Chezwick is a long distance thru hiker who just successfully completed a Fastest Known Time for hiking's Triple Crown - completing the Pacific Coast Trail, The Continental Divide and the Appalachian trail in a continuous hike. Hikers train and plan a lifetime to complete these hikes over years. Chezwick completed this 7500 mile thru hike in 231 days, 7 hours, and 33 minutes - breaking the previous record by a few days. Women in their 50s, 60s, and beyond are crushing courses around the world. At a time when we've been preconditioned to believe we'll slow down, many women are holding strong—or even improving. This week's guest Anna Troup, 56, who has clocked many of her greatest ultrarunning feats since turning 50, is a perfect example. Last year she took first overall (including the men) at the 268-mile (430K) Montane Summer Spine race—Britain's toughest ultra marathon—in 84 hours, 56 minutes, and 37 seconds. This after a 2022 injury that left doctors questioning if she'd ever run again. This week, we talk about her most recent feat: completing the Montane Winter Spine Race this past January in 106 hours, 19 minutes, and 12 seconds—through brutal conditions including gale-force winds literally blowing runners off their feet. We dig into her journey to ultras, how she trains, races, and recovers, her menopause experience, and why more midlife women should line up and give it a go.Anna Troup took up ultra running in 2013 with the sole aim of completing the UTMB, which she did for the first time in 2014. Unexpected success followed, much of it after she turned 50, and she has since won and held course records for many of the UK's toughest single stage ultras including the Arc of Attrition 100, the Lakeland 100, Exodus 100, Wendover Woods 100, the Oner and the Summer Spine and Winter Spine. She has run the women's Fastest Known Time for the Pennine Way and was the first female British finisher in UTMB in 2022. Ultra running has been a family sport since the beginning and she normally competes with Richard Staite, her partner, whilst her two children can be found either running themselves or as volunteers in aid stations. Alyssa Godesky is most well-known these days for being a professional triathlete and the co-host of the popular Ironwomen podcast.What isn't well known is that she was an ultra marathon runner and trail runner, long before she moved into the world of triathlons.In 2018, Alyssa returned to her trail running roots and set out on a mission to break the Fastest Known Time (or FKT) on the Vermont Long Trail in the United States, a 273mi / 440km trail which traverses the State of Vermont from north to south.Now if you saw the film ‘Finding Traction' on Netflix last year, you know more about the Vermont Long Trail than you might think...That film follows legendary trail runner, Nikki Kimball, on her attempt to break the (men's) record on the Vermont Long Trail.#spoileralert Nikki misses the men's record but smashes the women's record.It turns out that watching ‘Finding Traction' lit the spark in Alyssa to wonder if she could do it.Fast forward a few years and in 2018 (#spoileralert), Alyssa set a new women's record of 5 days, 2 hours & 37min, taking over 5 hours off Nikki's record!In this conversation we discuss:- the self-doubt and fear of failure that nearly stopped the project before she'd even started,- the strategies she used to avoid slipping into comparison with Nikki (who is, on paper, by far the more talented and experienced runner),- the sleep deprivation she experienced (after having only 17 hours of sleep in 5 days), and- the (surprising) impact the run (and the stress from it) had on her body, hormonally.

