Charles and Jon talk to Professor Joel Berger from his home in Colorado. Joel has spent a lifetime studying 'extreme species in extreme places' as a senior scientist with the Wildlife Conservation Society and at Colorado State University and the University of Montana. He has worked on many mammals including Huemul in Chile, Musk Ox in Russia and Pronghorn in the USA. And he has focussed his work on some of the larger and unsung species that live in the world's deserts (of all types). In an entertaining chat, Professor Berger talks about some of the many highlights in a distinguished career that has seen him a three time finalist for the Indianapolis Prize, receive a lifetime achievement recognition from the prestigious Aldo Leopold Conservation Award and be featured in the Archie comic! Some of his adventures over the years include being mistaken for a CIA agent - and put on trial - in the Russian arctic, being charged by multiple Moose, and dressing up as a Polar Bear to try to frighten Musk Oxen. Here is the YouTube trailerFor more information visit www.mammalwatching.com/podcastNotes: Joel Berger has written several books, dozens of articles and won many awards. The North Face athlete Olivia Amber is just about to roll into her second summer of 2023. Earlier this year, she set out on a 3-month road trip through South America, running and climbing (and occasionally fly fishing) from Santiago, Chile all the way down to Tierra del Fuego, an archipelago off the southernmost tip of the continent. Now that she's been back home for a bit, we sat down to talk about her southern hemisphere summer, including the FKT she set on the 40-mile Huemul Circuit outside of El Chalten, Argentina, her overall win at the Ultra Fiord 30k, and a whole lot more. Then, we launch into a back-and-forth discussion about fastpacking best practices and gear tips just in time for summer in the States.TOPICS & TIMES:Road Tripping Through Chile (1:48)Trail Running in South America (4:50)Chilean Fjords (8:24)Olivia's Huemul Circuit FKT (12:35)Fastpacking 101 (21:24)Why & When to Use Poles (27:11)Fastpacking Pack Recommendations (32:45)Calorie Corner (37:10)Navigation Tips & Tricks (46:53)Choosing Adventure Partners (51:29)RELATED LINKS:Olivia's Huemul Circuit FKT trip reportPalanteBecome a Blister MemberBLISTER+2024 Blister Summit InfoCHECK OUT OUR OTHER PODCASTS:CRAFTEDBlister PodcastGEAR:30Bikes & Big Ideas Hosted on Acast. Dr. Joel Berger is the Barbara Cox Anthony University Chair of Wildlife Conservation at Colorado State University. He is also a longtime Senior Scientist with the Wildlife Conservation Society, and the author of multiple books, including most recently Extreme Conservation: Life at the Edges of the World. Joel is dedicated to saving animals that are off the radar of most people such as the Takin in Bhutan or the Huemul in Patagonia. These animals live in faraway places, and there are relatively few people advocating for their preservation. When he's not working, Joel enjoys hiking, watching animals, traveling to remote places, and drinking good coffee. He is also a fan of bodysurfing, but he doesn't get to do this often living in Colorado. Joel earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in biology from California State University, Northridge, and his Ph.D. in biology from the University of Colorado Boulder. He was awarded a Smithsonian Postdoctoral Fellowship to conduct research at the National Zoo's Conservation & Research Center, and he was subsequently awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship which supported his research for four years. Before joining CSU, he held the position of John J. Craighead Chair of Wildlife Conservation at the University of Montana. Joel has received numerous awards and honors over the course of his career, including the Aldo Leopold Conservation Award for Lifetime Achievement from the American Society of Mammalogists, the Life-time Achievement Award from the Institute for Parks at Clemson University, the Society of Conservation Biology's LaRue III Life-time Achievement Award, and the Conservation Biology Award from the Denver Zoological Society. He is also an elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Sciences, and he is a three-time finalist for the prestigious Indianapolis Prize in Conservation, one of the field's greatest honors. In this Interview, Joel shares more about his life and science.

Tony Povilitis is a wildlife biologist, conservation activist, and founder of Life Net Nature, a "mom and pop" nonprofit devoted to wildlife research, voluntarism, and advocacy. For more than a half century, Tony has witnessed ongoing destruction of wildlife and nature in numerous countries. His conclusion: Efforts to mitigate human impacts have fundamentally failed. The only sane way forward is to vastly scale down humanity's exploitation of nature, consumption, and population. His book "Slipping through our hands, imperiled wildlife of the Greater San Juans" appeared in 2000. Tony has spent a good part of his professional career working to study and protect the Andean Deer called the Huemul.

@biocym is an artistic project from southern Italy seeking to awaken emotions by expressing its feelings towards reality and the use of atmospheres and scenarios reflected in its sound. The main nucleus of his work reflects the attitude that man must embody in order to move in a dark and inscrutable reality that he must face when he inevitably explores it. Biocym represents the way in which the artist approaches the way of awakening in himself by contemplating the infinite variety of landscapes of reality and proposes his progressive deepening. His music is the meeting point of his two influences: natural sounds and those generated by his creativity.
Renée Hamel is a Canadian ultra running post woman. We met in a camping site in El Chaltén, Argentina and decided to do the classic Huemul Circuit together. Since we both like to run we ended up setting an official "FKT" (Fastest Known Time) on the route. The circuit is normally done in four days, starting and ending in Chaltén. It's around 70km with about 3000m elevation gain. It's an unforgiving terrain with zip lines for river crossings, glaciers, patagonian weather, beautiful mountain passes, great scrambling and some awesome single track. It's got it all! Official timeWe ended up breaking the record by no more than 10 minutes(!) with an official time of 14h 3m 11s. Hear all about it in this edition of the NEDA podcast. DocumentaryI'm currently working on a mini documentary from this expedition. It will be released on my YouTube channel. Subscribe and you'll be notified when it's released.Other links:Renée on FacebookOfficial registration of the route at fastestknowntime.comSupport the show
I'm glad that I didn't kill myself on the last day of this hike, as I literally risked my life on an aluminium carabiner. . I always claim that true backpackers are masochists because we throw ourselves so far out of our comfort zone that we don't know the difference between pain and love anymore. . Despite the pain that I endure running up mountains for 4 days, seeing icebergs the size of my house and witnessing the sheer glory of the Viedma glacier was worth every drop of sweat. . Hiking isn't just about reconnecting with nature, rediscovering your love for the sounds of birds (or in this case, insane wind) nor the camping under the stars. I believe it's a physical manifestation of what mental illnesses feel like. .
In this episode, we talk through the 65km record attempt. The triumphs, the breakdowns, and why the army got involved...

Sigue leyendo →
