The Daintree Rainforest, located on the northeastern coast of Queensland, is amongst the most pristine rainforests globally. Over 10 million years older than the Amazon Rainforest, the Daintree is part of the Wet Tropics of Queensland. This forms the largest contiguous rainforest in Australia.Countless endemic species of avifauna are found in the Daintree, such as the golden bowerbirds, tooth-billed and lovely fairywrens. Moreover, the rainforest also has a relatively stable population of southern cassowary, for which it was listed as an Important Bird Area by BirdLife International. Unfortunately, climate change, habitat fragmentation, rural development, and the spread of invasive and feral species severely threaten the Daintree. In this episode, I speak to Branden Barber, the CEO of Rainforest Rescue on the conservation of the Daintree Rainforest. He elaborates upon the cultural importance of the Daintree, threats, and Rainforest Rescue's conservation efforts. This is a public episode. Dr David Daintree is director of the Christopher Dawson Centre for Cultural Studies in Australia. In this conversation we discuss the state of Western civilisation and its important features, perhaps the most important one that it is grounded in a material and spiritual reality that cannot be changed by our perception and only ignored to our detriment. David took a BA from the University of New England, an M Litt from Cambridge and his PhD in Tasmania. His academic background is in Classics, and his specialisation medieval Latin. Dr Daintree was Principal of Jane Franklin Hall, a college of the University of Tasmania, from 1984 to 2002. From then to 2008 he was Rector of St John's College in the University of Sydney, and after this President of Campion College: Australia's only Liberal Arts college. Dr Daintree has been a visiting professor at both the Universities of Siena and Venice, and a visiting fellow at St. John's College, University of Manitoba, Canada. In 2013, at the invitation of Archbishop Julian Porteous, he became founding Director of the Christopher Dawson Centre for Cultural Studies. In 2017 he was made a Member of the Order of Australia in the Queen's Birthday Honours List. David is married to Elizabeth.

In this episode, I wanted to introduce our listeners to an organisation that I love; one of our amazing impact partners.   Rainforest Rescue is a not-for-profit organisation that has been protecting and restoring rainforests since March 1999 by providing opportunities for individuals and businesses to Protect Rainforests Forever.   Their projects re-establish rainforests through planting, maintenance, and restoration programs, as well as purchasing and protecting high conservation value rainforest and preserving its biodiversity   The majestic Daintree Rainforest is their key client, if I can put it that way. The forest they love, learn from and invest most of their time to protect.   I interview Rainforest Rescue's CEO Branden Barber and Partnerships Director Kristin Canning. Both of their bios are below. It was a wonderful opportunity for me – and I hope, n turn, for you – to learn more about the Daintree and Rainforest Rescue's efforts in collaboration with their partners, to protect it forever.   Here are some of the highlights:   Branden introduces us to Rainforest Rescue, including the history of how it started and why it exists. He and Kristin share with us the impact that Rainforest Rescue are creating and some of the ways in which the Forest is a teacher. Branden touches on the UN's decade of restoration and what that means. We learn a bit about some of the new investment schemes coming out that are supportive of restoration and that go way beyond Carbon Credits, including the Government's Nature Credit Scheme, Reef Credits and Cassowary Credits and the Land Restoration Fund. Branden describes the importance of the work that Rainforest Rescue is doing with the Traditional Owners of the land, the Jabalbina Aboriginal Land Corporation, representing the Eastern Kuku Yalanji; and their desire to do more and learn more from them. For those listeners who enjoy learning how people of impact came to do what they're doing, both Kristin and Branden share their respective journeys that led them to work with Rainforest Rescue. Why Rainforest Rescue? What makes them unique and so appealing as an impact partner for businesses as well as individuals. Why business partnerships are so vital to Rainforest Rescue and the confidence it gives them to take on some mighty risks. The 1% Profits to Rainforest Rescue Program which opens partnerships up from small business all the way to large corporates. The necessity of setting big audacious and scary goals. Branden shares a bit about one of their projects, Lot 1 Cape Tribulation Road And if you're looking for some great Christmas gifts, take a look at their wonderful merchandise here

