Devin: Peter, what is your superpower?Peter: My superpower is caring and doing humanitarian efforts most of my life.Devin: John, what's your superpower?John: I grew up in a very large family, and the concept of getting along with people comes into play because, you know, you got to love brothers and sisters. When Peter Teahen started thinking about this round-the-world trip, his wife was supportive but didn't expect him to pull it off. After a year, when he announced his plan to actually go, she insisted he find a co-pilot. Luckily, marriage had connected the pair to a cousin who was also a pilot, John Ockenfels.John, with over three decades in Rotary, was excited to make the trip and, after a few weeks of contemplation–and discussion with his wife–agreed to the journey and brought the fight to end polio to the flight. That, it turns out, was just the beginning of their challenges.“This was the trip that couldn't be done, that shouldn't be done, that nobody in their right mind was going to do. But somehow, we managed to pull that off,” John says.Planned for 2020, the pair had their trip canceled by covid. Rescheduled for 2021, covid's relentlessness canceled the second effort. A third effort, in 2022, was blocked by Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The duo had planned to take an established northern route that included stops in Russia. US-Russia tension after the attack resulted in revoked invitations. Almost anyone else would have given up at this point. The primary alternative, a southern route, would require 15 and 17-hour-long hops over the Pacific, which their plane couldn't handle.Undeterred, the pilots just bought a plane that could make the trip! They left on May 5th and returned on July 31st. Over the years of preparation and during the flight, the duo raised millions for polio, counting the $2 for $1 match provided by the Gates Foundation.“We believe we had just raised our first million dollars before our departure. Since then, we're pretty sure that we've got at least another half a million that we've raised along the route. So that's going to be a pretty good check to the Rotary Foundation,” John says.Rotary leads the global effort, now funded primarily by the Gates Foundation, in collaboration with UNICEF, the World Health Organization and the US Centers for Disease Control.John explained the history from his perspective, “I joined Rotary in 1986. They had just gotten on board with this polio elimination program. At that point, three-fourths of the world was endemic with polio. We watched these charts go from red to green as polio around the world went away.”Today, polio is endemic only in Pakistan and Afghanistan. A 2022 visitor from Pakistan was contagious, and the first case of polio in the US in decades was recorded.Peter explains the growing vulnerability around the world, including in rich countries:In today's environment, where there's a decline in people vaccinating, especially post-covid, a lot of people have just dismissed vaccinations. The vaccination rate in the world is at the lowest it's been for years. That sets up trouble for children and families whose children will be exposed to the polio virus. Studies show that if we don't eliminate polio soon, in the next ten years, we'll see 200,000 new cases of polio. It's time to stop. It's time to get across the finish line.Completing the journey and raising so much money to end polio required the pilots to use their superpowers, Peter's caring and John's getting along with people.AI Episode Summary* Peter Teahen and John Ockenfels completed a round-the-world trip in their Cessna airplane to raise money and awareness for the fight to end polio.* Peter had the dream to fly his plane around the world and started planning in 2018.* He approached John, who initially hesitated but eventually joined the trip.* Their original route was canceled three times due to Covid and Russia's invasion of Ukraine, so they had to plan a new southern route.* The route included stops in Newfoundland, Iceland, Europe, Crete, Jordan, United Arab Emirates, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Kuala Lumpur, Surabaya, Darwin, Canes, Brisbane, Pango Pango, Hawaii, Maui, and Oakland.* The trip was challenging, and they faced risks and limited communication, but they successfully completed the journey.* Their goal was to raise money for the fight against polio, as there are still cases in Afghanistan and Pakistan.* They raised over a million dollars before their departure and believe they raised another half million along the route.* They emphasized the importance of polio eradication and the need for continued vaccinations and funding.