Jay Karen, CEO of the National Golf Course Owners Association (NGCOA), joined Rob Thomas on the Club + Resort Talks podcast to discuss the organization's role in advocacy, education, and trade association services for golf course owners. He highlighted Google's entry into the tee time market, emphasizing the need for direct booking links to avoid third-party aggregators. Karen also addressed the impact of AI on golf operations, predicting widespread adoption of gamified driving ranges and simulators. He noted the rising golf prices due to inflation and the importance of municipal golf courses for affordability. Legal issues, such as liability for errant golf balls, were also discussed, with Karen emphasizing the need for connective tissue between green grass and off-course digital golf experiences. Also in the news, which was sponsored by KE Camps, Sarasota National in Venice, Fla., enlisted Fry/Straka Global Golf Course Design to enhance the course's playability for all skill levels and improve sustainability, while seamlessly tying-in the natural beauty of the Audubon International Certified Signature Sanctuary. Wayzata (Minn.) Country Club will close its golf course in summer 2025 to complete a comprehensive $15M renovation, with plans to reopen by June 2026. In addition to regrassing the entire course with 007 bent grass, updates feature new tee boxes, including forward tees on every hole, reshaped greens, and a modernized irrigation system. An 18-hole putting course will also be added as part of the enhancements. And … U.S. tennis participation has surged to a new high of 25.7 million players! Music is an essential part of our culture and live venues allow fans, who are the lifeblood of the music industry, to experience the music in a way that they cannot through recordings. This week, get ready to tee up some serious music talk as I'm excited to welcome back to the podcast, valued sponsor and Managing Partner of Golf Operations at Diamond Hawk Golf Course and Pub, Don Papaj. When we last connected, we were on location at 'The Hawk' witnessing the transformation of a clubhouse into a vibrant live music venue. It was a bold move, a risky play, but one that speaks volumes about the power of music. Don visited the Flamingo Lounge on December 6, 2024 where we talked music and took a deeper dive and explored the world of live music, venues, and community.

October 4, 2024 | Tom McGee - Director of Golf Operations at Grand Traverse Resort & Spa
Rob Thomas, Editor-in-Chief of Club + Resort Business and host of the Club + Resort Talks podcast, sat down with Gilles Gangon, Director of Sales at Casa de Campo in the Dominican Republic. A close personal friend of Pete Dye, Gilles was the longtime Director of Golf Operations at the acclaimed resort before taking on his new role. He has some VERY entertaining stories to share … as well as news on the upcoming renovation of Teeth of the Dog. Also in the news … After a two-and-a-half-year intensive course renovation, San Juan Oaks Golf Club in Hollister, Calif., has reopened for daily-fee play. Developer Third Millennium Partners has overseen the project from start to finish, with insights from golf architect Gene Bates—designer of the original course in 1996, along with PGA TOUR golfer and World Golf Hall of Fame member Fred Couples—who returned to modernize the layout in January 2022. The comprehensive restoration involved regrassing the entire course, including tees and fairways with perennial ryegrass, 007XL bentgrass on the greens and new drought-resistant Bermuda grass on the practice range. Installation of a new pump station and irrigation system reduces overwatering and achieves better playing conditions. A sinkhole at Bunker Hill Golf Course in Dubuque, Iowa, first appearing in May 2023, has raised concerns among local residents and golfers. The sinkhole, located near the 17th hole, measures 11 feet deep and exposes a limestone shelf, indicating a collapse into an underlying mineshaft. The golf course is situated above an old limestone mine, a common feature in the area, and sinkholes are not uncommon in the region due to the topography and historical mining activity. The City of Dubuque's Leisure Services Department, in collaboration with the engineering department, is actively working on a solution. Officials have confirmed that the depth of the sinkhole has remained stable, and the city is preparing to hire an outside company to repair it. The area has been fenced off and covered with plywood to ensure safety, and the city advises people to avoid the site. The Club at Olde Cypress in Naples, Fla. has enlisted Clive Daniel Hospitality for a renovation project. In partnership with Stock Development and Humphrey & Rosal Architects, Clive Daniel Hospitality is revitalizing the clubhouse to provide a refreshed, modernized experience for its members and guests. The renovation, which includes the expansion of both the bar and dining areas, will open the back of the dining space to panoramic views of the lake and golf course. The exterior will also see a transformation, with the addition of ample seating on the upper and lower terraces, and a newly constructed, covered exterior bar.
