In this week's [UNCENSORED] podcast by GoWild, we talk with Paul Campbell from the 02 Podcast about every and anything turkey hunting related. He spent the majority of his season on the road chasing the thunder with some of his most memorable moments in the Everglades of southern Florida–it was HOT! Pro-tip: Don't forget your Thermacell! He packed on the miles in pursuit of a Sunshine State public land Osceola, even after finding an unpromising sight at his camp site. He then transferred over to some private land for a completely different style of hunting hoping for success … find out if he finds it or not! Lots of firsts for Paul on his trip as well as plenty of excitement. Listen in to find out why he says he'd love to go back. We also cover public hunting perception and how the atmosphere is changing. How do we get more people outdoors and hunting? Paul gives some great advice on how he thinks we can change the perception of anti-hunting and how we should showcase hunting vs how it currently gets displayed on social media. What do you think outdoorsmen can do to help promote the hunting industry in a positive light? Paul goes on to talk about getting to speak to a conservation science class in Ohio. We talk about just how important it is to bring that curriculum into both high school and grad school levels of education as the numbers of hunters declines. Bass fishing teams and national archery leagues are really making a positive impact in that space but how else could we get kids involved? We pivot to discuss just how stupid a whitetail can be during turkey season. Literally they'll walk right up to your lap! Also, Paul tells a story about how he comes to a whitetail's rescue; the second time's the charm, right? Lots of fishing gear is dropping on the GoWild platform soon, as well as some collaborative stuff with gunbroker.com. It's going to be an exciting summer! If you like what you're hearing, please leave us a rate and review!! [UNCENSORED] by GoWild kicks off your week with shameful nonsense, inappropriate convictions, and unfiltered tales from the woods, waters and whatevers. [UNCENSORED] is a behind the scenes look at our adventures, failures, wins, embarrassing moments at trade shows, hilarious tales from the warehouse, and a good rant or three about the most recent tyranny from the Dark Lord of the Sith himself. Do you ever go grocery shopping without any sort of list and end up forgetting half of what you actually needed? Not fun, right? So why would you take that same approach with how you operate your supply chain? On our season finale of Supply Chain Therapy, listen to how Rebeca Illsley, COO of Thermacell Repellents, successfully incorporates process into an ever-growing demand pipeline. Yet another veteran in the industry, Rebecca held a variety of roles at The Clorox Company, including Director of Manufacturing & Director of Supply Chain Integration, before making the leap to Thermacell. In the conversation with Alex and Michelle, Rebecca shares what big lessons she's brought to the Thermacell team, and what she's prioritized first since joining the organization. Some of the highlights include segmentation, team building, and focusing on S&OP first and foremost. Given that Thermacell products are EPA registered, Rebecca highlights the ways in which your manufacturing is impacted when producing safe, high-quality products. Later on, you'll also hear Rebecca talk about what it was like to partially step away from her career in order to build her family and raise her two daughters. Hint – It's totally possible! In addition, she gives her take on how her experience has been in this male-dominated industry, and what advice she has for others looking to tighten the gender gap. —Guest BioRebecca Illsley is the Chief Operating Officer of Thermacell Repellents Inc. She started her career in consumer packaged goods 24 years ago in Research and Development with Frito-Lay followed by Coca-Cola. Rebecca took a pause in her career for six years opting to stay at home with her two daughters. She returned to work full time at The Clorox Company where she held a variety of roles in supply chain over 14 years. Those roles included Manager of Contract Manufacturing, Director of Global Quality Assurance, Director of Supply Chain Integration and Director of Manufacturing. Rebecca is very proud to be leading a talented supply chain organization at Thermacell, driving growth by disrupting the mosquito repellent category with exciting product innovation.Rebecca grew up in Nova Scotia Canada and has a BSc in Food Science from Acadia University and a MS in Food Science from the University of Minnesota. —Guest Quote“My opinion is: S&OP is the brain of the supply chain. So if you don't have S&OP where it needs to be, then you really can't manage your demand. Maggie Heumann is many things -- Artemis founder, podcast host, outdoor gear hocker, fisherwoman -- AND... entomologist. This week we're talking bugs in the field. From finding a treasure trove of bug artifacts at an estate sale to inadvertently having a sleeping bag full of fleas, there's a lot to know about our six-legged frenemies. 