* Their trip was a spiritual journey, and they were inspired by the support and dedication they witnessed in communities affected by polio. How to Develop Caring As a SuperpowerPeter shared his feelings about the trip, which included time volunteering directly to give oral polio vaccines to children:For me, this trip around the world became a spiritual journey. It was so true, especially when we were working in the ghettos in the poorest part of Karachi in Pakistan, holding babies in our arms and giving them the vaccine, talking to the parents, talking to the caregivers who are there. It moved me to tears. In Afghanistan, a lot of the resistance came from the fathers of the children who would prohibit the vaccinations. John and I witnessed in the ghettos of Karachi, where the fathers came out of their homes with their babies in their arms, and they presented their children for the polio [vaccine] drops. That brought tears to my eyes. I'm thinking that is the power of humanity when in one country, people would be killed for giving drops to their children and through education and creating an environment where they felt safe, the men presented their children for the drops.By following his example of caring, you strengthen your ability to care, potentially helping to create a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world. How to Develop Getting Along With People As a SuperpowerJohn grew up in a large family and learned a lot of lessons there. He shared a notable insight:Being in that large family, we didn't really have a lot of money. We had to make do. But we also found out that we got a lot of help from other people.I found out that returning that help, giving that help back and working in other entities, Rotary or Jaycees or whatever the organization is–many other organizations I've been working in–I enjoy that aspect of it. Even today, now that I'm retired, my wife and I still spend many, many hours every week and every year in particular, doing things for other organizations for which we get no funding or no pay. And we're okay with that.John has worked his entire career with his four brothers in the family business. He shared the advice he often gives to help people learn to get along. “There are differences for everybody and everything. Play to those differences. Work with those differences, and you can make a difference.”By following his example and advice, you can emulate John's ability to get along with others, serve in your community and make it a strength that can enable you to do even more good in the world.Superpowers for Good is a reader-supported publication. It's Hump Day! Sam and Emma host Amy Wilentz, Professor of Literary Journalism at the University of California Irvine and contributing editor at The Nation, to discuss her recent piece in The Nation entitled "Haiti, April 2023: Soon There Will Be No One Left to Kidnap." Then, they're joined by Djene Bajalan, professor of history at Missouri State University, to discuss the upcoming Turkish elections. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Kevin McCarthy's impending austerity bill, the nomination of Julie Su, John Roberts' ethics crisis, Fox's opposition file on Tucker,  and Bernie's Biden endorsement, before diving into a former Tucker producer's testimony on what's been coming out of Fox News. Professor Amy Wilentz then steps back to walk through the impact of the 2010 Haiti Earthquake in cementing the US-backed rule of Ariel Henry over a country with devastated infrastructure that was falling more and more into the hands of capitalists and gangs, before analyzing the complete neutering of Haiti's governmental forces, be they military or police, the connections between the cops and the criminals, and how these elements bolstered the rise of gangs and human trafficking in the country, leading to its current moment of intense upheaval. Wrapping up, Amy, Sam, and Emma explore what solutions are even viable, and why an election might only serve to reinforce the current moment of chaos. Djene Bajalan then dives into the nationalist discourse ahead of Turkey's election, before walking through the role this election plays in Erdogan's path to supreme power. After tackling the impact of the Turkey-Syria earthquake earlier this year and Erdogan's fascistic response, Sam, Emma, and Djene wrap up the interview by tracing the political movements that have existed alongside Erdogan's reign, and what to expect from their post-election check-in. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma cover the attacks on Kevin McCarthy's austerity from the right, the silencing of Zooey Zephyr on the Montana house floor, Candace responding to Crowder with infinitely more grit than he provided, and the importance of building new housing.  Cade from Washington dives into the importance of engaging local politics on an individual level, and Kyle from LA starts a long conversation on Russia's invasion of Ukraine, and the predication of violence, plus, your calls and IMs! These last few years of the pandemic have been an interesting time. While I would definitely hope to not do it again any time soon, there are a few things that have come out of the pandemic that have been amazing. One of those are the various virtual photographer hangouts I have been invited to, and the amazing people I have met through them. In one of these Zoom hangouts I met William Snyder, who was on the show with his Stevie Ray Vaughn album cover image, and in the same hangout I was also introduced to legendary Reuters photographer Gary Hershorn. When talking about Gary's career as a photojournalist you can get lost in the story alone, and then once you add his images to the story you are