The Associate Education Minister says the Government, schools, parents and students all have a part to play in attendance. The Government's instructing schools to have Stepped Attendance Response plans by 2026. It comes as students around the country ditch school for the School Strike for Climate today. Associate Minister David Seymour told Mike Hosking schools should mark that as an unjustified absence. He says for people to keep their living standards and emit less, we need a lot of science, and school's a good place to learn that. Schools have also been instructed not to take teacher-only days in term time, unless authorised by the Minister. Seymour told Hosking the Government has a role in introducing more prosecutions and support for schools. He says the point of the STAR system is it sets out that the schools have a role - and they need to take that seriously. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The strike is demanding the coalition government to slow down the Fast Track Approvals Bill, keep the ban on oil and gas, uphold Te Tiriti o Waitangi, protect land and moana, and more.  It will also stand in solidarity with the call to free Palestine, demanding an end to Israel's occupation of Palestinian territories and calling for the New Zealand government to provide emergency humanitarian visas to Palestinians with family in Aotearoa.  Producer Sofia Roger Williams spoke to one of the organisers of the Tāmaki Makaurau strike, Sophora from Fridays for Future, about these demands, youth-led activism, and how people can get involved.

Episode 24 provides a brief overview of the ramping up of Jew-hating marches and rallies around the world and in Canada. As Tristin Hopper noted: "If you're referring to a protest that just wants to "stop the violence" in Gaza, you're referring to something that doesn't exist. By my read, there hasn't been a single "pro-Palestine" rally in this country that didn't carry a strong undercurrent of destroying Israel." Part 1- Cross-country Review: - a Hamas ally, the Samidoun group, continues to hold antisemitic protests in Vancouver; - an MP shamed "pro-Hamas protestors in Edmonton who celebrated the slaughter of Israeli civilians and called for a new intifada" and mocks his critics; - in Toronto crowds chanted in Arabic "smash the Zionists head" as Jews in that city hid their mezuzahs, saw their businesses targeted by mobs, and a school kid was told by a classmate 'do not look at my eyes, You are a Jew and inferior to Muslims'. 15:27 Part 2 - A CAF Vet Tells Defence Minister a Winnipeg Story A Twitter thread addressed to Bill Blair explains why, in 2018, the first public Menorah displayed by the CAF needed to be protected and secured instead of being placed outside the chapel. Hint: it wasn't because of "Islamophobia". 23.30 - Winnipeg Police met with the Jewish community and it couldn't have gone worse. We have the details. - The Jewish Federation, which has failed for years to represent the interests of local Israelis, arranged a 'safety meeting' last Wednesday but didn't prepare the cops for what "diversity" actually means in our Jewish community. The police got a earful in the Q and A because Israelis in Winnipeg take the harassment and antisemitic acts a lot more seriously than the 'organized Jewish leadership' and demanded protection. - On Friday, a vigil in Memorial Park for the hostages kidnapped by Hamas was harassed, and called 911. Unlike the corporate media- we tell what happened. ** We are YOUR watchdog! Support our work via paypal.com/paypalme/MartyGoldMedia ** 37:00- Part 3 - Local examples of Jewish students in Universities and public schools being intimidated - Retired lawyer Bill Narvey repeatedly challenged the Jewish Federation of Winnipeg to confront anti-Israel hate among faculty and student activists and published in college newspapers, noting "there have been more than several antisemitic confrontations against Jewish students." Will the Federation do anything? Based on the incident with the U of Winnipeg Collegiate basketball team, hell no. - We cite examples from 2 school divisions of Jewish parents complaining about offensive antisemitic conduct - including chants by students and comments by a teacher- and being ignored. -   There is a "High School Strike for Palestine" walkout on Monday being fronted by 'Queers for Palestine' and other groups under the guise of "anti-racism" to indoctrinate kids in "Anti-Zionism". We name the 4 schools initially recruited to demand "recognition of Israel as a settler colonial illegal occupation." Are teachers involved? cause that's what we heard. - What will school officials, police, RCMP, and Justin Trudeau do if support is espoused for banned terror groups like PFLP, which was seen at the Sunday #CeasefireNow march? It was extolled online by a former city council candidate. Are terrorist enabling groups like Samidoun behind the high school protest, preparing more pro-terrorist signs to be toted along by our children and spread hate? From a parent: "Students who are not participating need to be protected. The province & the city need to ensure resources are dispatched to every school where this is taking place (& hopefully the bill sent to organizers). Anger is mounting among parents of high school students missing out due to on-going teacher strikes. While primary school teachers have reached a settlement, secondary teachers rejected the latest Ministry of Education collective agreement offer. Two year levels each day are being rostered home, across four days of the week. A parent petition to the Ministry of Education and the PPTA went on line on Monday pleading to stop the rostered days off. Also, senior education lecturer at the University of Waikato, Dr Katrina McChesney who, while sympathising with parents and students, thinks the action is necessary to forestall further teacher shortages.

