GMP19: DingsDums Dumplings - Berlin's freshest solution against food waste

„We have to make it mainstream. Like there is no other way" - Anna Wohlrab, DingsDumsDumplings The topic of food waste - or better anti-food waste - has popped up a lot in my life lately - and I’m so grateful that (apart from all the daunting numbers of how much food is being wasted) it mainly came up with a positive solution in tow. Usually in the form of a dedicated group of people, who tackles this issue, without waiting until governments or the big players out there do something. They have an epiphany that there’s just too much food waste and we gotta do something about it. Baaam!  That’s exactly what happened to today’s interview guest & her co-founders. And I’m so excited that we finally make this interview happen with Anna from DingsDums Dumplings (@dingsdumsdumplings)! Saving food alone is great, but then there’s the question what to do with all these 5 million tons of edible food that us Germans throw away each year? How to turn them into something that’s tasty and extends its shelf life even further? Together the three young founders, Jillian, Mauritz and Anna found a way to make it happen: As DingsDums Dumplings, they are creating super delicious dumplings from surplus food. In this interview you'll learn about: The entire thought process & trial and error sessions that happened before the actual launch of DingsDums Dumplings The moment that triggered the three to quit their jobs & to do something about food waste How important it is to focus on the core thing: a strong product (that looks great, tastes delicious) How to deal with non-believers in your environment - and proving them all wrong One thing Anna is most proud of at the moment Who or what inspired her most on her way Her secrets to overcome challenges and always stay motivated How Jilliane creates new recipes on the spot over and over again How to be in for the long game Why it’s important to surround yourself with the right people The power of starting small & convincing the big players The meaning of being awarded by the Federal Government Some big future plans of DingsDums Dumplings, e.g. to conquer supermarkets And of course heaps of more personal anecdotes & insights Hope you’re ready for an episode that leaves you inspired & hungry for more! >> Now, without any further ado, get ready for Anna from DingsDums Dumplings  >> Show Notes & links mentioned: Connect with Anna, Jilliane & Mau on Facebook | on Instagram Podcast interview Mealsaver (Episode 7)  Federal Award: “Zu gut für die Tonne” Podcast interview SirPlus (Episode 17)  Zero waste café Isla Coffee Berlin Supporters' shout out: This episode has been supported by our friends at bookitgreen, who are - just as us - working to get people excited about greener ways of travelling. The wait is over! After a little summer break we’re back with a brand new episode. And I'm 100% sure that it’s going to switch on your inner light and belief in the good people in this world! What do you think: How can something so simple as a tiny sun-shaped solar lamp the impact the lives of billions of people ? Why can micro-entrepreneurship in sub-Saharan Africa be much more powerful than financial aid? How can anyone of us leverage the connections we have to be part of something that matters? And how can we keep up our flame of motivation when things get tough? That’s just a mini-preview of all the inspiration bombs Felix drops in this episode. Extremely proud to present you another Berlin-based certified B-Corp with a fascinating story. If you haven’t heard of it yet, Little Sun (@ilovelittlesun) is a social business spreading clean, affordable solar energy around the globe. Just a couple of mindblowing numbers to get you into the scene: Since Little Sun started in 2012, it has Sold 661,578 lamps sold worldwide Changed 1,648,386 lives off-grid Built up new opportunities for 600+ African entrepreneurs Saved an insane amount of $35,531,865 on energy expenses in off-grid households Reduced 134,572 tonnes of Co2 emissions That was in December 2017, so their impact has been growing even bigger since. Little Sun has also won a competition by the United Nations Development Program for access to clean energy in Senegal, launched the Little Sun Foundation and - an image that can hardly be topped in beauty - brought together artists, musicians, and activists in New York in the eve of COP23 to urge policymakers and political leaders to join the fight for climate action. Imagine 2,800 people holding up Little Sun’s, creating a collective work of art that stands for a solar-powered sunrise….. I loved chatting to Felix - he has such a bright personality, is full of integrity, radiates genuine excitement for the opportunities we have & adds exactly the right dose of humour to things - which I find is SO important to really move the needle forward and tackle the big problems out there. Plus, he’s a loving dad and shares so many personal insights about his journey Felix also mentions heaps of other great impact projects AND gives some big shout outs to you guys, the listeners - including a burning question that maybe some of you could help answer in the end. So make sure to listen carefully and check out the show notes. A quick moment to remind you that you can sign up to our newsletter to not miss any future episodes. Look forward to connecting! Making up for the long wait for a new episode, Claudi got Raphael Fellmer (@sirplus.de) in front of the mic. To many of you, especially those German-speakers, and those who are following the anti-food waste movement a bit, I probably don’t have to introduce him: He is one of Germany’s biggest food activists, he went on a money strike, he’s written a book called “Happy Without Money”, given tons of talks, co-founded the platform foodsharing.de - and now founded an amazing new startup, Germany’s first food outlet called SirPlus. Raphael and I only met last November at the re:Blog conference "re:MIND", that brought together around 100 influencers who care about sustainability, to discuss what sustainability actually means and how it could possibly work in big multinational companies... Raphael gave this super inspiring talk, loaded with passion, emotion, gratitude and just so authentic and powerful… I think everyone was totally captured. He’s someone I truly admire for his values, his beliefs and his perseverance. If everyone would be a little bit more like him, we could solve a lot of our world’s problems in no time. WHY WE NEED STARTUPS LIKE SIRPLUS? Raphael and his team are putting heaps of passion into SirPlus - and that’s really really necessary when we look at the numbers: 50% of edible food is being wasted in Europe! 50% ! In Germany, that's about 1 truck per minute - and with the food that's thrown away, we could feed all hungry people 4 times !! Sounds daunting, but Raphael Fellmer is the living proof that change is possible and everyone everywhere can do something. Want some positive numbers? SirPlus already saved more than 300 tons of food from landing in the bin = that equals 750,000 meals!! That’s huuuge - and it only started 6 months ago. They’re looking for a new shop space by the way, so if you know anything or have a space, get in touch! IN THIS PODCAST EPISODE, YOU'LL LEARN ABOUT: the story of Raphael’s 5-year moneystrike & a moneyless journey through Mexico what happened that led him to such a radical experiment the realization that there are two sides to money & other big learnings why he believes so strongly in our generation why overwriting what we learned can sometimes take a while the what’s, how’s & why’s of SirPlus empowering people to be the change they want to see in the world (like Ghandi said) the darks side and bright side in every human being the blessing of failure & how to grow from it why dogma entitlement & need to be replaced with compassion and empathy ...and heaps more! Promise, this episode will fire you up with energy & once you finished listening you gonna jump up and make change happen. Get ready for Raphael Fellmer from SirPlus!
