Join us in the latest episode of A to Z Golfing Podcast where we host a Swag Series event and enjoy the breathtaking views at Hammock Beach. Commendations to Danny Hughes and his amazing team at Hammock Beach Resort on the Ocean Course, who put up quite a venue. With top-notch lunch services, vendor support, and excellent coordination, the event ranks high on our list. We talk about Kevin Lewis, a long-time visitor at the place, who, fortunately, found some time to participate in our event with his partner TyCapps. This team played exceptionally well and won the gross division with a final score of minus four. And we can't forget the nail-biting playoff which left us at the edge of our seats. Three teams went head to head in an alternate shot which was won by last year's Swag Series National champions, Dustin and Spencer Dingus. All 3 teams were fantastic golfers and it was a pleasure to watch them play. We also had amazing interactions with some vendors, including Vienna Beef (Chicago-style hot dog), Titos Liquid Death, E-Z-Go and more. We also spent time with First Tee, which was an amazing experience. Followed by the games, we tried our hand at making a TikTok video and braved jellyfish for capturing a unique photo of the trophy on the beach! We conclude the event with adventures for the upcoming Mid-Pines meetup and tons of excitement. Catch all the fun moments and interesting anecdotes in this episode of the A to Z Golfing podcast. If listening wasn't enough you can also watch our podcast on the A to Z YouTube Channel . Harry Gilbert really does direct an orchestra, an orchestra of well-trained staff members, junior players and adult club members. He does it with aplomb and always with a smile on his face as he has waved his racquet and baton at clubs up and down the East Coast and on the islands for the past 40 years. Director of Tennis for the last 23 years at Waccabuc Country Club, located in the hills on the Westchester and Putnam county line in New York State, Harry has built an engaging and enormous program at a small, family club with just six Har-Tru courts. Stressing that staffing, budgeting, and communicating are all part of his role at Waccabuc as one of the leading directors in the country, he says he still does love his time on court. He's helped to create a family-centered program with fantastic results at Waccabuc. But, he's done that at each and every club he has ever served. Here are a few of his secrets. The Timeline of a Season Staffing by December 1, and certainly no later than the first week of January is crucial for a summer program. And in terms of programming and the calendar? That should be done by February 15th with notes from the staff exit interviews from the season before. "Ask your staff which events worked and which didn't," Gilbert adds. Sometimes they have a different view than you do! Harry's winter season in Florida, where Harry was Director at Hammock Beach Resort in Palm City for many years, and the islands are certainly different from New England. Preparation is key yet again. With his time during recent winters spent at the elite and exclusive Albany Resort, on Providence Island in the Bahamas, Harry discusses how the various demographics at resorts can make his work a bit more demanding than perhaps a year-round position. There are more peaks and valleys with time on court given the holiday season and spring break period through the winter. Gear up and get ready to lead a team aimed at full member satisfaction, says Gilbert. The Tennis Business Looking Back and Going Forward Harry recounts his time as USPTA President and the issues he faced at the national office. He believes the issues he faced during his tenure from 2007 to 2009 are really the same issues facing the USPTA today. And, although he realizes the accomplishments of both the USPTA and PTR, he bemoans the fact that there isn't just one industry body focused on the instructors and professionals. He applauds the work that both organizations have accomplished. The Secret to a Good Coach? There is an equation, according to Gilbert, which allows a good instructor to become a great pro. A good instructor needs to hone in on the one or two factors that are holding back the student the most. But, part of that equation, is to how much time will that coach have with the student. The shorter the time, the sooner the instructor must find these factors and the sooner those factors should be addressed. It's all here in this exclusive interview from our newest consultant to join our team, Harry Gilbert.

