Episode Notes My guests include the Honorable Mayor Jaylen Smith of Earle, Arkansas. He was elected in 2022 at the age of 18 making him the youngest elected official in the country. I ask him how he's grown along with the city and if he has any future political aspirations. Next, if you are of a certain age and were born and raised in the south you were familiar with Jim Crow laws that enforced racial segregation. Raka Nandi, Director of Exhibits & Collections at MoSH joins me to talk about their newest exhibit, Overcoming Hateful Things and why it's important to remember history and teach it to the next generation. Finally, last week, the city of Memphis held a special ceremony to salute and honor the work of area nonprofits with $6.5 million dollars in grant awards. One of those organizations is Hope House Memphis who received $1.3 million dollars. Their mission is to improve the quality of life for individuals and families affected by HIV and poverty. Melissa Farrar, COO, joins me to share what this will mean as they continue to build on their efforts in a greater way. That and more on air and online Monday, 6 pm on 91.7 WYXR. "I came to Detroit and realized—this ain't a city you read about. This is a city you live." In this Detroit is Different episode, Joshua LaMere unpacks a cultural journey that spans from North Minneapolis to the heart of Highland Park, and what it means to truly fall in love with a city that keeps it real. “Detroiters don't wait for a crisis to care,” he reflects, contrasting the stiff, buttoned-up culture of Minnesota with Detroit's open-armed grit. Joshua shares how his life changed forever after discovering Nandi's Knowledge Cafe. “This ain't gentrification, this is cultural resurrection,” he says, pushing a vision of Highland Park as the next Harlem. Whether it's Dutch Girl at 2 AM or lessons from Malcolm X, this conversation is Detroit culture. Send us a textEver found yourself wondering why you can't achieve perpetual happiness? You're certainly not alone. This fundamental question lies at the heart of our latest episode where we explore the transformative "50-50" concept – the liberating truth that life naturally consists of half positive emotions and half challenging ones. The idea sounds deceptively simple, yet its implications are profound. When we release the exhausting pursuit of constant happiness, something remarkable happens: we experience freedom. By acknowledging that every human being – from celebrities to CEOs to your seemingly perfect neighbor – navigates this same balance of emotions, we can finally stop believing something is fundamentally wrong when we face difficult moments. This episode arrives at a personal crossroads as I share my reflections on burnout, boundaries, and what's next for the podcast. As a high-achieving entrepreneur juggling multiple passions, I've been confronting these very questions myself – what stays on my plate, what goes, and how do I honor my energy while pursuing what lights me up? These vulnerable explorations connect directly to our 50-50 discussion, illustrating how embracing life's natural balance helps us make clearer decisions. The beautiful paradox of accepting life's 50-50 nature is that it actually enhances our capacity for joy. When we stop fighting against inevitable challenges, we create space to fully appreciate the positive aspects we might otherwise overlook. As I often say, "Where your focus goes, your energy flows" – and recognizing life's natural equilibrium allows us to direct our attention more intentionally.Ready to release the crushing pressure of trying to be happy all the time? This episode offers practical wisdom for embracing your whole human experience. Send us a textEver caught yourself thinking, "I'll be happy when..." or "I'll feel successful after..."? That mindset might be your biggest obstacle to creating the life you truly desire.High-achieving women, especially those in leadership and entrepreneurship, excel at forward momentum. We're constantly planning the next project, chasing the next milestone, or strategizing our next evolution. While this drive serves us well, it often comes with a significant cost: we postpone our happiness and sense of accomplishment until some future achievement. This episode challenges that pattern by exploring the neuroscience behind affirmations and success. When you tell yourself "I can't be successful until..." your brain dutifully gathers evidence to support that belief. But flip the script to "I am successful right now because..." and watch how your energy, motivation, and momentum transform.Through the story of a client who successfully transitioned from fourth-grade teacher to Anthropologie artist, we examine how acknowledging your current skills and celebrating present wins creates the foundation for future growth. Rather than dismissing your current phase as merely a stepping stone, what if you recognized it as an essential part of your journey worthy of celebration? The most powerful question you can ask isn't "What's next?" but rather "How am I already successful today?" and "What would my 16-year-old self be proud of?" These reflections reconnect you to your journey and remind you that you're already winning, even as you pursue bigger dreams.Remember: You have everything you need to be successful as you define success right now. Give yourself more credit, queen. You're doing a fabulous job.Ready to transform your relationship with success? Send us a textWhat happens in your brain when fear stops you from taking action toward your dreams? The mechanics are fascinating and understanding them can completely transform your approach to challenges. When you're feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or anxious about moving forward, your brain has shifted from its creative center to its survival center without you even realizing it.Your brainstem—located where your skull connects to your neck—houses your fight, flight, freeze, and fawn responses. When activated, this primitive part