Dean Morgan is a proud Welshman who aged 16 joined the 1st Battalion Welsh Guards. After training at Pirbright he was part of the Major Generals Parade and when he was spoken to the inspecting officer was surprised at his age and suggested that he shouldn't mention it!He was too young to deploy with the battalion to Northern Ireland. When he reached 18, he badgered Company Sgt Major Nicky Mott to allow him to deploy as a joint team with the Irish and Scots Guards. He still remembers the mnemonic FATLAD. Dean transferred to 2 company and became part of the reconnaissance team and deployed to the Balkans. He would pass memorials to mass graves and there was a sense of loss in so many communities. Dean describes his time in Iraq and the fateful time in Afghanistan when Col Thorneloe was killed but he was one of a number who lost their lives. Dean recounts his leaving of Afghanistan and a chance meeting of a Coldstream Guard who he done a course in the Brecon's with. He wished the Sgt well and told him to keep safe. This was the last Dean saw of his friend as he was killed. When Dean returned to the UK and was selected to become an instructor at Sandhurst. The process of selection was an 85km Tab across the Black Mountains this meant he was up to speed in his physical and mental fitness. He taught cadets from across the world. At the conclusion of his time at Sandhurst he returned to Battalion and found himself in the stores.Dean was promoted to Regimental Sgt Major and returned to Kabul which was different to his previous experiences in Afghanistan. He applied for and was subsequently selected for a late entrant commission. However, Dean undertook the new role of Command Sgt Major and the role meant that he went to Fort Bliss in El Paso where he attended the Sgt Majors course. Upon his return he was posted to Home Command and worked with the strategic military leaders. He served in post for 2 years.Having been promoted to the rank of Major, Dean undertook a role which effectively removed him from frontline duties and gave him a more detailed insight to defence procurement.Having just left the Army Dean was kind enough to take part in this podcast. We wish him well in his new role with NHS Wales. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

‘What is it that makes people go forward when every instinct is to go back? I think it's to do with the people you're with, not letting them down…' The tumble of rugged hills that shelter Port Stanley, the capital of the Falkland Islands, were to become the bleak setting for the final struggle of the conflict - break the Argentine lines and Stanley was there for the taking, the war would be done and dusted. Easier said than done - for the young men of the Scots and Welsh Guards, the Paras and Royal Marines the final days of the Falklands War were to be the toughest of their lives.   Narrated by Paul Waggott Written by Robin Scott Elliot Production and Sound Design by Holy Smokes Audio Executive Producers Tony Pastor + Neil Fearn A Goalhanger Podcasts Production Cast list: Alejandro Teran Thomas Mitchells Tim Skinner George Still Marta da Silva Gerardo Cabal Neizan Fernandez Darcey Ferguson Learn more about your ad choices. Fergus Williams is the CEO of Walking With The Wounded (WWTW), a UK charity that supports injured former members of the UK armed forces during their career transition from military to civilian life. Over the past decade, Fergus and his team have supported more than 15,000 veterans in the United Kingdom.   Fergus first served in the British Army for nine years as an infantry officer with the Welsh Guards, ending his career as a staff officer for HRH (His Royal Highness), The Prince of Wales. After leaving the Army, Fergus held several commercial positions, including running his own project management company in the banking and finance sector.    He leads WWTW with a culture that puts the customer first. This service culture was tested by the COVID-19 outbreak. But his team and he responded quickly and were able to contribute to the veterans online.Fergus started using the OKR (Objectives and Key Results) system to better manage his team remotely. He sets a goal for the team, and they pursue that goal without worrying about all the side issues. As a leader, he aims to create an environment where his team can grow and deliver quality services both in-person and online.During his time at the Royal Military Academy and as a soldier, Fergus learned the values of leadership. He realized that service is a privilege of leadership and that humility is the other key element. For him, it's all about listening to others' perspectives and bringing out the best in people. In this episode's Thought Leadership Spotlight segment, Pete Burbidge, General Manager of Dale Carnegie London and Southeast UK, explains how Dale Carnegie's principles led him to make a life-changing decision and move into action with a positive attitude. Like Fergus, Pete reminds us of the importance of standing by our decisions, facing the consequences, and learning from our mistakes if they occur.Join us and listen to Fergus's leadership insights on taking command of our decisions, leading with a people-first culture, gaining humility, and having a service mindset. Walking with the Wounded Joe Hart's Fundraising Link– London Marathon WWTW 2022