seemingly transported to amazing historical moments in time. Gary is a Canadian photographer and picture editor based in New York City, and his 43 year career began in 1979 at United Press International, in Toronto. By 1985 he was working at Reuters, as Chief Photographer, Canada, before moving to Washington, DC. in 1990. In his time at Reuters, Gary filled the roles of Senior Photographer, Picture Editor-Americas, and Global Sports Pictures Editor. He led major event coverage of the 9/11 attacks on the WTC, Hurricane Katrina, the Haiti Earthquake, along with covering numerous news, sporting championships and entertainment events around the world. Since leaving Reuters in 2014, he has worked as a photo editor for Flipboard, was the photo editor at FOXnews.com for 3 years and presently works in news curation for Facebook. In addition he is a contributing photographer for Getty Images. For those 43 years Gary has been photographing history, he has been taking us there with him in the process. In the summer of 2011, as the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center approached, he began a photography project documenting New York City, the ever-changing skyline of the city as it entered a construction boom and began pairing the skyline of the city with various celestial events that happened in the skies over New York City. This work continues and led to the publication of the book “New York Celestial” in 2019. If you follow Gary on Instagram you will find one of the most inspirational feeds there is. I show Gary's current work to someone almost daily, and could study his photojournalistic work just as frequently. Today, I am excited to share one of his most historic images with you. Join legendary photojournalist, and all around great photographer, Gary Hershorn and me as we discuss what it was like to photograph the 2008 Obama Election Night Rally for Reuters, on this Behind the Shot. Salvation Army personnel in Haiti continue to work with community leaders in nine of the worst-hit areas to ensure that the most vulnerable people are supported in the aftermath of this traumatic earthquake. As well as addressing practical needs – such as food, clean drinking water, shelter, diapers, and bedding – trained and experienced team members offer emotional and spiritual care.   Global shipping and logistics services provider UPS has generously supported the relief efforts by freighting supplies from The Salvation Army's Emergency Disaster Services warehouse in Florida to a distribution hub in Haiti. The pallets transported by UPS included 22,000 face masks, more than 100,000 disinfectant wipes and around 7,000 heavy-duty trash bags. Every item will help vulnerable communities with the arduous task of cleaning and restoring houses and other premises hygienically and in a COVID-safe manner.

You may note that I’m posting this episode earlier than planned. The reason is simple. Earthquakes aren’t planned. Haiti experienced a bigger earthquake on August 14, 2021, than the devastating quake that hit Port-Au-Prince in 2010. The more recent event occurred in a less densely populated area in Southern Haiti. Still, more than 2,000 people were killed, many thousands more were injured, and at least 75,000 people were impacted. Over 90,000 buildings were destroyed. The recent quake is a big deal, even if its impact is smaller than the 2010 quake.Marc Alain Boucicault, founder and CEO of Banj, is leading an effort to rebuild a better Haiti. He’s raising a $1 million fund to be donated in $10,000 chunks to entrepreneurs in the region most impacted by the quake. He’s hoping for a double impact by helping them launch new efforts that will serve the recovery quickly and over the long haul. The focus areas include:Agriculture and Agro industriesChild ProtectionConstructionEducationEntrepreneurshipEnvironmentFood Security and NutritionGender EquityHealthcareTechnologyTourismMarc is joined by Morgan Wienberg (Co-Founder, Executive Director LFBS), Duquesne Fednard (Cofounder CETEMOH and CEO D&A Green Enterprises) and Jason Atkins (Founder and CEO 360insights).For Marc, this recovery effort is deeply personal. He has family in the region impacted by the quake. With the $1 million fund, he hopes to back 100 projects with $10,000 each. Donors who contribute $50,000 or more will be invited to join the organization’s board. Every penny helps with the recovery. Please consider giving what you can. Almost 1,300 people are known to have been killed in the disaster, with that number certain to rise as collapsed buildings are cleared and thousands of missing people are accounted for. A Rapid Response project has been put together at The Salvation Army's International Headquarters in London to provide initial funds for food, drinking water, hygiene items, and a relief team. Damaris Frick, International Emergency Services Director, says the situation is complicated further by COVID regulations and restrictions. ‘The Prime Minister of Haiti has said he won't be seeking international help until the first assessments have been carried out,' she explains, ‘but we are fortunate that many Salvation Army personnel in Haiti have received emergency response training.'