1:25 - 'Bugz with Magz' webinars 3:30 - Maggie's quarantine: Knitting, bread-baking, watching bug videos. Yep. 5:25 - Maggie's Instagram... sweet entomology finds from an estate sale. 8:30 - Big snow year = big skeeter year... womp womp. But on the flip side, drier years often mean more ticks/fleas 9:30 - Mosquitos are attracted to the output of CO2 (= breathing) and lactic acid. They're remarkable at sensing people from afar 12:00 - Skin-liquifying bug enzymes 13:00 - Colors. Mosquitoes love them! 14:30 - Black flies, horseflies, deer flies 19:00 - Anytime it's above 50 degrees, it's mosquito-hatching time 20:30 - Caterpillars... A good rule of thumb: If it has really vibrant colors or spines, probably not a good one to handle. 21:30 - Ants... geography makes a big difference. Fire ants in the Southeast are worth steering clear of. 22:30 – E.O. Wilson discovered imported red fire ants as a youngster... and he went on to be a big bug guy ever since. 23:00 - With ants, wasps, bees, hornets -- the biggest concern is allergies. Keep antihistamines and antiseptics in your first-aid kit. If you're not allergic, try not to itch! It further distributes the insect's poison on your skin. 24:50 - Dip spit may, or may not, alleviate the pain of a sting. 25:00 - Bees/wasps/hornets -- they're bugs with four wings. The two-winged bugs are the flies. 25:30 - Fleas! Fleas don't just live on your dog and cat... they love to live in your house. No wings, but those buggers can jump. 26:30 - White is a bug-neutral color for the most part... except when it comes to fleas. Don't wear white socks. Get colorful socks! 28:00 - A cautionary tale of tossing white ankle socks on a sleeping bag in flea country 31:30 - Moving on to ticks... not actually insects! As larvae they have six legs, but when they molt they become 8-legged. (Chiggers and mites: also arachnids.) 33:30 - It's worth dumping some time on YouTube to see how ticks find their hosts. Check this one out. 35:00 - The signature 'bullseye' of Lyme disease is only specific to one tick... you can still get it without experiencing that. 37:00 - Lyme disease is still concentrated in the East/Northeast. Out West though, there's Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever in the way of tick-borne illness 38:00 - Scorpions... most of the time they're harmless. Painful bite, nothing more. 39:00 - Handling tick- or flea-laden game 41:00 - Send us your pictures of bugs on game! Artemis@nwf.org 41:30 - Black widows, brown recluses, hobo spiders -- those are the big arachnids to know 43:00 - Chiggers don't actually burrow into you 45:00 - Deet... really bad for your outdoor gear, really great for keeping bugs away. But maybe not for everyone. 45:30 - Alternative bug sprays: IR3535 - a new insect repellent from Europe, Picariden, and essential oils (lemon, citrus, catnip oils), or Thermacell fan

My guest for The Happy Hour # 199 is Liz Curtis Higgs. Liz is an author, speaker, and has three abiding passions: encouraging her sisters in Christ, exploring the stories of women in the Bible, and writing novels set in Scotland of old. Liz has written 37 books and travels around the world speaking and encouraging women. Liz is mom to Matthew and Lillian (recent college grads!) and when she's not traveling she loves being home with her husband Bill and her twin tabby cats Boaz and Samson. Friends, I am so excited to share today's episode with you and I know you are going to love hearing from Liz about her story, how she came to write about the "Bad Girls" in the Bible, and her current fight with cancer. No matter what the circumstance, Liz brings hope and encouragement for us all. Liz starts off the show sharing how she came to know Jesus and how He saved her from a life she knew was leading her towards a dead end. She tells us how a couple who had newly come to know Jesus "loved her into the Kingdom" by simply sharing what they had so recently learned. I love that so much because it affirms that we can't know it all, but that doesn't mean God can't use us in ways that impact others. We also talk about shame and how it can stop us from telling our stories or truly experiencing freedom. Liz tells us how she never intended to write "Bad Girls of the Bible" and how God led her down a path that opened more doors than she ever could have imagined. In the last half of the episode, Liz talks about her current fight with cancer - her "annoyance" she calls it. She candidly talks about what it's like to face less than promising news and how even amidst this suffering she sees God's faithfulness each day. She says "no matter what tomorrow brings, God will not be shaken." {You can listen to the show HERE. And of course, I would love if you would share with your friends. My guest for The Happy Hour # 198 is Michelle