Tiger was returning to the Masters, the PGA Championship had been moved to Gil Hanse-restored Southern Hills, the U.S. Open was visiting the Country Club for the first time since 1988, and St. Andrews was hosting the 150th edition of the Open. To the delight of golf fans everywhere, the tournaments lived up to the hype.   Welcome once again to a VERY special edition of The Flaghunters Golf Podcast. Today, we have my friend and World number Four on the Pod, Lydia Ko.    Lydia was born in  South Korea and moved to New Zealand when she was four.  At 15 years of age she became the youngest to ever win a LPGA event and the only person to win 2 LPGA events as an Amateur.  Lydia also became the youngest Major Championship winner at 18 years of age when she won the Evian Championship in 2015. Her closing round of 63 became the 2nd lowest to win a Major in Woman's Golf history. She bested that number with a 62 in the ANA Inspiration in 2021.        While Lydia had so much success early, she did struggle a bit after her meteoric rise. Lydia went though some tough times with her game but bounced back with the help of her Coach, Sean Foley , to come back into the form that she's used to playing at. Something that I highly recommend that you read is her letter to her public letter she wrote to her 15 year old self. You can find the link directly on her Instagram page.  The letter gives a deep, compassionate look into who Lydia really is, a genuine Woman with the wisdom of someone much older than her age of 26.    Although I am 52 years of age, I look up to Lydia. She's a very humble, grounded superstar that has her life and her game in a very healthy perspective. This is something that we should all strive for.   A big hug to Lydia and a sincere thanks for spending some time to enlighten all of us.  I have no doubt that Lyds will continue to be in Championship form for years to come .

Major Championship winner, Martha Nause, takes us back to growing up in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, learning the game with her four siblings under the watchful eyes of her parents at their local country club. With no high school or college golf team (until her senior year), Martha's game developed as a family summer endeavor, learning how to compete and win (or lose) with grace from her mother. With the great Manuel de la Torre as her coach, she quickly turned her summertime passion into her life's work, turning professional at age 23 and qualifying in her first attempt for the LPGA Tour. Success came slowly, first by making a few cuts and small checks. Ten years of hard work and developing her self-confidence, Martha finally broke through for win #1 at the Planters Pat Bradley International. In the afterglow of winning, she still had some challenges and triumphs ahead. Martha Nause begins her life story, "FORE the Good of the game."

In 1941, the USGA cancelled the U.S. Open because of World War II. But the strange thing about the cancellation is the fact that the USGA still staged a tournament, the Hale America National Open. Now, while it was moved from Interlachen in Minnesota to the new Ridgemoor Country Club just outside of Chicago, there were very few differences between the Hale America and a U.S. Open. Ridgemoor was an easier course. The U.S. Open Championship trophy was not awarded. But consider this: there was qualifying, just like today; guys like Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson, Jimmy Demaret, Lloyd Mangrum and Bobby Jones all entered, a medal very similar to the one handed to winner of the U.S. Open was handed to the winner of the Hale America, and the list goes on. So, why did/does the USGA not consider the Hale America National Open a U.S. Open? Peter May, author of the book, "The Open Question" is here to explore that question. We discuss the many similarities. If the Hale America was considered to be a U.S. Open, amazingly, it would have been the first Major Championship won by Ben Hogan and, in total, Hogan would have won the U.S. Open five times! As it is, only Hogan, Willie Anderson, Bobby Jones and Jack Nicklaus won the U.S. Open four times. Should Hogan be credited with a fifth? Well, of course he thought so. Listen to today's podcast about this forgotten tournament, one of which the USGA has basically stricken from the record books, and decide for yourself.

2023 will mark Lee Westwood's 30th year as a professional and while the game's Grand Slam titles have eluded him, he has achieved every other measurable milestone in the game. At Whistling Straits last year, he matched Sir Nick Faldo's record for most Ryder Cup appearances with 11 and was one of only three players to win his singles match in an otherwise heavy defeat. Westwood has played — and won — all over the world and including the 1997 Australian Open in a play-off over Greg Norman, and been one of the game's best international ambassadors. In this candid and length chat with John Huggan, the Englishman talks about all that as well as perhaps his most controversial career decision to date: playing in the much-maligned Saudi Golf League.