Today on Sojourner Truth: According to reports, Donald Trump is preparing to visit India. Trump and India's Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, are fans of each other. Both are conservatives who have attempted to put limits on the number of Muslims entering their respective countries. Today, a look at India's controversial Citizenship Amendment Act of 2019, which protesters say discriminates against Muslims. Protests have broken out across India. At least 24 have been killed and thousands arrested. Our guest is Vijay Prashad, an Indian historian, journalist and commentator. He is the Director of The Tricontinental Institute for Social Research, the Chief Editor of LeftWord Books and Chief Correspondent at Globetrotter. We also mark the tenth anniversary of the devastating earthquake in Haiti that killed close to 300,00 people, injured over 200,000, and left at least one million people displaced. What has happened to the hundreds of thousands of dollars donated to assist Haitians, via the Red Cross and other large NGOs? How has corruption by a series of U.S.-backed governments in Haiti impact earthquake recovery? What are the needs on the ground now? And why will the U.S.-backed Haitian president be able to rule by decree starting this week? We speak with human rights attorney and co-founder and chair of the Haiti Emergency Relief Fund, Walter Riley. He was on the ground in Haiti during the January 12, 2010 earthquake. And, articles of impeachment for Donald Trump are expected to be delivered to the U.S. Senate this week. A Senate trial overseen by Supreme Court Chief Justice Roberts, where senators are to be jurors, is predicted to begin next week. But there's a battle going on over the fairness of the Senate trial, including whether witnesses, as requested by Democrats, will be called. Although the Senate is expected to find Trump not guilty, Democrats hope that their focus on pushing for a fair trial amid Republican resistance will hurt vulnerable Republican senators at the polls. Meanwhile, cracks are beginning to appear in the GOP on the question of calling witnesses, including former cabinet member John Bolton. Our guest is Marjorie Cohn, professor emerita at the Thomas Jefferson School of Law, where she taught for 25 years.

HAITIAN ALL-STARZ presents "HAITI EARTHQUAKE - 10 YEARS LATER". Hosted & mixed by DJ Hard Hittin Harry Special additional segments produced by DJAYCEE & Ayinsko Thunderer. Sunday January 12, 2020 marks 10 years since the devastating earthquake and subsequent aftershocks that crippled our beautiful island of Haiti on January 12th in 2010. It is a tragic day that  no one should ever forget. The 2010 Haiti earthquake was a catastrophic magnitude 7.0 earthquake, with an epicenter near the town of Léogâne (Ouest Department), approximately 25 kilometres (16 mi) west of Port-au-Prince, Haiti's capital.  The shaking started on Tuesday, Jan. 12, at 4:53 p.m. EST (21:53 UTC)By the 24th of January, at least 52 aftershocks measuring 4.5 or greater had been recorded. An estimated three million people were affected by the quake. Death toll estimates range from 100,000 to about 160,000  (Haitian government figures ranging from 220,000 to 316,000 have been widely characterized as deliberately inflated by the Haitian government.) The government of Haiti estimated that 250,000 residences and 30,000 commercial buildings had collapsed or were severely damaged. There has been a history of national debt, prejudicial trade policies by other countries, and foreign intervention into national affairs that contributed to the pre-existing poverty and poor housing conditions that exacerbated the death toll. This show features segments courtesy of CNN's Anderson Cooper, Drum Language courtesy of Ayinsko Thunderer, and great Kompas, Zouk, and Racine celebrating the rich culture and heritage of Haiti. Invertigo Dance Theatre was recently named by Dance Spirit Magazine as one of the “top six trend-setting companies to watch in LA.” Founded by choreographer Laura Karlin, Invertigo uses dance to tell compelling stories and create deep connections with communities. One of the most fascinating aspects of Invertigo is that they perform with live musicians, and even use musicians who double as dancers in their productions. One of my goals with this show is to bridge boundaries and showcase a wide variety of musical styles and perspectives. As a musician, it's easy to overlook the symbiotic relationship between music and the movement arts. To that end, I'm delighted to present this interview with Laura Karlin and my first inside look at the inner workings of a dance company, Invertigo Dance Theatre, with their innovative use of live music and musicians as integral components of their performances. Their upcoming production of “After It Happened”, a piece inspired by the aftermath of the Haiti Earthquake, and set to premiere at the Ford Theater in Los Angeles this Friday, Sept. 30. Jonathan Katz talks more about his award-winning book, The Big Truck That Went By: How the World Came to Save Haiti and Left Behind a Disaster. Mr Katz was the only full time U.S. news reporter in Haiti when the quake struck. His on-the-ground reporting for the Associated Press helped inform the world about the scope of the disaster, and he stayed in Haiti in the months that followed to document how and why well-meaning world relief efforts fell short.

On a hot January afternoon in 2010, reporter Jonathan M. Katz heard a loud rumbling outside his home in the hills above Port-au-Prince, Haiti. At first, he thought it was a water truck. Then the bed began to vibrate, bottles shimmied on a nearby table, and the floor started to move. The roar increased as the deadliest earthquake in the history of the Western Hemisphere unleashed its full force. Mr. Katz survived. Thousands upon thousands of others were not so lucky.
