I had a conversation I've been looking forward to for a long time — Simon Harling, author o'f Good Coach, Bad Coach', joins me to explore what it actually means to examine your own coaching practice with honesty, humility, and a willingness to sit with the uncomfortable stuff.Simon's journey started in sports science, moved through fitness coaching into professional football and strength and conditioning, and eventually arrived at a reckoning. He was brilliant with athletes who arrived with intent and clarity — people who just needed directing. But with everyone else? Not so much. That gap forced the question that became a book. What I love about this conversation is that Simon isn't here to tell you what good coaching looks like. He's here to hand you the lens and let you look for yourself.Three key takeaways: You can't coach people who don't feel stable and secure. Before we talk about instructional design, ecological dynamics or any model of practice, Simon argues we have to address whether a coach feels safe enough to make genuine choices. If they're compromised — financially, emotionally, environmentally — everything else is noise. The tension is the work. Whether it's performance versus development, money versus impact, or fear versus hope, the answer isn't to pick a side. It's to name the tension, sit with both poles, and design from there. That's Simon's definition of leadership — and it maps neatly onto ecological thinking. The student picks the teacher. The moment Simon genuinely became a learner wasn't when he got his master's or his accreditations — it was when he became open, curious, and willing. That shift changes everything about how you engage with development, and it applies to athletes and coaches alike. Simon's book is available in paperback, ebook, and audio, and you can connect with him at simonharling.blog. What does it actually take to build a great athlete? In this episode of the Champion Living Podcast, Doug sits down with JC Bird to talk about athlete development, coaching philosophy, and why playing the long game matters more than chasing hype. JC shares his perspective on raising the standard in coaching and athletics, from building grit and work ethic to developing athletes the right way instead of rushing the process. They dive into what separates long-term success from short-term flashes and why doing things differently is sometimes exactly what the sport needs. This conversation isn't about shortcuts. It's about foundation, discipline, and creating athletes who can sustain success at the highest level. If you care about the future of athletes, rodeo and developing the next generation the right way, this episode is for you.
Welcome to Steelers Morning Rush, our new daily short-form podcast with Alan Saunders, giving a longer perspective on a single news topic surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers or the National Football League. Today, it's the hiring of Mike McCarthy as the team's next head coach, a process that has been roundly panned both nationally and in Pittsburgh. While the hiring of McCarthy feels rushed, and the product of a poor process, that doesn't necessarily mean he's going to be awful as the team's head coach. Alan breaks it down. In the first hour, DVD discusses Cam Ward standing up for his Head Coach Brian Callahan and the importance of coaching stability. They also played Devil's Advocate and said what if Brian Callahan is simply not a good coach?
You know that feeling when you found coaching? That sense that you've finally discovered your "thing". The work that lights you up so much, it doesn't even feel like work. You know you're a good coach; your trainers and clients have told you so. But here's the hard truth: being a good coach isn't enough to build a coaching business. If you want to earn the fees you dreamed of at your coach training, you need to be able to find your own clients. In this episode, Sarah gets real about why great coaching skills alone won't pay the bills and dives into the minefield of marketing. What You'll Discover in This Episode:The Expert Trap: Just as a Master Credentialed Coach (MCC) has over 2,500 hours of coaching experience, Sarah is a "Master Credentialed Marketer" with thousands of hours specialising in marketing for qualified coaches. She understands why you don't know whom to trust. Dodging the "Sleaze": We've all seen them—the slimy promises of "warm leads straight into our diaries" or "six figures in 90 days" that slide into our DMs. At The Coaching Revolution, the approach is different: straightforward, pragmatic, and honed for coaches, with no sleaze or uninvited DMs. Marketing Can Actually Be... Enjoyable? The process taught is designed to be comfortable, effective, ethical, and authentic. While new things are uncomfortable at first, the goal is to make marketing an enjoyable and creative habit. The Two Big Roadblocks (and How to Overcome Them): In a recent poll, coaches said the biggest things stopping them from learning to market were cost (48%) and not knowing who to trust (41%). Is it too expensive? With options now starting from a £99 monthly membership, there are programs to suit all budgets. You may only need to sell four coaching packages to recoup the entire cost of the program. Who can you trust? The Coaching Revolution is the only provider where all mentors are coaches who have been through the program and are actively and successfully marketing their own businesses right now. The testimonials on the website are all from real people who have been through the process. Have you enjoyed this episode? They show up the same way every time. And by that, I mean, they're not volatile. Like, you know what you're going to get.06:16 - They're going to look to you as an example. And so, you need to be leading by example, which means a good coach needs to always be growing themselves and leading by example. So sharpening your skills, how you're showing up, what are you reading, what podcasts are you listening to, but always learning and growing yourself in that space.13:17 - Think about these characteristics on both sides, reflect on your recent interactions with your advisors and ask yourself if you're coaching in a way that sometime in the future, when that advisor is asked about a coach who had a tremendous positive influence on them, they name you.ContactHeather Price Consulting

So does that mean that every coach from the 1990s and prior was a bad coach? Is good coaching actually determined by the methods you use, or something else? Can you be a bad coach while also being up to date with science?
