23 – 0:58:08 Review Part 2: 0:58:08 – 2:26:58  End Theme: 2:26:58 – 2:28:13   Support the show at Ko-fi ☕️ https://ko-fi.com/weeklystuff   Subscribe to The Weekly Stuff Podcast on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/TheWeeklyStuffPodcast   Follow The Weekly Stuff Wordcast newsletter for regular updates and extra content!  https://weeklystuff.substack.com   Visit our website and subscribe to Japanimation Station on all podcast platforms: http://japanimationstation.com/   Subscribe to The Weekly Stuff Podcast on all podcast platforms: http://www.weeklystuffpodcast.com   “Welcome to Japanimation Station!” Lyrics by Sean Chapman, Music by Thomas Lack, featuring Hatsune Miku. https://www.thomaslack.com

[School of Movies 2023] This has been a long time coming. You've all been so good and respectful when it comes to not bombarding us with requests for anime shows that we decided to treat you collectively, and finally push the button on the one studio whose body of work is the first thing most people think of when it comes to prestigious films in this medium. Studio Ghibli was founded in 1985 and have produced two dozen movies to date. This is the first of a series of shows releasing over this year that will cover all of these. And to do that we have to go back to the source. Hayao Miyazaki was one of the founders, alongside Toshio Suzuki and Isao Takahata, and his is the most singular creative vision, informing upon the direction and philosophy of their art for forty years.  Most of this first episode is spent discussing what repeating motifs show up across this body of work, and how much of that ties in with Hayao's worldview. We lightly cover Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro which he directed for Tokyo Movie Shinsha in 1979, and then move on to Nausicaa (1984) which was based on a manga book of his. These led up to the actual official formation of Ghibli in 1985. You will definitely pick up on themes that will be coming back around again and again, and we are honoured to be able to talk about these in lengthy depth, even if we do frequently strike an irreverent tone.

His father was from Dublin and he was a protestant minister. He was educated at home and then when he was 13, his family moved to the USA, then to France then to Britain. He was educated at King Edward's School in Birmingham (where Tolkien later went amongst other famous alumni) and then at Merton College in Oxford. He went to teach in Brighton and in Jamaica. He returned to Britain from Jamaica and began to write professionally. He was most famous for his scientific essays. But he also wrote science fiction. He was an atheist and socialist. They are particularly to be found in Wessex and the south and west of England. But of course megalithic structures of similar types can be found all over Atlantic Europe. Nobody would suggest that the so-called Picts created them.Theosophists & Madam BlavatskyThe Theosophical Society was created mainly by Madame Helena Blavatsky who had a background in Spiritualism. This was a time of religious change with a huge upsurge in Spiritualism. The first lodge was in Scotland. There were influences from western Occultism, but also Hinduism and Buddhism and they talked about the ascended masters. These ascended masters included Abraham, Moses, Solomon, Jesus but also the Buddha, Confucious and Lao Tzu but also Mesmer, Bohme and Cagliostro.  Theosophy has evolved into the New Age.Mrs Bruce (the esoteric Buddhist) seems to be one of these.GhostsThe story reports that we only see the ghosts from periods within our knowledge.  But of course this is not true. On Thursday February 22nd, 2018 the Hermetic Hour with host Poke Runyon will present a discussion on the life and career of the 18th century magician and alchemical adept who called himself  Count Alessandro Cagliostro. He was perhaps the most colorful and adventurous character in our Hermetic tradition. Vilified as a rogue, a scoundrel, and a charlatan by the academy and the Church in Europe he was loved by the common people for his healing touch and alchemical medicines which he administered freely to the poor, and dearly to the rich. He claimed to be able to create gold to support his charity work and lavish life style. He and his glamorous wife Lorenza founded an androgynous  quasi-Masonic Egyptian rite which allegedly involved nudity and sex magick. Cagliostro was featured as an anti-hero in a series of novels by Alexander Dumas, and depicted on film by Orson Welles in the (1949 ) movie classic BLACK MAGIC. We will consult Sax Rhomer's ROMANCE of SORCERY ( 1914 ) for a more accurate version of the Count's adventures than Dumas' novels and the screenplay offer -- so if you'd like to meet the real Count Cagliostro, tune in and we'll follow him on his journey as he invented himself.