My good friend Brendon Elliott with Little Linksters Junior Golf invited my wife and I out to play Hammock Beach Resort today. The day was perfect and we learned a few very important things that I though worthy of sharing with you. Hammock Beach is an unbelievably great resort for golf and otherwise. The golf was perfect...challenging, fair, well conditioned, beautiful, and everything you want in an experience. 3 Adults in the group, with 3 young kids riding along worked out wonderfully. I highly encourage you to try it. Playing extreme forward tee markers is a great idea. My wife played from about 4,300 yards, shot about 80, and had a blast. She got to feel what it's like to strategize and course manage...rather than mindlessly pounding drivers and 3-woods on every non-par 3. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/golf-essentials/message

In this episode, we feature part two of our interview with the Radonic Family and discuss their move from trailer sailing to offshore cruising. We have some more unusual sailing news and our products of the week will provide comfortable seating on and off the boat. Our throttle cable broke, but we were able to remove the outboard cover and manually work the throttle to get us five miles to our destination and back. The Sailing Rode Leukemia Fundraising Brandy was diagnosed with leukemia in 2009. She is one of the lucky survivors as her cancer has been treated so far by a great drug therapy. That drug did not exist a few years before she was diagnosed and her prognosis would not have been as good before research created the drug therapy. In 2010, we created a crazy boating event called Lake Conway Wipeout that we eventually turned into a charity event. We ran the event for 5 years and raised over $30,000 for leukemia research. The event grew too large to manage safely so we ended it in 2014. Here are a couple videos on the event. Lake Conway Wipeout 2014 from ASofCFL on Vimeo. Interview In part two of our interview with the Radonics, they talk about their move from a trailer sailer to an offshore cruiser. The Radonics are based on Lake Ontario near Toronto Canada. After trailer sailing for several years, Ed decided he liked racing and also wanted to have a boat he could sail down to the Bahamas so they bought a Jeanneau 39i. The 39i is a comfortable cruiser but also a performance race boat. The have done multiple trips between the Toronto and the Bahamas and now leave the boat in the Bahamas year round. In this episode, we feature part one of our interview with the Radonic Family about their extensive trailer sailer cruising. We have some more unusual sailing news and our product of the week will help you battle bugs. Intro Chat We have been on shore the last few weekends, but had some fun meeting up with our local listeners and newly ASA101 certified sailors Colby and Stacey for Colbys birthday. We also celebrated Brandy's 20th High School Reunion. Our next trip is over the Labor Day weekend to the Hammock Beach Resort and Marina in Palm Coast, Florida. We are attending the Annapolis Sailboat Show October 6-9. Let us know if you are attending and we will find a time to meet everyone. We watched the Olympic Sailing races , congratulations to US Sailor, Caleb Paine, on winning a bronze medal in the Finn class. Steve exchanged emails with Olympic commentator, Gary Jobson about the RSX sailboard races. Gary even covered the question Steve asked in the live Olympic coverage! Steve heard from his high school friend, Rocque, in Chicago who just completed his second Chicago to Mackinac race. This year they had some rough weather. Twenty boats left the race with damage and one boat sank after losing its rudder post. See the picture below from Rocque's satellite weather, the yellow area on the right is Lake Michigan. You can see the storms coming from Wisconsin. Rocque said they got knocked down in 40 knots of wind, but they only sustained "cruiser damage" which happened when the microwave came lose and flew across the boat. They finished the race in fifth place in the cruising class. Rocque sails a 36ft. Island Packet Estero We released our video on our $200 boat air conditioning system. We got some great comments that highlighted some security issues we did not consider. Give it a watch and comment with any recommendations. Steve read this article on the UK program that started charging consumers seven cents for each plastic grocery bag which resulted in a 90% reduction in plastic bag consumption in one year! Steve decided to implement our own program at home to motivate us to stop using plastic bags so we started the "Bags to Boat Fund." We owe $1 for every plastic bag we use. The program has been a success and we have only used seven bags in the first month. The downside is that we only put $7 in the boat fund. We may change the program to add to the boat fund for each bag we avoid. Send us your ideas! The Sailing Rode Leukemia Fundraising Brandy was diagnosed with leukemia in 2009.