McKinney. Michelle defines herself as a Dream Architect and she brings her 20-years experience working alongside senior executives at companies such as Starbucks, American Express, Fannie Mae and Zion, to help women design, construct and bring their God-given dreams to life. Michelle and her husband, Tony, reside in Maryland with their 4 children - Caleb, Mekhi, Anthony and Selah. I knew Michelle and I would get along when I saw her dance onto the stage at Shine, and she brings her joy and energy to the show today - I know you're going to love it. Michelle believes that every woman can fulfill her God-given purpose, and on today's show we talk about how women can discover those dreams and move through the restlessness, yearning, and transition of when God is transplanting us to something new. We discuss the struggle of finding contentment in a season instead of only focusing on what's next. I love her idea of keeping a journal to write down your wins each day - it's such a great way to celebrate and look back and see how God has been working in your life. In the second half of the show we discuss one of my favorite topics - marriage. Michelle speaks about marrying for love and purpose. She says, "marriage is about partnership and being able to build something to advance God’s kingdom even more than what you could do alone." Lastly, Michelle tells us about what is now my new favorite idea for a party - a bridal shower reboot for her 20th wedding anniversary! {You can listen to the show HERE. My guest for The Happy Hour # 196 is Rachel Henry. Rachel is wife to her high school sweetheart, Simon, and they have six beautiful children whom she's home-schooled for the last two years. Rachel and her family reside in Florida where they like to live like they're on vacation every day! Friends, I'm going to get straight to it - today's show is difficult to listen to. It's difficult, but incredibly powerful and full of hope and healing amidst tragedy. A few warnings: in the episode today Rachel talks about the night that her home was broken into and she was raped. I encourage younger ears to have an adult listen first. Also, if you struggle with fear around these topics, have a trusted friend listen first and guide you on if you should listen and/or any parts you should skip. What Rachel has experienced is absolutely horrific. As you listen to her share her story, you will also hear loud and clear the hope she carries, and how God has been with her and her family through their journey. I was floored listening to her describe the trial and how she faced her attackers and told them she forgave them, and how she's prayed for them. In the last part of the show, Rachel talks about her journey of healing and how crucial it was to find the right therapy. Rachel describes the effectiveness of EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) with traumatic experiences and how it could help others. I am incredibly grateful to Rachel for her vulnerability and sharing her story so that others would be encouraged and have hope. {You can listen to the show HERE. More paper pasted this week in the Adnan Syed case. The defense has filed its conditional cross-petition. It basically says, "Hey state supreme court, don't take this case. But if you do, we got some stuff over here we want to talk about." This week's "In the Dark" buries the needle on the Brickter-scale. Listen how Cookie's story crumbles. The crime writers break out the leotards and sweatbands for the hot hot-yoga docu-pod "30 for 30: Bikram." Julia Lowrey Henderson tells the rise of Bikrim Choudhury, peels back the veneer of his self-created myth, and gets into the many allegations of sexual misconduct. There are TWO true crime updates this week in the Adnan Syed case. First, prosecutors have decided to ask Maryland's highest court to review the previous rulings granting Adnan a new trial. Second, HBO has announced a documentary about the case is in the works. They promise new information and the first interviews with Adnan since "Serial." We discuss episode four of "In the Dark." Something's fishy about those jailhouse confessions, and Lara's head might explode. Speaking of confessions, Kevin admits he's always wanted to try the tangy taste of Miracle Whip. With three naysayers listening on, he takes his first bites. Moving on...the crime writers go over the Netflix documentary "Evil Genius." A man robs a bank with a bomb locked around his neck. Thermacell is a company that is at war with one of the deadliest animals on the planet, the Mosquito! The Mosquito accounts for 1 million deaths a year according to the World Health Orginization. Now Thermacell is not trying to make the Mosquito extinct, they have narrowed their research into how to keep the Mosquito's away from you. I got to chat with Adam Chojnaski who is the VP of Product and Innovation at Thermacell. Adam goes into detail about how the company continues to think outside of the box to keep people safe.