It was 30th May and the rusty liner the Canberra headed back into San Carlos water. On board were reinforcements from the 5th Infantry Brigade including the Gurkhas, the Scots and Welsh Guards. They had been collected from the QE2 liner which had docked at South Georgia with the Guards and the Gurkhas, from where they were collected by the Canberra. Also on board was the new commander, Major-General Jeremy Moore who was to take over from Brigadier Jeremy Thompson. The command post at San Carlos was the outside lavatory and cloakroom for the Port San Carlos Social Club in better times – and Moore surveyed his new HQ then headed out to talk to the troops.  The lack of Sea King helicopters meant the British forces were back on their transport equipment number ones, their boots. It was 3 Commando's Brigades' fate to continue to march across East Falkland, towards the chain of hills surrounding port Stanley. 45 commando had left San Carlos with 3 Para on the 27th May, and were plodding doggedly over the hills, marshes and streams towards Douglas settlement. That night, at ten pm, they collapsed into sleep after the 13 mile route march, across terrain that left 15 men injured – sprained ankles, pulled muscles, cracked bones. Meanwhile, Brigadier Thompson was worried. He knew that Mount Kent was strategically important and wanted it populated by British troops before the Argentinians woke up to its crucial role – should they send artillery spotters here the British would be vulnerable to observed artillery fire. For the next week, the Royal Navy devoted most of its attention to the problems of the 5 Brigade. On the afternoon of 3 June, the Welsh Guards began their long march to Goose Green from San Carlos, walking for 12 hours before the whole exercise was abandoned. The Guardsmen were not ready for this heavy going, and they were too heavily laden – and their snotracs broke down every few miles. Back they marched over Sussex Mountain. 3 Brigade sneered at the news – what a contemptable start they thought. Remember they were on the hills above Stanley, and now forced to hang around the freezing mountain waiting for 5 Brigade to get its act together. It was now that the fate of so many men was decided – the only other way for these soldiers to get to Fitzroy at speed was by sea – and to a scene of a tragedy that would be the worst loss of life in any single engagement for the British during the entire Falklands War.  Get bonus content on Patreon Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. Edward Elgar's incomparable Nimrod, and the part it plays in people's lives, is explored this week: Composed as part of the Enigma Variations in the latter part of the 19th century, Nimrod was inspired by Elgar's friend and music editor, Augustus Jaeger. In an interview for this programme, Jaeger's granddaughter, Gillian Scully, talks about her grandfather and describes hearing her own granddaughter playing Nimrod at a school concert. It wasn't what Elgar intended, but Nimrod is now - and, probably, forever - associated with Remembrance. The Right Reverend Nigel McCulloch - National Chaplain to the Royal British Legion - talks about hearing it played at the Festival of Remembrance in the Royal Albert Hall stirring memories of his own father who died in WW2, and serving as a reminder of all those lost or injured in war. Margaret Evison's son, Lieutenant Mark Evison of the Welsh Guards, was killed in Afghanistan in 2009. Nimrod played an important part in his funeral which was held at The Guard's Chapel in London. For Lord Victor Adebowale, Chief Executive of the charity Turning Point, Nimrod is a piece that reminds him of his father and the struggles he had as a Nigerian immigrant to the UK. Composer and conductor, Paul Spicer, plays through Nimrod at the piano exploring why it is a piece that stirs such deep emotions. Producer: Karen Gregor.

This week Libby Purves is joined by Fiona Stanford, Mark Henderson, Father Ray and Raymond Gubbay. Fiona Stanford is married to a high ranking army officer, a former commander of the Welsh Guards. Her book 'Don't Say Goodbye', is the story of the men and women who are left behind when their partners go to war, with first hand accounts from mothers, wives, girlfriends and children. She was prompted to write the book after the death of one of her closest friends husbands', Lieutenant Colonel Rupert Thorneloe who was killed in Afghanistan. Proceeds from the book will go to the Welsh Guards Afghanistan Appeal. 'Don't Say Goodbye' is published by Hodder & Stoughton. In 2003 Mark Henderson was one of eight backpackers taken hostage whilst trekking in the Colombian jungle. He was eventually released after 101 days. In a bizarre twist, eleven months after his release, Mark received an email from Antonio, one of his kidnappers. This email was the start of a five-year correspondence between hostage and kidnapper that eventually drew Mark back to the very jungle where he'd been held hostage, and to a meeting with his kidnapper. The documentary film 'My Kidnapper' is the film Mark made of this extraordinary reunion. Anglican priest Father Ray has been leading his central London parish for the last three years. He has transformed his parish, building a community where many struggle with feelings of anonymity. But now he is prepared to jeopardise all his work for the truth. In a 'First Cut' film for Channel 4, it follows him as he shares a personal secret with his congregation: that he is gay. First Cut: Father Ray Comes Out, is on Channel 4. Raymond Gubbay is the theatre producer and impresario, known for stripping back the elitist veneer from high culture events in Britain, and adding a bit of promotional sparkle. For his latest venture, he is once again bringing Puccini's 'Madam Butterfly' to the Royal Albert Hall, flooding it with 10,000 gallons of water to create a Japanese water garden setting, and playing to 9,000 people each night.
