The prosecution of Steven Donziger, which has been condemned by the United Nations, Greenpeace, Amnesty International, Amazon Watch, and 64 Nobel Laureates, was a literal corporate prosecution. After the Southern District of New York refused to prosecute Donziger, the judge assigned a corporate firm which had represented Chevron to go after him. Melissa Stangl holds a Master's Degree in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania, USA. After several years conducting brain and lung cancer research and gaining managerial experience across a wide range of businesses, her interests turned toward the healing power and responsible use of plant medicines and psychedelics, and working with the wisdom traditions and cultures that steward them. She is also Co-founder of the Soltara Community Platform, a conscious community platform centered around holistic healing and plant medicine preparation & integration.Melissa serves on the Advisory Board of the Elected Leaders Collective and collaborates with multiple organizations in the field through her work at Soltara, including the Chacruna Institute, Amazon Watch, the Indigenous Reciprocity Initiative, Imperial College, Johns Hopkins, New York State Psychiatric Institute, Amazon Rainforest Conservancy, Heroic Hearts Projects, VETS Inc., and more recently, has been working with other centers in Costa Rica to form a national alliance of ayahuasca centers to support the implementation of frameworks for ethical standards, approaches, education, and political advocacy. She is passionate about using her technical, managerial, and problem-solving skills to help bridge the gap between the Western world and the incredible healing potential of plant medicines, their traditions, and a holistic approach to health.Episode Highlights▶ How Melissa went from the corporate world doing cancer research to finding her passion for ayahuasca ▶ The power of integration after using plant medicine▶ The work Melissa does at Soltara and the focus on integration▶ The importance of psychedelic-informed bodyworkers, holistic practitioners, or somatic therapists.▶ The challenges and realities of running a retreat center▶ Cultural sensitivity in psychedelic practices▶ Healers' perspectives on sharing medicine globally▶ The role of ayahuasca in global healing▶ The work Melissa does in her retreat center and what she has planned for the futureMelissa Stangl's Links & ResourcesWebsite: https://soltara.coInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/soltarahealingcenter/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/soltarahealingcenter/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@soltaraTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@soltarahealingcenterSoltara Plant Medicine + Holistic Healing Toolkit-Support your healing journey with frameworks, practical tools, plant medicine resources, and holistic practices you can incorporate into your everyday life:https://soltara-healing-center.ck.page/0ac9267848 Download Beth's free business trainings here: Integrating Psychedelics & Sacred Medicines Into a Transformational Business:https://bethaweinstein.com/psychedelics-in-businessClarity to Clients: Start & Grow a Transformational Coaching, Healing, Spiritual, or Psychedelic Business https://bethaweinstein.com/grow-your-spiritual-business ▶ Beth's Programs & Courses: https://bethaweinstein.com/services▶ Beth on Instagram: http://instagram.com/bethaweinstein▶ Beth Weinstein on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bethw.nychttps://www.facebook.com/BethWeinsteinbiz▶ Join the free Psychedelics & Purpose Community: https://www.facebook.com/groups/PsychedelicsandSacredMedicines
This week Neal Brennan returns to Working It Out in celebration of his new Netflix special, “Crazy Good.” Neal and Mike go deep on what to do when friendship isn't reciprocated, what all comics have in common with Seinfeld, and the irrelevance of the question “Is Kevin Hart humble?” All that, plus the listener email Mike received in response to his joke about joining a cult. Please consider donating to Amazon Watch
In this episode of The Founder Spirit, the trailblazing Atossa Soltani, Founder and Board President of Amazon Watch, shares her journey of becoming a leading voice in protecting the Amazon rainforest and defending the rights of its indigenous population. She discusses her formative experiences witnessing the Iranian Revolution, and also talks about her aha moment when the Gaia Hypothesis really resonated with her. She highlights the Amazon rainforest, the heart of our planet, being at an irreversible tipping point, and the urgent need to reverse deforestation. As the current Director of Global Strategy at Amazon Sacred Headwaters, an alliance of 30 Indigenous nations to permanently protect 86 million acres of rainforests in the most biologically diverse ecosystem on Earth, Atossa