The capture of carbon dioxide, water, and sunlight to make glucose, the essential molecule of life. The other chapters discuss how all other molecules of life, including carbohydrates, proteins, and hormones, are built from glucose, and how maximizing photosynthesis is the key to building healthy cells and regenerating soils. The book also covers the importance of managing cover crops and weeds, as well as balancing minerals to ensure optimal plant growth. The author stresses that dead plants and bare soil do not photosynthesize, and that the more plants put in an area, the better, even if they are regarded as obnoxious weeds, as they provide the most organic matter and molecules of life. The author also discusses how managing water and nutrients is essential in growing healthy plants, and how nutrient deficiencies and excesses can be corrected to ensure optimal plant growth. For the latest episode in our Living in Harmony podcast series, we spoke to Barney Swan, a polar explorer and Nature-based solutions expert who is currently leading a restoration project in Daintree, Australia – the world's oldest rainforest and home to a unique range of flora and fauna. Barney was born in London but, aged six, he and his family moved to an off-grid community in Daintree to live closer to, and in harmony with, Nature. This experience shaped Barney's appreciation for the natural world and his understanding of its finite resources. This is why, after years of travelling and living in various parts of the world, he returned to the rainforest to restore and protect a place that played such a huge role in determining who he is today. To broaden his global impact, Barney started the charity ClimateForce. Its mission is to equip businesses, students and citizens with sustainable development strategies to help reduce CO2 emissions and regenerate the planet, both on land and in the ocean.

So often we associate science and technology as something we design today, that creates the future we hope to exist in tomorrow. We automatically envision lab coats, and microscopes, or the Elon Musk's of the world in factories controlled by robots with the common narrative being that we must invent, innovate and iterate to land on the solutions we need to create a better world. On the flip side, we see cultural art, music and creative expression as something that holds the ropes of history, rather than the threads of the future. We see images of indigenous paintings, we buy boomerangs in our tourist shops, and occasionally hear the rumble of the didgeridoo at an event. We celebrate culture, but maybe not venerate it as a vital part of moulding our collective future. What if our ancient cultures and first nations people all over the world had key insights into science, technology and harnessing creativity to build a better future before we were even thinking about it? As leaders, entrepreneurs and business owners if we considered these cultures, as our business consultants how would we build, design and deploy our offerings in a different way?Today's guest is Luke Briscoe. He is CEO of Indigi Lab and a proud Kuku-Yalanji man from Daintree in Far Northern Australia. For the past twenty years, he has been leading cultural change and organisational transformation across numerous sectors. On this episode of 'the Nostalgic Vagabond' podcast, I talk with Emma Krebs.  Emma is a lovely, friendly Canadian girl. She's still in her early twenties, so I am old in comparison and find myself sometimes today referring to people of a similar university age, like Emma is, as "kids" but not Emma. She has a wisdom, maturity, and a level of self-esteem as well as common sense far beyond her years. Whether this has anything to do with her unquenchable curiosity (so much so that she had to create and host her own podcast) or to do with her vagabonding experiences touring Australia for 10% of her life (at that time) is something we're going to discuss.  In conversation, I ask why Australia? (6:25) Why go there? Emma shares what a typical viewpoint of Australia is for someone not born and raised there, like myself. We reflect on reading 'Vagabonding' which is a travel bible by Rolf Potts and how certain types of travellers can be different from many people in society, leading to feelings of disconnection (14:00) from the mainstream.  Emma shares a brief chronology of what she got up to during her two-year jaunt around Australia (18:25) notably her WWOOFING in the Daintree rainforest, farmwork in Queensland (34:00) and being broke-as in Melbourne. Travelling is not always super fun, chilled or even glamorous you see. You can be hot, sweaty, hungry and afraid of spiders all at the same time. But it's certain moments even beyond these that can have an impact (22:30) and Emma is generous enough to share them openly as well as what living out of a backpack for two years (27:50) will teach you. We then challenge that whole stranger-danger narrative we were both fed as kids, growing up (29:30) too.  I was curious to find out from Emma whether two years of life university in Australia would be better than actual uni (32:25) and what her best and worst moments were in her Aussie adventure (44:20).  Emma rounds out the chat by answering how travel has helped her evolve into the kind of Emma she is today (50:00) and whether her experiences abroad have helped her establish or re-establish her connection to society and herself...  Enjoy.   Don't forget to check out Emma's podcast, 'the Curious One' which is available everywhere and follow her on Instagram @thecuriousonepodcast too.     A big thanks to Tom Forfar for creating the title tracks for the podcast series.