Today on the Bikes or Death podcast it's all about the ladies!  For the first time ever I turned the microphone, and podcast, over to the talented Kayla Hall who guest hosted today's episode!   Her guests for today's podcast are Abi Snyder, Jenny Klecak, and Leila Husain, who among other things, participated in this year's Rockstar Challenge.  A 270ish mile, singletrack focused, backcountry bikepacking race in Virginia that boasts about 40k feet of elevation.     Each of these Rockstar Women put on an impressive performance, all beating the previous Fastest Known Time.  Abi took the overall Grand Depart win and set a new FKT.  Leila was 3rd overall and 2nd place female.  And, Jenny, who had to scratch from the Grand Depart came back just 2 weeks later and set a new FKT, besting Abi's time by 2 hours.   Another story from today's episode that caught my ear was when Leila got a stick lodge into her leg on a descent.  I'll let Leila tell that story, but trust me, you're gonna wanna hear it (or maybe not

Ultra runner and long-distance fast packer Jessica Pekari on the podcast! She shares the story of her most recent fastest known time (FKT) adventure: completing the 500 mile Colorado Trail. Jessica is an Army veteran—having served as a medic in Iraq—and mother of three, with Blackfeet and Mexican heritage. She started exploring ultra running in 2015, and ran her first 100 miler the next year. Jessica then went on to win the triple crown of 200 milers in 2018, which consists of the Bigfoot 200 miler in Washington, in August; the Tahoe 200 miler in California and Nevada in September; and it finishes with the Moab 240 miler in October, which Jessica won, on her way to winning the overall title for these three events.  Jessica went on to become an accomplished backpacker. She made her first FKT attempt in 2020, going after the southbound Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) record. She was thwarted by fires that year and didn't set the FKT, but she did write a book about her experiences: Bombs to Trails: Interweaving Heritage, Life, and PTSD on the Pacific Crest Trail. Jessica returned to the PCT in 2023 and set that FKT. Katie Gunvalson had a calling: traverse the entirety of the 2,700 mile Pacific Crest Trail. This audacious goal was something Gunvalson's younger self would have never considered. But, it's exactly what she did. The PCT, true to its name, follows the crest of the mountain ranges between Canada and Mexico, going through Washington, Oregon, and California, along the Cascade Range, the Sierra Nevada, and the mountainous desert terrain to the US–Mexico border. And not only did Katie want to get from one end of the PCT to the other, she wanted to do it faster than any other woman ever had. She wanted to set a Fastest Known Time, an FKT, in the south bound direction. That record was set by Jessica Pekari: 63 days, 7 hours, 31 minutes. So that is what Gunvalson prepared to do, for years; and she was ready. But there was one challenge that ultimately presented itself that Gunvalson really hadn't anticipated, and it would cause her to very deeply consider the real purpose of this journey. Michelino Sunseri is a professional runner living in Driggs, ID. In September 2024, Michelino broke the existing FKT on the Grand Teton, held for 12 years by Andy Anderson - one of the longest standing and most iconic up/down speed records in mountain running. During the attempt, Michelino made the strategic decision to take the "Old Climber's Trail," deviating from the official route for a period during the descent.   Michelino managed to lower the existing FKT by a little over 2mins, finishing in 2:50:50. A few days after the run, controversy emerged as it related to Michelino's decision to use the Old Climber's Trail, creating a debate about FKT ethics and whether Michelino deserved to retain the record even though he used a slightly different route from the previous record holder.     A week later, on September 9th, Fastest Known Time officially rejected the record based on objections from the National Park Service based again on Michelino's decision to use the Old Climber's Trail instead of staying on the officially recognized route.    On September 25, 2024, the NPS charged Michelino under 36 CFR 2.1(b) with an initial court appearance, a statute that carries a maximum penalty of $5,000 and/or six months in jail.   In this podcast, we discuss the history of FKTs on the Grand Teton, including Michelino's personal history projecting the route. We talk through the ethics of FKTs and the grey area that exists and that this event revealed. Ian Koenig just set the new self-supported Fastest Known Time on the Buckeye Trail. So he was responsible for sourcing and carrying all of his own hydration and nutrition while he circumnavigated the state of Ohio on the 1,444 mile trail. This has been an exceptionally dry year for Ohio and it was a challenge for Ian to find water at times since many streams and creeks were dry due to the drought. Doing a special bonus episode drop with Tara Dower again. She just completed the Fastest Known Time on the Appalachian Trail(2,189 miles). This was a stout record that other elite athletes have attempted. She completed the AT in 40 hours, 18 hours, and 6 minutes, which comes out to about 54 miles each day. It required her to wake up at 3AM each day to log miles before the sun came up and keep running until after the sun went down. I helped out by providing weather forecasts for her and her team. Her new record beats all other times, male/female, northbouth/southbound, for the new overall record. She is inspiring in so many ways and she was also doing this to help raise money for Girls on The Run. I provide background information on the JMT, its significance, and the history of FKT attempts on the trail. I then share my own journey of attempting to break the JMT FKT, including the challenges I faced and the strategies I employed. I ultimately break the record by less than 13 minutes. I emphasize the importance of knowing oneself, setting micro-goals, and persevering in order to achieve FKTs. No matter how you define “hard,” heading outside offers plenty of chances to tackle it. Many people who choose to tackle hard stuff outside are pushed to do so to honor some kind of “why.” For some of us, that “why” is health or to push our own personal boundaries. For others, the “why” is on behalf of someone else. Ultrarunner Emily Halnon's “why” has everything to do with her mom, who died from an aggressive form of cancer in early 2020. To honor her she headed out to tackle a major challenge running on the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT). It's a story she's now shared in her new book “To The Gorge.” Through her journey, she learned the power of moving through hard stuff.