also underscores the outsized role that the Indigenous Peoples play in protecting Gaia as environmental defenders, and the lessons from their worldviews and traditional knowledge. She acknowledges that in order to realize a grander vision for the world, it requires a paradigm shift in our collective consciousness from material wealth to collective harmony and wellbeing, and a holistic perspective that recognizes the sacredness of life and our interconnectedness with nature. By mimicking nature's genius and adopting nature's principles, we can create a world that is in harmony with the web of life.Just how did Atossa become a leading voice in protecting the Amazon Rainforest and defending rights of its Indigenous population? Rob Moore was riddled with debt before reinventing himself to become a multi millionaire property investor, world champion, author of 19 books including his latest, 'Money Matrix' and the host of Disruptors with over 1000 episodes serving over 3 million subscribers across platforms. This episode turns the tables on Rob from interviewer to interviewee as we peek behind the curtain of Rob Moore. This is a deeply personal episode with Rob who has a very public face for millions as regards his mission and passion to create global impact and educate as many people as possible to manage and enhance their personal finances. Rob shares his early memories of watching his father (his role model) deal with mental health issues and the impact it had on him to push himself through intense feelings of shame in order to strive and make personal changes in his life. Rob understands that he has become a successful financial provider for his loved ones and his expanding team across fourteen businesses. With this responsibility comes an increased sense of accountability and personal purpose. Rob and I candidly discuss a number of his proudest moments in life and also his thoughts on the difference between being liked and respected. Rob never refers to himself as a leader and this episode requires Rob to think about his own style of leadership across 14 businesses with an extreme focus on leading self, first and foremost which Rob explains is all about managing emotions with extreme self awareness. For Rob, leadership is about how many people you nurture and lift up not how many direct reports you may have. Rob understands the difference between being liked and respected. He used to do all he could to be liked as it is much easier to be liked. To be respected requires a level of challenge with care. He now focuses on being respected based on the clear and non negotiable standards he holds for himself and those who are part of his businesses. Rob's best advice for entrepreneurs in a world that is constantly changing features in his new book 'Money Matrix' where he outlines the 4 stages of wealth. Make it, Manage it, Multiply it and Maintain it. Start Ups need to 'start now and get perfect later.' More mature businesses need to rekindle their start up spirit and avoid slowness. If the pace of change external to your business is faster than the pace of change within your business, it's all over! Money loves speed and hates friction and therefore will inevitable become more digitised centrally which Rob explains carries certain dangers where we become the product and susceptible to unwanted levels of control. Rob tells me that the biggest misconception about money is that money is not one of the biggest issues in our lives. This fuels Rob's passion to help educate as many people as possible to learn how to build and manage their wealth. Always pay yourself first Rob explains, never spend more than you earn. He outlines a simple procedure where each of us must save a third, invest a third and spend a third. As part of Rob's role as the host of Disruptors, he has interviewed numerous guests including the eclectic and controversial. Guests include the Tate Brothers, David Icke, Chris Eubank, Will.I.Am, Jordon Peterson, Dan Wootton, Grant Cardone, Katie Hopkins and many more. I ask him what he has learned from recently spending 7 hours interviewing the Tate brothers post their recent arrest. You may be surprised at this answer. www.rob.teamMoney Matrix is available from Amazon Watch & Subscribe:
Chapter 28: The Life Manual for Finding Stewardship in your 20's Maybe you've been saying you want a new job for months, but you still haven't started applying. Or, maybe you open your computer to check your bank account, but you just can't get yourself to do it. Maybe you need to move out, but you're avoiding scheduling apartment tours. We've all been there–pushing away these big, scary things in our 20s because we don't want to deal with them. But we all know that if you don't preside over your fears, they'll only continue to grow. Like guest speaker, Shelyna Brown, says: just like a judge in a courtroom, you have the power to preside over your own life. Shelyna is a visionary leader and advocate for justice. With a two-decade career as a public defender and respected Superior Court judge in Santa Clara, she has since founded the Equality and Social Justice Committee to mentor the next generation of young leaders at San Jose State University. As an author and speaker, Shelyna offers all of us 20-something-year-olds incredible insight into how to preside over our own lives and take control over our realities. Together, we'll be chatting about how to take radical responsibility for your healing, preside over your fears, make big decisions with ease, and trust that the universe has your back. THIS EPISODE'S SYLLABUS STEPS: Shelyna's steps on how to take control of your life: Assess your mindset. Ask yourself: Am I presiding over my mindset? Am I choosing my reality? Assess your heartset. Ask yourself: What is it I believe about myself? Assess your skill set. Ask yourself: Am I doing the things I want to be doing? Really sit down and love yourself. Here are some action items to remind yourself what you're here in this world to do, being uniquely you: Meditate and get quiet with yourself Find an accountability partner with whom you can share your goals and keep each other accountable For more guidance: Visit Shelyna's website and Instagram Check out Shelyna's book, Preside, available on Amazon Watch her recent TEDx Talk Don't forget to follow us on IG and Tiktok @regardlessthepod. In episode 198 America Adapts, we're partnering with Forerunner, a software company that works with local governments to help them with disaster management, flood risk and adapting to future impacts of climate change. Our discussion will feature insights from floodplain managers operating in both riverine flooding areas and coastal flood zones. These flooding experts are on the ground, finding ways to help their communities with extreme flooding and changes expected with a changing climate. The episode delves into the increasing role of technology in their work, emphasizing the crucial aspects of communication and outreach to garner community support for the establishment of effective flood prevention programs. Susannah Pho, co-founder of Forerunner, shares with us how climate analytics and technology are helping some of these front line adapters, in this case, flood plain managers, to do their jobs more effectively. Deep in the Ecuadorian Amazon, and scattered sparsely across the Columbian and Peruvian borders, reside the Indigenous people of the Kichwa Nation. With more than 400 organized communities comprised of ayllus — groups of families — the Kichwa clans currently retain the rights to over 1,115,000 hard-won hectares in and around the rainforest. And they're mere minor landowners. After working and communing with Kichwa activist Leo Cerda for several days in his home village, host Tate Chamberlin and Cerda ventured back out of the verdant depths to meet with esteemed Amazon Watch founder and fellow activist Atossa Soltani at her hotel in the urban center of Quito to discuss the past, present, and future of the Amazon—the thrumming, thumping heart of the planet.

In episode 194 of America Adapts, we take a deep dive on climate risk and the insurance sector. Earlier in the fall host Doug Parsons attended a two day conference hosted at American University in Washington DC. The conference was organized by Environmental Defense Fund, SBP and American University. The event brought together experts that focus on the role of insurance when it comes to building equity in disaster recovery, reducing future losses, expanding coverage with new innovations, and managing increasing climate-related disasters. You'll hear the need for insurance companies to conduct climate risk analysis and the role of government in addressing these issues. Experts at this conference laid the intellectual groundwork on where the insurance industry will need to go and you'll hear highlights in this episode. Bioneers: Revolution From the Heart of Nature | Bioneers Radio Series
Ecuadorians have voted to ban oil drilling in one of the most biodiverse places on the planet, the Yasuní National Park, situated in the Amazon rainforest. This historic vote will hopefully set an important precedent for the future of climate policy. To celebrate this historic win, we're revisiting some voices from those on the front lines of protecting the Amazon. If the rate of destruction doesn't change, by the year 2020 most of the Amazon ecosystem – the lungs of the planet – will be destroyed or irreparably damaged. But not if these visionary leaders can help it. Amazon Watch founder Atossa Soltani has supported local indigenous peoples to protect the rainforest and their lifeways. Legendary rainforest champion Marina Silva , Brazil's past Minister of the Environment and Presidential candidate, offers deep wisdom and vision.