of your brain takes control, effectively shutting down your prefrontal cortex where creative thinking happens. This explains why overwhelm leads to decision paralysis, why anxiety blocks innovation, and why fear keeps you scrolling through how-to videos instead of actually launching your business or going for that promotion. The good news? You have the power to shift from survival mode back into creative genius mode through practical tools. Meditation, physical movement, journaling, or even something as simple as taking a short walk can help you return to your prefrontal cortex. The key isn't just knowing which tools work for you—it's consistently using them, especially when you feel stuck. By bringing awareness to your fear through the simple question "What am I afraid of right now?" you begin the process of moving from reactive to creative. As someone who coaches high-achieving women and creative entrepreneurs, I've witnessed this neurological shift transform people's capacity to take aligned action despite fear. We all have these tools available to us, but often forget to use them precisely when we need them most. Which of your tools have you been neglecting lately? Are you ready to reclaim your creative thinking and finally move forward on what matters most to you? Your brain is designed for both protection and creation—learning to consciously navigate between these modes might be the missing piece in your success journey.- - - - - - - -ENJOY THE PODCAST?Leave us a 5-star review so more people can find us!LEARN MORE ABOUT COACHINGNandiCamille.comSCHEDULE YOUR FREE DISCOVERY CALLClick HereEVENTSClick here to learn viewLISTEN TO MY CONFIDENCE SESSIONS IN THE MARIGOLD APP50% off annual membership: Use code: NANDI50---> Click below to learn morehttps://apps.apple.com/us/app/marigold-self-confidence/id1463889202LET'S BE SOCIALEmail: hello@nandicamille.comInstagram: @nandi.camilleLearn more about Nandi and Life Coaching at: NandiCamille.com
Send us a textEver feel like you're constantly working toward your goals but rarely stopping to acknowledge how far you've come? You're not alone. This episode dives deep into the often-overlooked practice of giving ourselves love and respect, particularly for high-achieving women. While we excel at identifying areas for improvement (which is likely why you're listening to self-development podcasts!), we frequently miss opportunities to celebrate our progress and acknowledge our efforts. The real magic happens when we balance our drive for growth with genuine self-appreciation. As Nandi reveals, the people operating at their highest level aren't those constantly criticizing themselves into excellence—they're those who genuinely love and respect themselves first. This love creates space for greater creativity, resilience, and authentic connection with others.Through personal stories about her 32nd birthday celebrations and thoughtful questions, Nandi invites you to reflect: Where have you been showing yourself love that you haven't acknowledged? What efforts deserve recognition, regardless of their outcomes? How might shifting from "I'm not enough yet" to "I'm doing well and getting better" transform your experience?Whether you're struggling with a setback or simply feeling like your efforts aren't yielding results fast enough, this episode offers a compassionate reminder that becoming someone you've never been before is challenging work—and you're doing that work beautifully. Send us a textHave you ever felt your chest tighten, your hands get clammy, or your thoughts race uncontrollably? These physical sensations are your body's way of signaling anxiety – an emotion that, at its core, is simply fear. But what if you could transform that fear into something more empowering? In this deeply practical episode, I share the tools my clients and I have used to navigate anxious moments successfully. We explore the fundamental understanding that there exists only fear and love, and learning to shift from one to the other can change everything. I break down how to recognize your personal anxiety cues – both physical and mental – so you can intervene before anxiety escalates into panic. The beauty of mindfulness lies in its simplicity. Sometimes, all it takes is a redirection of focus using what I call "catchphrase love" – repeating the word "love" to yourself when anxiety strikes. For those moments when you need more grounding, I walk through the powerful 5-4-3-2-1 technique that uses your five senses to anchor you in the present moment.Perhaps most transformative is the shift from focusing on what you don't want (the source of anxiety) to what you do want. This simple yet profound change in perspective can recalibrate your nervous system and open doors to possibilities you might have been too fearful to imagine.Whether you're experiencing anxiety for the first time or have struggled with it for years, these accessible tools can help you build a healthier relationship with fear. Remember – your brain is always trying to protect you, but sometimes its alarm system needs recalibration. With practice and patience, you can learn to respond to anxiety's signals with love instead of more fear.Want to continue the conversation? Send us a textLife throws challenges at all of us. Sometimes we choose them, and sometimes they choose us. Either way, understanding how to naturally activate your body's "happy hormones" can make all the difference in how you navigate difficult seasons. In this science-backed episode, I break down the four key hormones that regulate your mood and emotional wellbeing: dopamine, serotonin, oxytocin, and endorphins. For each one, I share practical, accessible strategies to boost them naturally when you're feeling low. Whether it's completing small tasks for dopamine, spending time in sunlight for serotonin, connecting meaningfully with others for oxytocin, or laughing to release endorphins—these techniques require no prescription and can be implemented immediately. What makes this episode especially