In this episode, we feature part one of our interview with the Radonic Family about their extensive trailer sailer cruising. We have some more unusual sailing news and our product of the week will help you battle bugs. Intro Chat We have been on shore the last few weekends, but had some fun meeting up with our local listeners and newly ASA101 certified sailors Colby and Stacey for Colbys birthday. We also celebrated Brandy's 20th High School Reunion. Our next trip is over the Labor Day weekend to the Hammock Beach Resort and Marina in Palm Coast, Florida. We are attending the Annapolis Sailboat Show October 6-9. Let us know if you are attending and we will find a time to meet everyone. We watched the Olympic Sailing races , congratulations to US Sailor, Caleb Paine, on winning a bronze medal in the Finn class. Steve exchanged emails with Olympic commentator, Gary Jobson about the RSX sailboard races. Gary even covered the question Steve asked in the live Olympic coverage! Steve heard from his high school friend, Rocque, in Chicago who just completed his second Chicago to Mackinac race. This year they had some rough weather. Twenty boats left the race with damage and one boat sank after losing its rudder post. See the picture below from Rocque's satellite weather, the yellow area on the right is Lake Michigan. You can see the storms coming from Wisconsin. Rocque said they got knocked down in 40 knots of wind, but they only sustained "cruiser damage" which happened when the microwave came lose and flew across the boat. They finished the race in fifth place in the cruising class. Rocque sails a 36ft. Island Packet Estero We released our video on our $200 boat air conditioning system. We got some great comments that highlighted some security issues we did not consider. Give it a watch and comment with any recommendations. Steve read this article on the UK program that started charging consumers seven cents for each plastic grocery bag which resulted in a 90% reduction in plastic bag consumption in one year! Steve decided to implement our own program at home to motivate us to stop using plastic bags so we started the "Bags to Boat Fund." We owe $1 for every plastic bag we use. The program has been a success and we have only used seven bags in the first month. The downside is that we only put $7 in the boat fund. We may change the program to add to the boat fund for each bag we avoid. Send us your ideas! The Sailing Rode Leukemia Fundraising Brandy was diagnosed with leukemia in 2009. She is one of the lucky survivors as her cancer has been treated so far by a great drug therapy. That drug did not exist a few years before she was diagnosed and her prognosis would not have been as good before research created the drug therapy. In 2010, we created a crazy boating event called Lake Conway Wipeout that we eventually turned into a charity event. We ran the event for 5 years and raised over $30,000 for leukemia research. The event grew too large to manage safely so we ended it in 2014. Here are a couple videos on the event. Wipeout 1 & Wipeout 2 We are asking for your help to support the annual fundraising for Leukemia and Lymphoma research. It only takes a couple minutes and a few dollars make a big difference. Click Here to Donate to The Sailing Rode Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Team You can also join our team and do your own local fundraising and participate in the LLS Light the Night Walk in October. All the details are on the site. Also please consider registering to be a potential bone marrow donor at BeTheMatch.org The second most common Leukemia is called AML and those diagnosed are not as lucky as Brandy. AML patients currently has only a 25% chance of living five years from diagnosis. Many die before they find a bone marrow donor. You could easily save a life, please register to be a donor today. In this episode of The Turkey Hunter, I interview representatives from 5 different companies at the 2016 ATA Trade Show in Louisville, KY. Chris Currah with Lacrosse and Danner boots is up first to tell us about their new snakeproof boots for this year. Next are James Moelk and Rick Leasure with High Point Products to tell us about their line of gun/bow rests and camera holders. After that, I interview Adam Goess with ThermaCell to tell us about what they have that is new for 2016. Josh Silvia with ThermaCell Heated Products is after that. Josh talks about their line of rechargeable heated boot insoles and heat packs. I found a really cool product made by TORQ, and I tricked Rick D'Andrea into doing an interview with me to tell me about their all electric dune buggy. Lastly, Keith Beam with Drake's Adventures is with us to talk about his line of children's hunting sound books. These are really neat books that I think you'll want to get for your children or grandchildren.