In the first half-hour, Tiokasin speaks with Elizabeth Woody (Warm Springs, Yakama and Diné), executive director since 2018 of The Museum at Warm Springs in Warm Springs, Oregon. The Museum opened its doors to the public on March 14, 1993 and is celebrating its 30th anniversary throughout 2023 with special exhibits, public programs and events. Built to Smithsonian Institution professional standards, The Museum's mission is to preserve, advance and share the traditions, cultural and artistic heritage of The Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs, Oregon. Elizabeth is an internationally renowned poet, author, essayist and visual artist. She is also an educator, mentor, collaborator and community leader. In 2016, Elizabeth became the first Native American to be named Oregon's Poet Laureate. Find out more about The Museum at Warm Springs at museumatwarmsprings.org In the second half-hour, Tiokasin talks with Charles Lyons and Christian Poirier about Charles' July 11, 2023 article for the environmental news site Mongabay, titled “Six months on, the Yanomami crisis continues amid rising violence.” The article was produced with funding from Earth Journalism Network. Charles, who is based in Rio de Janeiro, is a multimedia journalist and filmmaker. He is currently making a documentary film about former U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon. He is senior consultant for Amazon Aid Foundation. Last year, Charles produced coverage of the 2022 Brazilian election for PBS NewsHour, which included two long-form reports –– one on deforestation in the Amazon; the other on Indigenous rights. Prior to that, he received an Alfred P. Sloan Foundation grant to produce and edit coverage of the pandemic in Brazil, also for PBS NewsHour. He is currently writing a series of articles on illegal gold mining in Amazonian countries for Mongabay. Christian Poirier is a senior member of Amazon Watch's team. Having coordinated the Brazil Program since 2009, Christian helped lead international solidarity campaigns to halt the construction of large Amazon dams and to call on the global private sector to cease its complicity in environmental destruction and human rights abuses in the Amazon. He has more than 20 years of experience in the fields of international development and advocacy, focusing on environmental, agrarian, and social justice issues. Brian DeJong speaks about his biography of Arthur Franklin Perkins, a Presbyterian minister serving in Merrill, Wisconsin in the 1920's and 1930's. For his bold stand for truth, and against error and unbelief, Perkins was persecuted and prosecuted by his own Presbytery. Leaving the PCUSA in 1936, he became a constituting member of the Orthodox Presbyterian Church and the convener and first moderator of the its Presbytery of Wisconsin and Upper Michigan. After suffering a nervous breakdown, he died on December 29, 1936. This is his tragic and triumphant story about standing against tyranny in his day and age. Nutrition 2. Environment 3. Ethics Diana shares how they chose the bucket topics and how the order was chosen. In her book, Sacred Cow she does a wonderful job explaining it in the most understandable way. You can find her book HERE We have all heard the rumor that “Americans eat too much meat”, well Diana debunks that myth and shares some other shocking numbers with the listeners and she also explains the optimal amount of protein needed and why beef is such a great option. She also explains why meat is so important in fulfilling your micronutrient dietary needs. She likes to use Chronometer to track micronutrients. You can find the Cronometer HERE. Another topic that comes up often is that red meat is considered a carcinogenic. She breaks down the scale of how the rating compares to other daily activities and the percentages so that listeners can make an informed decision on if the value of red meat outweighs the risk. Spoiler alert… Diana, Caitlin and Sophia all agree that red meat has some extremely wonderful prosperities that our bodies need especially when TTC or breastfeeding. Should you spend the extra money on grass fed beef? Today's episode covers this topic from a nutritional perspective and an ethical standpoint. Diana shares her advice on what you should be eating if you are trying to conceive. This conversation with Amy Westervelt and Paul Paz y Miño examines and condemns the extreme charges that have been used against Cop City protestors, Steven Donziger, and others for defending people and the planet. In the first half of the discussion, we talk about Chevron's brutal legal assault against those who have tried to hold the company accountable for its deliberate pollution of Ecuador, focusing on the use of the RICO Act against Steven Donziger. We then shift our discussion to the insane domestic terrorism charges for 42 protestors involved in the Stop Cop City movement and potential RICO indictments in the coming days, explaining how these charges are part of a dangerous trend of escalating legal tactics that the state and corporations use to suppress dissent. Paul Paz y Miño is the associate director of Amazon Watch, an environmental org that works with Indigenous communities in the rainforest. They were listed as a non-party co-conspirator in the RICO case against Donziger.Amy Westervelt is an investigative climate journalist who hosts a number of amazing podcasts including Drilled, Damages, Rigged, and Hot Take. IN THIS REPEAT: Here's an interview I recently had about The Lion's Country, a book by Charlie Starr