Why do discussions of overpopulation often elicit emotional responses of fear, anger, or indignation? Are anger and indignation what prevents productive discussion of population? These responses in a graduate college class provide an opportunity to explore how we might pave the way for productive conversations. Our guest in this episode, Professor Christopher Bystroff of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute wonders whether a “global therapy session” could end what he describes as a “global, sullen silence.” We need intelligent discourse on the subject, but too often it is being shut down. Open, honest, and factual discussion of the human overpopulation crisis can put an end to the myths, misassumptions and misinformation that cloud the subject. In this episode of The Autistic Culture Podcast:All cultures have icons and one of our favorite living Autistic Culture icons is climate activist, school striker, and Davos rabble-rouser, Greta Thunberg! In this episode, podcast hosts Angela and Matt discuss all things Greta - and yes, that includes her recent one-liner takedown of misogynist poster boy, Andrew Tate!“She's just like a kid with a crazy idea, using her special interests to save her life, which is what we do…And is being trolled by world leaders of some of the biggest and most important countries.” –AngelaGreta, who was diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and selective mutism at age 11, has become a global sensation for her work in the climate activism movement. Greta proudly displays common autism symptoms in women (which we call traits!).Greta's Autistic traits of pattern detection, logic, and justice-sensitivity affect the way she experiences the urgency of the climate crisis. In 2018, as a teenager, Thunberg started protesting for climate action by skipping school on Fridays, which sparked a global youth climate protest movement: "School Strike for Climate.” Consequently, she was named Time magazine's Person of the Year in 2019. The hosts admire Thunberg's Autistic intense focus on her interests, honesty, and unwillingness to compromise her message to be polite or popular—qualities that are highly valued by individuals on the autism spectrum. They also discuss how Thunberg was bullied and dismissed by world leaders and others, but maintained her conviction. “We don't have the option of just going with things because we inevitably stand out. So we have a very, very different profile of strengths and weaknesses. And I present this to people like, look at Superman. Superman is strong enough to push around the moon, but his weakness is a green rock.” –MattThe podcast highlights an incident where Thunberg cleverly responded on Twitter to sexist taunts from influencer Andrew Tate, leading to his arrest. Matt and Angela praise Thunberg as an important figure in Autistic culture who models integrity, focus, and self-acceptance.Greta is proud of her autism and considers it a superpower. She is a symbol of Autistic pride and has earned the support and admiration of Autistic children, teens, and adults. Despite criticism and hate, Greta continues to spread her message of the urgency of the climate crisis and has been a voice of individualism in the movement. I'll be honest. I was intimidated by the prospect of this interview. Plus, I never believed it would *actually* happen. I was going to get to speak to arguably the most famous activist on the planet? Yeah, right. As if.But then - it happened! And Greta Thunberg - the founder of the School Strike for Climate movement who has been nominated three times for a Nobel Prize - was an absolute revelation. She is a deeply intelligent and thoughtful 19-year-old: someone who takes issues seriously but never herself. I laughed SO MUCH more than I thought I would during this conversation. And I learned a lot too - about the climate crisis, yes, but also about what drives this extraordinary young woman and what she thinks of 'failure' on a personal and a global level. We talk about her failure to be a 'normal' teenager, her failure to get politicians to act and how she copes with being trolled by Presidents. Plus what she *really* thinks of everyone from King Charles to Emmanuel Macron. And: her love of carrots.Whatever your preconceptions might be, leave them at the door. Ep. 28 (Part 2 of 2) | David Loy, Zen teacher, scholar, and prolific author, reveals his acute understanding of the crises we face today, the psychology at the root of the problems, and how we can make our way forward in this in-depth discussion. He has adopted the term ecodharma to focus attention on the challenge Buddhism faces now: integrating personal transformation with global activism and social transformation. As David points out, the focus needs to be on this world, with transcendence being a metaphorical understanding but not an excuse to abandon the problems we and our planet face today.  Besides gaining great depth of knowledge from being a scholar and student of koans, David's insights come from a plethora of nondual experiences, which led David on a path of eco-action. Ecodharma asks: How does Buddhism need to change? How much is dwelling in emptiness becoming problematical in these challenging times? What's best for the Earth? Everyone says practice, practice, practice…when is the performance? Is evolutionary pressure going to create a new way of living sustainably? Recorded February 22, 2020.  “When your sense of separation dissipates, it becomes not what's in it for me, but what can I do to help make this a better world for everybody?” Note: Regrettably 4 minutes of the recording were irretrievably lost at minute 21:26, but thankfully, the recording resumes just as Roger succinctly sums up the previous minutes of conversation. Also, this podcast was recorded live and includes, at times, some extraneous noises in the background.