valuable is how these approaches work together. Creative expression, for instance, often activates multiple happy hormones simultaneously. I explore the crucial balance between creating versus consuming and how this distinction might be at the heart of why you're feeling depleted. The strategies shared range from completely free (like deep breathing or gratitude) to simple lifestyle adjustments anyone can make.Save this episode for those inevitable moments when you're feeling off-center. It's designed to be your practical toolkit for natural mood enhancement that you can return to again and again. Whether you're navigating career transitions, relationship challenges, or simply the day-to-day stress of modern life, these evidence-based approaches will help you tap into your body's natural happiness chemistry without medication or expensive interventions.Ready to transform how you feel on a regular basis? Send us a textVisibility anxiety affects even the most talented entrepreneurs, especially when they're stepping into networking situations. In this candid, on-the-go episode recorded from my car, I break down the unnecessary drama we create around being seen in business spaces and offer practical mindset shifts to transform networking from a source of stress to an opportunity for authentic connection.Ever found yourself freezing up at a business event, worried about saying "the wrong thing"? You're not alone. When we focus on avoiding mistakes, our energy flows toward anxiety rather than opportunity. The solution isn't perfect preparation but rather deciding who you want to BE in those spaces beforehand. By practicing your introduction in the mirror and validating yourself first, you free up mental bandwidth to focus on having fun and connecting genuinely with others. Many entrepreneurs, particularly women, get stuck in rigid definitions of "networking" that don't align with their personality or values. I share how I created my own networking opportunities through a meetup group that grew to hundreds of members. Networking doesn't require stuffy events or corporate settings – it can happen in pole fitness classes, co-working spaces, or anywhere you authentically connect with like-minded individuals. The most powerful networking happens when you stop trying to fit into someone else's box and instead create visibility opportunities that feel aligned with who you are.Remember: people need what you have to offer, but they can't benefit from your gifts if they don't know about them. Your visibility isn't just about business growth – it's about connecting your valuable services with those who need them most. Send us a textWhat if the very thing holding you back from showing up in your full power is the fear of being seen? In this deeply personal exploration of vulnerability, I break down why visibility feels so uncomfortable and provide practical strategies to move past that discomfort into authentic expression. As someone who identifies as an ambivert – needing both social connection and solitary recharge time – I understand the complexity of putting yourself out there, especially as an entrepreneur or leader. What I've discovered is that everyone has their own "edge" when it comes to visibility – that point where you feel triggered, uncomfortable, and exposed. Your edge isn't a stop sign; it's an invitation to explore what's possible when you lean in rather than retreat. When fear thoughts arise – "What if I sound dumb?" "What if people think I'm full of myself?" "What if I fail publicly?" – I'll show you how to give those fears the microphone and follow them all the way through. You'll learn to shift from asking "How do I look?" to the more powerful question: "How do I serve?" This single perspective shift can transform how you approach visibility in your business, career, and life. For those carrying childhood messages like "don't be too much" or "tone it down," I share my own journey of reclaiming my right to take up space despite being told I was "doing too much" long before my adult ADHD diagnosis. The truth is, your people need exactly what you have to offer – and those who think you're too much simply aren't your people.Ready to expand your edges and step into greater visibility with confidence? Let's transform that vulnerability into your greatest strength.ENJOY THE PODCAST?Leave us a 5-star review so more people can find us!LEARN MORE ABOUT COACHINGNandiCamille.comSCHEDULE YOUR FREE DISCOVERY CALLClick HereEVENTSClick here to learn viewLISTEN TO MY CONFIDENCE SESSIONS IN THE MARIGOLD APP50% off annual membership: Use code: NANDI50---> Click below to learn morehttps://apps.apple.com/us/app/marigold-self-confidence/id1463889202LET'S BE SOCIALEmail: hello@nandicamille.comInstagram: @nandi.camilleLearn more about Nandi and Life Coaching at: NandiCamille.com
Mpho Lakaje, presenter of the BBC's Africa Daily podcast, speaks to Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, president of Namibia. The former freedom fighter is the country's first female head of state - and only the second ever directly elected female leader in Africa.Namibia is celebrating thirty five years of independence this year - yet most of the country's agricultural land remains in the hands of the white minority, and land reform is a key priority for President Nandi-Ndaitwah. Namibia's former colonial power Germany has apologised for the genocide committed under its rule at the start of the twentieth century, but it has yet to make good on the promise of reparations. Mrs Nandi-Ndaitwah remains confident the development funding will be provided - however, she is not able to give a clear time frame. Send us a textTrust forms the bedrock foundation of any successful leadership journey, yet so many aspiring and established leaders struggle with this fundamental element. Drawing from decades of leadership experience that began surprisingly early (directing traffic as a fourth-grade crossing guard!), I share the powerful connection between trusting yourself and earning