For this year's Halloween watch-along, we've found the spooookiest wrestling moment possible: a good Goldberg match! That's right; when Goldberg faced Diamond Dallas Page at Halloween Havoc 1998, people stopped and said, "Pretty good!" Were they unwell from the horrid Hogan/Warrior showdown that preceded it? Is it possible for Bill Goldberg to have an actual quality match, especially against DDP? Watch along with us and find out!
In this episode of Squared Circle Radio, Chris Belcher & Andy York discuss the events of Friday Night SmackDown that saw Cody Rhodes & Roman Reigns join forces and sign a contract for an upcoming tag match against the Bloodline. Is this duo bigger than the Mega Powers? Bigger than Hogan/Warrior? Rock/Mankind? The guys discuss that, plus what this partnership could lead to later on and the great stories that can be told. Plus, This Week in Wrestling History looks back at WCW Fall Brawl 1996 and the beginning of Sting's transformation into the crow. All of that and more, check it out! Most of this show can honestly be described as, "This is stuff we could have, and SHOULD HAVE, only had to see on Nitro or Thunder." Unfortunately, they threw it onto a show they expected people to pay for. However, those are not the big stories of this show. The two biggest stories of Halloween Havoc 1998 were the disastrous, craptastic match between Hollywood Hogan and The Warrior that was more historically bad than their WrestleMania VI match was good. Then, WCW follows that up with possibly the best match of Goldberg's career as he defends the WCW Title against Diamond Dallas Page. However, WCW forgot to let PPV providers know they were going to run very late, so viewers sat through the embarrassing Hogan/Warrior match, then as soon as Goldberg and DDP tied up, the PPV feed cut off. WCW had to show the match for free the next night on Nitro, costing them boat loads of money and angering PPV providers. In the news, Raw steamrolls Nitro in the ratings as Stone Cold abducts Mr. McMahon and makes him pee himself, the WWF works with both Mexican and Japanese promotions, Scott Hall's ex-wife speaks publicly about the wrestling industry, WCW diminishes their Mexican talent while Goldberg diminishes Chris Jericho, the ECW Tag Champions refuse to lose to the Dudley Boyz, roller derby is coming back, an historic wrestling promoter is close to death, and much more! It's a combo of movies and pro wrestling as the Turner-owned WCW (NWA?) promotes the new RoboCop movie...on pay-per-view...in the worst way possible! But besides RoboCop and his unfortunate appearance, WCW is in disarray as they're changing bookers, trying to shed the NWA name, and Sting isn't quite back in the ring from getting his knee torn up. This main event was almost ruined by an injury as well, as Lex Luger was fighting for his life in a hospital bed for 2 weeks with a staph infection before this cage match with Ric Flair for the World Heavyweight Title. In this edition of With This Ring, Cindy and Ryan look at 5 Royal Rumble matches. They talk about the beginnings of the Royal Rumble, as just another chance for WWF to screw with Jim Crockett Promotions, the rough going early on and how things really got cooking with the 1990 event and the Hulk Hogan/Ultimate Warrior showdown. They discuss how star-studded both the 1990 and 1992 Royal Rumbles are, Jack Tunney’s questionable Presidential decisions, and how Ric Flair has the best Royal Rumble performance. Cindy is shocked to hear that Shawn Michaels sings his own music! Then, they discuss an Attitude era Rumble with 2001, Kane’s possible finest hour in the WWF, a hardcore Rumble segment, and how Austin/Rock compares to Hogan/Warrior showdown. Ryan and Cindy then go to 2005 and discuss the changing of the WWE and the infamous Vince McMahon quad blow-up. They end up in 2010, looking at C.M. Punk’s sermons, DX exploding, and Edge returning. Listen to how Cindy’s final fours are not great. Sit back and with a tear in your eye, PUT THAT CIGARETTE OUT! ***SPOILER***This was recorded back in January so please excuse the talk of WrestleMania 36 at the end. I know many PTBN members are still upset about not being able to go, so you might want to end the podcast with about 3 minutes left.
