The situation in Haiti, especially in and around the capital Port-au-Prince, has deteriorated in recent months. In some areas gang violence and poverty is rampant, while food, water and fuel have become scarce. While many point to the assassination of former-president Jovenel Moïse as the catalyst for the current crisis, our guest today argues that the roots of the current tumult stretch back much further, and that past Canadian foreign policy decisions have contributed heavily.Now, there are calls for foreign military intervention to stabilize the situation, and suggestions that Canada should play a leading role in that effort, many are concerned that we've learned nothing from our past mistakes.So what exactly is happening in Haiti? What do the Haitian people need to improve their situation? On Saturday, August 14, a 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck southwest Haiti, directly impacting the area of more than 17,000 Compassion-assisted children. Houses, roads, businesses, churches and government buildings have been damaged, including 46 Compassion child development centers. The death toll has risen to over 2,100 people, who are desperately in need of clean water, medical help and shelter. Just about 2,000 people were killed and 9,900 injured in Haiti on August 14, 2021, after a 7.2 magnitude earthquake ripped apart the impoverished nation. More than 38,000 homes were totally destroyed with almost 48,000 homes damaged or collapsed. Unfortunately, those numbers continue to rise with each passing day. Dig into this teaching and discover how by abiding in Jesus, God (1) teaches us to desire what he desires in prayer, (2) enables us to live fruitful lives that glorify Him, (3) assures us of His love, (4) and fills us with His joy. James 1:22 encouragement- In His illustration, Jesus compares us abiding in Him to a branch of a grapevine remaining attached to the vine. The purpose? For the branch to receive life from the vine in order to bear fruit. Pray and ask God to show you areas of your life where you see God producing the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23) and using you in ways that bring glory to Jesus. As God shows you what He sees, give Him thanks and ask Him to prune those fruitful areas of anything that would inhibit God from producing more fruit. Are there areas that currently don't appear to be fruitful? Ask God to reveal what His will is for that area of your life. It may be to remove sources of temptation and sin, and replace them with godly things or pursuits. It may something that in and of itself isn't sinful, but is slowing down your growth in Christ. Ask God for wisdom in how this may be enjoyed or done in a way that glorifies Him, while not distracting you from God or inhibiting your pursuit of Him. Ever thought of going to Haiti just for fun? Just to enjoy it's beauty, culture and food? With all the press focusing on disasters and poverty in Haiti, this might seem outlandish. Paul Clammer doesn't think so, though. He is the author of the 2013 Brandt Travel Guide to Haiti, the first tourist guide to Haiti to come out in decades. Clammer is suggesting that people reconsider how they think about Haiti and consider new narratives in which Haiti is a source of fun, education, and wonder.
Since the January 2010 earthquake, Hollywood celebrities, like so many Americans, have given their money and loaned their faces and voices to Haiti. But are they helping the country? In conjunction with the Fowler Museum at UCLA exhibition “In Extremis: Death and Life in 21st-Century Haiti,” this question was posed by journalist Amy Wilentz to a panel of people who have worked in Haiti and philanthropy: Generosity Water CEO Jordan Wagner, UCSB black studies scholar Claudine Michel, and Giving Back Fund president Marc Pollick.