your team's trust.Your energy as a leader is palpable—like body odor, it can't be hidden. When you harbor thoughts like "I don't know if I can do this" or "I'm not sure I'm qualified," that uncertainty radiates outward, attracting team members with similar doubts. By strengthening your self-trust first, you naturally draw more confident, capable individuals who resonate with your leadership presence.Curiosity might be the most undervalued leadership skill. That moment when a team member disagrees with your brilliant new strategy? Instead of defensiveness, try "Tell me more." This simple phrase opens doors to deeper understanding and demonstrates respect for your team's experience and perspective. Getting curious about both professional abilities and personal stories—like why Jamie wears that special earring every Tuesday—creates meaningful connections that build trust organically. The concept of "aces in their places" transforms team dynamics by aligning responsibilities with natural strengths. When you understand what drives each team member and position them accordingly, two magical things happen: the work improves dramatically, and your team feels truly seen and valued. This personalized approach requires knowing not just what each person does well, but why they come to work each day. Many workplace problems persist simply because people don't feel safe speaking up. Remember that punitive boss who made you feel foolish for asking questions? How many issues could have been prevented with a more approachable leadership style? By creating psychological safety, you ensure problems surface early enough to address effectively.Ready to transform your leadership approach? Book a session with me to explore what might be blocking you from becoming the leader you aspire to be—sometimes these barriers are unconscious patterns formed years ago that still influence your behavior today. Together, we'll expand that part of you that already knows how to lead with confidence and authenticity.ENJOY THE PODCAST?Leave us a 5-star review so more people can find us!LEARN MORE ABOUT COACHINGNandiCamille.comSCHEDULE YOUR FREE DISCOVERY CALLClick HereEVENTSClick here to learn viewLISTEN TO MY CONFIDENCE SESSIONS IN THE MARIGOLD APP50% off annual membership: Use code: NANDI50---> Click below to learn morehttps://apps.apple.com/us/app/marigold-self-confidence/id1463889202LET'S BE SOCIALEmail: hello@nandicamille.comInstagram: @nandi.camilleLearn more about Nandi and Life Coaching at: NandiCamille.com

Send us a textTrust is the invisible foundation upon which all effective leadership is built. In this deeply reflective episode, we explore how trust functions as a muscle in our lives—one that strengthens with consistent use and atrophies when neglected.Did you know we're actually born with innate self-trust? Watch any baby fearlessly exploring their world—touching, tasting, climbing without hesitation. This natural confidence doesn't vanish overnight but erodes through subtle messages we receive throughout our lives. When I shared my childhood dreams of becoming a choreographer or singer-songwriter, I was immediately redirected toward "practical" careers like medicine or law. The unstated message? My judgment couldn't be trusted. These accumulated experiences create a leadership challenge: when you don't fully trust yourself, others sense it. Your team picks up on subtle hesitation in your delegation. Potential clients detect uncertainty behind your sales pitch. The question becomes not just "Do you trust yourself?" but "What might be possible if you trusted yourself more deeply?"Through powerful reflective questions, we explore what messages undermined your self-trust and how to reconnect with your inner knowing. I invite you to visualize your future self who fully trusts their decisions and leadership abilities—this vision provides the roadmap for your growth work. This episode marks part one of our trust exploration in leadership. Join me next week when we'll expand our focus to building trust with your team and wider community. Send us a textLeadership doesn't always come with a title. From fourth-grade class representative to nonprofit executive director, the journey of leadership is paved with self-discovery and intention. What truly makes someone an exceptional leader? For me, it starts with profound self-awareness.The foundation of leadership excellence begins with three essential questions. First, do you genuinely like or love what you do? Leaders who authentically enjoy their work create magnetic environments where teams thrive. Think about your favorite teachers growing up—they either loved their subject or convincingly acted like they did. This enthusiasm transfers directly to those you lead, creating engagement impossible to manufacture otherwise.Next, why are you drawn to leadership positions? While the initial answer might be control or compensation, digging deeper reveals our true motivations. For Nandi, early leadership experiences satisfied a desire to make meaningful decisions that positively impacted others—a stark contrast to her childhood where choices were limited. Understanding your authentic leadership motivation creates alignment between your actions and intentions.Perhaps most revealing is examining leaders who've influenced your path. Which bosses made you think, "I never want to lead like that"? Which mentors inspired you to grow? These experiences shape our leadership DNA, often motivating us to create the positive environments we wished we'd had. My own commitment to empowering my team stems directly from working under leaders who didn't listen and misused their authority. The results speak volumes—in my role as executive director, team retention remains strong, with departures happening only for positive life transitions rather than dissatisfaction. This achievement demonstrates how self-aware leadership creates environments where people feel valued, heard, and supported in their growth.Ready to develop your leadership self-awareness?
