The next federal election could be conducted under dramatically reformed electoral laws, with caps on spending and donations, and a much lower disclosure threshold for the disclosure of donations. The changes, being worked up by Special Minister Don Farrell, would also trim the wings of third parties, such as Simon Holmes à Court's Climate 200. Farrell tells The Conversation's Politics Podcast he is not waiting for the final report of the parliamentary Joint Standing Committee on Electoral Matters, which in its interim report has recommended a set of reforms broadly in line with Labor policy. The report was tabled on Monday. Farrell says waiting until the final report comes at the end of the year would make it harder to get legislation in place for the next election, due by May 2025. He will have negotiations over the coming months and wants as much bipartisanship as possible, despite the Coalition opposing key recommendations of the majority report.

Van Badham and Ben Davison do their FINAL Week on Wednesday LIVE at Adelaide Fringe with special guest South Australian Aboriginal Affairs Minister and Attorney General Kyam Maher discussing how South Australia became the first part of Australia to create a Voice to parliament and what lessons it provides for the national Voice referendum. Van and Ben also look at how Peter Dutton has decided to frame the AUKUS deal, which was started when he was Defence Minister, as a choice between funding the NDIS or building submarines.  The false choice framework is explored as is the jobs that BOTH programs are providing to workers in Australia and the need to fully fund our society.  You can join your union, whether you're a care worker or a ship builder or any kind of worker, at australianunions.org.au/wow The New South Wales election is less than two weeks away and Van and Ben break down Perrottet's half billion dollar voucher program and contrast it against Minn's $400m commitment to "fully fund" public schools and "end the war on teachers". Plus there is good news about the death of "Rambo" and Billbies! Van manages to give shout outs to our www.buymeacoffee.com/weekonwednesday Cadre and Extend the Reach supporters and all the Adelaide Fringe folk who have made these shows possible.

Is Erich Abetz trawlin' out of control? Even if not, this yarn is legit. SOME NOTES: Further contextualising Abetz in this story are his swift attacks on Greenpeace Australia and environmentalists in general, which he made almost immediately after stepping into the office of ‘Special Minister for Fisheries, Forestry and Conservation’ for the Howard Cabinet in 2006. Was it because he accurately foresaw such activists as potential impediments to his future supertrawler conspiracy with Parlevliet and Van Der Plast? I think I said on the recording that Abetz invented his role as Special Minister - THIS IS FALSE. It is true however, that he was the last to hold that office, as it was mysteriously abolished after his occupation. Could it be though, that he engineered the closure of the department in order to grant himself permanent title of ‘most recent Fisheries Minister’… whereby appointing himself as undisputed chief parliamentary advisor to any future government on all things fishing? Such circumstances would surely enable legal flexibility for any corporation with which he was associated? There are a lot of potentially nefarious loose ends about this story and nothing seems out of the question. I would like to make it abundantly clear that I'm not making any official allegations but it is in my view an inarguably compelling narrative which appears yet unresolved. www.everydaygreen.org

Following recommendations from the joint standing committee on electoral matters, the government has amended its Senate reform bill to include provision for optional preferential voting “below the line” as well as “above the line”. Special Minister of State Mathias Cormann explains the details of the changes and says the bill “empowers the Australian people to determine what happens to their votes and their preferences”. “What it does is it will help ensure that the result at the next Senate election and any subsequent Senate election reflects the will of the people.”