June 5, 2024 ~ On day 4 of the Pure Michigan Golf Tour, Josh Richter, Senior Vice President of Golf Operations at Boyne Resorts, stops by to chat with Kevin and Tom.
In Part 2 of Episode 30, I'm joined by two of the best Oil Creek Region athletes of all-time, Steve Shingledecker and Eric Johnson. Steve Shingledecker, who hails from Franklin, Pennsylvania, serves as the Head Coach of the Men's Golf Team at Robert Morris. Returning to coach RMU after successful tenures as Director of Golf Operations at the Turn Club in Cranberry Township and Director of Golf at Nemacolin Woodlands, Shingledecker did a great job leading the team this year. Their impressive performance includes a 3rd place finish at the Carpetbagger Classic in Frederick, Maryland, a feat coincidentally following Steve's last appearance on the show. I'm just sayin'. Steve is a great coach and PGA Professional and an even better guy. In our conversation, Steve sheds light on the Colonials' season progression and the departure of key graduating players. Additionally, we delve into strategies for rebounding from a challenging hole and the benefits of encouraging children to explore multiple sports rather than specializing early. Eric Johnson is a Golf Digest Top 100 Instructor. You can find him teaching each summer at Yellowstone Golf Club in Big Sky, Montana, one of the premier private courses in the country. Eric was the Director of Instruction at Oakmont for 17 years and then for a couple at Nemacolin. Eric was fresh off playing a round at Oakmont, with Pittsburgh Brewing Company Owner Cliff Forrest. We hear about the changes they've made at Oakmont in preparation for hosting the US Open in 2025. Eric also shares his thoughts on the PGA Championship, Tiger Woods' play, and the exceptional features of Yellowstone Country Club. Eric is one of my all-time favorites and when you listen to this segment you'll understand why.

Getting Better Now from the Golf Business Network with Dean Kandle, PGA
One thing we could probably all agree on is that traditionally the golf industry is pretty resistant to change. Look at the way we staff our golf operations with a Head Professional and X number of Assistants. That's been the model for as long as anybody can remember. Add to that the scope of the job for everyone on the staff from teaching some, running events, doing some merchandising, etc. It's been the same for a long time. As we know we're either in or approaching a crisis in the golf business. We need more Golf Professionals and while there are differing views on how we're going to find them, no one has their finger on the definitive answer. With that said, with challenges like these come innovation and now is the time to start thinking differently about how we structure the jobs at our facilities. At the forefront of this are two players in particular. The first, Club Corp, isn't really known for innovating in the employment department within our industry. The second, Retail Tribe, is dedicated to helping clubs and Golf Professionals grow their business. The marriage between the two has created a new role for the modern Golf Professional that is revolutionizing how we view the impact a Golf Professional can make on the bottom line. In a nutshell, as you will hear, Club Corp took traditional teaching professionals and Assistant Professionals and started incentivizing them to engage with members, develop programming, and generate excitement around the golf program. In turn, the Professional receives a cut of membership dues, program revenue, membership retention dollars, and spend on other items at the Club. Because they found that the more engaged a golfer is, the more the use the facility and the more they spend. And who better to engage golfers than a PGA Professional. It's something that when you say it out loud, you respond with “of course”. But only now has someone stepped up and rewarded the Professional for the true impact they're making. This model has been so successful, that Club Corp is rolling it out at every one of their facilities. That's right, all of them. Take the time to listen to this entire presentation that GBN hosted at the PGA Show this year. This model has the potential to revolutionize how Golf Professionals work and could save the industry in a time of crisis. Yes, it's that powerful. Here's GBN's presentation with Ian James, the CEO of Retail Tribe, Mark Gore, the Sr. Vice President of Golf Operations at Club Corp, and Matt Anzalone, the Regional Vice President of Player Development at Club Corp.