that came out in late 2022. - - - - The Lion's Country: C.S. Lewis's Theory of the Real (released in December 2022) by Charlie Starr is somewhat of a follow-up to The Faun's Bookshelf (released in 2018). In this podcast interview with William O'Flaherty, Charlie first explains the difference between the two, before providing a brief glimpse into The Lion's Country itself. While the topic deals with deep philosophical issues, Charlie's book (and the interview) provides clear and understandable explanations for the average person that those versed in the topic can appreciate. Cleyson Juruna stands at the edge of the Xingu river, staring out over the water. He's the young chief of the Juruna people, who have lived in the Amazonian state of Pará for generations. “The Xingu River is our life,” he said. "She's our mother. Our arms and legs. It's our means of transportation and our food."But in recent years, times have been hard.In 2016, a new hydroelectric dam began to wreak havoc on the river, decreasing water levels by 80% and killing tons of fish, a major source of food for Cleyson and his people. Now, the Juruna face yet another threat. Cleyson Juruna stands at the edge of the Xingu river. Credit: Michael Fox/The World Just upstream from their territory, the Canadian mining company Belo Sun hopes to open the largest open-pit gold mine in the Amazon. The company says the location contains almost 4 million ounces of gold, worth more than $8 billion.Belo Sun general manager Rodrigo Costa told The World in an email that the operation would "promote sustainable development" by providing 7,000 jobs, tax revenue, infrastructure and socio-environmental projects. But Cleyson Juruna said the mine would be a disaster.“Belo Sun is here to practically end the lives of the native peoples who live here: the Juruna and the Arara,” he said. He pointed to a map. Roughly 6 miles divide the location of the planned mine from Paquisamba Indigenous land, where Cleyson and his people live. In the middle is the Xingu River.“If there were any type of tragedy,” he said, “any leak of something toxic, it would contaminate the entire region, the communities and Indigenous territories. Ours and others downstream." The Juruna people live within the Paquisamba territory in the Brazilian Amazon. Credit: Michael Fox/The World Belo Sun says the mine was designed to have zero environmental impact. General manager Rodrigo Costa told The World that "there will be no discharge of effluents into the environment, which is an industrial practice in organized and responsible gold mining."But environmental and Indigenous activists are not taking chances. In December, the San Francisco-based nongovernmental organization Amazon Watch released a report underscoring the dangers of the project. It accused Belo Sun executives of spreading misleading information and downplaying risks.Indigenous leaders protested against the mine at a Biodiversity Conference in Montreal last month."People need to understand that this mine will not just impact the state of Pará and the Indigenous peoples, it will impact the world,” Indigenous leader Puyr Tembé said at the conference. "You will feel the impact. Humanity needs to wake up.” Indigenous leader Cleyson Juruna says the gold mining project would be a disaster for his people. Credit: Michael Fox/The World But not all community members are against the mine.In a 2017 video from Belo Sun's Facebook page, residents of the town of Ressaca, near the mining site, rallied in favor of the project. “We have miners, farmers and fishermen who depend on development,” said a man in a white cowboy hat. Behind him, someone held a sign reading,"Make our opinion count."Belo Sun officials say local communities approved the project in a series of local consultation processes held over the last decade. But Indigenous and environmental activists say those meetings were flawed, with residents pressured, and local Indigenous communities never gave the green light for the project.Mining in the Amazon comes in the form of both large-scale projects like Belo Sun's Volta Grande mine, and from illegal wildcat miners who have pushed onto Indigenous territories in recent years.Brazil's new President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has called for sustainability and vowed to end wildcat mining.“We're going to stop any possibility of illegal mining. We need more than just a law. It needs to be a declaration of faith,” Lula said on the campaign trail. A gold store in Boa Vista, Brazil, Wednesday, Nov. 3, 2021. Gold illegally mined in the rainforest mixes into the supply chain and melds with clean gold to become almost indistinguishable. Credit: Andre Penner/AP But Lula's relationship with legal mining in the Amazon will likely be more complicated. Some operations are deeply rooted. The largest iron-ore mine in the world, for instance, has been located in the southern Amazon for half a century.Hundreds of companies have mining applications pending across the Brazilian Amazon."This mining might be legal, in that there is a supposed consultation process and such,” said Gisele Costa, a professor at Amazonas Federal University, who specializes on the impacts of mining in the region, "but the extraction of that ore will still pollute the rivers, kill people and so on.”Belo Sun is awaiting a pair of licenses for the mine to proceed. They hope they can get the green light this year. Indigenous and environmental activists have vowed to do everything in their means to ensure that that approval never comes.
