At Caesar's funeral, the angry crowd demands answers. Brutus speaks first, saying that he loved Rome more than Caesar. Asking the crowd if they would rather be free with Caesar dead or slaves with Caesar alive, the crowd sides with Brutus. But when Antony enters with Caesar's body, things begin to change. He reminds the crowd of Caesar's good qualities and shows them the wounds on Caesar's body where each knife pierced his skin. Then he reads Caesar's will, revealing that Caesar has bequeathed to every citizen his dream of equality. Antony doesn't just win the crowd over to his side, he whips them into an angry mob intent on revenge. As the crowd rages, Antony's guard tells him that Octavius and Lepidus have arrived in Rome and that the conspirators have fled the city. Out in the streets, the mob confronts Cinna the Poet, who they mistake for Cinna the conspirator. She tries to reason with them but they rip her to pieces with their bare hands. Later, Antony meets Octavius and Lepidus to form the new triumvirate of Rome. Together, they choose which conspirators are to die. Once alone with Octavius, Antony questions Lepidus's integrity. Octavius defends him but Antony persists in his critique before turning their attention to preparations for the ensuing Civil War against Cassius and Brutus. Learn more about your ad choices. Pay close attention to the presidential conventions as it becomes immediately evident that Americans have allowed themselves to be brainwashed into worshipping a political idol manufactured by the Deep State. In a carefully choreographed scheme to strip the American citizenry of our power and our rights, “we the people” have become victims of the Deep State's confidence game. Terrorist attacks, pandemics, economic uncertainty, national security threats, and civil unrest are all simulated crises that add to the sense of urgency and help us feel invested in the outcome of various elections. From the attempted assassinations of candidates, we go to open murders of voters, violent riots at conventions, and violence against Supreme Court justices, political commentators, and dissenters. Tonight on Ground Zero (7-10 pm, pacific time) Clyde Lewis talks about FRIENDS REPUBLICANS COUNTRYMEN – LEND ME A BLOODY EAR. “Utopian ideologies invite genocide for two reasons. One is that they set up a pernicious utilitarian calculus. In a utopia, everyone is happy forever, so its moral value is infinite. Most of us agree that it is ethically permissible to divert a runaway trolley that threatens to kill five people onto a side track where it would kill only one. But suppose it were a hundred million lives one could save by diverting the trolley, or a billion, or—projecting into the indefinite future—infinitely many. How many people would it be permissible to sacrifice to attain that infinite good?"  -Stephen Pinker   According to my rough calculation, 50 million people were killed by their non-government countrymen in the 20'th century.  According to RJ Rummel, about 250 unarmed people were intentionally killed by governments over the same span.  5:1   "The failure of technological determinism as a theory of the history of violence should not be that surprising. Human behavior is goal-directed, not stimulus-driven, and what matters most to the incidence of violence is whether one person wants another one dead."  -Stephen Pinker

Behold – the late, great Edward Lionheart, a Shakespearean actor whose performances in Julius Caesar, Troilus and Cressida, Othello, Cymbeline, and others left him the laughingstock of London theatre critics, is dead.  And yet somehow, someone is knocking off said critics one at a time in truly Shakespearean fashion… albeit with slight alterations to the text.  Shylock may have wanted his pound his flesh – this killer takes the heart.  Joan of Arc might have burned at the stake – this killer fries his victims in a hair salon.  Peregrine Devlin, head of the London Critics Circle, is baffled, as are the police.  And yet – the order of the killings bear a striking resemblance to Lionheart's last repertory season.  What's going on with the Thames-side meths drinkers that have taken up residence in the crumbling Burbage Theatre?  And what might Edward's daughter, Edwina, have to do with everything?  Friends, Romans, Countrymen, lend us your ears – for herein lies the tale of the deceased actor who set out to exact revenge, and succeeded, and the rest – is silence. The Tudor period remains a source of timeless fascination, with endless novels, TV programmes and films depicting the period in myriad ways. And yet our image of the Tudor era remains overwhelmingly white. This ground-breaking and provocative new book seeks to redress the balance: revealing not only how black presence in Tudor England was far greater than has previously been recognised, but that Tudor conceptions of race were far more complex than we have been led to believe. Onyeka Nubia's original research shows that Tudors from many walks of life regularly interacted with people of African descent, both at home and abroad, revealing a genuine pragmatism towards race and acceptance of difference. Nubia also rejects the influence of the 'Curse of Ham' myth on Tudor thinking, persuasively arguing that many of the ideas associated with modern racism are in fact relatively recent developments. England's Other Countrymen: Black Tudor Society (Bloomsbury, 2019) is a bravura and eloquent forgotten history of diversity and cultural exchange, and casts a new light on our own attitudes towards race. Now that season two of Yellowjackets has been over for a week, and Andrea and Jodie have had some time to digest it, we're back to unpack all the nitty-gritty details of season 2. We return to that controversial Nat scene–what we still don't love about it, what's started to make some sense with a little more time to think about it, and what it might mean for season 3. We trace our main characters' arcs from "Friends, Romans, Countrymen" to "Storytelling." We also talk about the tricky work of portraying mental illness ethically and responsibility on screen. And of course we dig into all the fun stuff: needle drops, class superlatives, and, of course, the Jersey of it all. We've gotten so many great suggestions from our listeners for what we should cover in the off-season. We're going to take a couple of weeks to comb through them and see what we think will be the most fun for us to watch and chat about. As soon as we decide, we'll drop a quick little episode in the feed to let you know what's coming up. And obviously no matter what we decide, whenever we get that good bonus Cabin Daddy content (Jodie didn't gloat TOO hard in this episode), our very next episode will be covering that.Jodie's recommended reading: "The Giant Wistaria" by Charlotte Perkins GilmanThank you all so much for joining us for this first official season of The Watchers podcast. It has been such a joy to watch these wonderfully complicated, cannibalistic Jersey girls with youse. See you in a couple weeks! If you're reading this, that means you've probably got your podcatcher of choice open right now. It would be SO helpful if you gave our little new show a follow. Yellowjackets is back which means recaps have debuted! Chels (@Chels725) is joined by Community, Mythic Quest, and Drag Race rewatch recurring favorite Spooky Queen Sharai (@MissSharai) to recap this season's mystery. Our favorite bifurcated timeline is back, and both young and adult versions of our characters are struggling. Young Shauna is still pregnant and cracking after Jackie's death, while Adult Shauna continues to cleanup her affair and murder. Both Adult and Teen Tai continues to hallucinate and break from reality, while Nat deals with Lottie's cult in two timelines. Only our resident citizen detective Misty has her wits about her and discovers people are on their cases. Plus, we get our first inkling of cannibalism and wonder: Are we closer to discovering the identity of the Antler Queen? Yellowjackets is back in a big way, and Jodie and Andrea are breaking down all the gory details of the season 2 premiere, "Friends, Romans, Countrymen." We follow Shauna and Jeff as they try to cover their tracks. We meet Tai's new little buddy (uh-oh). Misty puts her Citizen Detective skills to the test, and we learn more about where Nat got carried off to last season. Can you tell we're trying to keep these notes spoiler free? This episode definitely isn't, so make sure you're caught up before you listen! We also celebrate the expert use of Tori Amos, speculate about alliterative New Jersey serial killers, and reminisce over the chokehold The Craft had on teenage girls in the 90s.NOTE: The first hour or so of this episode is a regular recap/review. Then we get DEEP into a very specific, very detailed, very convincing theory Jodie is currently obsessed with. We'll let you know before we dive in, so you'll know when move on to Smartless or wherever you're headed to from here.If you're reading this, that means you've probably got your podcatcher of choice open right now.
